city.. very shocking, very alarming" gunfire erupts, on the san e your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. going to school in this city and things like that happening? very shocking. very alarming. >> gunfire erupts on the san jose state campus. three people dead, including the suspected gunman. the chaos for students getting out of class. a fourth scare on a plane this week just after a bay area man tried to storm a cockpit. why another passenger was taken off in cuffs. good morning. it's wednesday, may 11. i'm grace lee in for sydnie. >> hi, everybody. i'm frank mallicoat. it is 4:30. lawrence is back in the big chair now. >> yeah. >> on a wednesday. you bring good weather. >> rolling in just like the fog out there right now. yeah, it is pretty gray outside around the bay area. we have some low clouds and drizzle at the coast.

going to see more of that. ma means cooler temperatures around the bay area for today. plan on about 57 degrees some partly cloudy skies into san francisco. slow clearing in san jose. in concord temperatures way down from yesterday's highs to 65 degrees by the afternoon. let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. we have a high wind advisory on the san mateo bridge on westbound 92 so take it easy this morning. bay bridge no delays heading into san francisco. more traffic coming up. in the meantime, back to you guys. >> thank you. three people dead from a shooting at san jose state university. it's still under investigation this morning. last night's gunfire was at the tenth street garage on the north side of the campus. kiet do is in san jose state now where counselors will be on campus all day. reporter: good morning. everything is back to normal here at the tenth street parking garage after a grim

scene and a highly unusual scene here at san jose state university. this all started around 8:30 last night when a call came in of multiple gunshots from the fifth floor of the parking garage. some witnesses say the barrage of gunfire sounded like someone had emptied an entire clip. details are sketchy but authorities said it did not appear to be ran do. police confirmed two people were dead at the time and that the suspected gunman was initially injured and was on his way to the hospital. but by midnight a university spokesman said that the gunman had also died. the shooting shut down the garage for several hours and stranded dozens of students. >> i guess i just heard gunshots go off. >> reporter: how many. >> more than -- i want to say more than eight. around 10 shots. >> reporter: it was from one weapon or possibly more than one? >> it sounded like one weapon. >> that could have been any of us getting our vehicles that it occurred.

trying to better ourselves, get an education here. >> reporter: and that's what happens? >> yeah. >> reporter: so definitely an unnerving scene here at san jose state university as students were getting out of class last night. the university says that the counselors will be on hand. they are offering that service to their students, as well. and that the parking garage will be open for normal operations later on this morning. back to you. >> all right, kiet do live in san jose, thank you. a strange twist in the search for a suspect in another san jose murder. police believe that the man is using his twin brother's identity. now, suspected gang member mario jesus hernandez is accused of shooting a man to death last month as a home on south capital avenue. investigators say there is evidence hernandez may be passing himself off as his brother gilbert. police say the two men look almost identical and they do have similar gang tatoos. the trial for two cal grads accused of spying in iran was postponed today just as it was scheduled to get started.

iran did not give a reason for delaying the trial. shane bauer and josh fattal were arrested hiking near the border with iraq nearly two years ago. sarah shourd was also arrested but iran let her out on bail last september and she is not going back for the trial. well, thousands of people in napa and yountville are experiencing some water problems after a major transmission line ruptured. the water main broke yesterday afternoon in an agricultural area near foster road. many customers lost water entirely. other homes and businesses have low water pressure. napa's city crews were able to improve the situation by starting up a backup treatment plant but in many cases the water is brown or muddy because the disruptions stirred up sediment in water lines. >> might have run up to about 20,000 of our customers, a significant number. this is our main water supply line. >> city experts believe the problem was caused by winter

rains that weakened the ground near the busted water main. it's not clear when the problem will be resolved but we'll have a live report coming up at 5:00. time now is 4:35. flooding in the mississippi delta is already having a devastating effect and the worst may be yet to come. over the past week or so, the floodwaters washed away crops, forced many people to flee to higher ground. it also closed some of the dockside casinos vital to the state's economy. the crest is expected over the next few days. time for a check of traffic and weather. >> kick it over to lawrence. boy, the folks in the midwest are having a heck of a time. >> record flooding there. chance of more rain in the bay area. we have fog and drizzle out there now. a lot of clouds moving in as you can see on the latest satellite image and it means we are in for a much cooler day outside as the temperatures are going to take a major hit from yesterday's highs. right now, you have 51 degrees in concord, 51 degrees in vallejo, 51 in oakland, and 48

degrees foggy with some drizzle in pacifica. looks like as we head toward the afternoon, these temperatures are going to be much cool the other side today. i think on the high-end maybe 68 degrees, sunshine into fairfield, about 66 in livermore and about 65 degrees in san jose. only 50s at the coastline. and a whole lot of fog out toward the beaches. still, as we head toward the next couple of days, i think things will warm up a bit towards thursday and friday not going to be able to get away from the fog entirely but get a load of this toward next weekend, clouds move in late in the day especially on saturday with the chance of rain late in the day on saturday, as well. rain more likely on sunday. could see some leftover showers on monday and tuesday. and elizabeth is not looking very happy now. >> i'm not? can you tell? [ laughter ] >> just a bit. >> thank you, lawrence. >> we have a closure on highway 50 right now at echo summit. caltrans crews are out there. they are replacing the old rock wall so watch out for that ongoing work that's going to be going on for the next two

people and so many wonderful friends. we both love each other very much. we are very fortunate that we have four extraordinary children. and we are take one day at a time. >> the couple announced their separation on monday night after a 25-year marriage. another unruly plane passenger is in custody this morning. >> this is happening a little too much. this time a man tried to open an emergency exit midflight. the delta flight from orlando landed safely at logan airport in boston late last night. crewmembers and another passenger subdued the man after he tried to open the door. >> we were in orlando airport. he was kind of getting angry because the flight was delayed. just tugged on it a little bit. he didn't rip it wide open. he didn't do anything crazy. he just tugged on. it made an alarm go off. >> witnesses say they heard the

passenger say he screwed up and he had too much to drink before he got on flight. the same day another unruly passenger appeared in san francisco federal court a judge denying bail for rageh al- murisi calling him a threat to the community. passengers and flight attendants wrested it al-murisi to the ground after he tried to break into the cockpit of a plane heading to sfo sunday night from chicago. he told investigators he came to visit his family in vallejo but prosecutors said yesterday he didn't have any luggage on that plane. time now 4:39. as if they don't have it rough enough, college students about to get squeezed just a little bit more now. >> it's a lot for students to handle right now. >> the latest fare hike planned for cal state schools and how it can be avoided. and a massive security glitch on facebook. the glitch giving advertisers the key to your personal information. tell you about that when we come back. ,,,, ,,,,,,,,,,

big changes in the weather. lots of fog. you will see 60s and a mix of sun and clouds inland. chance of rain in the forecast too. we'll talk about that in a minute. >> thank you. 4:42. it's not what college students and their parents want to hear. this morning there is talk of yet another tuition hike for csu students t may be an increase of 32%. that would make going to csu schools more than twice as expensive as just three years ago. what's more, they may have to turn away 20,000 qualified students. >> you know, it's bad enough that a lot of these schools are being impacted where we are having hard enough time to get into our schools that we want to go to with our majors. now they are adding barriers of paying an extra 30%. >> the tuition hike and enrollment cap could be avoided if the state extends existing taxes. but lawmakers are split along party lines and it probably won't happen. today teachers in the bay area continue the state of

emergency campaign. it's all organized by the california teachers association. this morning, teachers will hand out leaflets outside alameda schools. also teachers and parents plan to rally in san francisco. and this afternoon oakland teachers will line up and picket in lake merritt. also this morning, hundreds of bay area teachers are out of a job. the examiner reports that more than 300 teachers in the san francisco united school district will get their final notices by sunday n concord the mount diablo school district voted last night to eliminate 180 full-time jobs. many other schools will have a better picture of their fiscal outlook next week when governor brown releases the state budget. and a security flaw on facebook could have exposed millions of users. a mountain view-based security firm symantec says a security flaw with apps may have given

washington, d.c. the meeting will be broadcast tomorrow morning on "the early show." it is 4:47 now. the. the president is finally about to have a big-name republican formally in the race to challenge him in next year's elections. former house speaker newt gingrich expected to announce online today he will seek the republican nomination in 2012. he will make his first speech as a candidate friday at a gop convention in his home state of georgia. gingrich admits his past marital infidelities could hurt his chances but hopes to emphasize his history of overhauling welfare, balancing the budget and cutting taxes. all right, folks. just getting up we have a lot of gray around the bay area this morning as low clouds and fog have swept onshore and it is going to be slowly burning off. that means we are in for cooler weather, cool now. fog and drizzle at the coast, valleys and extending inland.

this afternoon sunshine and cooler. clouds moving through 60s in the valleys. 50s and 60s inside the bay cool and breezy. gray at the coast and cool all day long. so here we go. we can see it on the satellite image. you see the clouds flowing onshore. we have a weak disturbance off the coastline bringing us mid to high level clouds moving on by. altogether it's going to add up to much cooler temperatures around the bay area today. some places as much as 13 degrees cooler from yesterday and this low will start to sag to the south. this is the one that may just begin to work its way in toward the bay area. could bring us some showers as we head in toward the weekend. hard to believe we're talking about the possibility of some more rain. all right. highs today 69 degrees in morgan hill. 66 in milpitas. 64 degrees in redwood city. a cool 54 in pacifica. many of the east bay valleys you're going to see partly cloudy skies in toward the afternoon. should be comfortable in places like brentwood about 69. 50s and 60s breezy toward

berkeley and oakland this afternoon. the north bay cool out at the coastline. you will still see lots of 60s in the valleys with some partly cloudy skies and you get the idea the temperatures much cooler than yesterday. that's not going to last. looks like the sea breeze is going to slacken toward tomorrow. that means probably a little warmer thursday and friday. look at the weekend. we have a chance of showers late in the day on saturday. better chance into sunday and staying unsettled possibly wet. another storm system could move in by next tuesday. that's a look at weather. let's check traffic. >> thank you, lawrence. we are going out live towards the san mateo bridge. chp issued a high wind advisory for the deck. watch out for that. this is the commute direction westbound 92. steady about a 13-minute drive time from hayward towards foster city and the peninsula. let's check the maps for the rest of the bay area. bay bridge toll plaza is not

bad. westbound 24 looks great cruising to the caldecott tunnel no delay and no roadwork on the lower deck. yesterday we had some roadwork approaching the san francisco anchorage but all lanes are open this morning if you are heading towards oakland. dumbarton bridge there is some roadwork. looks like the eastbound lanes 84 various lanes blocked until 6 a.m. as you approach the high-rise, no delays. more roadwork in the east bay. this is an ongoing closure. eastbound lanes of highway 4 sounds like likely just one lane blocked between loveridge and somersville but no delay east- or westbound from antioch towards pittsburg. again eastbound traffic getting by okay even though one lane is blocked until 6 a.m. the nimitz 880 through oakland both directions moving fine past the coliseum. the high street on-ramp southbound 880 might still be blocked. ongoing roadwork in hayward

north- and southbound 880 until about 5 a.m. and we have been talking about this highway 50 closure at echo summit. this is going to be closed according to caltrans for the next two weeks. so you're going to have to find detours and mass transit is all running on time so far including for bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain and remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 740-am and 106.9-fm. it's a new approach to find the men who attacked giants fan bryan stow. 300 billboards will be going up in the l.a. area shows the composite sketches of the two suspects wanted for the attack six weeks ago outside dodger stadium and lists the $100,000 reward for information leading to their arrest. the owner of the billboards donated the space. as for stow's condition, he hasn't had a seizure for two weeks and now they are hope. they will be able to move him back to the bay area. they say they haven't made any

immediate plans. funeral services will be held today for san carlos mayor omar ahmad. he died of a heart attack yesterday. ahmad was elected to the san carlos city council in 2007 and was appointed mayor in january. he called 911 from his home yesterday morning but died before paramedics could get him to the hospital. he was 46 years old. the service will be this afternoon at 1:30 in belmont. an added perk to your morning coffee. new research shows it may reduce a woman's risk of breast cancer. women who drank more than 5 cups of coffee a day were 57% less likely to get a particular aggressive kind of breast cancer. researchers say more studies are needed to confirm the association. well, it's not just arnold and maria apparently. >> a lot of couples are preparing to call it quits. there is a new report out by the university of virginia's

marriage project and it says 38% of married people who consider divorcing before the recession decided to wait, often because their house was under water or they simply did not have enough money. >> i was going to have to sell the house and give half of it to him and the kids and i would have starved. >> but now that the economy is "improving," divorce attorneys and therapists in the bay area say more clients are suddenly coming through the door. contra costa county is sending a message to dog owners: keep track of your pet. >> the county introduced an ordinance that would require animal control officers to microchip any unlicensed dog they find before returning it to the owner. if there is a second offense within three years, the county would spay or neuter the dog before returning it. >> owner would have to pay for all of this now. the board of supervisors plans to enact the ordinance on may 17.
