you're watching cbs5 eyewitness news in high- definition. good evening, i'm ann notarangelo. the dooms day prediction is a dud. the end of the world predicted to happen just minutes ago but as you know life goes on. don knapp is outside the local oakland radio station that has been spreading the word about judgment day. don? >> reporter: that's right, ann. mr. harold camping may be a true believer but unfortunately he set himself up with $100 million media campaign to make himself the butt of a joke. providing everybody with views opposite to his step into the spotlight and make fun of them. >> reporter: harold camping's station was on the air today but with no mention of the story that would be the biggest of our lives. the rolling earthquake that would be the end of the world. outside the radio station

people came to spread their own messages. >> he distorted the truth of the bible. we are just here to reach out to people and make sure that we can talk about it. >> reporter: announcing may 21st at judgment day. the l.a. times says it was a $100 million campaign. bill tinker an avid believer made final arrangements for his animals so convinced the end was near. >> i plan to put my babies to sleep when the earthquake hits denver. >> why would you do that? >> because i don't want them to suffer. >> reporter: but after neighbours complained animal control and sheriff deputies took the pets to safety. a new calculation has extended the time frame for the event. >> they have adjusted the time

frame to midnight jerusalem time and that just happened about an hour ago. >> so we can still end the world today? >> he is running out of time. it hasn't happened. >> reporter: no one answered the radio station door today. harold camping shook hands yesterday with associates and said good-bye and said he would not be back. >> that's another mystery. thank you. don knapp in oakland. mill valley police say a masked man stole more than $10,000 cash from a precious metals dealer today. police say the robber went into pacific precious metal on miller avenue this morning and forced employees to open the safe. >> the business was open at the time the suspect came into the business with his shands gun and i'm assuming demanding the money. there is no audio, only video. the suspect ran off with cash.

the two-hour search was unsuccessful. some oakland police officers continue to surrender their service weapons because of a recall. about a third of the department was issued the new glock 4. the gun's problem is with the recoil spring. the it is designed to make the weapon more stable. the department says no weapons have malfunctioned while officers carry them on duty. still no explanation tonight for the families of men killed in recent months by oakland police officers. one officer-involved shooting left two men dead wednesday night. the other was back in january. at a town hall meeting today mayor jean quan had little to offer the victims' families but says there might be changes in how investigations of police shootings are conducted. >> i think that i will probably change the way the inspector general's office work and how somebody outside the police department from my side to have

additional eyes on these issues. but i think that these are always really tough situations. >> none of the three men or the officers involved in the shootings have been officially identified. the police chief is expected to release more information on this shooting next week. checking some other bay area headlines a muni rider is in critical condition tonight after being stabbed with a screwdriver on the 14 mission bus. police say a fight broke out between some teenage passengers as bus neared mission around 8 p.m. last night. the victim is in his 30s. it is not clear how he became involved. surveillance camera video for the bus is being reviewed. dog lovers are not giving up their fight against the elimination of many public off- leash recreation areas. they staged a mighty putt strut today in protest. the park service wants to ban

off-leash areas including ocean beach and a couple other areas. rangers say it is a matter of public safety. the deadline for public comment is may 31st. murmurs a makeover at apple's retail outlet. the technology store opened 10 years this week. according to a blog they will undergo a transformation overnight. a company executive says the redesign will include new personalized areas and, get this, sale prices. for years a bitter battle over a name. pitting lawmakers against an ethnic community and that issue a welcome sign. anne makovec with the story. >> reporter: it is not a very big monument but it is a big day for the vietnamese community in san jose. >> very exciting. >> reporter: this new sign now

marks the cultural enclave on this road filled with vietnamese restaurants and shops. >> it is beginning. it is really to tell the people that when they come to the town we will welcome them from the little saigon. >> we accomplished this project with a lot of challenges. >> reporter: four years worth of a fight with the city that led to protests and hunger strikes outside of city hall all over the name. in 2007 the council voted to name the area the saigon business district but the community here wouldn't have it. >> saigon is our former capitol and we want to leave that name as the formal capitol. >> it is our homeland now so we want to have in our memory it is little saigon. >> reporter: the compromise was to have the community pay for the monument with $10,000 in donations gathered from individuals and businesses.

>> any money, even 1 dollar or $1000 doesn't matter. >> reporter: and here it finally is on this city-owned trip. >> okay. >> reporter: this man lives nearby and while he is not vietnamese he is glad they got their way. >> it is nice. really friendsly. >> reporter: vietnamese council woman that many here are angry with for not supporting her view was not here. >> this is a fantastic opportunities. so i will ignore what happened in the past and i will say it is a great day. >> reporter: now they want a sign on 101 directing more business into the district. in little saigon, anne makovec, cbs5. >> mayor reed also absent from the unveiling. he said he was pleased that private funds could be raised and that they worked with the city to establish a new monument. a weekend conference aimed at keeping local workers

working locally. and just in time for the memorial day weekend the progress today to reopen a major mountain thoroughfare. a lot of sunshine in most parts of the bay area. still fog out at the coastline but the winds are kicking up. what we will see for sunday we will talk about coming up. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

n 28- thousand pound an impressive drug haul for the d.e.a. and agents didn't have to lift a finger. the agency says more than 28,000 pounds of prescription drugs were turned in during the second national prescription drug take back day in april. that's just for northern california. the campaign was launched to eliminate access and improper use and expired drugs. new signs this week that california is climbing out of the crippling recession for the first time in two years the state's unemployment rate dropped below 12%. keeping jobs closer to home is the aim of a conference in santa cruz this weekend. every weekday a full one third of the coastal communities workforce heads north on

highway 17 to jobs in silicon valley and other parts of the bay area. the organizers are brain storming ways to keep the tech exodus from draining the local economy. >> the economy is so interconnected. we need people to stay here, to work here, because then they shop here, they live here and they can come to council meetings, they can coach their kids soccer team and has a huge impact. >> the second goal of the tech conference is to get at least one business funded. traffic relief for drivers tonight in the sierra nevada. it is back open and earlier than scheduled. construction crews closed the highway for more than a week to replace a roadside barrier that did not meet safety standards. the transportation department planned to close 50 for two weeks but the road work went faster than expected reopening the highway this afternoon. >> it is nice to see that this is done actually in advance of the schedule and it is a

today would have been the day to fly a kite. >> i thought you were going to say this was going to be the end of the world today. >> what a day to be down here. we had the wind blowing around the bay area. a lot of sunshine in most spots. still a couple of patches of fog out toward the coastline. let's head out. looking pretty good over the bay. although the winds are whipping up out there inside the bay. still seeing gusts. 20 to 30 plus miles per hour around the bay area. probably will see more of that in the next couple days. nice clear skies in the valleys. not a bad evening on tap for the bay area except those winds are blowing and still got patchy fog. san mateo county coastline you can see it right here just hanging along here better part of the day keeping temperatures pretty cool. likely to see some of that fill in overnight tonight and more patchy fog is on the way. but it looks like we are in for some pretty decent weather the next couple days as high pressure is going to hold on and, well, it should mean we are going to see some unsettled

conditions at least inland but otherwise we are looking pretty good as we were expecting for the most part. some pretty decent winds. mostly clear skies overnight at least inland on the coastline. looks like tomorrow the winds will be picking up in the bay area. partly cloudy skies around the bay area as well. temperatures looking like this right now. 61 degrees in livermore. still holding onto 70 in santa rosa today. 56 blowing pretty good in san francisco and 63 in san jose. more clouds in the state tomorrow. but looks like more spots straying dry. maybe a few showers up in the sierra nevada but if we are going to see more clouds move into our skies looks like for tomorrow as the system begins to slide in and it will keep things a bit on the brisk side. winds whipping up.

plan on that. going to see winds, 20, 30 miles per hour around the bay area especially along the coastline and inside the bay. temperatures not all that bad though. 69 degrees morgan hill. 67 degrees in redwood city. as we head toward the east bay you'll see lots of 60s and 70s in toward the afternoon hours. warm temperatures inland but little cooler out to the coastline winds whipping up there. 50s in the beach area. temperatures down probably through monday. by tuesdaypartly cloudy skies wednesday. thursday not bad. partly cloudy. maybe next week we might just start talking about a few more showers, ann, right here in the bay area. that's the latest. back to you. we were just getting word of a state wide amber alert out of stockton. a 3-year-old and 6-year-old.

exciting race. i know my dad is watching me. >> game 2 of the bay bridge series giants pitching staff getting to kickback and watch tim lincecum. the franchise bounced back from his worst start of the year in colorado with its best. a single in the 1st then went on to retire 21 straight. the giants were clinging to a 1-0 lead when cody ross singles off brad ziegler. buster posey scores. they tack on two insurance runs in the 8th and then tim lincecum came back out for the ninth and pitched number 133 with a 95-mile-an-hour fastball to end the game. he tosses a three-hit shutout as the giants beat the as 3-0. they have now won eight straight at at&t park. the sharks jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first period last night and then held on late when the canucks answered with three goals in the 3rd to win game 3. the sharks racked up 53 minutes in penalties in game 2. last night it was the

canucks losing their compose you're giving the sharks 10 power play opportunities. patrick marleau had two more goals and now has scored in four straight games. and most importantly the sharks are back in the series. >> i mean, it is huge. would you rather be down 3-0 or would you rather be 2-1? it was a big game for us. >> individuals within our group spoke to you today about approaching it like game 7. they obviously did that in the first period. >> breakaway opportunity for patrick marleau. he scores. patrick marleau makes it 3-0. >> got through the low part and now he is back to playing the way he is capable of and used to. he is a hot player. a streaky player. >> going again tonight. they are our leaders and we followed along and jumped on board. like i said when your best players are playing on the top of their game you've got a

bigger chance to win. >> we lost our composure in game 2. we admitted it. i think that's the first thing we needed to do and it is so intense out there right now. the game is to -- there is so much passion in the game when you're playing ahead and not chasing the game the other team has a tendency to get frustrated. they were probably the exact opposite of what we were in vancouver. >> these two teams haven't been happy with each other in the beginning. there is a hit. white was standing still. >> i'm sure they look at our power play. you will see the penalties go on as the games go on here. >> we gave i think 10 power plays. and i thought we were pretty disciplined. so if i were to comment on what i think of the penalties i'd get a pretty big fine. so i'm going to save my money.
