weather pattern will continue through the weekend. maybe even showers out there. more clouds than rain for us, as we've got light rain shower outside the golden gates, this cool pattern will be with us through the weekend here. plan accordingly. right now, partly cloudy skies. most of the moisture in the offshore waters and likely dissipate before it gets here, but a slight chance of a sprinkle through your holiday weekend. mainly through today. i think it will be gone by tomorrow. we'll take a look at the rest of the forecast details in just a few minutes. thanks, jim. topping news this morning, oakland police trying to see whether an armed robbery suspect is also responsible for a home invasion and sexual assault. police say he led officers on a high speed chase after armed robberies in the mont claire area, seizing evidence from the suspect's back seat, including bottles of codeine cough syrup to make purple drank.

they may also be looking for more evidence. >> we talked about it earlier in lineup. there was a mention of sexual assault and robbery. didn't necessarily link them together. >> before the robbery at the first pharmacy, police say there was a violent home invasion and sexual assault 2 miles away in the oakland hills. police sources say the suspect has been photographed, so a photo lineup will be generated to show the victim. oakland ranks high on the fbi's list of cities with the highest crime rates. in the latest report, oakland is number 5 and neighboring richmond is number 6. san francisco is 130. san jose is 237. these stats are for last year and oakland's crime rate actually dropped more than 5% between '09 and 2010. more than two dozen felony drug cases dropped. plus, san francisco police chief says disciplinary actions will be taken, after another video surfaced appearing to

undermine credibility of undercover police officers. check out the video showing an officer approaching a suspected drug dealer on a tenderloin district street. the public defender, who released the video, says the video disputes what the undercover officer then wrote in his report. >> he raised his right hand to his mouth and spit the white rock into his hand. that never happened. and the video clearly contradicts the officer's sworn testimony. >> the officers accused in this case are the same ones already under investigation. they are accused of illegal searches, excessive force, theft, and perjury. 119 cases, drug cases, have been dropped because of this alleged police misconduct. we can expect more cases to be dropped in the future. well, most people won't be having barbecues or heading out of town on this three-day weekend. law enforcement will be cracking down on drunk drivers. this was a dui check point in

nevada last night. police say that dui arrests in that city are up 16% from just one year ago. the presence in the county was practical, and symbolic. the dui check point was dedicated to the memory of 9- year-old melody. the little girl and her father aaron were hit by a drunk driver while crossing san mirren drive exactly two years ago yesterday. aaron lost a leg in the accident and melody died shortly after. the father hopes putting his daughter's face at the check point will send a clear message to drunk drivers. >> if you get drunk and you get behind the wheel and you kill somebody, you're a murderer. if you don't care about yourself or what happens to you, you know, could you please care about other innocent people that you might hurt or kill? >> while dui check points do not typically lead to a lot of arrests, the increased police presence can deter drunk drivers from getting the behind the wheel in the first place. free concert tickets,

admission to disneyland, just some of the perks of being a politician. mark sayre on how state lawmakers made sure that the freebies will keep oncoming. >> reporter: take me out to the ball game! or perhaps to the symphony. if you're a member of the california legislature, you are currently legally able to take gifts of up to $420 per year from each individual lobbyist, and there are a lot of lobbyists. we asked gary a dino about the perks. >> should your elected lawmakers in sacramento be able to receive tickets to sporting events? >> no. >> rounds of golf? >> no. >> spa treatments? >> of course not. >> reporter: so republican senator sam blakesly introduced a bill to stop the practice of giving specific gifts with no apparent connection to public policy. >> we know it's corrupt. >> reporter: but the bill was quietly killed in committee this week, without so much as an up or down vote. democrats say the bill would

have cost about $200,000 to enforce and it was put in what's called a suspense file. the fair political practices commission is currently taking a comprehensive look at gift limits and if changes should be made, their actions ought to take place before moving a bill, which is oddly narrow, prohibiting certain gifts, but not others. >> what kind of spa treatment would you get? by a wind-fueled wildfire. it's called the cove fire. it broke out yesterday afternoon in the southern part of the sequoia national forest. it's already torched over 1300- acres. at last check, it was about 25% contained. now, at one point, 100 homes were threatened, but yesterday's evacuation orders have now been lifted. 139 people. that is the latest total of the dead from last week's tornado in missouri. police in joplin say they are seeing now an increase in looting and theft in the areas hardest hit by that tornado. authorities have arrested 16 people for looting and burglary. suspects allegedly have been picking through the rubble of homes. damaged vehicles are also being made targets. some companies have been towing cars without the permission of owners, then charging high fees if people want their cars back. n]♪ president obama in poland

today, on the final leg of his european trip. poland's president welcomed obama in a ceremony. obama has also been meeting with leaders from the solidarity movement. he is asking them to use lessons they learned after the fall of communism to help new democracies in the arab world. arizona officials challenging state and federal -- the state wants a federal judge to rule whether the new state law is in compliance with federal law. arizona voters passed the proposal decriminalizing marijuana this past november. >> not be televised! the revolution will not be televised! the revolution will not be brought to you by xerox without commercial interruptions -- that is gil scott-heron, who passed away at the age of 62. close friends said he died unexpectedly friday after becoming sick on his way back from a european trip.

scott-heron was known for blending musical elements and political scenes into his spoken word poetry. if you plan to cross the bay bridge this memorial day weekend, be prepared for delays. cal trans plans to reconfigure the eastbound lanes. some lanes will be closed overnight saturday and sunday. the work is part of the effort to speed up completion of that new span. you can also expect delays on bart this weekend. elizabeth wenger explains how maintenance work on the transbay tube may slow down bart travelers. >> reporter: good morning, if you're planning on riding bart this weekend, expect major delays for trains heading through the transbay tube between oakland and san francisco. bart has to do maintenance and repair work to the tunnel this weekend, specifically the cables that provide power to the track. so for you, what does this mean? bart officials best estimate is approximately 20 to even 40 minutes delays on those lines

waters through the day, gradually dissipating this afternoon, and that means your forecast will look like this, as we take a look at the computer here. we see the partly cloudy and cooler conditions prevail, a slight chance of a sprinkle or two across the region. shouldn't amount to much, as temperatures remain well below normal for this time of year. anywhere from 5 to 10 degrees cooler than what you would expect for your holiday weekend here. so you may it wouldn't plan accordingly. as always, check it close at hand. it will be a good weekend for the sweatshirt sales down on piers 39. we'll see this cooler air mass consistently hang in through the weekend. weak disturbance crossing the california coast, centered up just to our north. it will be moving through the area slowly through the day, maintaining the cool and windy conditions with that slight chance of showers in the picture for today. gone by tomorrow. we'll look for temperatures to begin to warm, but not anything dramatic. it will be a slight warmup

tomorrow of a couple degrees. meantime, we'll stay on the cool side here. a few showers across the northern part of the state. 2 to 6 inches of fresh snow in the tahoe expected this morning, above about 6500 feet. snow showers likely into tomorrow, so looks like the ski season never ends. they will look for warmer conditions come the beginning of the week, as we, too, will look for a warmup through next week. today, upper 50s at the coast and low 60s on the peninsula, with mid to upper 60s for the warmer locations out across the fringe areas here. tomorrow, slightly warmer. small craft advisory up on the bay. winds out of the west 10 to 20 knots, keeping a chill in the air. slight chance of showers will be diminishing through the day, as we take a look at our five- day forecast, seeing cloudy today, with a little more sunshine tomorrow. then another chance of showers develops by midweek to keep this cool pattern going right

on through the week, with temperatures well below normal for this time of year. so a chilly holiday, but mostly dry, nonetheless. >> fair enough. thanks, jim bernard. next week, state senators will revisit a bill designed to protect user identities on social networking sites. senate bill 242 did not earn enough votes to advance out of the chambers. san leandro democrat alan corbett says the bill would stop websites from automatically revealing a user's address, phone number and similar information, unless there is a clear warning they will do so. facebook, yahoo!, google, and online match making sites as well are affected. a new site allows people to hide their identities when they leave behind comments and questions. jim steyer is here to explain how that could lead to hurting kids' self esteem. we're also talking about the bill we just mentioned. i know you were a big fan of

that bill and were very disappointed when it went down. >> in principle, yes. we're talking two related phenomenon. one is cyber bullying, which this website encourages in an anonymous fashion. it's really, really scary. should be scary to every parent of anybody under the age of 18 out there. and the second is the privacy issue. cyber bullying and privacy are related. >> yes, because anybody can say anything if your name's not attached to it. >> right now, let's be honest about it. the internet is a wild, wild west. and there are -- even cell phones. so there are no real rules out there right now. what consumer advocates are trying to do is put some degree of rules out there. in the case of common sense, rules that protect kids under the age of 18. that's really what's going on here. now, you're seeing form spring, which site that allows you to basically say anything anonymously. it's a social networking site. >> does somebody first have to post something to be responded to, so you have to kind of put yourself out there initially.

>> but people do. kids do that, starting at age 8 and 9. this is a quote, unquote, only for teens, but we see a blogger write about her child's experience at common sense media this week. there are basically no language filters. terms of use of the site say you may encounter content that may be deemed objectionable, obscene, or whatever. the point is, this is not a site for kids. if you want to go in, if you want to go in, you can do that. >> i don't even want to! >> i know that. but no kid should be on there, no teenager should be on there. the cyber bullying issue is very real. we've seen deaths. millions of kids are suffering emotional issues. that is an issue, and you need to know about sites like form spring right now. if you're a parent, talk to your kids about them and teens about them and keep them off it. the other issue is the broader

issue of privacy. >> right, which is what this relates to. >> the bottom line, the industry right now doesn't want any regulations because they are making trillions of dollars. >> right. >> all the companies-- >> do not kid yourself, please. everyone should understand that. they make yahoo! or facebook's going to move to nevada? i urge them to move to nevada if they have so concerned about privacy laws in california. this is about money and that's it. privacy laws are important. they need to be carefully crafted. you need to balance them in a thoughtful way. but right now, there are no privacy laws, in case people haven't noticed. right now, everything from personal identifiable information, much more important privacy stuff is out there, and then we also talked before about tracking kids, kids information, the fact you do something stupid, teens and kids often want to do, and you post it and you can't erase it.

there are enormous privacy concerns out there. let's have some tips. >> tips are very simple. as a parent, you need to get involved in this issue. this is the reality. keep checking on what your kids are doing. and you can't, with sites like form spring, just disable them, so you need be talking with your kids and talking to other parents. the other thing i think you really need to talk about, anonymous behavior is the most cruel form of interaction, because you don't, you don't have any real rules when you can hide behind an anonymous identity. and remember, kids and adults need to know that you leave a footprint out there. a digital footprint. think of your fingerprint. that's how you're identified. well, today, you have a digital -- you do, ann. >> sure. >> i do, we all do, but most people aren't aware of that, which is exactly why as parents, we need to talk with our kids about it, schools need to educate all of our children about it, and also, we need

operation that contradicts what was in the report. a total of 119 cases have now been dismissed, all tied to illegal searches by a group of undercover officers. that video provided by the defense attorney of the city of san francisco. five students at so cal high school have been suspended for wearing what administrators say was white supremicist clothing for their senior class photo. students say swastikas and white power graffiti began showing up months ago, but when a handful of students showed up wearing white t-shirts and bandanas, considered white pride gang attire, administrators say they had had enough. police say a white supremicist gang in the area may be recruiting those students. law enforcement officials are out on this holiday weekend, cracking down on drunk drivers. this dui check point in nevada was set up with an added purpose, dedicated to the memory of 9-year-old melody, hit and killed by a drunk

driver two years ago. her father is hoping that making things personal will deter people from getting behind the wheel after drinking. if you are passionate about protecting animals and don't mind working for free, then the california fish and game department wants you. with the state's severe budget problems over the past few years, fish and game has seen their budget cut and their staff numbers decrease dramatically. to fill the void, they are looking for volunteers to work alongside their biologists and wardens. the full-time staff says they are happy to have their volunteer counterparts on board. >> it's a win-win situation for everyone. and from a management standpoint, it's just great. i love to have these folks here. >> the only prerequisite to volunteer, you're at least 18 years old, also that you attend an 80-hour training class. if you would like to volunteer, go to cbssf.com and click on links and numbers. from unemployment numbers to housing prices, new business reports will offer another look

at the nation's economic health. also, local economies feeling the pinch following the latest round of severe weather. alexis cristoferus has more from new york. >> reporter: it's a holiday- shortened week on wall street, but traders will have plenty of new data to sift through. expect new figure this is week on home prices, consumer confidence, auto sales, construction spending, and unemployment. analysts expect this friday's report from the labor department will show the economy added 244,000 jobs last month. they also believe that more people are actively looking for work, as the job markets slowly recovers. that may push unemployment rate up slightly to 9%. on wall street, stocks headed into the long holiday weekend, rising up 38 points, nasdaq up nearly 14. tornadoes and floods that have devastated parts of the southwest and midwest have hammered local economies, flooding farm lands, shutting down factories and disrupting oil production. economists believe the damage

our producer noticed the shot, rain on the camera lens! it's raining in the area. well, a little bit of rain out there, could be enough to ruin a picnic or at least ruin a hairdo. >> nah. >> well, you don't know about that. >> well, that's true! >> i'll weigh in on that. >> not concerned about the hair at this point. we'll see a few drops out there on and off through the day. it may ruin your hairdo, but i don't think it will ruin your parade, barbecue or other plans t will remain cool through the weekend. that may affect what you're planning to do. again, as we mentioned earlier, the lakes, creeks and reservoirs throughout the state will be running high, fast and cold here for the next few months. heads-up if you're headed out to participate in some water

sports. we could have an influx of some rain shower activity today, but should remain, if any, just a few drops. frontal boundary moving towards the mendocino coastline right now, up around fort bragg. there's moderate returns showing up in the offshore waters. could be a thunderstorm or two in that cold, unsettled air. as we take a look a little closer to home at our live high- definition doppler, you'll see how that winds down rapidly approaching the bay area. still moderate returns showing up just off the coast. most of this will stay in the offshore waters. could bring a few drops to the bay area, as you see moisture moving ashore at this hour. generally speaking, it will be winding down as we cross through the region here. so we'll look for that activity to remain in the forecast, but diminishing by this afternoon, as we head on to partly cloudy and cool conditions, the interior, into the mid to upper 60s. a good 10 degrees below where they ought to be this time of year. that may affect how long you

stay outside. plan accordingly. it will be on the cool side with upper 50s to low 60s expected right at the coast, as this weak weather maker crosses the region here, again, dissipating as it moves into the area. we saw the returns to our north, which will continue to weaken as they approach the bay area. and we'll be left with more clouds than rain today, with the cool and windy conditions leaving us with a slight chance of showers on and off through this afternoon. gone by tomorrow. expect a slight warmup and nothing dramatic, just a couple of degrees back into the maybe low 70s for the warmer locations. as we take a look across the rest of the northern state here, we see showers across the far reaches of the region here. eureka, redding, fort bragg, a few showers up there. tahoe will be looking at a mix of rain and snow, with the snow level at 6500 feet, expecting 2 to 6 inches of fresh snow in the mountains for the ski season. seems like it will never end

here. showers will wind down through the day tomorrow, a little more sunshine come the beginning of the week. like always for us, we'll start out with a cool day today. mid to upper 60s for the warmer locations. upper 50s to low 60s back to the water. and we'll be warming gradually here into and through the rest of the week, as we'll see low 70s for tomorrow and then slight cooldown hits us again come midweek with a chance of light showers, as this unsettled spring pattern continues. none of this is very impressive at this point, nor would you expect it to be this time of year. but it is persistent, as we will hang on to the cool and showery weather pattern. looks like on and off through next week, probably next weekend before we see another shot of some light shower activity to ruin your hairdo once again. >> okay. sunday and monday should be okay? >> sunday and monday, looking good. >> okay, good news. thanks for that. a san francisco man who learned lessons the hard way is now working full-time to help others beat alcohol and drug

addiction. kate kelly introduces us to this week's jefferson award winner. >> reporter: they call him big craig. and in the bayview, where calvin johnson has made helping others his life, he has a big presence. >> all the things going on here, if you're going to be really effective, you need to be right where they are at. >> reporter: for the last 10 years, he's been in the center of it. he helped start a nonprofit, positive directions equals change. a safe place for people in the neighborhood looking for support in drug and alcohol recovery. >> we talk to everybody. if they are using, if they are not using, doesn't matter. because a lot of times clients will come to us and they will come to us about other problems. drugs won't be the issue. >> reporter: johnson has unique perspective on the issues, because he's been there. fought addiction, served time, but changed his life. positive directions started out as a support group of mostly men working through life issues and staying clean.

but word spread and so did the types of services. there are classes now on anger management, parenting, and job skills. >> somebody who is experienced to walk the walk with them, and i think that craig is like an angel dressed up as a man down here, you know, because he understands stuff that i thought nobody would understand. >> reporter: during the weekdays, johnson is a health worker and methadone counselor and was instrumental in bringing the first mobile methadone center to the bayview, thanks to a partnership with sf general and the department of public health. the program served 140 neighborhood clients. >> people trust him, so they will come here, because they know craig's here. and they will come here and they will get their treatment. >> reporter: in the evenings, johnson and his wife of 20 years have helped as a positive direction headquarters. but the space will close this month from budget cuts. surrounded with packed boxes, johnson remains optimistic and says the weekly meetings will continue, and so will his

women coming back from serving in the military who have gotten injured and the families of those that have died as a result of serving, but those that have gotten injured and have needs that aren't met another way in trying to recover and move forward with their life. it's a way to support the public that wants to support the troops in a concrete way. similar to craigslist, in that you can post a need and then if somebody is willing to help out, they contact the person. >> correct the public can go and register e-mail address and say they want to get notified as new requests go up, so they don't have to keep checking on the site. they can say they want to know about needs in california, in the bay area. they can even say there are contractor and they want to know about needs for home renovation or they are a lawyer and want to know about legal needs. then they would get an e-mail when requests like that are posted to the site. it's wonderful, because a lot of people can donate money to a general organization, but you don't know exactly where it's going and you don't have that personal contact. your website really seems to offer the personal contact. >> exactly. we wanted to keep this population from being a faceless population and to tell the stories of what happened to

these amazing folks, like john, that have served our country, stood up to serve -- 1% of the country is served in these conflicts in iraq and afghanistan. i believe the other 99% of us should make sure they are taken care of when they have been injured or immediate families of those who have died serving. john, you're a veteran. you have spent a lot of time in the military. >> yes. >> how has this website helped you? >> actually, first time was in 2009 and i had an urgency. my car, i got in an accident and i needed to get the money to pay the shop. i was doubtful i would get help that fast, buttivity pleasantly surprised. the process and application was very easy. i submitted my request online, usa together, submitted my proof of disability and within a couple of days, four separate donors made donations and i got

my car back. >> wonderful! we all know how important that is. did you hear from these people specifically? did you have any contact with the people who helped you out? >> i did. i e-mailed them through usa together, too, and they e mailed me back and i thanked them. and it was much better than just, you know, getting handed some help, from you know, somebody you don't know. it was more personal. >> certainly, and you mentioned you have to have proof of your disability. there are protections against scams here? >> absolutely. for the service men and women, we don't post any last names or contact information. we are very concerned about their security and privacy. likewise for donors, who can either send messages or donate anonymously. they can send messages through a private service. any donations, if it is a financial donation, 100% of whatever people donate goes to that particular service, in a man or woman's case. people can also request things like tires for a vehicle or legal assistance or a laptop to go to community college or a

an investigation into police misconduct. how that new evidence undermines the credibility of some san fran new video shedding light into an investigation into police misconduct. plus, a new trend in law enforcement, arming cops with

cameras. while most people will be having barbecues or heading out of town on this 3-day holiday weekend... law enforcement will be cracking down on drunk drivers. this was a d-u-i checkpoint in novato last night. police there say d-u-i arrests in that city are up 16 percent from just a year ago. their presence in the marin county town was not only practical...but also had a symbolic purpose. that d-u-i checkpoint was dedicated to the memory of nine year old melody osheroff. the

little girl and her father, aaron, were struck by driver while crossing san marin drive exactly two years ago yesterday. while aaron lost a leg in the accident...melody died shortly after. osheroff hopes putting his daughetr's face at this checkpoint will send a clear message to drunk drivers. "if you get drunk and you get behind the wheel and you kill somebody, you're a murderer." butt to "if you don't care about yourself and what happens to you, could you please think about other innocent people you could hurt or kill?" while d-u-i checkpoints do not typically lead to a lot of arrests...the increased police presence can deter drunk drivers from getting behind the wheel. more than two dozen felony drug cases dropped in san francisco. all because another video surfaced -- that appears to undermine the credibility of some undercover police officers. the video shows an officer approaching a suspected drug dealer on a tenderloin district

street. the public defender says the video disputes what the undercover officer wrote in his report. "(the suspect) raised his right hand and spit a white rock into his hand. that never happened. in the video clearly contradicts the officers sworn testimony. " the officers accused in this case are the same ones already under investiagation. they are accused of illegal searches, excessive force, theft and perjury. 119 drug cases have been dropped because of alleged police misconduct. police chief greg suhr says police chief greg suhr says there will be discipline in this case. if you plan to cross the bay bridge this weekend, be prepared for delays. caltrans plans to reconfigure the eastbound lanes. some of those lanes will be closed overnight saturday and sunday. the work is part of the effort to speed up completion of the new span.

you can expect delays on bart this weekend as well. elizabeth wenger explains how maintenance work on the transbay tube may slow down bart travelers. good morning! pack your patience if you're riding bart this weekend.. there will likely be major delays for those folks heading through the transbay tube between oakland and san francisco. bart has to do maintence and repair work to the tunnel this weekend.. specifically the cables that provide power to track. so.. for you.. what does this mean? bart officials best estimate.. is approximately 20 to even 40 minute delays on the lines requiring transfers.. expect delays saturday morning.. until 7-30.. and sunday and monday afternoon.. until 2-30 p.m. dont forget bart is running a sunday schedule on monday for the holiday. have a great long weekend. the death toll from the monster tornado last week in missouri has risen by seven to at least 139. now - police in joplin, missouri

say they are seeing an increase in looting and theft in the areas hardest hit by the twister.. authorities have arrested 16 police in missouri are seeing a lot of looting. authorities have arrested 16 people so far for looting and burglary. suspects have been picking through the rubble of houses according to police and damaged vehicles have also been targeted. some companies have been towing cars and then charging high fees if people want their vehicles back. officials in arizona challenging that state's medical marijuana law in federal court. the state wants the federal judge to rule whether or not the new state law is in compliance with state law. it's been sitting just a mile offshore for nearly 300 years. today archaeologist recovered what they believe is the anchor from the pirates black beard

ship. the queen ann's revenge sank. black beard and the queen anns are featured in the new pirates of the caribbean. how is that for free publicity? >> could disney arrange that? it might surprise you to know who is drinking more wine these days. wine comsumption over latinos jumped three times over the last three years. how the wine industry is trying to tap into the fast growing market. >> reporter: she enjoys wine, but says it's been a challenge trying to get her family to enjoy it with her. >> my father is really into tequila, but i introduced them to wine. >> reporter: it's the same challenge for california's wine industry as it tries to tap into the fast growing market of latino wine drinkers. year when a lot of us are beginning summer vacation planning. ways to save cash, 5% of americans say they're planning to travel this summer, up from 8% last year. that's up 8% from last year. in the search for bargain airfares, there is a way to find out what is on sale without constantly searching the internet. >> too many people sign up for fare alerts based on the city that they want to go to. don't do that. base the alerts on the city you happen to live in. and you will find out great fare deals for places you hadn't thought about going, but think, wow, that's a great fare, i will go. >> and rather than getting a hotel room, rent somebody's apartment. websites help you live like a local. a way to blend into a neighborhood and avoid eating out all of the time. i am in the middle of vacation planning right now to hawaii. super excited about it. >> there you go. >> and it's two months away and my mind is there already.

some developing news this morning, san jose police investigating the city's 21st murder after a young man was stabbed to death within the past few hours. police officers were dispatched around this morning.

they found an 18-year-old man suffering from multiple stab wounds. he was take on the the hospital where he died a few hours later. the suspects fled the scene before police had the chance to get there. the circumstances surrounding this still being investigated this morning. three duis, three days in a row, a man faces two years in jail after his third arrest. bail was raised to $50,000 to prevent him from getting out again. his criminal history includes another dui conviction in 2009. convictions for petty theft and drug possession and arrests for, shocker, public drunkenness. a single day crack down on illegal usage of disabled parking placards netted more than 200 people. investigators spanned out across the state yesterday, targeting violaters including some here in the bay area. they handed out 207 tickets.

they are misdemeanors, but multiple offenses can require posting a $3,500 bail. video of police have been used to make or break investigations and careers. now taking a closer look at bay area cops who want to turn the video camera on themselves. >> reporter: custom made for cop tv shows, dash board cameras, surveillance cameras and cellphone cameras have caught criminals and police in situations that run from dangerous to embarrassing to deadly. >> so i can record myself when i stop people. >> reporter: but more and more, police agencies are turning to body cameras. two months ago, oakland police began issuing lapel cameras and san jose police tested an over the ear recording device. and while some video was successfully used in court, they discontinued the program because of cost. and now, san francisco's police chief wants his police officers equipped with a wearable video

camera. >> we have nothing to fear. >> reporter: not something the police officers association has a problem with. >> my wish would be that if it was a volunteer program that the cops that wanted to do it film what had they were going to do and then i think the other police officers would see that it was a good thing and it actually benefited us and it would catch on. >> reporter: but a handful of cops have become the target of internal investigations after the release of what the public defender says is video showing cops breaking the law. >> i think it's fine. the chief wants to arm every police officer with a camera. i don't think it's the answer. i think, we got to make sure that police officer aren't breaking the law, that there's a code of ethics that's enforced and when these kinds of things happen, there are consequences. >> one of the questions i have to ask, how much is really self- protection, to cover their own butts? >> i think it's almost all about that. and especially in light of

recent events with the public defender making allegations against my cops that we believe are totally untrue. if we had cameras and we go into a situation where we're searching the room or taking things, i think it makes sense to film that so we can take any doubt and document everything. >> and that's often the case. >> reporter: and the aclu says while it presents the potential to invade a person's privacy, there's just as a big an issue regarding evidence. >> there needs to be strict rules on what can be done with the recording, compliance with state laws on how long it must be kept as a general matter and if it turns out that it's useful because either the person the police officers interacting is being prosecuted for example or if there's a question of whether the police officer's actions were appropriate. >> reporter: generally, california law requires that video and audio taken for public safety purposes be kept

for one year. ultimately, it will be san francisco's police commission that will have to approve the chief's plan along with the funding. with a closer look, i'm allen martin. all right, we have been seeing a few raindrops on our live cameras outside, but jim is assuring us this is not going to be an issue. >> it won't be a washout. a few more drops headed our way as light shower activity does continue. lingering off the coast at this hour. we're looking at partly cloudy skies in and around the bay area, as we look, we see the hills beginning to turn brown already. and again, we will stick up light shower activity here and there today. partly cloudy on the bay as well. look for breezy conditions this afternoon, it's clear, or should say this windy pattern will develop this afternoon as well. keep a bit of a chill in the air here as we will see breezy conditions throughout the region. and the chance of showers from a weak frontal boundary just to

the north. a live entrance from this doppler picking up returns off the coast. and again, to our north. most of this energy will remain in the north bay, but we could see again a few showers on and off through the day. i think the main feature will be the clouds and the cool temperatures which will likely prevail here into tomorrow. partly cloudy across the interior as we just saw, light sprinkles at that time coast with cool temperatures, the warmer spots into the mid- to upper 60s today. cooling back to the upper 50s to low 60s by the time we hit the beach. that's way below normal for this time of year, anywhere from five to ten degrees for most locations. so it will be a chilly memorial day weekend here as we see the boundary weakening as it approaches the shoreline here. right now, the brunt of it is just to our north, up around the fort bragg region and it will likely remain for the most part in the north bay. look at the tail end of it here, cool and blustery conditions through the day with a slight chance of sprinkles in

the greater bay area. right now, a few drops on remote cameras, but that's about it. and rain fall amounts will not be impressive out of this, but nonetheless, a few sprinkles here and there, most of it to the north. and also the high country, looking at a mix of snow and rain with a snow level of about 6500 feet. in the mountains, which means they'll pick up another 2 to 6 inches of fresh snow for the ski season that seems to never end up in the tahoe area. shouldn't make it down to pass level, but fresh snow tonight into tomorrow. as we look for the cool pattern the bay to produce temperatures in the mid- to upper 60s for the warmer locations today, should be bumping up into the 70s for tomorrow. but again, continued cloudy ask cool with strong winds this afternoon. look for mid- to low 60s in and around the bay. upper 50s at the coast. and for the seven day expectations here, we see a bit of a bump tomorrow as conditions warm slightly, but just a few degrees, cooling

down again come midweek, another weak disturbances across the region, very spring- like pattern here, not a lot of rain or moisture in it, but just the fact that it's even still around. typically we're entering the summer draught season about this time of year. but now, as has been the trend all year, we continue cool and wet across the area. so plan accordingly and keep in mind, the lakes, rivers and creeks are running high, fast and cold throughout the state for the next few months. so heads up if you're headed out to do water sports activities. >> certainly. >> yeah. >> hopefully everybody has something planned for the weekend. jonny depp faces down cruise at the box office and the smart take over the fairy building. what is next in today's list. also, well, we'll billion right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,
