developments and joins us now with more. >> reporter: good morning. they are not talking a lot about what this new evidence is but his defense attorneys have brought forth several family members to defend him. >> my son is innocent from the bottom of my heart. >> what do you base that on? >> because i know my son. he doesn't like sports. he doesn't go to place like that. >> reporter: she is referring to dodger stadium. she says that giovanni ramirez has never been here and isn't even a dodgers fan. ramirez of course was arrested in east hollywood over a week ago and still has not been officially arraigned on charges of beating bryan stow on march 31. ramirez is in jail on an unrelated parole hold but police have maintained that he is their prime suspect. in addition to what you just heard from ramirez's mother, lawyers say his 10-year-old daughter is prepared to testify that she was with her father that day even though she was supposed to be at school.

brian is still here at san francisco general hospital in critical condition. he is apparently being weaned off his fourth seizure medication. we'll hear from his mother in the next half hour. >> thank you, anne makovec in san francisco. there is now a reward for information to help find a nursing student who was last seen in the east bay on friday. the family of 26-year-old michelle lee has collected $20,000 for the reward. flyers with the reward are posted near the kaiser hospital in hayward where she left class friday evening and disappeared. >> she didn't deserve to have this happen to her. [ crying ] i just want her home. >> today hayward investigators plan to talk with fairfield police about the case n april

of last year nursing student disappeared. no suspects in that case. a deadly crash in marin county about 1 a.m. this morning. it's on northbound u.s. 101 just south of san antonio road. it appears a car crashed into the center divide and struck by a van. a 22-year-old woman was killed. four people with minor injuries. no word when it will be cleared from the road. this morning, police are look at video to help investigate a deadly shooting at a neighborhood block party and sideshow in oakland. three people were shot on sunday night and the music was overtaken by screams from the street. a documentary filmmaker happened to be there. >> they were just shooting randomly. it seems like one person heard a gunshot and anybody else with a gun in the area just started

shooting. >> a man passed before the camera openly carrying a gun. witnesses say it's hard to tell who was the shooter because after the shots were fired, many people pulled out guns. cameras continued to roll as people gathered around the victim. 29-year-old eric bush of san leandro and 28-year-old latoya kenny of union city died at the scene. family and friends will hold a vigil tonight for the san jose mother of five murdered over the weekend. a memorial has been set up for melissa ross shot and killed while driving near helyer park saturday night. a 20-year-old relative riding with her was wounded. the motive is unclear but ross' family says it is a case of mistaken identity. faulty breathalyzers may not force santa clara county to drop too many of their drunk driving cases. prosecutors reviewed 800 cases after learning of a defect in a breathalyzer yoursed by the san jose and the palo alto police departments. the "mercury news" reports

prosecutors found potential problems with just 42 of the cases. they dropped charges in just one. in most cases police took a second blood alcohol test at the police station. a sidewalk on the golden gate bridge is closed up today starting today. >> that's right. the closure is part of a seismic retrofitting project so the entire west sidewalk will be closed through september. bicyclists, joggers and pedestrians will all share the east sidewalk during that time. people on bikes will have 24- hour access while others will be able to use the walkway during daylight hours. >> that will make things crazy on the bridge. >> walk out. >> the bikes go by at 10 miles per hour. >> and they ring their little bells letting you know they are coming through. but watch out. clear the path. have you done that yet since you came back? >> i drove but not walked across yet. weather-wise, you'll get wet walking across the golden gate bridge. >> can you believe it? here we go. the final day of may and we're talking about more rain and

this is just the beginning of more showers moving through all week. you can already see scattered showers showing up around the bay area right now most of it just light but the cells are coming down. it's going to continue on and off throughout the day today. more showers on the way and coming days we have more rainfall too. you can see the system a weak system making its way in across our skies but enough to produce some rainfall and get things wet. temperatures very mild under mostly cloudy skies right now mainly into the 50s. scattered light showers showing up around much of the bay area right now especially in the northern half. by the afternoon, these numbers running well below the average. 15, almost 20 degrees below normal as we head throughout the bay area. now, we just don't see these showers too often this late in the year. and here we go. we continue with the showers as we head in toward tomorrow. maybe the possibility of thunderstorms, isolated hail. i think we catch a break on thursday. but i think that storm system on friday may come in late in the day. but that could be a real

soaker, especially friday night into saturday morning. so you have some weekend plans? looks like things could be wet on saturday. we may see continued showers as we head into sunday and possibly into monday, as well. so going to keep things wet as we head over the next seven days. can you belief that? >> i still can't. i tell you, when that rain hits it gets busy on the freeways. so we'll hope it stays as dry as long as possible. golden gate bridge right now looking good working your way out of san francisco into marin county. not too bad. north of there we have a trouble spot. we're monitoring this overnight fatal accident that happened just after 1:00 north of novato. the left lane is blocked. looks like chp crews are on scenes northbound 101 at san antonio. they are waiting for tow trucks to completely clear it. left lane blocked. we'll continue to keep you updated.

conditions that have ended previous cease-fire efforts. a rebel leader says an offensive against qaddafi will be launched soon. this comes after eight top army officers have defected from qaddafi's military. it is 4:40 now. another world-renowned financial expert has been arrested accused of raping a made at a new york hotel. police say mahmoud abdel omar was arrested at manhattan's pierre hotel yesterday morning. the 74-year-old businessman is the former chairman of one of egypt's major banks. he is accused of sexually abusing the made and holding her against her will inside his room. this comes of course weeks after they arrested the chief of the imf dominique strauss- kahn on similar allegations. time now 4:40. will she or won't she? what sarah palin said when she was asked point-blank, are you running for president? >> some heavyweight help for the victims of the joplin tornado. how the circus is lending muscle power and why it is

the national average. the house of representatives votes today on a bill to raise the debt ceiling. the $2.4 trillion bill is not expected to pass. that is because all republicans are poised to vote against it. the house speaker is insisting that any increase in the debt limit be linked to an even larger amount of spending cuts. president obama has invited house republicans to the white house tomorrow. former alaska governor sarah palin is adding more fuel to speculation that she will enter the 2012 presidential race. she is touring historical sites on the east coast by bus including stops in washington, d.c., maryland, virginia, and pennsylvania. but officially she is offering no hint on whether she will seek the republican nomination for president. >> i don't know. i honestly don't know. it's still a matter of looking at things and considering much. there truly is a lot to consider before you throw yourself out there. >> former massachusetts governor mitt romney is

tornado. the picadilly circus was supposed t joplin, missouri is getting some heavyweight help cleaning up after the devastating tornado. the piccadilly circus was supposed to perform on memorial day but instead it's donating elephants to move tons of debris. many neighbors are grateful, others worry about the safety of the animals. >> it's sat that they are putting the animals through it. >> i think it's not a publicity stunt. >> the number of people missing in joplin is down to 29. fema says it may bring in trailers like those used after katrina to house the thousands displaced by the tornado eight days ago. an unusual story of survival now from tornado alley. a horse named fiona was found

tangled up in a metal and debris may see in oklahoma city after the tornado hit a week ago. she is okay now after being trapped in rubble for a day. she managed to get herself out of the field and into the barn even though she is blind. the commander of the space shuttle endeavour says he believe he made the right decision to go on the mission after his wife recovers after being shot in the head this past january. >> i don't have any regrets. we trained as a crew. the six of us trained for over a year and a half to get ready for the flight. so when january 8 happened, when that day came, it didn't look likely i would be on this flight but her recovery went well enough and things lined up with her being able to go to rehab in houston that i was able to rejoin my crew and complete this mission. certainly no regrets. >> the endeavour is scheduled

[ laughter ] >> some amazing video of wild weather all down under. >> an australian tv helicopter captured these. imagines of a waterspout that formed off the coast of new south wales on sunday. the funnel looks to be about 2,000 feet tall. stormy weather spawned at least three waterspouts which often form in groups like tornadoes do on land. that's m amazing. a group of tornadoes on land they call a family. you don't want that family in your neighborhood. we have showers in the bay area again and yes, it looks like the beginning of more wet weather as we have a series of storms going to be dropping in. showers mainly focused now in the north bay but spreading slowly to the south.

more unsettled weather through the next few days. an impressive cold front and you can see clouds, showery throughout today. we'll catch sunny breaks in between the clouds but out the door this morning, let's prepare for some more raindrops. bring that umbrella with you. mostly cloudy skies, mild temperatures and that's because of that cloud cover outside but the chance of showers will continue on and off throughout the morning and into the afternoon. highs running a good 15 to 20 degrees below average today. only in the 50s and 60s outside but those showers are on tap. numbers outside now, 52 in livermore, 52 light showers into santa rosa. 52 showers into san rafael, as well. and if you plan on traveling around the state the further north you go the better chance to pick up rain. about 66 in sacramento. the high country they are looking at a mixture of rain and snow as we are seeing the storm system drop through. we could see snow levels drop in the bay area down 4,000 feet as we head in toward tomorrow. so the storm door still open. that's really the story.

this trough continues along the west coast. until that ridge builds in we are going to see more of these storms dropping n another one coming a good soaker toward the weekend. for today more showers. it's going to be on and off mostly just light showers. by tomorrow the core of the low moves in across the bay area sparking thunderstorms and you get those thunderstorms you could see hail, could be an interesting day of weather toward the central valley for tomorrow. numbers around the bay area today looking at 60s into the south bay. 50s out toward the coastline. and some scattered showers. further north, better chance of rainfall. about 67 degrees, one of the warmer spots in brentwood. 63 degrees in alameda. and 61 degrees in berkeley. to the north more raindrops showing up. none of the cells will produce a lot of rain although we could see a third of an inch of rain in some of the wetter spots through the middle of the week. over the next seven days, we have some scattered showers continuing into tomorrow with

the possibility of some thunderstorms. i think a break on thursday. the timing on the storm on friday a little difficult right now. i think it will come in the latter part of the day bringing with it more rain, possibly some heavier amounts of rain overnight friday night and into saturday. that could be a very good soaker making its way through the bay area. i think showers continue into sunday. i kept them out on monday but there is even a possibility we could see some leftover showers on monday and yes, i'm starting to get a lot of e-mails, enough is enough with the rain already! but next week things should be brighter as we'll see more sunshine coming our way. let's check traffic with gianna. >> thank you, lawrence. all right. we're getting more information about this trouble spot in novato. just north of novato, northbound 101 at san antonio. we have been monitoring this overnight accident that resulted in a fatality. northbound 101 the left lane still blocked so one lane is open according to the chp and they say it's not impacting traffic too badly through there. it's still very early. there aren't a lot of cars on the road north 101 at san antonio so the left lane

remains blocked for the investigation. they are waiting or two flatbed tow trucks to arrive on scene to load the vehicles up and get them off the freeway. so we'll keep you updated on that. still okay to take north 101 because it's early, not impacting traffic too badly. roadwork eastbound 4 at loveridge. full freeway closure until 5:30 at least. bay bridge toll plaza not bad. look good towards this direction. clear across the upper deck into san francisco. no delays coming out of san francisco across the lower deck towards oakland. golden gate bridge off to a good start, as well. if you are traveling south 101 out of marin county from 37 to 580, easy eight-minute ride clear into san francisco. san mateo bridge yesterday we had a wind advisory, today very quiet and calm no delays either direction. if you are traveling along 880 or plan to this morning through oakland so far, so good. traffic nice speeds in the 60s. live look at 880 in oakland,
