there now but doesn't look like a rainout. just scattered showers this morning. most of that confined to the north bay but a good cell making its way into the north near santa rosa and southward. it will taper off but there is more rain coming. gianna franco has traffic. >> traffic is good news this morning. live look at the golden gate bridge. not a bad start to your thursday morning drive. roadwork southbound 101 away from the waldo tunnel if you hit the brakes. overall a nice start. that's a look at traffic. back to you. >> thank you. it is 4:31. it is a case that the entire world is watching. sentencing today for the couple who kidnapped jaycee dugard 20 years ago and held her captive in antioch. >> a big question is whether dugard will speak at the sentencing today in placerville. phillip and nancy garrido pleaded guilty in april to

kidnapping and rape charges. they are expected to be sent to prison for life. one reason for plea deal was to keep dugard and her daughters who were fathered by garrido from having to testify at the trial. two lie detector tests but the results will remain a secret. that is the story for the man accused of beating bryan stow outside dodger stadium march 31. giovanni ramirez was in handcuffs when police took him for a polygraph exam yesterday. his defense team had administered a similar test in his jail cell tuesday night. the moon administered that test hinted that ramirez passed. >> can you tell us without giving away the store, how'd he do? >> that would be giving away the store. >> i'm sure this is going to disappoint everybody but this is our agreement with the lapd and the district attorney's offices, we're not going to announce them. >> ramirez has not been charged with the attack on bryan stow. but he is still in jail for

probation violations. hayward police have questioned a person of interest in the disappearance of a nursing student. the woman was once friends with 26-year-old michelle le. le was last seen friday after a nursing class at the kaiser permanente building in hayward. so far, investigators say they have talked to several friends and acquaintances and issued four separate search warrants. they call him the bluetooth bandit. san francisco police are trying to track down a clever con who is stealing credit cards from women's purses. unser hasan in san francisco with how this guy operates. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. san francisco police department are looking for a man they are calling the bluetooth bandit. they are calling him that because of the bluetooth earpiece he wears to coordinate his attacks. he is known as the bluetooth bandy the preying on female victims. san francisco police have surveillance video of the man who robs women who drape their

bags on chairs on coffee shops, restaurants and muni. he will then use his bluetooth to talk to accomplices who will distract victims as he robs them. sometimes he will put his coat to conceal his hand as he reaches into his victim's bag to grab his wallets. he will then send out his accomplices on shopping sprees racking up tens of thousands in purchases robbing them at starbucks, peet's coffee and then sending them to stores such as target, apple, costco, nordstrom. san francisco police department believes the bluetooth bandit may have several people working with them probably women and women who range in the age from 20 to 6 60. the suspect is black, 20 in his 40s, 5'8" to 5'11", 160 to 175

pounds. anyone with information is asked to call the san francisco police. >> anser hussein in san francisco, thank you. san rafael police hope surveillance video will lead them to the man who robbed a sandwich shop. investigators say the man was armed with a black semi- automatic handgun friday afternoon when he robbed the subway outlet at the marin square shopping center. you can see it here. anyone who recognizes the suspect is urged to contact bay area crimestoppers. there may be a reward, as well. >> hopes are fading fast for a deal that two reduce the number of layoffs in the san jose police department. talks broke down yesterday when negotiators from the city and the police officers association unable to reach an agreement on pension changes. city leaders are trying to reduce a budget deficit. without a deal, the city says it will have to lay off 278 officers. an agreement could save 156 of those jobs. yesterday was the deadline for getting a deal to present to

the city council. but the council could order city management back to the bargaining table. 4:36. pg&e says there is no way it can meet a june 20 deadline to produce safety documents on its gas pipeline system. state regulators ordered pg&e to produce those records in the wake of last year's deadly explosion and fire in san bruno. the documents involve welds on the pipeline dating back to the '50s. this week the utility requested a delay in the deadline saying the job to search for and organize the documents is more difficult than expected. caltrain investigating its 7th pedestrian death on the tracks this year. a man was hit and killed by a train last night just south of the san antonio station in mountain view. the man is not identified. it's not clear why he was on the tracks. all trains though are running on schedule this morning. it is 4:36 now. massachusetts under a state of emergency after a string of deadly tornadoes ripped through

the bay state. cameras caught this funnel cloud swirling over the connecticut river sucking up debris and dumping it everywhere. the twisters left at least four people dead and dozens injured. this area has seen tornadoes before but they are very rare. >> tend to think of snow and ice events. but we have seen the power of this event. it's something we didn't want to see very often. >> today 1,000 national guardsmen will help with search and rescue efforts in massachusetts. well, today experts will be checking the strength of a tornado that actually hit right here in northern california. >> today is expected to be calmer in the sacramento valley. dark clouds and heavy rain sweeping through yolo county yesterday afternoon. the system spawning several funnel clouds north of sacramento. meteorologists confirm at least one tornado touched down near yuba city. no damage was reported. hail the story east of

sacramento. this is a photo from a viewer in roseville where hailstones coated the ground some as big as quarter inch in diameter. 4:38. let's check traffic and weather. lawrence, you called this yesterday, saying that we should watch out for possible tornadoes. >> yeah. it was just one of those unusual situations. the core of the low making its way across california and, of course, you get that spring sunshine, the lift in the atmosphere just ripe for some of that wild weather. today we have showers in our forecast right now. most of that confined to the north bay but you can see if you are headed up 101, watch out. you have some rain falling through there heavy north of petaluma. as we head into the afternoon, this tapers off and looks like we should dry out for a brief break. then we have more stormy weather coming our way. here's the latest satellite image. not a well organized simple dropping by but just enough to squeeze out more rain this morning. by the afternoon, partly cloudy skies, dry weather, 69 degrees in san jose, 67 in concord,

about 64 in oakland and 63 in san francisco. next couple days, here we go again. late in the day on friday, another storm drops into the bay area. pretty good soaker. saturday, showers likely to continue as well as sunday and monday. but the middle of next week, how about this? mid-70s. >> yay! >> we'll see if it happens. >> i could cheer for that. we are keeping a close eye on the north bay where we are seeing some wet weather and so far no accidents. but construction northbound 880 between fruitvale and 5th avenue lanes closed until 5:00 so about 20 more minutes. here's live look at 880. things are moving along nicely through the area. heading towards the bay bridge, eastbound between 4th and the skyway, roadwork, various lanes blocked. that should be wrapping up within the next 45 minutes to an hour but so far things are clear on the bay bridge upper and lower deck.

took photos of the man using his computer after it was stolen. police initially showed no interest in this case. so he started a blog called, this guy has my macbook! and posted those photos online. >> i think people were surprised and amazed that software like this existed. a lot of people don't know it's out there and available. a lot of people were just entertained by the photos and thought it was funny. a lot of people were just cheering me on. they wanted some action to happen. they wanted the police to do something about it. >> well, it did happen. after media contacted police, kaufman got the action he wanted. officers arrested the man tuesday. he is due to be arraigned tomorrow. google is warning users to change their email passwords. that's after computer hackers in china broke into gmail attacks. the super attack hit hundreds of accounts including those belonging to senior government officials and political

activists. google believes hackers used phishing scams to trick them. a doomed elementary school in pinole will stay open for at least another year. the west contra costa school board just voted to keep shannon elementary school open. the decision to close the school was made two years ago and it was set to shut down after next week. but the board decided to reverse that decision. the "contra costa times" says there were concerns about the cost of moving students to other campuses and adding portable classrooms to other schools. californians want to vote and they would likely vote no. that's what a new survey has found about governor jerry brown's proposal to extend temporary tax increases. the public policy institute of california survey found 62% of state voters approve of the governor's revised budget proposal that calls for a special election but only 46% support the tax plan he wants on the ballot and 48% are opposed. wall street has another employment report to look at today.

president. he'll make it official in new hampshire, a key states in imary races. the f today mitt romney will announce he is running for president, announcing it in new hampshire a key state in the primary races. former massachusetts governor leads many national polls among republican candidates. he has already raised millions in campaign cash but don't count donald trump out of the race just yet. he told fox news in new york that he would run for president if he is not happy with the republican nominee and so far he is not impressed with the pack. he also says sarah palin wants him to run and he thinks he would be better off running perhaps as an independent. 4:48. high-profile sexual abuse case in new york have two luxury

hotels equipping their maids with panic buttons to allow housekeeping staff to alert hotel security of problems. the former head of the imf is accused of trying to rape a housekeeper at the sofitel hotel and last weekend a former egyptian banker was arrested for allegedly sexually abusing a pierre hotel housekeeper. a charter flight carrying the anaheim angels forced to make an emergency landing because of hydraulics. nothing like an emergency landing at l.a.x. to scare the crap out of us, was tweeted by a member of the team. the team finished the trip to anaheim by bus. no one was hurt. >> that would be scary. hey, folks. we have some more showers showing up in the bay area, most of it lighter and headed to the north right now in towards san rafael. seeing showers there, also up in towards santa rosa, petaluma, we continue to see

moisture along the 101. if you're careful, it will be wet early on. we are hoping get to the showers out of town for a brief break in the stormy weather. out the door, chance of showers this morning, mainly to our north. 40s and 50s right now, mostly cloudy skies. this afternoon, partly cloudy, warming up to near 70 in the warmest spots inland. 60s inside the bay with a mix of sun and clouds. partly cloudy, cool at the coast with 50s and a few 60s. exciting day yesterday, reports of funnel clouds, even a possible tornado toward the central valley. that moisture heading east but we have another band moving onshore. that will keep us wet this morning. but after that, things settle down a little. but this is only going to be a short break as we get ready for the big setup this weekend. this next low is going to drop off the coast and spin around and continue to send wave after wave of moisture in our direction. that means it could be a pretty

wet weekend ahead. computer models picking up on the showers to the north trying to drag it south as we head throughout the morning. but you will notice as we get into the afternoon, things dry out around the bay area. the skies parting and we're talking a lot of sunshine and a couple of clouds moving by and the rain should have ended. with that in mind, temperatures well into the 60s inland. 69 in san jose. 68 in fairfield. 67 in livermore. some 50s and 60s back toward the coast. next couple of days, get ready. we have more rain coming. another storm system moving in late in the day on friday. more showers continuing flight saturday. some of those heavy at times. showers continuing flight sunday and possibly monday. but looking at the brighter side of things by the middle of next week, sunshine and high pressure. all right, gianna, let's check traffic. >> at least we have something to look forward to, right, lawrence? >> yes. >> let's check the roads. so far, so good. the only thing is construction. from you going to take mass transit to avoid that, not a bad choice. it's on time this morning. bart, ace, muni metro and

caltrain problem-free. the roadwork northbound 880 between fruitvale and 5th avenue, various lanes blocked hoping to wrap it up in 20 minutes. in our live shot of 880 near oakland, traffic doing well in both directions, no snags. elsewhere, roadwork on the bay bridge, at least as you approach the lower deck eastbound between 4th street and the skyway, we have construction in various lanes, slower speeds as you hit the area but past that, things cruise along. if you are coming off the maze towards the bay bridge into the toll plaza, here's live look. no delays, very light. metering lights are off and no troubles across the upper deck if you are heading into san francisco. southbound 101, from the waldo tunnel to the north tower, we have some road construction there. this is a live look at the golden gate bridge. they should be wrapping that up within the next 10 minutes but not impacting traffic. still light through there this thursday morning. san mateo bridge off to a good start, as well. an easy 14 minutes between 880 and 101. no delays on 101 and the

okay. that plate will have four sections with fruits and vegetables taking up half of it. a new warning about some birth control pills. the "new york times" reporting the food and drug administration is studying yaz and other birth control pills from bayer. recent studies reported in europe found women taking the pills have a 2 to 3 times greater risk of blood clots. the fda review is expected to be completed this summer. long commutes aren't just adding stress. they can also cause some rocky roads in your marriage. >> a new swedish study shows that people who drive to and from work for more than 45 minutes a day have a 40% greater chance of divorce. the risk of divorce is highest during the first few years of commuting, as well. >> lots of times to spend with each other in traffic. >> if you keep adding stress, at some point, the foundation is going to break. >> researchers say long commutes can also lead to a

number of things including obesity, loneliness, stress and insomnia. so buy a house close to work. more suspicions raised about cycling legend lance armstrong. according to the "associated press," director of the swiss anti-doping laboratory told federal authorities last fall that armstrong's test result from the 2001 tour deswiss were suspicious. of 0"60 minutes" is standing by its story. another one of the nation's most recognizable athletes is retiring. shaquille o'neal is retiring from the nba after 19 years. he announced it online.
