blocking the on-ramp. south 101 at millbrae. a ramp blocked troubles there south of there. back to you for now. >> thank you. it took only a few seconds yesterday. a house fire that quickly turned into an inferno. that fire at the house on berkeley way in san francisco's diamond heights neighborhood killed one firefighter and critically injured a second. >> elizabeth wenger has the story. >> reporter: she is fighting for his life this morning. he is still in critical condition. our crews were there yesterday morning as this fire broke out. it happened yesterday morning for san francisco's diamond heights neighborhood. it only took a few seconds for this to become an inferno. the flames moved so quickly that three firefighters were hurt in a flashover. that's heat so intense that it

burns at 1100 degrees fahrenheit. now it actually moved too quickly to save the life of lieutenant vincent perez a 21- year veteran of san francisco fire. a former marine and a previous alameda county sheriff's deputy. with a final salute his fellow firefighters said good-bye to the 48-year-old. his body was gurneyed out of san francisco general. obviously lots of grief this morning for the men and women of station 26. >> great guy, great sense of humor. as a firefighter he was the first guy in and last out, a real firefighter's firefighter. >> the members you see gathered here, it's out of respect for lieutenant perez and his service to the city. >> reporter: another firefighter anthony valerio was critically injured, on life support here at san francisco general. we understand from talking to his brother yesterday, he is still unable to breathe on his own. but right now kind of moment to

moment. but they are still hopeful. a third firefighter tracy courtney a female firefighter actually was also hurt we understand not badly though and she was able to be released from the hospital yesterday. but obviously, you know, firefighters are heroes so this is a very sad day for firefighters everywhere. and really for everyone here in san francisco. back to you. >> thank you. elizabeth mentioned that those firefighters were caught in a flashover, which is what happens when the temperature in the fire area reaches about 1100 degrees. menlo park's fire chief demonstrates the situation in a fire simulator. he says the flashover starts in the heated smoke at the ceiling. firefighters will probably see jets of fire in the smoke over their heads. >> all those particles in the smoke, all the furnishings,

products in the room are simultaneously heated to a point where they completely come bus and it's fatal. >> firefighters cut holes in rooftops to try to release the superheated gases that cause flashovers. a san francisco firefighter died in the same area in 1995. that time, 60-mile-an-hour winds fanned a house fire on a street that was less than a mile away. three firefighters were trapped when the garage door suddenly closed on them. one died, 11 other firefighters were injured. the diamond heights area is particularly dangerous because the canyon up there makes it very windy. and we'll be following the condition of the other critically injured firefighter. we also have extensive coverage of the fire and the fire chief's news conference as you'll find on our website, cbssf.com. it is 4:35 now on this friday. oakland police say a man who aimed a gun at an officer is now in custody. the officer first stopped the suspect about 8:00 last night near 67th and bancroft after the man pulled out a gun, the

officer fired a shot. police say the suspect then tried to escape into residential yards in the neighborhood there. but police found him, arrested him shortly after midnight last night. fbi is about to take over an investigation into alleged police corruption in contra costa county. that's what sources have told cbs 5 as the d.a.'s office plans to announce a major development sometime this afternoon. now, the criminal charges are against a former concord private investigator and a former law enforcement officer from the state department of justice and the danville and san ramon police departments. the allegations include stealing cash, drugs and guns from police seizures. 4:36. the man accused in the bryan stow attack in los angeles has a date with the parole board this morning. giovanni ramirez is in jail on a parole violation. he has not been charged with stow's beating. l.a. police have questioned ramirez's 10-year-old daughter now. he says he was babysitting her at home when stow was attacked. there is a slight chance he

could be released after today's hearing. we'll have a live report coming up at 5:00. some closure in the kidnapping of jaycee dugard. >> after pleading guilty to abducting her nearly 20 years ago, serial sex offender phillip garrido was sentenced to 431 years in prison, his wife 36 years to life. during the sentence, the judge called phillip garrido a poster child for sexual predators and reinvented slavery. neither defendant spoke or even made eye contact. in a statement read by phillip garrido's attorney, he said he accepted responsibility and expected no leniency yesterday. garrido said he wanted to spare dugard and her children at a trial. jaycee dugard did not appear at court but issued a statement saying, i hated every second of every day for 18 years. and you stole my life and that of my family. we are also hearing what

life was like for jaycee dugard from grand jury testimony made public after the garridos were sentenced. it includes dugard's descriptions of the day she was kidnapped in south lake tahoe. she discussed how garrido initially approached her in a car asking for directions and zapped her with a stun gun. dugard also talked about her 18 years of captivity and sexual abuse at the their home in contra costa county. dugard gave birth twice while in captivity. she cited her daughters as a reason she didn't try to escape. "i didn't know what to do. i couldn't leave. i had the girls. i didn't know where to go, what i would do for money or anything. i didn't have anything." dugard has a memoir due out in july entitled "a stolen life." tonight at 5:00 the family of that missing nursing student will hold a candlelight vigil in hayward near where she was last seen a week ago. 26-year-old michelle le disappeared last friday after leaving a class at the kaiser

medical center in hayward. police say le's phone was transmitting signals until midday on saturday. investigators have issued several search warrants and have interviewed at least 15 people. it is 4:39. let's get another quick look at traffic and weather. erica standing by to tell us more about what we can expect and keep the umbrella handy, right? >> yes. certainly keep the umbrella handy for today and the next couple of days because conditions are going to be wet. and they are going to be cold. folks, we're less than one month away from the summer season and it certainly does not feel like that at all. here's a look at what we have coming down. here's all that energy making its way in from the north. so this is going to start to close on off. it's going to pack a punch as it dips down. we'll have increasing cloud cover and moisture and showers for the region. highs today still below

lawmaker paychecks. in the fall elections, they passed a bill to prevent legislators from collecting salary and benefits if they don't meet the deadline. city of alameda wants to close its animal shelter to save some money but in a public hearing last night, animal advocates say in the shelter closes the animals would be -- if the shelters close the animals would be sent to other cities. they want nonprofits and volunteers to take over. >> the bay area has the leading thinking on this issue of how to get shelters operating well. and alameda has been not sort of allowing that to happen for many years. >> the council is taking public comment until they sign the budget on june 30th. the jobs report for may coming out shortly and is expected to be bleak. most economists expect about 100,000 jobs were created last month, down substantially from earlier estimates. but they also think the unemployment rate will dip to

8.9%. san jose though topping the list of the best cities for job hunters so that is some encouraging news for people in the bay area. that city listed 200 job postings for every 1,000 people according to an employment search website. why? experts say the tech boom created jobs from customer sport and engineers. washington, d.c. and baltimore round out the top 3. today president obama will promote a deal that enables chrysler pay back its bailout loan six years ahead of schedule. fiat has agreed to bit 6% treasury interest in chrysler for half a billion dollars. fiat will also buy the government's interest in a retirement trust. that gives fiat a majority stake in chrysler. today mr. obama scripts a chrysler plant in toledo. and another internet startup preparing to go public. >> linkedin did it a couple of weeks ago and now groupon just

represented the shooter's ex- wife in their divorce. an attorney has identified that victim as gerald shelley of yuma. criminal charges to be filed today against former presidential candidate john edwards. he is under investigation for allegedly using campaign money to cover up an extramarital affair in 2008. "associated press" reports he could either be indicted or negotiate a guilty plea. national guard soldiers going door to door in massachusetts searching for tornado survivors. a 13-year-old boy captured the tornado on his video camera. the twister swept through the state on wednesday. 18 cities and villages in the bay state were all damaged. well, if you are heading out the door, be sure to grab that umbrella because you're going to need it. and you might not want to let go until at least monday. heading out the door here we can see conditions are going to

be really cool this morning trending in the 40s into the 50s so mostly cloudy start and then those showers are coming into the region. inland we could see temperatures ranging in the 60s, the bay also seeing a in the 60s. coast a logical cooler there lows ranging in the mid-50s for today. and as we take a look at our satellite and radar, we have this low. this is what's going to come into the region here. that's going to bring us a lot of energy, a lot of instability, and certainly a lot of showers. showers today increasing into rain so lots of rain showers by tomorrow into sunday. as we take a look at our pinpoint forecast here, our trueview forecast, you can see that those rain showers are making their way in denoted in the yellow. we can see moderate showers and we can even see heavier conditions as well by sunday. but then easing up a little bit by monday so clearing out just in time for the next workweek. but this weekend, certainly very wet. let's look at the highs for

into oakland. oakland itself life look at 880 near the coliseum, northbound cruising along towards the maze. nice speeds southbound into hayward and all the way into the south bay. now, we did have reports of an accident south 880 right at dixon landing. chp is heading to the scene. no word on blocked lanes. if you plan to take the san mateo bridge, 68 miles per hour through there. things moving very nicely. you're clear no wind advisories to report. everything looking good in both directions between 880 and 101. bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain on time. here's 101 as you work your way through san jose. still very light. traffic -- those headlights are going northbound but overall not a bad friday dry. remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 740-am and 106.9- fm. >> thank you. some scientists in the united kingdom say they discovered a new strain of the superbug mrsa found in british cows and appears to be spreading to humans, as well. the strain was identified in cows' milk by researchers who

were initially studying udder infections. the researchers say it should not be too much of a concern though for milk drinkers since pasteurization kills the bug. and this morning another black eye for muni. the agency wants to know why a driver failed to let passengers off the train after a rider got sick. a spokesman said the operator was ordered to drop off all passengers at the montgomery station in san francisco. the next stop would be west portal so the train could be cleaned after a required vomited but the operator kept on going past montgomery at 35 miles per hour and finally stopped at the van ness station after realizing people were still on board. muni is now questioning that driver. students in san francisco may soon be free to leave class whenever they want. the school district is considering a plan that would let kids take bathroom breaks without permission. district leaders were worried that in some cases teachers were denying requests as a punishment. they say that that puts some students are health issues at
