[ music ] good evening. i'm ann. firefighters across the bay area are mourning the loss of the second san francisco firefighter to die in the line of duty this week. tony passed away this morning from injuries suffered fighting a house fire two days ago. ann on the second emotional tribute this week. >> reporter: in the pouring rain, surrounded by dozens of fridays firefighters, the chief made the announcement so many had feared. >> unfortunately this morning at about 7:40, firefighter paramedic tony valerio was pronounced deceased. >> reporter: the 53-year-old firefighter paramedic had worked for the city for 27 years. one of two firefighters who died after being overcome by a flash-over of super-heated gases while fighting a house fire in diamond heights on thursday. he arrived at the hospital badly burned in cardiac arrest. >> this was a minute-to-minute

struggle for his life for when he got hurt to when he died this morning. minute-to-minute and we lost. it was just too overwhelming. we couldn't bring him back. >> doctors say it was a blessing that he had 40 hours surrounded by his family before he died. >> i have had a lot of trouble the last couple of days sleeping. i can't even think about life without him right now. i don't know. it seems like east side still -- he's still here. i can't really process that he has actually passed. >> he was the oldest of seven children. his family called the fire department his second family. >> reserve attention. >> reporter: they lined up to salute his body as it was wheeled into the medical examiner's van this morning. >> it is very difficult. you are mourning the loss of one. and then to have another one very close from the same fire is challenging for us and it's painful for us. but we will be strong. >> i would think he would want all of you to remember him as

that happy person, always telling jokes and just living life. and that's what he did. >> he was very selfless. you know, he loved everybody. he loved life. >> reporter: in san francisco, ann macavich, cbs 5. >> the cause of the fire that took the firefighters' lives is still under investigation tonight. the families lived at the home at 134 berkeley way in diamond heights and was allowed brief access inside today to retrieve some belongings. a woman and three children escaped the flames thursday running into the street yelling "fire." neighbors are still stunned by the events that followed. >> all of a sudden there was this huge cloud of black smoke that came out and that was kind of scary. so at that point i knew it was bigger. and then we just watched the whole scene unfold. >> part of the street where the house burned is still blocked off. the area is considered a crime scene until the investigation is complete. funeral services for the

firefighters are still pending. we will post any new developments at our website cbssf.com, as well as information about trust funds that have been set up for their families. people who live in the bay area are used to the foggy june gloom. but not record rainfall. an outdoor garden fair got a lot more watering than expected. don? >> that's right, ann. it is more like january than june. and they are adapting to what some are calling the new normal in weather. rain is good for plants and other living things but really bad for social gatherings at the garden of lake merit a year in the making. >> you can never predict the weather. it's a garden. and we keep our smiles on, keep upbeat and just, you know, it is what it is. and actually gardens are beautiful in the rain. >> reporter: last year here it was 80 degrees and people were looking for relief from the heat. this year they are making the best of a wet situation.

this port-a-potty became airborne after the winds picked it up. with chp helped the owner was able to wrestle it to the side of the road and put it back on the truck. despite rain and mud the fair was also a go in antioch. not that the pigs minded the mud. nor did participants like mike redding who was involved in a barbecue competition. >> the cold temperature is a little hard to keep your barbecue warm, but not really. it doesn't affect you too much really for the amateur barbecue it is rain or shinyway. so here we are doing our thing. >> reporter: some sunshine now. but it does seem that this bad weather, ann; bringing out the best in people. they are learning to adapt. actually if you plan something for a year i suppose that's what you have to do. >> i was just thinking how lucky you are it is not raining right now. in fact some sunshine and a slight breeze. >> i got that raincoat really close. >> don at lake merit, thank you. looks like don will need that

raincoat. erica joins us now with a look at the storm. >> well, ann, right now there is a little bit of a break in the moisture. but we are seeing that pattern continue. now, as we zoom on in, take a really close look here, we can see, for the most part, san francisco is seeing no showers right now. but that is expected to change as that low pushes more moisture into the area. hayward, livermore seeing some scattered showers right now. light to moderate scattered showers. as we head on north sonoma is seeing quite a bit of precipitation there and the bulk of that moisture is heading right over the area here pushing towards napa pushing east and right behind it we do have that new low. folks we can take a look and see that we have a lot of action going on now. abundant record breaking rainfall for san francisco, oakland and san jose. ann, back to you. >> all right, erica, thank you. checking some bay area headlines, friends and family of 26-year-old michelle lee are holding out hope that she will be found alive. they held a vigil last night where her suv was found a week

ago. at kaiser permanentein hayward and she hasn't been seen or heard from since. they have leads and several persons of interest but have made no arrests. the family is offering a $45,000 reward. a shoplifting incident at an oakland store has led to murder charges against a 14- year-old boy. police say the teenager was trying to steal two bottles of vodka from the oak noelle market on mountain boulevard tuesday morning. 57-year-old gong had a heart attack and died while chasing the boy. they charged the teen under the law that says any person responsible for a death during the commission of a crime can be charged with murder. and the berkeley grad facing espionage charges in iran celebrated his 29th birthday today in jail. friends and family of josh fatal fasted to protest his

[ music ] the rain didn't deter thousands of women from taking part in today's walk for hope. they are raising money for research and treatment of cancers that affect women. the walk was one of many nationwide to support the city of hope hospital in southern california. erica is here. she has our seven day forecast. she's promising there is at least one day with rain in it. >> there is a little bit of a break there by the end of next week though. we still have showers making their way into the region folks, abundant moisture. that trough is digging down deep. unusually low for this time of year. that is bringing all that have moisture. as we take a look outside, we can see the clouds just covering over us. so right now not much as far as showers go but we are expecting more today. by tonight into tomorrow. and possibly into sunday, folks. here is what we can expect as we take a look at the high definition doppler. we can see that vacaville is just seeing some showers there making their way over the region. fairfield as well. concord is also seeing the showers right now. as this low starts to make its

way over the region push towards the east here we will see a breakup here and then more showers on their way, folks, for tonight into tomorrow. and then again through morning. here is a look at what we can expect for tonight this evening, scattered showers all around. temperatures reaching from the low 50s to the mid-60s. by tomorrow we will see possible showers and thunderstorms. high 60s we will tap that and max out in those high 60s. still below average for this time of the year. here is a really good look at this system. this is absolutely beautiful. especially if you love meteorology. here is all of that moisture making its way into the region as it pushes on in. here is that leading edge the rear edge of that moisture ben. here is the center of that low that will hold steady. that's when we will see those thunderstorms by tomorrow. all of that energy and the cold air aloft, folks, so those thunderstorms by tomorrow. and then clearing out possibly on monday. but possibly because we do have the chances of showers during

the day-time hours. here is look at the expected highs for tomorrow. fairfield 66. concord is 69. livermore is 68. so these temperatures are still trending below average quite a bit. and as we take a look at the extended forecast we can see here that we do have those showers. for tonight possible thunderstorms. for tomorrow and then tuesday, wednesday and thursday by the end of the next workweek. we will see warmer temperatures on the way. gary? >> all right. thanks a lot, erika. another marathon in boston. as and red sox go 14. who had enough gas left in the tank to get enough w. who was back at it at the memorial. steve stricker sticking another way from way out. he loves the eagles. but it was enough to keep him on top of the leaderboard? stick around and find out. sports is up next. ,,,,

a few words so winds up getting tossed. cliff pennington ties the game up at 7. they blew the lead and blew his top. he got tossed for giving balls instead of strikes. and he might even face a suspension. the as took a lead on the sack fly in the 11th giving andrew bailey the first save chance of the year. but after striking out the first two batters he gave up back-to-back doubles and the red sox tie up another ball game. they make it eight on the season. drew struck out four times but ends up being the hero in the bottom of the 14th. right there the single was knocked n carl crawford the red sox win 9-8. the as have now lost five straight games. the five hour 15 minute game is the longest in the majors so far this year. >> if i never hear from cousins again or he never plays another

day in the big leagues i think we will all be happy. >> brian savings's comments created quite a buzz. buster posey is saying in a statement that it is time for everyone to move on. the tarp finally came off and scores in the fifth. manny burris makes the diving stop and he throws it into the dugout. it is 1-0 rockies. the bottom inning now, joe catches andre torres leaning and picks him off at 2nd. there is another look for you right there. rockies up 2-0 in the 6th. he cuts the deficit in the third homerun of the season. that's his fifth and did it on a day where it was bobblehead day. you got to hit a homerun on the day where it is your bobblehead day, right? rockies still up 2-1. brandon crawford gives it a lay but brian watch this a great catch and stops right there at the wall. rockies beat them 2-1.

more giants news, march bad news after the game the team placed brandon belt on the 15- day disabled list. he was hit by a pitch on tuesday night in st. louis. connor was called up from fresno to take his place. college baseball now, regionals from houston. and look at that, after losing their opener last night, cal beat elkhorn state 10-6. they will play rice in another elimination game. henderson won her 40th game of the season this morning. whoa, she can pitch. but she came up a little bit short. florida scored three runs in a third and win 5-2, eliminating the bears from the college world series where only four teams remain. upsets and injuries knocked out nearly all of the big names on the women's side of the french open. that left sciavoni and lee nah in the finals. she tried to make it back-to- back but not enough to get
