warm days. now, blustery winds. it is starting to feel like fire season again in the bay area. we need only to look south to arizona to see the potential for devastation. sharon chen near mill valley on the effort this weekend to keep the fire danger at bay. sharon? >> reporter: to take a look at some of what they're doing, take a look at the ridge line. marine county fire crews have carved a clear space to keep fire from spreading between mill valley and larkspur. for example, the fire prevention efforts are under way to protect communities and now, fire departments are asking homeowners to do their part to protect their property. >> this is a good example of somebody taking some time and doing some clearances. >> pla rin county fire crews are spending the -- marin county fire crews are inspecting homes one by one to see if they have done enough to prepare for the fire season that begins monday. and this home is a good example of ample defensible space, with tree and brush far enough away from the home to minimize the spread of flames. not all homeowners are open.

with late season rains, thick vegetation grows in abundance and near the mount tamalpais state park, the roads are windy and narrow and in case of a wildfire, residents must work now firefighters say to give their home the best chance for survival. >> sometimes it is one little thing that could happen to cause you to lose a louse. an example would be clearing your property but underneath your deck, leaving your wood. or underneath your deck, planting a juniper bush. and although you've cleared everything else, when that one bush catches fire, or the wood that you've got stored underneath your deck catches fire and your deck catches fire and your house catches fire, et cetera. >> now, firefighters have some wildfire prevention tips to safeguard your home for the fire season. keep 100 feet of defensible space outside your home. clear leaves and needles from roofs and eves and gutters and trim branches from the ground and 10 feet in marin county and

use lawn mowers and other power equipment before 10:00 a.m. and after 6:00 p.m. here in the throck morton area here today, fire crews inspected about 300 homes and 47 got notices that they are in violation, that they need to do a better job of clearing the vegetation, and giving that defensible space to the area and we're told by the fire department there will be no citations. this is primarily educational. and informational. as we enter this fire season. ann? >> certainly getting the word out. let me ask you, are these firefighter checks is, there an ongoing program? >> you know, every year, they normally do this, these inspections, most years, though, they would do these over the course of a couple of months. and this year, they decided that they would do this all out blitz here in marin county, over two days. today and tomorrow. going house to house. doing these inspections. to make sure that everyone is covered and everyone has enough time to comply. so everyone is ready. >> hopefully people take their suggestions. sharon near mill valley, thank

you. another san jose homicide making this year the city's deadliest in decades. 24-year-old hechter manuel garcia was found shot to death early this morning on nerdy avenue. he became san jose's 26th homicide of 2011. it already surpassed last year's total of 20 and is on pace to be the highest since the 1980s. pregnant teenagers recovering tonight from gunshot wounds. the 18-year-old was hit by gunfire from a passing car last night in modesto. the suspect sped away. the motive for the shooting is not yet known. and a hit-and-run accident on soto road near copy avenue in hayward has left a teenager seriously injured. witnesses say a white car, possibly a toyota corolla or volkswagen jetta hit the 17-year-old at 9:15 last night and sped away toward harder road. anyone with information is urged to call hayward police. former bart police officer johannes mehserle is spenting his last weekend in jail before being released on monday. mehserle will be set free after

serving 11 months of a two-year sentence. he was convicted last summer in the shooting death of oscar grant. grant's family is in l.a., awaiting his release. oakland mayor says she doesn't expect any problems. >> we're always are going to be prepared in case something happens. because in the past, we've had problems caused by outsiders. but we're not seeing any indications necessarily of big amassing of outsiders. >> the specific time of mehserle's release monday has not been disclosed. checking area head lipes, it was 40 years ago -- headlines, it was 40 years ago today that the indian occupation of alcatraz ended for 19 months. when u.s. marshals retook it in 1971, only 15 remained. still the activists say the protest was a success. protecting alcatraz from privatization and turning it no a national park. the small plane crash that killed a belmont couple is being

blamed on pilot inexperience in low visibility conditions. 75-year-old julie hueber was at the controls in may of last year when the piper cherokee crashed near livermore, killing hueber and her husband. federal investigators concluded mrs. hueber was not trained to fly by instruments only. and weather conditions had obscured the hilly terrain. still, no idea on a burned body found in san francisco's buena vista park. firefighters made the discovery, putting out a small brush fire early yesterday. the body was inside a blue recycling bin. investigators say the person was already dead. police are calling the death suspicious. and still no sign tonight of michelle lee. more than two weeks after she disappeared from a hayward nursing class. last night, her family held a vigil in southern california near lee's san diego high school. police are investigating the case as a homicide. lee's family plead for people to

offense this week. the hall of fame will go before the cupertino city council tuesday, with a proposal for joe montana to build a luxury hotel in the city, built on two city-owned parcels across from the proposed 49ers stadium. so far, city leaders seem excited about the project. and the prospects of meeting montana. the harsh reality of the booming numbers of foreclosures playing out today in the east bay. almost 200 homes were auctioned in oakland. many had opening bids at a small fraction of their value. some of the bidders were investors. others, families looking to fulfill the american dream of owning a home. >> i have a 2-year-old son. it is something, with the yard, you know, the house that he can go in and good neighborhood that we can add on to, a little bit. >> organizers say selling those homes is good for the local economy. carnival rides, livestock competitions and lots of deep fried food. it is county fair season in california. anne makovec on how the

decades-old tradition could become another victim though of current budget cuts. >> reporter: there are plenty of reasons to go to a county fair. >> the rides are fun. >> and the food is great. >> i really like to see animals. you will, too. especially this guy right here. >> curly fries. >> curly fries. >> reporter: it is the opening weekend at the san mateo county fair. and people are enjoying all of the spoils. but there may be fewer fun fairs in the future. as california's budget mess continues to spin out of control, state leaders are now talking about cutting $32 million in subsidies, for county fairs. >> that's not right. i mean the fair is part of the state of california. >> it is a huge hit to the fair industry. >> organizers here in san mateo county take $150,000 from the state each year, but they are one of the few self supporting organizations in the fair circuit. they fund raise all year round. >> from small fairs, they will

take -- there could be fairs that are absolutely eliminated by this $32 million cut. so it is really sad to see. >> reporter: she says fairs statewide will have to get creative. >> one of the great things about the fair network is that we all help each other. it is not like private competition, where you don't share your trade secrets. >> reporter: and these fair fans are hoping they will pull it off, or that state leaders pass on the threatened cuts. >> it is going to be bad. you know, if they do that. because people got to have some outlet. what are we going to have? they're cutting everything. pretty soon, what are they going to do when there is nothing left to cut? >> reporter: in san mateo, anne makovec, cbs 5. meanwhile, the state budget deadline is four days away. the senate is meeting this weekend, but there has been no movement on taxes. democrats want to extend increases to the sales and vehicle taxes. the republicans say that will hurt the economy. if the wednesday deadline is not met, the state controller says he will not issue paychecks to the lawmakers.

a power line to the legendary investor means millions of dollars for san francisco's poor and homeless. an anonymous winner bid more than $2.3 million to have lunch with warren buffett at a famed new york restaurant. all the money goes to san francisco's glide foundation. over the past 12 years, buffet's lunches have raised nearly $9 million, for the tenderloin neighborhood organization. you probably noticed it is blustery in parts of the bay area. the pin pont forecast is next. and breaking the myth about one of our creepiest crawlers. ,, we spend a lot of time together. well mainly in traffic. i'm serious. we've been together, what, a super long time. true. and at first it was all business, you know, i'd take him here, i'd take him there. everywhere. and over the years, we've really bonded.

you've been talking about this. especially creepy exhibit opens this weekend at the san francisco zoo. tarantulas alive and up close. it is aimed at erasing the many myths the zoo keepers call gentle giants. for one thing, their venom can kill small insects and other prey but they're not deadly to humans. that's an old wive's tale. the show goes through labor day. right about the time they go from mount diablo and call across the street. >> i learned something new. they aren't dangerous to humans. that is a good thing. >> we will bring in one for you. >> that's okay. don't worry it.

in the meantime, conditions out there, gusty. and it is a small trough working its way into the region. we're seeing some clouds for the most part. they will linger through tomorrow. so as we take a look at or satellite we can see that we have a trough that is digging on in quite a bit here and this is going to bring all of the clouds into the region, over the coast here so we will see the increase in wind spode and increase in wind -- wind speed and increase in wind gusts and cloud coverage and dissipating nicely by tomorrow. for tonight, temperatures ranging from the low 50s to the high 60s. clouds and breezy conditions on tap. our overnight lows are rather cool. we have santa rosa at 48. and napa at 43. and redwood city, pacifica, seeing 52 as the overnight low. for tomorrow, we will see warmer conditions and daly city. 59. and redwood city, 67. and millipitas, 70. and santa clara, 71 degrees. and folks will warm up just a bit as the workweek begins and that's good news. brentwood, 79 degrees. finally pushing towards those

80s as more seasonable conditions. and 77 for pittsburgh. and concord, 73 degrees. as we make our way to the north here and we will see petaluma at 72. and sonoma 72 for you and san rafael, 68 degrees. conditions warm up and here is the proof. we have the extended forecast, we will see warmer conditions by monday. so the temperatures are trending from the low 60s, into the 80s. and clearing up as far as those skies go. we will stair there through tuesday and wednesday -- stay there through tuesday and wednesday and possibly thursday. i so far have the low 80s for the inland area. friday and saturday, mid-60s. and to high 70s. so we certainly have something to look forward to. that's the weather. here is kim with sports. >> all right, thanks, erika. another giant lands on the disabled list. and will the thrill turn back the clock with a splash hit? sports is next.
