familiar. joel brown has the latest in washington with this. good morning, joel. >> good morning, betty. the news came down from al qaeda on a website affiliate with al qaeda that osama bin laden's long time lieutenant, ayman al zawahiri, is now officially taking charge of the terror network. al zawahiri has been at bin laden's side for years as a personal adviser and international head often acting as al qaeda's spokesman. he was born in egypt, and he turns 60 next week. he warned the u.s. it's facing an international community of muslims that seeks to destroy it and its allies. his whereabouts are unknown but it's believed he's hiding somewhere along the pakistan/afghanistan border. al zawahiri has been described as the "real brains of al qaeda" and he holds a $25 million bounty on his head from the state department. >> joel brown, thank you on that latest breaking news. nato aircraft pounded

libya's capital again this morning. it's not clear what was hit but smoke was seen rising near moammar gadhafi's compound in tripoli. the nato air campaign in libya is nearly three months old and gadhafi's compound has been a frequent target. congressional critics of u.s. participation in libya air campaigns say president obama has exceeded his powers citing the war powers resolution they say mr. obama must get congressional approval to deploy the military for more than 90 days but the white house is fighting back arguing the u.s.'s role doesn't violate any rules. >> the president has acted in a way in a manner consistent with the war powers resolution and we believe that the support for the overall mission, the support for the goal of protecting libyan civilians and holding colonel gadhafi accountable will continue. >> the white house argument does not hold water for a bipartisan group of ten lawmakers. they are suing the president claiming he used the u.n. and nato to bypass congress.

>> clearly we're trying to do an end run around the constitution and now it's going to be a matter for the court to decide whether or not they violated that constitution. >> as for the cost, the white house says that as of june 1st the u.s. operation in libya totals $715 million. this morning, congresswoman gabrielle giffords will do something she hasn't done in more than five months, wake up in her own bed. giffords was released yesterday from a houston hospital where she's been recovering since january's assassination attempt. alexis christoforous reports. >> reporter: gabrielle giffords is home with her husband for the first time in five months. doctors discharged the arizona congresswoman wednesday from the texas hospital where she's undergone surgeries and intensive therapy. >> the congresswoman is elated. this is a major step in her recovery and she's feeling very good about it, needless to say. >> reporter: giffords has made great strides since she was shot

at point blank range on the left side of the head in an attack in january. last week she had a ten-minute conversation with fellow congresswoman and friend with debbie wasserman schultz. >> she spoke to me in full sentences, initiated those sentences instead of just responding, which is what she's only been able to do recently and she's making remarkable progress. we're so proud of her. >> reporter: giffords has a long way to go. every day she'll travel 26 miles from her husband's home near houston to the hospital for six hours of rehabilitation. at home she'll have round the clock care. giffords has had to relearn how to walk and talk. and still struggles to find words and form sentences. susan heilman has shot three times in the same attack. >> gabby has a long way from the attack but look at that smile. she'll be back. i have confidence. >> astronaut mark kelly has confidence, too. expecting giving her a normal quality of life, more time outdoors and more time with her family will enhance her already

remarkable recovery. alexis christoforous, cbs news, new york. since congressman anthony weiner has refused to resign, they could strip him of his committee assignment. in the latest news, a former porn star told reporters weiner pursued her online and tried to get her to lie about their twitter conversations. the cia's public website has been hacked by the same group that said it breached the senate's system. it contains no classified information. the spy agency says it is looking into the matter. u.s. ties with pakistan are tense this morning, after the arrests of several pakistani informants who helped the cia find and kill osama bin laden. david martin reports. >> reporter: how low have relations with pakistan gone since the raid on bin laden's compound? the deputy director of the cia told a closed door hearing on

capitol hill it's a three on a scale of ten. according to republican senator lindsey graham, relations are close to the breaking point. >> we're at a crossroads with pakistan. we're on a collision course with pakistan. >> reporter: while the u.s. wants pakistan to go after the support network which allowed bin laden to hide in plain sa sight, pakistan has arrested and interrogated five people suspected of helping the cia pull off the raid. it's all part of a spy versus spy game the u.s. plays with one of its most important applies, and defense secretary gates told democratic senator patrick leahy, get used to it. >> how long do we support governments that lie to us? when do we say enough is enough? >> based on 27 years in cia and four and a half years in this job, most governments lie to each other. that's the way business gets done. >> reporter: although cia drone strikes against terrorist safe havens in pakistan's border area

continue without letup, pakistani intelligence at the same time actually protect some of the terrorist groups. the cia gave pakistan the location of two compounds where the explosives smuggled across the border to kill american soldiers in afghanistan are manufactured. someone in pakistani intelligence apparently alerted the terrorists who immediately emptied out the compounds. right now the pakistanis are pushing the u.s. away. they have kicked out most of the americans who were training their military. david martin, cbs news, the pentagon. in iowa this is the day when the town of hamburg finds out if a new makeshift levee holds back the missouri river. it was quickly built by the army corps of engineers after floodwaters busted through a primary levee along the swollen missouri river. people living near that river and the new levee have already been evacuated. just ahead on the morning news, asian markets follow wall street's lead and stock prices

the prime minister of greece plans to reshuffle his cabinet today as the financial crisis there grows. angry demonstrators took to the streets to protest a new austerity plan after talks with opposition leaders failed. there are renewed concerns greece could default on its massive debt which could affect the global economy. on the "cbs moneywatch" a rough day for stocks in asia. ashley morrison is here with that. >> good morning to you, betty.

worry over greece's problems weighed heavily on asian markets this morning. the nikkei lost more than 1.5%. hang seng was down almost 2%. the concern is that greece's debt problems could continue spreading to the rest of europe. today wall street gets a weekly jobless claim numbers and on wednesday stocks had their worst day of the month, erased all of tuesday's gains. the dow lost 179 points while the nasdaq fell 47. the number of u.s. homeowners dangerously behind on their mortgage payments fell last month to the lowest level since 2006. according to realty track, foreclosures dipped 2% from april to may and fell 33% from the same time last year, but it doesn't mean the housing market is really recovering. analysts believe a processing delay is the real reason behind the drop. meantime late payments on credit cards have fallen to rates not seen before the recession. defaults are also way down.

banks typically write off credit balances as uncollectible after payments reach 180 days late. citigroup now says 360,000 accounts were affected by last month's cyber attack, that's almost double what citi had said earlier. the bank is under fire for waiting three weeks to notify customers of the breach. now lawmakers are demanding answers. citi says it's taking every action possible to protect its customers. and happy 100th birthday to ibm. big blue as it's known helped launch the computer age, developed the world's first super computer and helped land a man on the moon. at its peak ibm employed over 400,000 people. in recent years ibm successfully reinvented itself switching from hardware to software. in 100 years, betty, wow, incredible. >> a lot of history there, a lot of people affected by the

a professional sport. >> but he did and the fans in boston went into a frenzy, pouring into the streets to celebrate. police say there were several arrests. things got really ugly in vancouver as canucks fans jammed the streets, tossing beer bottles at outdoor tv screens, setting cars on fire and smashing windows. riot police used tear gas, flash grenades to slow the violence there. in baseball, another great game for boston against the rays. red sox pitcher josh beckett was in control allowing just one hit and retiring the last 19 batters he faced. kevin youkilis smashed a three-run homer to give boston a 3-0 victory over tampa bay. in philadelphia, some bottom of the ninth heroics by shane victorino. he smashed a two-run single to tie the game against the marlins. in the tenth, carlos reed hits the game winning rbi.

bin laden's deputy leader, ayman al zawahiri is the new head of the terror group. and congresswoman gabrielle giffords is home this morning. she spent the night in the houston home of her husband, mark kelly after being released from a rehabilitation hospital. it was developed for the u.s. military, a state-of-the-art bionic leg that provides far more stability and strength than standard prosthetics and now is reaching civilian amputees. manuel gallegus has more. >> reporter: joe tucker lost his leg in a motorcycle accident 16 years ago. >> i hit something on the road, construction in the road and my leg got caught through a guardrail and i just severed it. >> reporter: for the past two weeks tucker has been learning to use this state-of-the-art prosthetic leg. the father of four says it's the most normal he's felt since the accident. >> i'm trusting it more on a daily basis. it's very efficient physically and mentally. >> reporter: the 42-year-old is one of a handful of civilians testing the genium bionic leg. now available to the public. it has hydraulics and a complex

the moon in june over moscow. what a sight. last night was the first total lunar eclipse of 2011 and russians had a front row seat as the earth's shadow passed across the moon's face turning it a rich golden red. in health news, recent medical advances have made it possible for many americans to live longer than ever before but for many women in this country, longevity is actually on the decline. this map shows in red where life expectancy for women is getting shorter. it fell in 737 counties. the largest declines were in mississippi and oklahoma. kelly cobiella reports. >> reporter: hamilton county,

florida, is about a two and a half drive from jacksonville but the lifespan for women here is 7 1/2 years, less than women in libya, where the lifespan here is 80. >> i say i need to lose weight, i need to do this and that but i don't ever do it. so. >> reporter: and your daughter? >> same. >> reporter: sue thornberry is 34. she doesn't smoke but loves her fried southern food. >> i'm not active, other than working and home, that's it. i don't exercise much and i don't eat real healthy. >> reporter: hamilton county is one of 00 u.s. counties where the life expectancy for women declined, that's a quarter of the counties in the united states. >> progress for women has been worse for women than men. >> reporter: dr. christopher murry and his team looked for life expectancy for women, found wide disparities for women from county to county, even from state to state. >> for large parts of the u.s., for many, many counties, we are not achieving the improvement in life expectancy that is

medically possible. >> reporter: women in collier county, florida, live the longest, 86 years. the racial makeup there is mostly white, just 12% are below the poverty line. but women in holmes county, mississippi, have one of the shortest life expectancies, 73 1/2 years. holmes is overwhelmingly african-american with 48% below the poverty line. the decline in longevity comes despite significant gains in screening and treatment for women's diseases. researchers blame high rates of obesity, smoking and other unhealthy lifestyle choices for the decline but do not fully understand the reasons behind the disparities from place to place. researchers are hoping the county by county data can be used to tailor public health plans to each community's needs with the goal of adding years to people's lives. kelly koebbe yay la, cbs news, hamilton county, florida. and coming up later on "the early show" the latest on al qaeda's new leader, osama bin laden's former lieutenant
