change in the state of weather for those who have been hot inland. we are going to continue to see temperatures in the mid-90s in our warmest spots today. cloud cover at the coast but a sun break, high of 68 in san francisco today. 70 for oakland. 58 san jose and 95 in concord, 85 in san jose. we'll have a full look at the extended forecast in a bit. but let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> i think one of us is going to have to wear a wig today! [ laughter ] >> san mateo bridge traffic is friday light. we hope it will stay that way. we'll have roadwork in a bit. back to you. >> thank you. two more of the fishermen who survived in the sea of cortez are on the way to san jose right now this morning on a bus. their truck broke down near the

u.s./mexico border so they are riding greyhound home. four our survivors made it home to the bay area yesterday and they gave don knapp an earful about the ship's crew. >> reporter: four survivors returned one week after leaving for a fishing trip to baja. they left no doubt about what they think went wrong. >> the captain was a criminal jack ass. he had no idea what he was doing. the storm comes 25 degrees from the port side. he goes straight down. if he would have turned into the wind then, i was a sailor before at one time, if he would have turned into the wind -- he sunk us, in other words. i didn't see the crew. nobody came around to wake us up, give us a life vest. >> reporter: they share their story of survival against long odds. >> we got through it with just the will to survive. all of us went into the water at the same time.

it was just black. we treaded water until it was light. and just tried to stay afloat. tried to stay alive. >> i have three people to credit for saving my life. one was sean shattuck a person who is still missing. he alerted dave and i that the boat was listing. and so three of us got out of there but i don't know if sean went back to the cabin or what happened to him because the boat was tilted so pad that i just tried to get up on top so i could get somewhere so right when i get up on top i look and there's the whole crew with brand-new life jackets on. and none of the passengers had anything. >> i didn't see pete until we got in the helicopter. so it was 14 or 15 hours before i saw pete. it was the next day before i saw warren. so each little group thought they were the only ones that

survived. so -- >> it just happened so fast within a minute's time. and everybody -- most everybody was still in their cabins and had no life jackets or anything. a lot of the life jackets were up on the upper deck. and so you just dove out into the water hoping you could find an ice chest or anything to hang on to. >> reporter: don knapp, cbs 5. >> two people are dead after a small plane crashed into a hospital in watsonville. that fiery crash happened about 7 pop yesterday evening at an -- 7:00 yesterday evening at an office at watsonville community hospital. the single-engine plane was registered in santa cruz. it went down shortly after take- off from watsonville community airport. both people were killed in the plane but no one on the ground was injured. >> plane crashed, and then everybody started texting everybody on facebook. >> it's scary. everybody is just in shock to kind of just find out this

news. and i don't know what's going to happen after this. >> although the plane burst into flames, no evacuations at the hospital were necessary because that part of the hospital contains administrative offices but no patient rooms. the cause of the crash is still under investigation. it could be an historic day for america's space program. live pictures from kennedy space center in florida. nasa's final space launch of the space shuttle is scheduled for 8257 this morning our time. -- for 8:26 this morning our time. weather could postpone liftoff. there is a 70% chance of rain or thunderstorms at that time. so we'll keep you post the throughout the morning on that. whether it happens this morning or later, it's going to be the 135th and final launch for the shuttle program. joel brown has reaction. reporter: >> they're not working any issues right now. >> reporter: space shuttle atlantis is fueled up and ready

to go. >> countdown has resumed. >> reporter: this morning, nasa moved ahead with its final launch despite a bleak forecast. >> i wish i had better weather for you but we do have a 70% chance of cancerring the launch due to, -- canceling the launch due to weather. >> reporter: lightning strikes caused concern. engineers determined there was no damage. atlantis and four astronaut will haul food and other supplies to the international space station to keep it stocked through 2012. rain or shine, hundreds of thousands will be here, maybe close to a million, for the take-off. patsy cook came from georgia to catch the last glimpse of atlantis roaring into space. she has seen almost all of the apollo missions but this is her first shuttle ground. >> i had to hear the ground quake under me and hear the noise and boom. i'm not going to miss it.

>> reporter: but for some like those though work at kennedy space center, the moment is bittersweet. >> this one is going to be emotional. >> reporter: nasa is closing out its new program to begin a new journey in deep space exploration focused on getting astronauts to an asteroid or even mars. joel brown, cbs news, kennedy space center. 4:37 now. for the tenth time this year, someone has been hit and killed on caltrain tracks. caltrain says a passenger on the tracks was hit near the churchill avenue overcrossing. that's in palo alto at about 8:40 last night. passengers were taken around the scene on buses until the tracks re-opened about 11:00. two men are under arrest for a stabbing at a vta light rail station. two people were stabbed. they are expected to recover. it happened at the civic center station in downtown san jose at around 11:00 last night. the santa clara county sheriff's department is investigating because it does handle all of the crimes on vta

light rail platforms. the president of the texas rangers says the baseball team is deeply saddened that a fan died last night after a fall during a game with the as. in the second inning, the spectator named shannon stone was trying to catch a ball tossed to him. there he goes. it was tossed by a texas outfielder after a foul ball by oakland's conor jackson. stone leaned over and caught it and then fell over that railing onto concrete below. he was taken to the hospital and later died from his injuries. and the hall of fame manager who led oakland to its first two world series championships has died. dick williams managed the as from 1971 to '73 winning the world series in his final two seasons in oakland. williams died yesterday of a ruptured aortic aneurysm in a southern nevada hospital. he played in the major leagues for 13 years before managing the as and five other teams. dick williams was 82. time for a quick check of

traffic and weather. kristy? >> looking good outside today. another warm day in the bay area and you're going to want to play hooky today if you are thinking about it because it will be the last warm day that we have for quite a while. taking a look at satellite, you can see that we are in the clear for the most part inland, a little bit of patchy fog along the coastline and along the bay shores although we should get some sun breaks off the coast a little later on. temperatures outside right now pretty mild. 57 in san rafael. 54 for the city. 57 fremont. a little warmer in livermore and fairfield at 62 an napa sitting at -- and napa sitting at 55. warm temperatures for one more day, maybe even a degree or two warmer in some locations. 96 today in livermore, 70 in oakland, 64 pacifica, 68 san francisco. keeping it warm at santa rosa at 85 degrees. seven-day forecast showing that we are going to be warm today and then cooling into the weekend. significant cooling as you make your way into the workweek. you will see by mid next week

we are going to drop down into the 70s as our highs at that point. so get outside and enjoy the warm weather today. let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you, kristy. and we will start off with a live look at conditions towards the bay bridge toll plaza. things look great. all the approaches are fine. there is some lower deck roadwork out there on eastbound 80 if you are heading towards oakland, various lanes blocked until 6:00 this morning. elsewhere we have a giants game later on this evening. giants take on the mets 7:15 by at&t ballpark may see extra traffic there and along the embarcadero. 880 in oakland top speeds and you can see those headlights making their way fine towards oakland airport past hegenberger and all the way down towards hayward. there is a little bit of roadwork northbound 880 from oak street towards union. elsewhere golden gate bridge traffic nice and light no issues through marin. another foggy day across the

years. no furloughs and 22 laid-off officers will be rehired. the agreement will save the city $65 million despite that, the motorcycle division is eliminated effective tomorrow. we know the name of the man bart officers killed on sunday. 45-year-old charles hill with no known address according to officers. bart says unless the d.a.'s office object, it is planning on releasing surveillance video of the confrontation when the investigation is complete. pg&e is admitting more mistakes in the wake of the deadly gas pipeline explosion in san bruno. according to the "san jose mercury news," the utility has told state regulators that it misclassified several segments of pipelines in california and in some cases those mistakes led to gas pressure being set

higher than federal safety standards allow. the "mercury news" reports that pg&e is now reducing pressure in more than 30 locations statewide and is reviewing other locations. meantime, the san bruno disaster is prompting california to beef up its team of gas pipeline inspectors. the public utilities commission puck is adding five more people to the staff in addition to four in december. america's obesity problem is getting bigger. new relief for th foreclosure crisis. how the obama administration is making it easier for out-of- work americans to stay in their homes. >> do not consider social security a piggy bank to giving tax cuts to the wealthy people in our country. >> what's really on the chopping block when it comes to raising the debt ceiling. >> here in san francisco, we are clear for take-off. beautiful sunny skies today. another warm day in the bay area. going to see some temperatures

his own life. police say an ex-convict... 34- year-old rodrick dantzler... the suspect in a deadly shooting rampage in michigan killed himself. an ex-convict, 34-year-old man killed 7 peopl in grand rapids including two children. earlier he released one hostage and two others are safe. police say danceler had previously served time for federal assault. >> unfortunately at the end of the night the suspect chose to put the gun to him head and fired one shot. >> a manhunt for the suspect

included a high-speed chase through downtown grand rapids. during the chase he was firing randomly out of a car window hit it would go people, who are expected to survive. economists are expecting growth in the economy especially after new data indicated companies are hiring more workers. that news and better-than- expected retail sales figures helped give stocks a boost. the obama administration is making it easier for some out- of-work americans to stay in their homes. on august 1, unemployed homeowners will be able to miss their mortgage payments for a full year before facing foreclosures. that great period is three to four months. the new law is only for those houses that are backed up by the federal government which is is only 14% of mortgages. the republicans and democrats are still far apart

on how to reduce the deficit but more talked are planned. the president met yesterday with eight republican and democratic leaders for about an hour and a half. there is an august 2 deadline for a budget deal to raise the nation's debt ceiling. >> raising taxes is not going to get votes on our side at this point. >> do not consider social security a piggy bank for giving tax cuts to the wealthiest people in our country. >> the president is pushing for a deficit reduction plan that would require spending reductions for medicare and social security. many of his fellow democrats oppose that. if a deal isn't reached, the u.s. could default on its loans for the first time. it's going to be another hot one in the bay area today. plenty of sunshine especially in those inland spots maybe even seeing a few degrees warmer. but as you go out, mild conditions this morning, clear inland and mostly clear at the shore. a little fog at the coast although we should clear out

nicely later on. warm conditions along the bay shores, hot inland hitting the mid-90s. at the coast sun breaks, probably in the 60s by this afternoon. high pressure is keeping warm conditions but big changes are in store. you see this area of low pressure that's going to drop in over the weekend along with that the marine layer deepening and that's going to bring much cooler conditions dropping down into the mid-70s by midweek of your next workweek. let's just think about today those nice warm conditions. 95 today in morgan hill. 85 in santa clara. 82 redwood city. and 84 in union city. over to the east bay we go where we have several mid-90s. 95 in pittsburg and antioch. 71 alameda. 77 hayward, 70 richmond. up in the north bay, cool conditions at stinson beach, 60. 84 san rafael. 92 fairfield. the extended forecast showing that nice warm weather for today. then you see a slight cooldown

that starts this weekend. you will see by the time we hit next workweek we are starting to drop down in temperature only in the low to mid-80s by monday and tuesday dropping down to the mid-70s as a high by wednesday keeping it very cool along those bay shores only in the low 60s at that point and at the coast sitting in the high 50s. that's a look at your weather. elizabeth has traffic. >> thank you. let's go to santa clara. we have word of a major problem. jackknifed big rig blocking three lanes of southbound 101 approaching great america parkway. we are trying to get more details but it sounds like three lanes are blocked southbound. already we are seeing some slowing now past 237. so we are going to be watching this spot right here. again, that's southbound 101 right there around great america parkway exit. a jackknifed big rig blocking three lanes. elsewhere the bay bridge toll plaza, traffic is still light

here. no issues at all on the upper deck right now heading into san francisco. other bridges look good, as well. san mateo bridge westbound 92 about a 13-minute drive out of hayward to foster city at the peninsula. 880 looks okay. i mentioned some roadwork still going on northbound 880 between oak and union. southbound 880 fine into hayward. you may find more roadwork near 880/92. but mass transit is on time. to get the latest traffic up days on that jackknifed big rig that can be a major problem in santa clara or the latest traffic, weather, news updates, once you hit the road, remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 740-am and 106.9-fm. a new report says america is getting fatter. despite recent public health efforts to get people to slim down, obesity rates didn't decline in any state last year. in fact, obesity rates among

u.s. adults increased in san francisco states. according to the trust for america's health and the robert wood johnson foundation, mississippi is the fattest state in the union. colorado is the least obese. well, speaking of food, it is a pepper so hot, it sent one daring food lover to the hospital. in hermosa beach there is a man who took on amigo's taco's special burrito challenge for a $50 prize. he had to eat a burrito featuring the dreaded ghost peppers in 15 minutes. there it is. the restaurant owner warned the challenger to take it slowly. but he ate it in six minutes. >> it's ridiculous. >> i kept telling him, please slow down. he wouldn't slow down. >> he started instantly sweating, couldn't breathe. >> sweating and drooling. gross. after finishing the burrito the man asked nearby police officers to call paramedics.

but they got on a greyhound bus headed here to san jose and that's where we are waiting for them here this morning. two men, lee ikegami and ng who tried to drive back in the truck of their friend leslie yee. he is the one confirmed fatality in this boat accident that occurred off the coast of mexico. on sunday, 27 passengers who were on a fishing vacation off the coast of mexico were tossed into the sea of cortez when their boat capsized in the violent thunderstorm. some of the survivors made it back yesterday. they had scathing complaints about the boat's captain and fault him for much of the accident. >> if he had turned into the wind, he sunk us, in other words. i didn't saw the crew. nobody came around who woke us up or gave us a life vest, nothing. >> we got through it
