a.m. in san francisco. the search for those seven missing northern california men off baja, california is now over. the coast guard finished its air search of more than 7300 square miles in the sea of cortez. the men disappeared after the fishing vessel capsized a week ago sunday. family members say they are not surprised that the search is called off but they still want the united states navy to send divers to that sunken boat. >> we are not going away and we're not giving up, and we will continue to press this request until we actually receive satisfaction. and the ultimate goal is to bring our family members home. >> officials in baja california say small mexican naval california as well as other fishermen will continue searching for the men. this morning, a disturbing look at how a convicted sex offender stalked young girls. prosecutors say the couple, phillip and nancy garrido, did their scouting portfolio and

nervously breathing. the officer leads to the front door while jaycee dugard is being held captive in their backyard. >> i'm doing everything i'm supposed to do. >> i know it. >> it's like oh, wow. how can everybody miss this. how can this be overlooked? how can this go on for so long. >> reporter: toni powell is the mother of six. she worked three doors down from the garridos and was there when news broke of the woman held captive for 18 years in their backyard shed. she doesn't know if she ever wants to read jaycee dugard's memoir that went on sale today. but ever since then she doesn't let her kids out of her sight. >> it makes you leery of people that are around at parks. if i don't see them with any kids my eyes are always on them to find out, what are they here for, what are their intentions? could this be another garrido? ♪ [ music ] >> reporter: in antioch, elizabeth cook, cbs 5. >> last month, a judge sentenced phillip garrido to

life in jail for the kidnapping and raping of jaycee dugard. his wife got 36 years to life. jaycee dugard's memoir is at the top of amazon.com's best- seller list. a fundraiser this evening for two uc-berkeley alumni detained in iran. shane bauer and josh fattal have been in custody since july of 2009. iran accuses them of espionage and entering the country illegally and they face trial july 31st. they contend that they accidentally crossed the border while hiking. bauer's fiancee sarah shourd was allowed back to the u.s. for health reasons. this evening's event will go to the legal costs. the concord city council has unanimously approved a daytime curfew for minors who should be in school. last night's vote was unanimous. students found walk the streets between 8:30 a.m. and 2:30 on school days could be cited and their parents

fined. beginning with $100 for the first offense, that new law is in response to a recent spike in break-ins and a failure of current policies to curb truancy. >> it was bad. kids would leave whenever they wanted to. >> last year was a lot of students, they put up fences around the school so there was a lot of students hopping. >> some critics say the new law could unfairly target the poor and even open the door to racial profiling. it will take effect next month. a victory for former 49ers quarterback joe montana in the santa clara city council chambers. councilmembers last night agreed to give his investment group an exclusive negotiating agreement for some city-owned property near the proposed 49ers stadium. montana and his colleagues want to build a hotel, restaurant and sports bar in the entertainment complex. it's wednesday so it's never too early to see what's ahead for the weekend. >> oh, i'm apprised, already

[ laughter ] >> if you want to go to the beach this weekend, you're going to have to wait until the weekend to see some of that sunshine because certainly we're seeing the same weather pattern, drizzly, cool conditions, you can see here on satellite that that morning clouds are stretching as far as sacramento so we are going to see cloud cover for everybody as you make your way out this morning. temperatures this morning are pretty similar neighborhood by neighborhood. we are seeing a few degrees warmer in some locations than where we were yesterday. 57 san rafael and napa, 58 livermore and fairfield, 61 in san jose. now, our afternoon highs going to look similar to yesterday. 73 is the high in fairfield, 70 for livermore, san francisco topping out at 60. 68 for redwood city and 72 for san jose. and we'll have a full look at exactly when that warm weather is going to come into the bay area in just a bit. let's go to gianna with a look at traffic. >> thank you. we start off with the peninsula where we are getting reports of fog there. so limited visibility along highway 1, 101 as well as 280.

thousands of cloned atm cards. now, officers say the operation appears to be extensive and the victims could be from anywhere. >> they did appear to be organized. and the investigation will continue into where the cards came from and others who might involved. >> the two men are held without bail and put on an immigration hold. police believe that they are both from armenia. let's check some bay area headlines. in an attempt to save cash and balance public safety needs, the city of pittsburg has reached a tentative deal with its police department. this comes as officers investigate a string of shootings along the delta de anza trail. the deal calls for cuts in police pensions and healthcare contributions. plus officers agreed to a wage freeze. the city council will take it up next week. and it looks like lieutenant governor gavin newsom is on the verge of selling his house in san francisco. it went on the market for $2.75

million. less than a week ago. now real estate websites say that a purchase is already pending. it's only $12,000 more than he paid 2 years ago. he and his family already moved to marin county. cal state students will pay more for education as a new cal state president gets a huge pay raise. yesterday, trustees approved a 12 tuition hike this fall. they also voted to give the new president of san diego state a $100,000 pay raise. cal state students say they are disappointed with the trustees. >> just two years ago the fees were half as much as they are now. >> i think it's horrible because it's like we're trying to get an education and then all they're trying to do is make us pay more money. >> governor brown criticized the salary raise while asking students to pay more. csu defends the raise saying the university needs to offer competitive salaries.

fading fast. joel brown with new proposals lawmakers are talking about in lieu of a compromise. reporter: president obama is raising the stakes in the battle over the debt limit. >> i cannot guarantee that those checks go out on august 3 if we haven't resolved this issue. >> reporter: tuesday, he told cbs news anchor scott pelley that tens of billions of dollars in social security, veterans and disability checks could be in jeopardy if lawmakers don't raise the debt limit by august 2. >> the way it's going to get resolved is if all of us make some compromises and we take a balanced approach that finally deals with this debt and deficit in a serious way. >> reporter: both sides will meet again this afternoon. but if the senate's top republican is any indication, a long-term fix may be unlikely. >> i have little question that as long as this president is in the oval office, a real solution is probably unattainable. >> reporter: with a default deadline less than three weeks away now, the senate minority leader is proposing a backup

plan one that would give the president the power to raise the debt limit on his own. >> default is not an option. >> reporter: under the plan, president obama could raise the debt ceiling three times before 2013 if he agrees to matching spending cuts. aides to the president say he hasn't rejected the idea, but prefers his own $4 trillion deficit reduction plan. >> the president talks a good game. but when it comes time to actually putting the issues on the table, making decisions, he can't quite pull the trigger. >> reporter: the white house insists lawmakers must make a deal by next week if there is any hope of passing it in time. joel brown, cbs news, washington. meanwhile, europe's debt crisis appears to be deepening. moody's is downgrading ireland's debt to junk status making it more difficult for that struggling country to borrow money. greece is still waiting for european banks to sign off on its rescue package. and u.s. investors are still worried that italy may be the

next country in need of financial help. opening statements are expected today in washington in the trial of former baseball star roger clemens. the seven-time cy young award winner is accused of lying to congress. the prosecutors say clemens lied under oath three years ago when he denied using performance-enhancing drugs. if convicted he could face time in prison. the remains of former first lady betty ford will be flown to michigan today where she will be buried alongside her late husband, president gerald ford. ♪ [ music ] >> yesterday in riverside county, former first lady rosalynn carter was among the speakers at mrs. ford's funeral. all the living first ladies past and present were at the palm desert ceremony. another service will be held tomorrow in grand rapids, michigan. betty ford was 93 when she died on friday. definitely a little bit

overcast and cool as you step outside this morning. this will handling on for the next several days. cloudy start inland, low clouds around the bay and we are seeing drizzle along the bay shores and at the coast today. temperatures sitting in the 50s for the most part. by this afternoon, we are going to get some relief inland, a little bit of sunshine there, partial clearing along the bay, and then the coast will continue to see that drizzle. we are going to keep it cool and see breezy conditions. satellite here showing us that cloud cover is stretching far inland today as far as the sacramento valley so all parts of the bay area waking up to gray skies. this low that's been hanging around all season long bringing us above average snowfall and rainfall totals, we are seeing this low pass us right now bringing us cool temperatures and bringing us breezy conditions. so definitely need the coat today, not necessarily the umbrella but you may see a little drizzle. highs today once we warm up will be 69 in los altos, 71

sunnyvale and cupertino, 74 milpitas, 66 union, daly city 54, 56 pacifica. over in the east bay, topping out at 76 in brentwood, 75 in antioch, cooler in danville at 69. also 69 in dublin today. alameda topping out at 60. and 60 also as a high today in richmond. up to the north bay we go, the city is topping out at 60 today, also 64 sausalito. 70 san anselmo, 73 for santa rosa and 73 fairfield, 69 benicia. this cooling trend continues for several days. this weekend a gradual warming as the high builds back n for the beginning of next workweek we'll get those temperatures much closer to where we should be for this time of year so by tuesday, you can see bumping temperatures up in the warmest locations to the high 80s. that's the a look at your forecast. over to gianna with a look at traffic. >> we have a new accident to report in pacifica.

highway 1 southbound right at devil's slide reported by chp. we'll get more word as it comes in. probably lanes blocked because it's a two-lane highway. foggy on highway 1 through the peninsula as well as 280 and 101 so use caution either way. not too bad south 101 headed into the south bay. roadwork to contend with, eastbound skyway from fourth street to the lower deck of the bay bridge. we are dealing are various lanes closed, hoping to wrap up at 6:00. bay bridge out of oakland not bad. metering lights off, clear across the upper deck into san francisco. no wind advisories this morning. here's live look at the golden gate bridge. so far, so good out of marin county. the rest of our bay area bridges checking in problem- free including the san mateo bridge. we have some roadwork along 880 connecting over to 92. they should have that wrapped up within the next few minutes especially that 92 connector. you can access the bridge. right now, not too bad across the san mateo bridge. our camera is a little blurry

may behave differently in men. stem cell therapy could one day be useful for brain cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment. radiation has devastating side effects but a study in cancer research finds stem cells can help. when cells were transplanted into the brains of rats cognitive function improved. here's a warning for pregnant women: don't try to stay too slim during your pregnancy. some gynecologists warn that a lot of women are so obsessed with staying thin that it is a problem for the babies they are carrying. that causes premature delivery as well as pre-term labor. >> both of those problems can be very serious, can cause serious birth defects for the baby and problems with mom. >> experts say women who are underweight should gain between 28 and 40 pounds during pregnancy. those with normal weight 25 to 35 pounds. overweight or obese women
