beautiful day similar to yesterday, maybe a little cooler. still warming up into the 90s inland. i'll tell you how warm we'll be in our warmest spots in just a bit but gianna has traffic. >> thank you. good morning. well, we are starting off with roadwork this morning on the pay bridge. in fact, it's going to show you down in both directions. details in just minutes. back to you. >> thank you. it was the perfect way to end nasa's space shuttle program. a smooth landing for atlantis about an hour and a half ago at cape canaveral, florida. >> atlantis is home, its journey complete, a moment in history to be remembered. >> the international space station was built and 200 satellites were carried into orbit in the 30-year history of the shuttle program. there were 14 astronauts who died in the challenger and

columbia disasters of 1986 and 2003. as for the remaining shuttles, they will become museum pieces. endeavour will be on display in the california science center. atlantis will be on display next year in florida at the kennedy space center visitor center. >> the projection is that it will draw more people year round than the shuttles ever did. >> starting tomorrow, about 2,000 workers at kennedy are expected to be laid off. there is no replacement for the shuttle program. the u.s. will instead rely on russia and private companies. we have live pictures to show from you kennedy space center. the crew is holding a post landing news conference. we'll check into that and have a live report on his historic landing coming up at 5 a.m. here at home, san francisco's police chief is turning to plan b. a shouting match cut short his town hall

meeting last night over a deadly police shooting in the bayview. anne makovec is at the police station this morning. i guess things got heated. >> reporter: certainly. now, the police chief says there will be more meetings to come but none are scheduled just yet. it was a rough night for the police last night. take a look at this scene. this is the police chief getting shouted down. [ screaming ] >> reporter: chief greg suhr left not long after that. he did try several times to answer people's questions but a lot of people were mainly there to vent. [ screaming ] >> people are upset. an act of violence happened in their town square. but we were doing our best to make sure mr. harding didn't do any violence to the community. >> the meeting was held in

response to a police shooting you just heard suhr referring to. it happened as officers approached a 19-year-old for fare evasion. he took off. police say he was shooting at him as they ran. they shot him and he died. his name is kenneth harding a parolee from seattle wanted for questioning in a shooting death out there. people say it wasn't about him, they say it was more about years of bad relations with the community. people say they are upset. they say police shot to kill in this circumstance that they let him bleed to death and it happened in front of children. >> do you know how long the meeting lasted ? does anyone feel like anything was accomplished? > >> reporter: now, people got some of their complaints off of their shoulders. but obviously the police chief is only there for about an hour. so a lot of it, you know, they felt like they were talking to each other. there was a city council member there and we're going to hear from her in the next half hour.

>> anne makovec live for us this morning in san francisco, thank you. no everyone at the meeting came from the bayview and 43 people were arrested on the night of the protest. most of them were not from the bayview. only 17 were from san francisco. just one was from the bayview. richmond police are searching for a killer after another young man is gunned down in the streets. 20-year-old darrell russell was shot to death near the nevin community center shortly before noon yesterday. police say someone got out of a car and shot russell at close range. the victim's grandmother lost another grandson in a shooting two years ago. >> i'm just tired. this is the second grandchild

i'm going to bury in two years. >> police say they have no motive for yesterday's killing but they are looking at possible connections to a double murder in the same area sunday night that may be gang- related. the fbi is searching for an 85-year-old woman believed kidnapped by one of her sons who has ties to the bay area. investigators believe doris goldberg was taken from her home in ashland, oregon, on may 24. she has alzheimer's disease and had been living with another son. the suspect in this case is 55- year-old marshall goldberg. he has connections to daly city and the fbi believes he may be here in the bay area. goldberg also has ties to southern california. he used to work odd jobs in the film industry in north hollywood. he was last known to be driving a 1996 gold oldsmobile four- door sedan, california plates 3szy023. and one of the three people who went over a 317-foot waterfall in yosemite was a

university of san francisco student. all three with a church group from the san joaquin valley on a day trip to the national park. witnesses say the three had crossed a metal guardrail to take pictures in the swollen river above vernal fall. a woman fell into the water and then a man and another woman slipped in trying to save her. their bodies have not yet been recovered. there is a new man in charge of transportation in san francisco. the "chronicle" newspaper says ed reese skin will be named today as executive director of the municipal transportation agency. he has been san francisco's public works director since 2008. san francisco mayor ed lee seems to be backing off from his pledge that he will not run for a full term this fall. the "chronicle" reports for the first time lee is not ruling it out. if lee does get into the race, polls show he would become an instant front-runner. this morning president obama is changing his tune.

he now says he could support a short-term debt deal to prevent the u.s. from going into default. but the president says he would only back a stop-gap measure if a larger agreement was essentially in place. he had previously said he would not support a short-term plan. he is hoping the bipartisan "gang of six" plan can gain enough support in the house and senate to pass. >> let's actually take this moment and see if we can rally around something that could actually move forward. >> if we can help in the debt ceiling debate by producing this product, fine. >> lawmakers must raise the debt limit by august 2 or the u.s. will default on its bills for the first time. >> let's check traffic, first to weather. >> a little more cloud cover this morning than yesterday at this time. marine layer back in the picture, still shallow but bringing some of the clouds and some of the fog. temperatures outside right now pretty mild though.

bill that makes it easier for employers to pay for part of the bill. transportation experts say it will draw more people out of their cars. >> it will help the employees by getting them off the road to work more rested sped of having to fight the traffic santa barbara instead of having to fight the graphic and $4-gallon gas. >> california's chamber of commerce spoke out against the bill. small business owners says it costs them. the costs will be tax- deductible for businesses. the bill is on the governor's desk. new numbers from the state show that last year was the safest year on california roads since the 1940s. 1944 to be specific. the number of traffic deaths dropped last year for the fifth straight year to about 2700. that's a 37% drop since 2005. researchers say traffic safety campaigns and drunk driving crackdowns played major roles.

ucsf is putting seatbelts in its shuttle buses in response to last week's crash. the university hopes to have the fleet outfitted by the end of next month. state lawmakers are also looking into why shuttle buses are exempt from laws that require seatbelts. wall street will get the report on new jobless claims this morning. then investors will be watching on capitol hill. fed chairman ben bernanke will testify before the senate banking committee. he will explain how regulators are -- what regulators are doing on putting new financial rules into place. a new federal law calls for 243 new rules. if you held a mortgage with countrywide, you may get some money back. thousands of borrowers were overcharged by countrywide when they defaulted or fell behind on their mortgages. the money is part of a settlement reached last year with the federal trade

the transportation security administration plans to instal re on scanning soon, no more naked images at airports. the transportation security administration plans to install new software on scanning machines. now, that will allow security workers to spot possible threats on passengers without having to view images of naked bodies. this comes after complaints that the current full-body scanners invade privacy. the upgrade will be installed at airports nationwide in the next couple of months. the price tag for another new terminal at sfo just went up. according to "the examiner," planners want the new terminal 3 to meet the same standards as the new terminal 2. it will feature an 18,000-square-foot

expansion, more seating and additional retail space. the price estimate has jumped from $24 million to $104 million. the airport commission is currently soliciting new bids for a contract. no public money will be used. there are some signs of hope now that the national football league will start its season on time. representatives of players and team owners are working on a final labor agreement that's expected to be ready for a vote today. the players reportedly passed a vote today saying some terms still need to be worked out. the owners locked out the players months ago preventing any formal practices, although many players have organized unofficial workouts. part of the complex agreement would set aside money for the 49ers to build their new stadium in santa clara. the "san jose mercury news" says the league could kick in up to $140 million. still, the team needs to secure a lot more financing for the project, which will cost an estimated $987 million.

meanwhile, oakland official unveiled a plan yesterday to build a new stadium for the raiders. there's also been some very informal talk of a possible joint stadium to be shared by the two teams. it's a victory for native americans protecting burial grounds. the tribes reached an easement settlement with the vallejo recreation district to protect glen cove. it eliminates the planned restroom facility and relocates the planned parking lot to an area with no cultural remnants. the tribes have been camped out for 98 days trying to block the planned development. yesterday may haven't warmest day of our workweek but no reason to get upset. it's going to be gorgeous today with plenty of sunshine. pretty mild as you step outside the door this morning. temperatures in the 50s and the 60s. mostly clear start in those inland locations. around the bay a little cloud cover. at the coast, of course, low clouds and fog. more clouds than we saw yesterday morning. by this afternoon, warming up

are wrapping it up early, no delays. southbound 17 to ramp at highway 9 roadwork in effect until noon. so that ramp will be closed so use an alternate until noon. we are seeing slight delays on the southbound side of 17. east bay good. westbound 8no delays from the carquinez bridge to the maze. altamont pass clear. from you taking 880 through oakland, free-flowing. bay bridge roadwork in effect upper and lower decks. looks like they will wrap things up in 15 minutes. that's a look at traffic. back to you. >> thank you, gianna. a ballot measure aimed at banning male circumcision in san francisco is getting attention at the state and federal levels. this afternoon, two state assembly members will have a news conference in san francisco to talk about their bill to prevent local jurisdictions from banning circumcision. a southern california congressman has introduced a similar bill in washington. one of the nation's biggest women's healthcare groups is changing its position now on breast cancer screening.

the american college of obstetricians and gynecologists is now telling women to start getting those annual mammograms when they turn 40 rather than 50. that is different from the latest guidelines from a government task force. instead they say women 50 and older should get screenings every other year instead of annually. it's 4:54. it turns out that hacking into voicemail in the u.s. is pretty easy depending on your phone carrier. cybercrime experts say hacking is hard to trace but easy to pull off, especially with at&t and sprint. unlike other providers, they don't require individual p.i.n. numbers to access voicemail. hackers just go to any of a number of websites, punch in the phone number and the number of the phone they want to hack, and then press go. >> they weighed the pros and cons and decided usability outweighs security. >> sprint and at&t both say that they take security very seriously but they strongly urge customers to set up those
