your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. a fight is on a flight between two passengers and the pilot that attacked on a plane that landed at sfo this morning. alex trebek leaves the bay area and how the jeopardy host became a crime victim and tried to take matters into his own hands. good morning, it's thursday, july 28. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. >> time now is 4:30. and we begin this morning with some breaking news right now. a lockdown has just been lifted in an east bay neighborhood. police have just cleared the scene in newark. we had heard that s.w.a.t. was on scene at blackburn drive in the lake district. residents say they were told to

stay indoors and that one person may be barricaded inside a home there. just hours earlier newark officers tried to pull over a car that was registered to an east palo alto murder suspect. the car led officers on a high- speed chase that ended in lathrop. right now it's unclear in the lockdown was connected to the -- if the lockdown was connected to the police chase. a fight delays a flight from florida to san francisco. anne makovec is at sfo where that plane finally landed early this morning. but there were some delays. >> reporter: yes. it was certainly a rough trip for passengers. the plane was supposed to land from miami here at sfo last night at 11:45 and didn't land until almost 2 p.m. because of the delay according to the passengers caused by a fight between passengers and the pilot. this all went on on the ground in miami according to passengers. there were a couple of unruly guys in the exit row. they were being asked to exit the plane. they even turned the plane

around on the runway to get these guys off of the plane. the pilot came and was telling them to get off the plane. and that is when the fight broke out. >> they were escorted of course both the guy, and they got in a verbal conversation and argument in spanish. and then they walked out and they were escorted out the door of the plane and they were stand there is arguing with the captain. they didn't want to get off the plane. and then one of the guys punched the captain right in the eye right here on his face and then that's when the captain backed up and all the other guys from the airplane started getting in on it. >> eventually the guys were taken off of the plane in miami and the plane finally did get off of the ground. you're looking at some pictures right now taken by another one of the passengers on that plane as the scuffle ensued and even got a picture of one of the guys being handcuffed and taken away. some of the passengers we spoke

to also say they don't know how these guys got on the plane because they say that they saw them act unruly before they even board the plane. so they are wondering why they were allowed to have gotten that far. you also mentioned that passenger saying that the other passengers were speaking spanish. there seemed to be also seem to be a language barrier between the pilot and the passengers. we haven't heard anything from american airlines yet this morning. of course, we have had calls in to them as well as the managers at the miami airport and here at sfo. bottom line is everything ended well for the passengers but it certainly was a little rough. grace. >> anne, any indication that people may have been drinking before they got on the flight? >> reporter: you know, of course, tough to prove at this point especially with that language barrier that i mentioned. but that has been a theory that has gone around with some of the passengers. >> all right. anne makovec at sfo, thank you. >> usually the case. okay. it is 4373 now. on capitol hill the house today expected to vote again on

another debt ceiling plan the latest version backed by the republican house speaker john boehner. his renewed version. it was reworked after the congressional budget office determined the original would not cut as much spending as promised. some tea party-backed republicans in the house plan to oppose it saying it still doesn't reduce spending enough for them. all 53 members of the senate democratic caucus signed a letter to boehner saying they oppose it. now, if the plan is not locked in by tuesday's deadline, the u.s. may default on its debt for the first time in history. that likelihood is already affecting the stock market as you can see. the dow jones industrial average fell 198 points or about 2% yesterday. the nasdaq lost 75 points. jeopardy host alex trebek will have surgery at the end of the week avenue hurt his leg trying to run after a burglar in his san francisco hotel.

he was in town it at google. his wife woke up early tuesday morning and saw a woman grabbing cash and valuables out of their hotel room. the woman fled and trebek ran after her. during the chase he ruptured his achilles tendon and is now recovering at his los angeles home. >> everything is okay. thanks. >> did you get a bracelet back? >> no. >> he is talking about a bracelet that he has worn on jeopardy for the last two decades. hotel security ultimately stopped woman lucinda myers. she is now awaiting arraignment. a parolee once accused of the bryan stow beating is trying to get out of jail. lawyers for giovanni ramirez asked a judge to let him go. the times reports the attorney accused police chief charles beck of rushing to judgment when he announced ramirez was the person who attacked stow about a month ago after two other suspects were arrested last week. beck said ramirez wasn't involved. walnut creek arrested a man

suspected of stealing a car that contained baseball memorabilia and a lot of it. they were linked to former san francisco giants slugger the hall of famer willie mccoverville. the car was found yesterday and a transient was arrested. this is surveillance video outside mcdonald's in walnut creek. you see the suspect there. much of the memorabilia was recovered. but not all of it. two suspects are in police custody this after a high-speed chase. they are not murder suspects though as police first thought. the pursuit started in fremont yesterday when the driver refused to pull over. two men sped along 880 and 580 and ended up over the altamont pass at times going 70 miles per hour. they were busted in the lathrop- manteca area after the highway patrol put down spike strips. the police say they are not murder suspects as we mentioned but the car they were in was registered to one. a man who delivers food to

the homeless is on life support after being shot in oakland. brother john had just handed a meal to a homeless man last night when he was shot. his wife was grazed by a bullet. in fairfield, the air quality is now back to normal levels after tuesday's plastics plant fire. solano county's environmental health office is testing air samples but officials say the type of plastic that burned was no worse for the environment than a wildfire. they are also checking to see if there was any water contamination. 4:37 now. two men and a teenager jump into action when seeing their neighbor's house on fire. they spotted smoke coming from the house in martinez tuesday afternoon. after hearing some screams from the house for help and finding the front door that was locked, they threw a rock through a window get inside. they finally rescued the man inside the house. >> i went inside and i got all dizzy and stuff and said, forget it i had to bail out.

then i cut my hands and stuff. and then we just started back at it. >> i'm going to go straight in one more time. and i went straight in and he was right there. i just grabbed his foot and dragged him out. >> i didn't do this to be a hero. i did this to save a neighbor's life. >> the home owner is in stable condition thanks to those gentlemen. he is in the hospital still. firefighters think he fell asleep while smoking and the cigarette likely sparked the fire. >> nice neighbors. 4:38. you know, you drive in it's so early in the morning you think, is this my eyes or is that fog coming in? >> i'll tell you what, lawrence you can't even see the bay bridge from our vantage point. hardly. some of the lights are faint but it isn't there. >> it is thick. it is compressed right down to the surface this morning and it's a sign we'll see more sunshine today as that fog will break up just a thin layer but it is thick at the surface so watch out especially at the coast if you are traveling anywhere for today. numbers outside right now you're looking at 50s and low

60s in places like san jose and also into livermore. by the afternoon, the heat is starting to get cranked up. 59 in fairfield today. 49 in livermore -- 94 in fairfield, 94 in livermore. next couple of days we are going to heat up more so, so some hot weather showing up in the valleys. at the coast, starting out with patchy, dense fog giving way to sunshine and a couple of clouds. think we are look at nice weather through the weekend probably going to cool off toward the beginning of next week. how about that, elizabeth? >> it looks good. kind of mild this morning, right? >> yeah, not bad. >> it feels a little warm in here. right? a little muggy? oh, that's jus me, hot flashes. through the alum rock exit looks great. let's go to the maps with more life traffic cameras. this is the fog that we have been talking about. this is the golden gate bridge a little difficult to tell this morning but yeah, things look okay this morning across the span, visibilities arena all. you will notice a slower drive time through novato because of ongoing roadwork. they have three lanes blocked off in the southbound direction of 101 as you make your way past 37 to north san pedro road. should wrap up shortly. more roadwork on more bridges. this is the dumbarton bridge eastbound 84 as you approach the high-rise we have various lanes blocked. that should be wrapping up shortly, as well. but if you want to use the san mateo bridge, hey, there's no roadwork there. and things look great really across the span. looks like visibility pretty good as well in the commute direction. this is westbound 92 traffic still very light about a 13- minute drive out of hayward toward foster city. we'll bring you more traffic updates throughout the morning. in the meantime,. >> thank you. 4:40 now. coming up, how a bay area

justic he posted this online. it's a san francisco business owner is turning to youtube for justice. he posted this online. it's surveillance video of a man the owner says is breaking into a go car shop near fisherman's wharf early friday morning. now, the alleged thief spent about 20 minutes getting inside stealing electric scooter and then returning for the charger. forgot that. but the shop's owner says he has a great response to his video. >> we have had calls from business owners on pier 39 who

think they may have seen the same guy from aquatic park so the whole community is keeping their eyes out. >> big brother is always watching. there's the guy. the owner says the scooter and the charger are worth about $2,000. so far, no arrests. but hopefully they will find that guy. >> hopefully . a local animal shelter is in danger of closing unless they can raise a lot of money in a few weeks. the valley humane society in pleasanton announced yesterday it is in desperate need of $125,000 in donations in the next 30 days. the organization says it's all about the economy. donations have dropped sharply while the cost of food and supplies has increased. so far, the response from donors is providing hope. >> i can't afford it, but it's something you have to do. >> it was only last month that the valley humane society moved into its new building on nevada street. that was paid for by a $1.3 million donation that was willed by a woman who died in

year. that's a result of all the uncertainty on the debt ceiling..... e's a chance t the dow is headed for the worst weekly drop in a year as a result of all the uncertainty on the debt ceiling. there is a chance the u.s. will default on its loans for the first time in history. another major concern, credit card balances. experts say expect higher interest rates if congress fails to reach a deal and doesn't raise that debt limit. >> the u.s. defaults on this debt, it's highly likely that the consumer who has a credit card with a variable rate is going to see their interest rate go up between one and five

percent. >> here's what it means in dollar amounts. take a $10,000 balance. at 15% interest with minimum payments it would cost more than $25,000 to pay it off but if that rate rises to 20%, a new $10,000 balance would cost more than $45,000. >> don't use your credit cards. that's the story there, huh? 4:49. california is bucking the trend on foreclosures. that's not a good thing, either. while most of the nation's metro areas are seeing a drop, our state has seven of the top 10 areas with the largest percentage of homes in foreclosures. modesto is number three in the nation with 3.3%. that's one out of 30 homes there. stockton is number 4 with just slightly less. the vallejo-fairfield area comes in at number 6 with 3.1% of homes in foreclosure there. sacramento-rolesville area came in tenth. shark experts are asking for especially in fighting the second largest fish in the world. it is the basking shark and

they can grow more than 30 feet long. look at that guy. >> wow. >> they are getting harder to find despite their size. so shark scientists are distributing flyers here asking people to keep an eye out for them along the coast. that's where they feed on plankton. >> look that the mouth. >> and they often come to the surface of the water. >> get a lot of plankton with that mouth. >> when they open their mouth you see the huge amount of white. another thing is the gills on the basking shark extend way up on their head almost circular. >> scientist have tagged three basking sharks on the pacific coast and they are searching for the sharks along the coast from canada to mexico. >> can you imagine seeing a mouth like that coming at you in the watered? that would be scary. out the door, we have dense fog to begin with especially at the coast. it's very thick this morning along 280 and highway 1 so watch out for that. clouds continuing into the bay,

some clouds also making their way into the north bay. by the afternoon we're cranking up the heat. some 80s and mid-90s by the afternoon inside the bay 60s and 70s. 80s at the santa clara valley. at the coastline, you're looking at 60s, partly cloudy, a logical sunshine out there, too. so more seasonal weather around the bay area. really this is just getting back to normal. high pressure building in. going to bring mostly sunny skies, a couple of patches of fog at the coast. we are breaking out the triple digits into the central valley today. 102 in fresno, 100 degrees in sacramento, 104 in redding, 91 in yosemite, 83 in lake tahoe. by the way, if you plan to head up to the high country the next couple of days, we are expecting some thunderstorms to become more common especially on the weekend. around the bay area, we are looking at plenty of sunshine toward the afternoon. 95 degrees in morgan hill. that will be one of the hotter spots. 89 los gatos. 81 in mountain view. at the coast, a little more

sunshine. about 6 7 in half moon bay. 64 pacifica, 60 degrees, partly cloudy skies into daly city. our friends in oakland going to see about 72 by the afternoon with mostly sunny skies. 71 in berkeley. but as you make your way into the tri-valley that quickly warms up and you're look at numbers up into the 90s as high as 94 in livermore, 95 brentwood and antioch. the north bay seeing plenty of sunshine in the afternoon hours after just a couple of patches of fog. still, you're looking at 86 in napa valley, 84 and sunny in santa rosa and 83 in san anselmo. hot the next few days especially inland into the 90s. we'll cool down maybe slightly over the weekend, more cooling expected though as we head into the beginning of next week. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. let's go to our maps and show you what's going on out there on the roads. mass transit we'll start with

that. so far everything is on time right now so off to a great start for bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain. everything on time no delay there. and like i said, to our roads, 880/237 we have a camera there and traffic here coming around the bend the silicon valley commute looks great no delays through there. and same thing in the south bay. we have a photographer standing by live showing us 101 traffic near alum rock. you can see all green on our sensors and heading out of downtown san jose 280 traffic nice and light there, as well. it's hard to see the headlights but you can make them out and traffic is moving along okay approaching the 880 interchange. if you are continuing to drive along the peninsula, 101 and 280 both in the clear. and we just got off the phone wit caltrans. no longer any delay around 92 with construction. taillights moving westbound 13, 14 minutes from hayward to

foster city. once again the golden gate bridge, there is fog so may reduced visibility across some stretches. you can see those headlights making their way into san francisco. and still a little slug, through novato because they are doing some roadwork. they have various lanes blocked for another 10 minutes or so southbound. remember kcbs, our radio partners, at 740-am and 106.9- fm. that's your traffic and weather. back to you. a new study may reassure some parents about their children's use of cell phones. researchers in switzerland found children who use them on a regular basis are not more susceptible to brain cancer. they are not more likely to have been regular cell phone users but the study only looked at childhood brain tumors and not long-term risk. >> the question, the child that begins using the cell phone at

7 or age 12, when they're 47, their risk higher? >> if you are concerned about the risk of cancer, text instead of making calls or use an earpiece or the phone at home if you have one of those still. >> not a lot of those around anymore. it is world hepatitis day and a new report shows that for the first time drug abusers are often affected. it says worldwide about 10 million have hepatitis "c" while 1.3 million have hepatitis "b." that disease kills about a million people every year. a possible solution to that age-old problem of getting your kids to eat their vegetables. what do you do? researchers at penn state university found children got more veggies when parents pureed them and snuck them into the meals. they ate twice as many every day and took about 11% fewer calories. >> juicy.
