tainted turkey, stores nationwide scramble to remove 18,000 tons of ground turkey linked to a deadly salmonella outbreak. turning 50, president obama begins celebrating the big 5-0 by raising big bucks for his re-election campaign. and gambling investigation. major league baseball summons yankee star alex rodriguez for a little chat about high stakes poker. captioning funded by cbs >> and good morning, everyone. good to see you. i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen. we begin this morning with one of the biggest food recalls ever, 36 million pounds of ground turkey that might be contaminated with salmonella.

at least one person has died, dozens more have been sickened by eating the tainted turkey sold under various labels. jay dow is in washington with more. jay, good morning to you. >> good morning to you, terrell. cargill is one of the nation's biggest meat processors and says it first began looking into possible salmonella contamination at one of its plants five months ago. that internal investigation led to what's being called as you said one of the largest meat recalls ever. grocery stores nationwide are pulling millions of pounds of possibly tainted ground turkey off store shelves. food giant cargill recalled the meat after it was linked to a salmonella outbreak that has so far killed one person in california and sickened at least 76 others in 26 states. >> a pretty scary thought. >> reporter: the recall affects 36 billion pounds of fresh and frozen turkey products dated from february 20th to august 2nd, each package contains code

est p-963. the meat was sold under several different brand names, including honeysuckle white, shady brook farms, safeway and kroger. the turkey has been linked to a strain of salmonella resistant to many common antibiotics. the centers for disease control say nearly 40% of the people who got sick ended up in the hospital. cargill has suspended production at its plant in springdale, arkansas, until it can determine the source of the outbreak. >> they should know where it's coming from. >> reporter: in a statement the company apologized to its customers saying "we go to great lengths to ensure the food we produce is safe and we fully understand that people expect to be able to consume safe food, each serving, every time." cargill urges anyone who purchased the recall product to return it to the store for a refund. cdc officials say the turkey

is safe to eat if it is cooked to 365 degrees, and it is important to wash your hands with soap for at least 20 seconds before and after handling the meat. terrell? >> good to know. jay dow in washington for us this morning, thank you so much. president obama turns 50 today, fresh off that bruising and frustrating battle over the debt ceiling. mr. obama was in chicago last night for a big money campaign fund-raiser. ♪ happy birthday to you >> reporter: jennifer hudson sang to the president who made light of his milestone birthday. >> by the time i wake up i'll have an e-mail from aarp asking me to call president obama and tell him to protect medicare. >> reporter: as he worked to raise funds for his re-election the president was talking economy, urging supporters not to be discouraged by the just completed budget battle. earlier at a cabinet meeting, the president said his administration would redouble

its efforts to create jobs and raise wages. >> how are we going to get people back to work, raise wages and recover fully and families and communities from the worst recession we've had since the great depression. >> later this month he's going on a tour of the midwest. later today a white house birthday party and later tonight mr. obama will celebrate his birthday with family and friends. in other news this morning, an international child pornography ring has been busted. 72 people were arrested yesterday all around the world, 43 here in the u.s., the largest prosecution of an online child porn ring. investigators say some 600 people use dreamboard, specialized in graphic and often violent images of children. >> some of the children featured in these images and videos were just infants, and in many cases the children being victimized were in obvious and also intentional pain.

>> dreamboard has been shut down and more arrests are expected. president obama is urging congress to end the partial shutdown of the federal aviation administration, going on for almost two weeks now. if congress doesn't fix the problem by september the agency could lose up to $1 billion in revenue. nancy cordes reports. >> come back, congress. >> reporter: transportation secretary ray lahood begged as the partial shutdown of faa moved into its 12th day. >> i'm calling them back. come back to washington. leave your vacations, just for a couple hours. >> reporter: the stalemate over funding the faa has idled more than 200 airport construction projects putting at least 70,000 contract workers out of a job. >> this is a lose, lose, lose situation that can be easily solved if congress gets back into town and does its job. >> reporter: an additional 4,000 faa employees have been furloughed including boston engineer mike mcdonald.

>> there's a mortgage payment due, there's student loans that are due, there's a car payments that are due. there are groceries to be bought. >> reporter: the main sticking point is workers' rights. house employees want to make it harder, democrats don't. republicans are trying to trim subsidies for rural airport services, democrats don't. >> i call upon speaker boehner to end this. >> reporter: democrats held one last irate press conference before leaving town. >> i hope the american people wake up. this is their modus operandi, government by crisis they make up, government by hostage taking. >> reporter: in oakland, california, construction of a new $31 million air traffic control tower has been put on hold, and so have the jobs of 60 workers, including electrician ashley davidson. >> i don't know if i can make my rent, i don't know if i can make my car insurance. >> reporter: republicans say this can be settled if democrats just accept their bill but democrats who feel like they

caved during the debt battle are determined to stand their ground and both the house and senate are gone until september, nancy cordes, cbs news, capitol hill. tropical storm emily is threatening haiti and the dominican republic. the storm is bringing heavy rain and 50-mile-per-hour winds as it heads for landfall. in haiti, aid workers are scrambling to help the more than 600,000 people still living without shelter after last year's earthquake. emily is expected to continue toward cuba and by saturday may bring rain to florida. "cbs moneywatch" time now on this purse. u.s. stocks make a rebound. ashley morrison in new york good morning to you. >> good morning to you terrell. a mixed day for asian stocks. japan's nikkei was up 0.2% and hong kong's hang seng's lost about 0.5%. a late day rebound on wall street, the dow wiped out a triple-digit loss to finish 30 points higher and the nasdaq closed with a gain of 24. a new report says the

country's biggest banks are still charging high overdraft fees. the consumer federation of america surveyed the 14 largest banks and says their median overdraft fee is $35, the same as it was last year, that $35 charge can be triggered if customers overdraw their checking account by as little as $5. you may soon be able to buy popular cholesterol drug lipitor without a prescription. the pharmaceutical giant pfizer has not confirmed it but the "wall street journal" says the company hopes to offer an over-the-counter version of lipitor when prescription generics become available in december. budweiser is giving its beer cans a new look, an effort to revive weak sales, parent company anheuser-busch unveiled a bolder sleeker design for its cans that puts a mefy emphasize on the bow tie design, it's the 12th redesign since they began

ensure clinical strength... helping you to bounce back. ensure! nutrition in charge! two russian two russian spacewalkers spent six and a half hours working outside the international space station. they did maintenance work and launched a satellite. the satellite contained messages with this year's 50th anniversary of the flight of the first man in space. overseas another deadly attack this morning on a government official in afghanistan. police in the northern afghan city of kunduz say an intelligence official was killed in the bombing, three children were also wounded by the explosives planted in the official's car. the u.n. security council is condemning syria for attacking civilians and calling for an end to the violence there.

the u.n. action was triggered by wednesday's continuing military assault against the city of hama. reports say more than 100 people have been killed there in the last four days. former egyptian president hosni mubarak is being held at a hospital outside cairo this morning. his trial on charges of corruption and ordering killings of protesters will resume august 15th. the sight of him in court wednesday stunned viewers. elizabeth palmer reports. >> reporter: egyptians were seeing it with their own eyes and still hardly believed it. their once untouchable president hosni mubarak came into court flat on his back in a gurney and then appeared in court in a prisoner's cage and appeared next to his sons with several officials on trial, too. mubarak is accused of corruption and the killing of protesters. "do you understand the charges" asked the judge? "yes," he said, "i plead not guilty." mubarak was forced out of office on the 11th of february, after millions of egyptians took to

the streets. more than 800 were killed during the uprising by thugs alleged to be acting on mubarak's orders. until the very last minute, people here did not believe this was going to happen. there was fighting, rock throwing, cheering, but the minute hosni mubarak was wheeled in and appeared in that cage on his bed, everybody turned to the television, they cannot take their eyes off this spectacle. all of this is really a side show. the main point came through loud and clear, a mighty arab strong man once backed by america has been brought to book by his own people. mubarak will be back in court on the 15th of august. no matter what happens next, wednesday's trial has already sent shock waves throughout the middle east and there's more than one regional leader watching rather anxiously. elizabeth palmer, cbs news, cairo. in australia, police are hunting for a masked man behind a bizarre bomb hoax. investigators say

the man broke into a wealthy family's home in suburban sydney and chained what he claimed a bomb to the neck of an 18 years old woman. it took investigators hours to remove the bomb. the bomb turned out to be a fake. we'll take a quick break, when we come back weather. and in sports, has he tempted his hand? alex rodriguez under fire for illegal poker. finally, there's a choice for my patients with an irregular heartbeat called atrial fibrillation, or afib, that's not caused by a heart valve problem. today we have pradaxa to reduce the risk of a stroke caused by a clot. in a clinical trial, pradaxa 150 mg reduced stroke risk 35% more than warfarin.

"star" magazine reports a-rod was scene last month playing in illegal poker games in beverly hills. if it turns out he did participate he could face suspension. he's currently on the disabled list after having knee surgery. the yanks didn't miss his bat against the white sox they unloaded on chicago, 23 hits. curtis granderson drove in five

when he found out. >> my father was crying, he was yelling, he was cussing out my uncle for both of them for what they had done. he said "you realize you've ruined your life." she said her father and uncles are all dead. the fbi declined to comment. jerry lewis and the muscular dystrophy association ended their long relationship. lewis hosted the annual telethon for 45 years. in may he said he would step down this year but would remain as chairman. the organization says he's out as chairman and won't be on next month's telethon. lewis and the mda did not say why their relationship ended. say hello to the newest member of the indianapolis zoo, she is an indian african elephant, born two weeks ago by artificial insemination and weighs 238 pounds. she's gaining about one pound per day. that's a big girl. the zoo plans to let the public name the elephant. this morning on "the early show" the latest on the ground turkey recall that's killed at least one person. i'm terrell brown. this is the "cbs morning news." rson.

for many americans, these are tough economic times and especially tough for the unemployed. cbs news anchor scott pelley reports from california, more than 2 million people are out of work, the most in any state. >> another day and no dollar. >> reporter: for these educated highly skilled californians, looking for work is the hardest job they've ever had. >> how is everyone here doing on their job search? >> every week they come to experience meetings to polish their resumes and computer skills. >> i'm volunteering and helping people. >> jack valarious has been out of work nearly two years. in those 3:00 a.m. moments you ask yourself what? >> why can't i get a job? why aren't i being hired?

>> i go into this website a lot. >> reporter: terry smith also two years unemployed just ran to the end of the maximum 99 weeks of unemployment benefits. what happens now? >> i'm sending resumes as admin support to roofing companies, plumbing companies, i'm on craigslist and hopefully somebody will recognize my experience and skills. >> it occurs to me it's not just about a paycheck, is it? >> no, it's not. >> it's about having affordable health care, because that goes away when you get laid off. >> what are you hearing when you apply for a job? >> that's the big problem. we're not hearing anything. they have these systems if they scan your resume, if you don't have the key words that they're looking for, it just gets filed or trashed. >> if it isn't in the first third of the first page. >> computers are reviewing these resumes so you don't get a human being? >> no. >> how does it feel to be
