stocks sink. wall street suffers its worst drop since 2008 and triggers a worldwide sell-off. now investors are bracing for new unemployment numbers. thumbs down, in the wake of the debt crisis and the economic slump, americans' view of congress sets an all-time low. and life on mars? new evidence of liquid water boosts the hope of finding life on the red planet. captioning funded by cbs >> good morning, everyone, i'm terrell brown in for betty nguyen.ñr we begin this morning with r fear, what's driving the loss on wall street.

the dow lost more than 500 points yesterday. investors are running scared over fears the u.s. could be headed into another recession. job numbers will also be out later this morning. if they're worse than predicted that could lead to another big sell-off. the latest on the u.s. and world markets this morning with jay dow in washington and tina kraus in london. jay, good morning. >> good morning to you terrell. if the debt crisis rattled investor confidence there's concern today's new unemployment numbers could send the market into an even deeper decline. today's government report is not expected to calm jittery investors. economists predict employers added only 75,000 jobs last month. unemployment is expected to hold steady at 9.2%. [ bell ringing [ it's the last thing wall street wants to hear. stocks tanked thursday over fears about america's shaky economy and the debt crisis in europe.ñi the dow jones fell 513 points, the biggest loss since the recession began. the nasdaq dropped more than 5%, tumbling 137 points.

>> whether it slipped into a recession that is contracting, we just don't know, but the economy is behaving very badly and it's right at the cusp. >> reporter: officials from the federal reserve plan to meet next tuesday to review the latest unemployment report. they're not expected to announce any new measures to boost job creation or the economy. >> i definitely didn't picture myself in this situation. >> reporter: christina got her graduate degree in journalism aó year ago and has been unemployed ever since.ñi if things got much worse she may have to look outside her chosen field. >> once my unemployment benefitó are up i'll be forced to probably waitress or bar tend, or something like that. >> reporter: christina is not the only one worried about the future. according to a cbs news/"new york times" poll 80% of the public thinks the economy is in bad shape and only 22% believe the government's new debt deal will make things any better. this issue of uncertainty has trickled down to the consumer level. there's concern yesterday's

market meltdown and the nation's 9.2% unemployment rate could put a damper on consumer spending which accounts for 70% of our economic activity. terrell? >> jay dow getting us started in washington this morning, thank you so much. appreciate it. that same sense of pessimism is driving stock prices down around the world. tokyo's nikkei plunged more thai 350 points today, a drop of more than 3.5%, and hong kong's hang sengfeld more than 5%.ñi tina kraus is in london with more. good morning to you.çó >> good morning, terrell. the global markets took añi tume onñr the turbulence on the heel in the states. numbers are down across asia and here in london. european leaders are in talks to solve their own debt crisis. asia markets took a cue fromñi e u.s. turmoil and plummeted across the board. china and japan are calling for global cooperation as investors fear the world economy could slip back into recession.

europe's worsening debt crisis is also triggering turmoil.ñrñi will hold emergency talks with german chancellor angela merkel. greece has been rescued from ñi debt twice, now it looks like spain and italy, the euro zone's third and fourth largest economies, may need their own bailouts. >> italy's economy has performed really badly the last ten years. it clearly shouldn't have been in the euro, yet it could drag down the whole of europe.ñi >> reporter: london's ftse 100 index took a massive dive thursday, stripping nearly $80 billion from the value of its shares, biggest one day drop since march of 2009. futures trading in europe indicates it will be another down day. investors say they're anxious and pessimistic about the financial future and across the globe, they are preparing for the worst. and no surprise this morning that european shares have

plunged to 14-month lows and it's a friday freefall for the london ftse which opened down an hour ago down 2.5%. >> tina kraus in london, thank you very much. appreciate it. all of the economic turmoil along with the debt ceiling crisis in washington recently has made this a real summer of discontent for american voters. 82% surveyed for a cbs news/"new york times" poll disapprove of congress. 74% of registered voters say most members of congress should not be reelected, but americans are split on president obama's handling of the debt debate. 46% approve, 47% disapprove. today the senate is expected to pass a bipartisan deal to end the partial shutdown of the faa. it doesn't resolve a political dispute in congress, but thousands of workers could be back on the job as early as monday. joel brown reports. >> reporter: the senate has ñr agreed to a house approved bill that would end a partial shutdown of the faa.

the stalemate furloughed 4,000 faa employees and put more than 70,000 contract workers out of a job. >> you know it's ridiculous. people work hard for a living. >> reporter: the deal expected to pass friday would allow the faa to operate through mid-september. the bill includes cuts to ruralr airports but democrats say they expect the transportation ñi secretary to waive or negate those cuts.ñi during the shutdown, safety was never compromised and flights were not affected but the government lost about $30 million a day in uncollected ticket taxes. the impasse also made for another bitter battle in washington with each side pointing fingers at the other and the white house applying pressure. >> why in the midst of a situation where we're not growing enough and we're not creating enough jobs, actions taken for political reasons in congress have thrown 70,000 people out of work. >> i don't believe that any member of the united states house of representatives or the

united states senate thinks that it's okay forñr the faa to not e extended while the differences between the two bodies are çó worked out. >> reporter: president obama praised the agreement saying "we can't afford to let politics in washington hamper our recovery so this is an important step forward."çó lawmakerç "re likely to clash over policy issues when they take up long-term funding next month. joel brown, cbs news, burbank, california. federal investigators in illinois say a woman who flew a small airplane in restricted air space in chicago was surprised when she was intercepted by a pair of f-16 fighter jets. the f-16s were sent from toledo, ohio on wednesday to south barrington, illinois, near chicago. air controllers couldn't contact the pilot, a 75-year-old woman ó because the plane didn't have a radio. she landed after those fighters arrived. coming up, the latest on the bloody government crackdown on protesters in syria. plus polygamist leader warren jeffs convicted of child

president h assad. since sunday troops have been firing on civilians from the ground own rooftops. lara logan reports. >> reporter: this is what the government of bashar al assad doesn't want syrians or the world to see, the syrian army gunning down its own people on the streets of hama, captured ii this amateur video, with foreign media barred and the city sealed off by the army an independent account of the situation is çó impossible. the syrian government continues to deny their forces have entered the city, but amateur videos recorded by the people od hama and posted daily on the internet appear to show a very different picture.xd the u.s. ambassador to syria went to hama just before the crackdown. >> the syrian government was saying fhgre are armed groups up in hama. i went there. i didn't see a single gun. the most dangerous weapon i saw was a slingshot. >> reporter: as the army

tightens its grip, activists ani human rights groups say at least 100 people have been killed there. secretary of state hillary clinton says the syrian eovernment has killed 2,000 people countrywide since protests began four months ago. >> the shooting death of a 1-year-old recently by the syrian regime's tanks and troopi is a very stark example of what is going on. >> reporter: the people of hama/ have a history of rising up against the assad family, up to 25,000 people were killed there in 1982, when a rebellion was crushed. an eyewitness in hama interviewed on thursday criticized the arab world and the international community for watching silently as the syrian people are being butchered. echoing the sentiments of many protesters in syria. lara logan, cbs news, washington. in texas today polygamist leader warren jeffs faces sentencing for sexual abuse of

highs from oklahoma city to austin. in sports this morning, nfl players have officially ratified their new contract with the league. the deal ended the four and a half month lockout and players are now in training camps. for the first time the contract includes testing players for human growth hormones. in baseball payback for cliff lee and the fill phillies. hunter pence and john mayberry hit back-to-back home runs. lee pitched in the world searies last year. lee struck out eight. philadelphia 3-0. in the american league, cleveland's carlos santana hits a go-ahead home run against boston, the indians held on for a 7-3 victory, dropped the red sox into a tie with the yankees first place in the a.l. east. tiger woods is back, 16th hole at the bridgestone invitational woods made a dramatic 30-foot birdie putt, finished 2 under, six shots off the lead. woods almost missed three months with a leg injury.çó

on the "cbs morning news," here's a look at today's weather. severe storms are forecast in ñi the northern plains with hail, gusty winds and a few tornadoes. other storms will bring heavy rain to parts of the southeast. the heat continues in the southern plains especially in texas and oklahoma. here's another look at this morning's top stories. stocks on wall street and markets around the world have plummeted raising new fears of a double dip recession. new unemployment figures out today are not expected to help. and thousands of furloughed faa workers ad(contractors are expected to return to work on monday following a bipartisan xd deal in congress to end a

partial shutdown of the agency. nasa scientists say there's strong new evidence of liquid water on mars that boost the chances that life may exist there, too.ñi newly analyzed pictures from a nasa satelliteñi orbiting the r planet show dark stains that come and go with the seasons. it's probably water flowing just below the surface in the summer and freezing solid in the winter. the company responsible for recalling 36 million pounds of contaminated turkey is still trying to figure out how the salmonella got into its meat. one person has died, at least 77 others got sick. dr. john lapook reports on how this strain of salmonella is especially dangerous. >> reporter: the government used high-tech fingerprinting of salmonella to trace the latest outbreak to a meat processing plant in spring dale, arkansas. the strain, salmonella heidelberg alarms doctors. it sent almost 40% of patients to the hospital, a rate much higher than usual. michael osterhol an infectious

president obama is announcing plans to help military veterans to work. millions of the afghanistan and iraq wars are unemployed. bill whitaker talks about the ñi struggles of one troop. >> reporter: in iraq the 41st infantry combat team provided security for convoys day and night, a dangerous job. from july 2009 to march 2010, convoys were routine for gunners lawrence burnham and stephanie anderson, good soldiers, they risked their lives and did their jobs and dreamed of returning home toñr routine civilian jobss stephanie said in this video resume posted from iraq.
