in years gone by. >> awesome. >> could have ended about an hour earlier. >> could you start a little earlier. >> start at 7, not at 8. >> weather-wise it was great. >> we are looking at good weather today. a heatup around the bay area as high pressure is building n less fog and looks like the temperatures will soar early on. we still have patchy fog and most of that near the coastline some patches inside the bay. we are going to talk about 90s around the bay area. more on that in a moment. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> there is not much going on. >> what? >> it's 4:30 in the morning. we have roadwork. i can tell you about roadwork in the north bay through novato. that's why you see some slowing there on our sensors from highway 37 down to 580 on 101. so watch out for that. plus we have roadwork in oakland and san jose. we'll tell you all about it coming up in just a few minutes. >> but no cars.

>> probably just leaving the concert, too. stocks were whip latched on wall street after the fed laid out a plan for an economic recovery. asian stocks rebounded. hang seng up 3%. nikkei up 1.1%. kospi up 1.8%. yesterday the dow was up nearly 430 points. that's the best performance in nearly 2.5 years. it recovered more than half of what it lost in monday's 634- point plunge. it's still 12% off the high of the year. we are now learning of the arrests in the murder of a 3- year-old boy killed in a drive- by shooting. anne makovec is in oakland where police are trying to find

the shooters. good morning. reporter: they have arrested two people and police believe they will arrest a third person who they believe is the shooter in the next 24 hours. little carlos fernandez nava was shot monday afternoon on international boulevard in east oakland. hundreds gathered last night at a vigil at the scene of the shooting where little carlos was caught in the crossfire of what police believe is a gang shooting. two people were arrested this week after police served warns all over the east bay, hayward, alameda and pittsburg but inside sources say the shooter is on the loose. they say they know he has gang ties that claim the street near the crime scene. he attended skyline high school and allegedly moved away to the desert southwest and then returned to oakland just before the shooting. they say he has a rap sheet

including gun charges. they say this morning they are hot on his trail. coming up here in the next half hour we'll hear from one of the witnesses to this shooting that caught the whole community by surprise obviously and a lot of concern. that's why police are working quickly on this case. more on that coming up. >> thank you. two suspects in the beating of giants fan bryan stow are due in court today. 29-year-old louie sanchez and 30-year-old marvin norwood will face charges this morning in los angeles. those charges include mayhem, assault, battery, as well as other counts. as for stow, there was an event held in los angeles last night. this was to help pay for his recovery. >> like the fundraisers, this kind of thing really helps out, the people we don't know who are there to support us have been huge.

>> the 42-year-old stow remains in a medically-induced coma at san francisco general hospital. thousands of police officers are flooding into london. they are beefing up efforts to end four days of riots and looting. police have drawn up backup plans to use water cannons if necessary. british prime minister david cameron set up an emergency meeting for parliament tomorrow, which has been on break. the riots started after police shot and killed a 29-year-old man last week. violence has sparked travel advisories from the united states and several european countries. >> when you fly over there how do you know there's not going to be problems at heathrow or problems at railway stations or bus stations? >> london doesn't want the bad publicity to spill on two huge events next summer, the olympics and the queen's diamond jubilee. so far travel agents say many

hotels are already booked and people started reserving apartments about a year ago. california's schools and social services face another round of drastic cuts. the tax revenue fell $539 million for the state. that's 10% below what was expected to roll in. sales tax numbers were down 12.5%. and corporate taxes were down 19.3%. the price tag for california's high-speed rail project in the meantime is skyrocketing. the initial section is anywhere between $10 to $14 billion. the original estimate was $7 about. the california high-speed rail authority says community-driven design changes account for two- thirds of the increased costs. after three years, vallejo is emerging from bankruptcy. in 2008, vallejo became the largest california city to go bankrupt. dozens of police and firefighters all laid off. city employees took furlough days and paid more into

retirement and healthcare and now that city has a balanced five-year plan. >> there needs to be better planning to manage your financial affairs, whether you're an individual family or whether you're a city. you don't enter into obligations that you can't satisfy. >> the city announced that nine new firefighters, three more police officers, will be hired in short order. 4:37 now. it feels like it's been clear and warmer. have you noticed that, or is it just me? >> it's been clearing a little earlier around the bay. we are ready for just sunshine, though, lawrence. >> i know. i know. you know what? less fog around the bay area right now. high pressure overhead is compressing the marine layer not allowing it to move well onshore so you still have some fog right along the coastline a couple patches just inside the bay, but the valleys nice and clear right now aand that means we are going to heat things up in a hurry by today. numbers now in the 50s around the bay area, warmer interior,

58 degrees in livermore. 58 in concord. and clear and 57 degrees, some clear skies in toward san jose. now, by the afternoon, i think we start to see more 90s beginning to pop up. plan on about 90 degrees in livermore, about 88 and sunny in fairfield, 84 in san jose. at the coastline a couple of glimmers of sunshine as well, patchy fog, temperatures there mainly into the 60s and 71 in oakland. the next few days we'll see high pressure holding on here bringing with it plenty of sunshine for most of the prayer. then as we head through the weekend things will change a bit. the ridge starts to break down. some cooler air moves in as early as sunday. i think much cooler temperatures well below average as we start out next week. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> thank you. we have a couple of things going on the start off in san jose. coming up highway 85, southbound right there approaching union, we have an accident. looks like it was just cleared to the right shoulder so again we are not seeing any delay with this. otherwise, we have roadwork in

the south bay. we have a ramp closure until about 5:00 this morning. southbound 280 to northbound 880. the main lines of the freeway, though, across the south bay look okay. here's live camera near that interchange showing you northbound traffic approaching the 880/17 interchange. there's a couple of headlights right now. so pretty quiet obviously at this time of the morning towards cupertino. your bridges, bay bridge is fine. metering lights off. san mateo bridge this looks good, as well. this is the commute direction westbound 92. eastbound 92 looks good toward hayward and we just did a mass transit check for you and everything is off to a great start. everything is on time so far for bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain. we'll have more traffic coming up in a bit. in the meantime, back to you. >> thank you. some kids have not eaten any food in a month. coming up we'll have the latest on the crisis in somalia. >> and the grocery chain that's

starting at $70 dollars. it's a network of possibilities -- helping you do what you do... even better. u-s. president obama paid his the bodies of 30 troops who were killed in a helicopter attack in afghanistan back here in the united states now. president obama paid his respects to the fallen men at dover air force base yesterday. the bodies still need to be identified by military doctors but the pain of the loss is already evident. brian bill was among the navy seals killed in the attack. >> heartbroken. they are the best of the best. and we can never thank them enough for the sacrifice that they have made. >> among the dead, a native of napa county, 29-year-old darrik benson. his grandparents told cbs 5 he will be buried in san diego at the same base where he became a

navy seal. the officials of kenya are overwhelmed with the refugees from somalia. families who walked through the desert for weeks then wait in long lines just for admission to camp in kenya. one family has been waiting in line for four days. once inside, doctors do what they can to save the children some of whom have been without food for 30 days or more. it's estimated that 29,000 children under the age of 5 have already died. whole foods doing damage control after being accused of caving to conservative bloggers. it comes after the national chain launched a new marketing campaign for ramadan touting a new line of frozen foods but didn't take long for bloggers to accuse whole foods of supporting terrorism. an email obtained by houston press suggested whole foods was changing its campaign. but the company says it's not canceling the proposing.

>> i appreciate the fact that they stood behind their policy of celebrating diversity and promoting the campaign of ramadan and saying they are not going to give in to this campaign of hate. >> the whole foods campaign marks the country's first ramadan promotion by a national supermarket chain. analysts now believe apple is on pace to become the world's first trillion dollar company. the cupertino-based tech giant surpassed exxonmobil as the most valuable company in the world. apple's stock gained 6% yesterday, 6%! it brings the company's total value just under $347 billion. exxon finished on top. but apple will take the top spot for good. they take someone else's idea to execute it better. steve jobs is battling cancer and some worry what will become

they've already made ar . san jose police are looking for more possible suspects of a roofing repair scam. they have already made arrests in this case. three people from pomona are accused of elderly fraud and other felonies. police say they worked on mobile home roofs and raised the price substantially when the job was done. they are also accused of steal items from the homes of the elderly victims. 4:48 now. firefighters say a home that caught fire killing a martinez man did not have smoke detectors inside. firefighters found the man's body in the room where the fire appears to have started early yesterday morning. neighbors say the victim was visiting his son to help move everything out of the home because they were getting ready to sell it. it's still unknown what may have sparked the fire. an explosion at an alternative fuel company in southern california left two people badly injured. yesterday's blast ripped the

roof and front door off the building in sylmar. a former firefighter lost an arm and leg in the explosion. the plant had two gas tank explosions since 2008. it's had to anyway. the cause is under investigation. texas is officially in its second worst drought ever. texas has seen less than an inch of rain statewide in all of july. the state has seen the driest 10 consecutive months on record and no end in sight. the drought holds firm until at least october. there is a new cool idea to help end droughts around the globe. a french engineer says he wants to tow icebergs to drought ridden areas of africa. he says a boat dragging a 7 million-ton iceberg could make the trip in 141 days and only about 40% of it would melt. the plan could provide clean drinking water and make soil more fertile for farming. pretty cool. all right. we are heating up around the

bay area today. high pressure compressing that marine layer. that means a little less fog although we are seeing fog at the coastline today folks out the door. and some of that is making its way inside the bay. but most of the valleys are clear this morning, all signs pointing toward a warmer day here in the bay area, more sunshine on the way. so if you are stepping outside, mostly clear skies in the interior, couple of patches of fog just inside the bay. you have some partly cloudy skies out toward the coastline, temperatures there mainly into the 50s. i think as we head toward the afternoon, 80s, some 90s going to become more common as we look toward the afternoon hours. inside the bay, you will find a variety of temperatures. 60s, low 70s in toward oakland. as you work your way down the bay into the south bay you will see those temperatures turning into 70s and even some low to mid-80s. out toward the coastline we'll sneak in some sunshine and temperatures cool mainly in the 50s and 60s but it looks like a brighter day all around the bay area. right now, you have 58 degrees and clear in livermore. it's 58 and clear also in fairfield. 57 nice and clear in san jose.

and 54 degrees with some patchy fog showing up at the coastline in pacifica. hot in the central valley, 98 in fresno, 93 yosemite, 99 in redding one of the hot spots in the state, and 93 degrees in ukiah. so high pressure building in out of the desert southwest. we have been talking about this all week long a slow mover edging its way back toward the bay area helping to warm up the temperatures each day. today it's compressing the fog. we'll see more sunshine and looks like a brighter afternoon all around the bay area. even at the coast dreary places, looks like a little sunshine headed your way. 91 in morgan hill hill today. at the coastline, a lot of temperatures beginning to move up into the low to mid-60s in toward half moon bay and pacifica, 77 palo alto and union city. east bay temperatures hot in spots today.

about 92 in brentwood and antioch. and about 90 degrees in livermore. plenty of 80s through concord and pleasanton. just inside the bay, plenty of sunshine and 71 degrees in oakland and about 75 in hayward. how about our friends in the north bay? we'll bring sunshine there and temperatures warming up nicely. 70s and some 80s. some 50s and 60s out toward the immediate coastline but all in all, looks like a brighter and warmer day around the bay area. plenty of sunshine over the next couple days. the next change will be sun when a trough drops in toward the bay area. we'll see cooler temperatures arriving, more low clouds and fog, but if we're lucky that might mix out the fog as we head toward monday and tuesday, elizabeth. that means even brighter days maybe not quite as warm but could be pretty nice, very fall- like toward next week. >> i like fall. i'll be out of town so i don't care what's going on. jose. alum rock exit everything looks great right now. on the maps it's slow along the peninsula. this is ongoing roadwork in east palo alto. it's northbound 101 between university and marsh road. there is some various lanes blocked, should be wrapping up shortly by 5:00 when they said the cones should be picked up. slow traffic on the sensors. heading out, plan ahead. bay bridge, looks great. no delay, well, maybe a couple cars there in one lane but overall no big issues heading into san francisco. but we do have a giants game lunchtime later on this afternoon. 12:45, they take on the pirates over at at&t park. so expect some extra heavy traffic along the embarcadero, south of market or possibly across bridge, too. people heading into san francisco to watch them take on the pirates. all right. east bay 880 through oakland. looks okay as you pass the

coliseum. our sensors are mostly picking up top speeds. we have roadwork northbound 880 between oak and 980 again various lanes blocked. this has been ongoing roadwork, as well. sounds like they have the right lane blocked off until about 5:0or so this morning. here's a look at your drive time for that stretch. 15 minutes between 238 and the maze. southbound 880 traffic looks fine by the way if you are catching a flight heading towards oakland airport towards hegenberger. but really a quick ride all the way down into hayward. to the south bay northbound 280 traffic still looks great. no major issues across the south bay right now if you are heading out of downtown san jose. we do still have this roadwork so there is a ramp closure again should be wrapping up shortly by 5:00. southbound 280 to northbound 880 ramp is shut down until 5 a.m. approaching the dublin interchange, this is usually a slow spot later on in the morning commute but right now

good to go through pleasanton. a nice drive time all the way out of the altamont pass, 13 minutes now to take you towards 680 and the dublin interchange. mass transit remains on time. 22 bart trains all on schedule. remember kcbs once you do hit the roads. they're our radio partners. and you can find them at 740-am and 106.9-fm. a simple blood test is proving to be very effective in determining the sex of unborn babies. researchers say the test is 95% accurate in detecting a male baby at just 7 weeks. it's based on cell-free fetal dna taken from the mother's blood and was designed to be an alternative to more invasive procedures like amniocentesis. the information is in this week's journal of the american medical association. the nation's largest drugstore chain may start selling health insurance. sources say walgreens will offer up a variety of coverages through a private health insurance exchange. walgreens would not confirm or deny the plan. analysts say walgreens is part of a wave of new businesses
