afternoon, couple of patches of fog this morning, 60s into san francisco, 70s into oakland, 80s inland valleys. more on the weekend forecast coming up. let's check traffic with gianna. >> let's those 880. so far traffic looking good. no major snags to report as far as accidents. the only thing is road construction. i'll tell you where that is in just a few minutes. back to you. >> thank you. wall street is hoping to rebound this morning after another tough, tough day yesterday. stock futures good news are up this morning. >> the markets around the world to inslide. concerns over europe's debt crisis and weak economic growth are shaking investor confidence. the nikkei fell by more than half of a percent. hong kong's hang seng dropped 1%. south korea's kospi closed up 6.2%. jay dow explains how the president is now reacting to all this market anxiety. reporter: investors are bracing for another dose of whiplash on wall street. >> all of white house like the

markets to be in the green and not these multiple percentage down days. >> reporter: the dow sank more than 500 points wednesday, losing% of its value -- 4% of its value and wiping out tuesday's gains. fear over the weak u.s. economy and europe's own debt crisis appeared to be driving the wild swings and analysts do not expect the volatility to die down any time soon. >> people are looking for some form of confidence boost from the white house and the political machine. the investment community isn't getting it. that's what you see in the marketplace. >> reporter: the white house insists president obama is doing everything he can to jump- start the economy. wednesday met with the fed chairman and the treasury secretary to discuss the situation here at home and overseas. >> whether the markets are up or down, whether there's volatility or relative stability, this president is focused every day on the economy. >> reporter: with unemployment

around 9% and concern growing over a double-dip recession, americans do not seem convinced the government can get the job done. a new "washington post" poll found nearly 80% are dissatisfied with the way the political system is working. nearly 75% of americans have little or no confidence the government can fix the economy. jay dow, cbs news, washington. a new twist this morning in a gang shooting that killed a 3- year-old boy in the east bay. anne makovec is in oakland, where police are still looking for suspects. reporter: we know they have one person of interest in custody right now but no official murder charges have been filed in that case. so police are either continuing to build a case against that person or the shooter could still be on the loose. 3-year-old carlos fernandez nava was caught in the crossfire of what appears to be a gang shooting on international boulevard on monday afternoon. police sources say the intended targets of that shooting were

affiliated with a housing project next door lockwood gardens which has been in a turf war with people at another complex four blocks away, the lion creek apartments. sources say that is the group with which two people detained for questioning are affiliated but officially, police aren't saying much. >> we do have a person of interest in custody. the investigators are working very diligently to connect the dots in this case and to connect him and find out exactly what his role was in the killing of this little boy. >> reporter: are you still looking for other individuals connected with this shooting, possibly a shooter? >> yes, we are still looking for other individuals. >> reporter: police have recovered key pieces of evidence from the scene where a memorial is still set up this morning. police won't say, though, whether or not they have recovered the getaway car, a 2004 gray dodge neon s xp similar to this one, with spoiler and silver rims.

there is still a $40,000 reward out for any information leading to the arrest of the killer in this case. frank and grace? >> all right, anne makovec in oakland, thank you. two women pulled from a burning home in san francisco have died. 48-year-old marilyn mostly and her caretaker suffered smoke and burns from the fire sunday night on jackson street. they died on tuesday. the "chronicle" reports the fire department was delayed because the first emergency call went to a private party instead of to 911. the man charged with running down a 9-year-old in san francisco is due in court this afternoon. 21-year-old andrew vargas from hayward is charged with the collision last week on mission street. ryan white from pennsylvania said to be improving. a fundraiser yesterday added thousands to the donation to help pay that young man's medical bills. and a fundraiser will be

held tonight for the missing hayward nursing student michelle le. her family is having the event at chevy's in the stonestown mall in san francisco from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. today. police have reason to believe that le was murdered but so far they haven't found a body or arrested any suspects. meet me in san pablo and bring your guns. that's what prosecutors say a vallejo woman told two teenaged friends of her daughter in just a bizarre murder plot. 36-year-old darlene mcdade is accused of hiring the 15- and 16-year-old boys to shoot her ex-boyfriend's new wife. the victim was shot at twice in may and was hit in the leg in that first shooting. mcdade is in jail with bail at more than $2 million. >> she is charged with attempted murder, conspiracy, burglary and stalking. the burglary stems from during the search warrant they found property belonging to her ex-

boyfriend. >> mcdade and her ex-boyfriend were in a custody dispute with her 2-year-old daughter. one of the teens is under arrest. the other was released and is considered a witness to the crimes. we have developing news out of afghanistan this morning. five nato servicemembers have been killed in southern afghanistan. they were killed in a roadside bombing yesterday. no other details have been released. so far this month, 51 foreign servicemembers have died in the war. welcome to manchester. >> to britain now where police are raiding hundreds of houses in connection with the riots. today parliament is holding an emergency session on the violence. the prime minister says britain will look to the u.s. for help in fighting gangs which have sparked it. now hundreds of people have been arrested after four nights of rioting. and there was a candlelight vigil for riot victims in birmingham. a car ran over three muslims trying to protect their neighborhood from looters. one arrest has been made in

that case. unbelievable. it is 4:37 now. let's check traffic and weather. i understand thursday should be a good day, right, lawrence. it should be a fantastic day. if anything, almost exactly like yesterday just a couple of degrees cooler in some spots. patchy fog out there this morning along the coast, some of that inside the bay. most of the valleys still nice and clear. around the bay area this morning, temperatures very simple floor yesterday mainly into the 50s outside now. clear skies in livermore, 56. 56 in the napa valley and 53 degrees in santa rosa. this afternoon plenty of summer sunshine. we'll crank those temperatures up into the 80s in livermore today billion 7 degrees. 86 in con concord. about 80 and sunny in san jose. temperatures at the coast in the 50s and 60s with patchy fog. and the next few days shaping up to be very nice. i think high pressure holds on through friday but after that things begin to change as we head into the weekend. that ridge that's been building out of the desert southwest will start to retreat somewhat. temperatures will cool down.

we'll see a stronger sea breeze and that means more low clouds and fog on the way as we head into sunday and monday and those temperatures probably headed below average as we look toward the middle of the next week. let's check traffic with gianna. >> thank you. we have lots of roadwork out there. westbound 237 -- starting with san jose first, 101 off to a good start. there was earlier roadwork near tully but that's cleared. good there. now to westbound 237 and eastbound 237 that ramp to northbound 880 was closed for roadwork but they have wrapped things up early. they were saying 5:00 but so far, so good. it looks like traffic moving through there now. a couple of cars there so that connector is open. free-flowing through there. the ramp at jackson is closed. san mateo bridge no delays traffic good. the rest of 880 problem-free northbound as you work your way

the new california b new worries from california's fire agency over a new wildfire fee. the new california budget forces rural home owners to pay a special fee to make up the difference of millions tick taken away from the fire prevention. it can only be used for brush clearing and education not for firefighters and equipment. in a worst-case scenario cal

fire would suffer decuts to its firefighting ability. >> this is important. i wouldn't mind but if that means we are not getting the additional firefighters it's a concern. >> the board of forestry and fire protection is confident that it will be able to reword the wildfire fee bill quickly and send it off to lawmakers for a vote. san francisco police department is taking 30 officers off weekday shifts moving them to nights and weekends. the move from the new chief is part of an effort to beef up staffing numbers at times when crimes are more prevalent. about 65% fall on the night and weekend. half of the motorcycle officers are being sent to some of the neighborhoods, as well. 4:43. candidates for san francisco mayor have another debate this evening the second since monday when interim mayor ed lee announced he is running for

office. it will be at the african- american art and cultural complex starting at 6 p.m. the environmental impact of the america's cup events on san francisco bay is under discussion and protest today in san francisco. city planners hold a hearing on the eir at noon at city hall. groups who do not think that report is adequate will hold a protest rally just outside city hall prior to the hearing. the races will be on the bay over the next two years. new safety measures are being considered for the mavericks break. >> they are. the san mateo county sheriff's office is considering using jet skis at the popular surfing beach. they want to use them to make sure that the surfers are safe but personal jet skis are prohibited in the waters there because it's part of the farralons national marine sanctuary. the advisory council will hear a proposal later tonight. a shocking admission about the tainted turkey scare.

43 year-old steven john carlson, did not enter a plea at his first ap the suspect in a 27-year- old cold case will be in case. steven carlson did not enter a plea at his first appearance yesterday based on a new analysis of dna evidence police saying he murdered his 14-year- old classmate tina faels back in 1984. since carlson was 16 at the time, the case will be initially tried in a juvenile court but it will likely be transferred. prosecutors in the bryan stow beating case say arguments will be based on admission from both suspects. yesterday comes chez and marvin norwood pled not guilty to charges of mayhem and assault and battery. bryan stow's family says he continues to make progress. four redwood city boys are charged with robbing a nonprofit. police say the boys used a crowbar to break into the offices of friends for youth the organization that provides adult mentors to keep at-risk

teens out of trouble. now, the boys are charged with stealing computers and electronics. most of the equipment was later recovered in those boys homes. the woman accused of robbing jeopardy host alex trebek in the city was heading to work at the hotel she said as a prostitute. lucinda moyers lawyer say she was meeting a client last month at the marriott marquis. she is accused of stealing cash and trebek's bracelet. tremendous beck tore his achilles tendon in the robbery chasing the suspect. you could call a little roundup in washington state after a bull got loose in downtown -- look at this! >> at last a bull, run, it's coming this way, partner, run! >> that's right, run. >> look at this. it was the middle of the night when police tried to catch that bull. it ran 4 miles through town. then police had to call in the

[ laughter ] >> awesome stuff, lawrence. >> we need the bulls to return, don't we? our stock market could use that. hey, folks, we are looking at some patchy fog around the bay area. it's very thick at the coast but patchy at the bay, clear in the valleys right now. it looks like as we head throughout the day we are going to see more sunshine. should be a fantastic day almost a weather repeat from what we had yesterday. sunny skies in the valleys. some places hot well inland maybe creeping into some low 90s there. inside the bay you will see 60s and upper 70s into oakland and alameda. some 80s toward the santa clara valley. at the coast, patchy fog, a little sunshine there sneaking in too and temperatures in the 50s and 60s. right now fairly uniform temperatures around the bay area. 56 san jose, 55 cloudy into san francisco, 55 gray in pacifica, as well. looks like we are going to see some nice heat. if you like the hot stuff

triple digits as you as you make your way into fresno and really they have not had many of those days this year so enjoying some sunshine there. 91 degrees in sacramento. 80 degrees in lake tahoe. 91 in yosemite. high pressure is hanging around but i'm seeing changes now in the not too distant future. this ridge will weaken for the weekend. summer sunshine for today meaning low clouds and fog giving way to sunshine this afternoon. numbers looking nice toward the santa clara valley. 80 in san jose, 83 los gatos, 78 sunnyvale, sunshine into fremont. about 76 degrees there. patchy fog at the coast. a cool 59 in daly city. east bay numbers you may still see some 90s but you have to head well inland for that today. these temperatures a little cooler than yesterday, still about 92 in brentwood. about 87 degrees the forecast

for livermore, about 85 in san ramon, and about 69 degrees in berkeley. in the north bay, we'll see some sunshine after a couple of patches of fog should be a great day in the napa valley 77 by the afternoon, 78 in santa rosa and about 76 degrees plenty of sunshine in petaluma. we are going to see some very similar weather, it's been a fantastic week weather-wise but things change saturday and sunday. that ridge of high pressure begins to retreat and move out and a trough dives in bringing with it more low clouds and fog, some cooler temperatures on the weekend. these numbers running well below average monday and tuesday. warmest may be the mid-80s, the rest of the bay area socked in with low clouds and fog. we are going to jump to the maps and show you conditions along 880 and 92. we have roadwork southbound 880 connector to 92 jackson so heads up it should be wrapped

up in the next few minutes. san mateo bridge, no problems. traffic looking good both directions between hayward and foster city. it's 13 minutes. dumbarton bridge westbound roadwork until 6:00. jumping to the bay bridge, towards the bay bridge off the eastshore freeway, no troubles. 47 miles per hour as you work your way near berkeley and emeryville. once you get to the bridge traffic very light, metering lights still off, no major delays to report. looks good approaching the toll plaza. once you get across the upper deck, no wind advisories, traffic looks good into san francisco. on the lower deck of the bay bridge we have roadwork approaching the skyway that will be there at least until 6:00. jumping to the golden gate bridge, very light just a few cars out there on the roadway. in fact, most of our delays out of marin county are due to the construction project south of 37. little yellow here on our sensors so southbound seeing delays right now 37 to 580 will take but 13 minutes typically only 8 minutes when there is no

roadwork. east bay travel times looking good north 680 only 11 minutes from 24 to the benicia bridge, 580 problem-free no delays right now through the altamont pass and if you are taking 80 from the carquinez bridge to the maze, you are looking at about a 15-minute ride through there. mass transit right on time. bart, ace, muni metro and caltrain no delays to report. remember kcbs once you do hit the roads. they're our radio partners. and you can find them at 740-am and 106.9-fm. that's traffic. back to you. >> thank you. there are some calls for changes in food safety rules after last week's big turkey recall. 36million pounds of ground turkey were taken off store shelves after one death and dozens of illnesses nations wide from salmonella. it turns out that cargill meat company knew last year about the salmonella problem but could not issue a warning or recall because the federal law says meat is not considered a health threat until it is directly linked to the illness. meanwhile health experts say the global swine flu pandemic is over.

the world health organization says several reports show that the h1n1 virus has run its course but the virus has not gone completely. health experts say it will now act more like a seasonal flu. 4:55 now. and a new york icon will close for a multi-million dollar makeover. the statue of liberty renovations will last a year starting on october 29th. crews will upgrade fire systems, elevators and bathroom. liberty island will be open during the construction. a majority of visits don't climb inside the statue. they just want to take a picture with it. it was once filled with water, mold and tens of thousands of evacuees. but the makeover at the louisiana superdome is done. state and city officials showed off the new stadium yesterday with the new improvements. seats replaced, luxury seats added, the saint locker room twice the original size.

the $336 million project began after hurricane katrina wreaked havoc on the building in 2005. >> we have a little football game there tomorrow night, 49ers and saints right here on cbs 5 at 5:00. hundreds of giants fans are sleeping in the yard right now speaking of the stadium. the joints are holding their ninth annual slumber party a chance for fans to lay their head on the lawn that the team calls home. >> it's like a dream come true. it's so cool. it's like we get to see the players play on here right before and then we get to sleep. it's amazing. >> not sure the grounds crew loves putting the stakes in. i don't know if there were any camp firearms. over 500 fans attended. it was the biggest turnout since the event started 10 years ago. >> i'm sure campfires were put out quickly. >> in boston the previous owners wouldn't let you even touch the field. the new ownership the last six or seven years, they let the kids run the bases and all that. let the people come.
