samaan failed to return his daughter madeline to the child's mother over the weekend. the couple has shared custody... but authorities believe the child may be in danger... and the pair may be headed to the bay area. samaan is known to drive a green 1998 toyota 4- runner with california license plate 3x-rm-111. anyone with information should contact the f-b-i in sacramento. another horrifying pit bull attack is puzzling investigators tonight. the victim wasn't a stranger -- or a child -- but the dog's pregnant owner. it happened inside her home on reina del mar avenue in pacifica. linda yee is in san mateo where a second dog is being examined for clues into what might have prompted the attack. linda.

we've averaged a thousand cc. >> reporter: it's $10 if they get their animals spayed or neutered. it makes it illegal to own a pit bull that isn't spayed or neutered. >> it's a public protection, public safety issue because it also requires funding in order to enforce an ordinance. it doesn't mean anything to have one if you can't enforce it. here in san francisco we made it clear in order to enforce it we would need extra officers. that came along with the ordinance. >> reporter: by his family's pit bull that led to the law. the humane society will perform a necropsy on the dead pit bull

and look at the female pit bull in the home to see what happened. it turns out that female pit bull was spayed. it wasn't clear why the male was not neutered. tonight the animal control officers here say they've talked to the family. they say both pit bulls were friendly and good with children. >> thank you. the search is on for armed robbers who broke into an armored car warehouse and locked two employees behind steel doors. they responded to a 911 call last night. an employee said they were robbed and trapped inside the warehouse. >> we arrived, we had to free the employees because the doors were locked, secured. once we treed the employees, we found they were unharmed. >> police don't know how many robbers were involved or how much money was taken.

the last white cross has been erected on the lafayette hillside. the men who started the project back in 2006 place placing a cross for every war casualty says it's too much for volunteers to maintain. more than 4000 crosses and islamic crescents have been planted in five years. the memorial as it is now will stay. san francisco public defender became the latest and possibly last to file papers to run for mayor. the deadline to enter the race is 5:00 p.m. today. it's a crowded field already let by interim mayor ed lee. so far there are 37. 36 people running. and hundreds of travelers inconvenienced for a time at oakland international airport. a suspicion package prompted a call from the bomb squad. it turned out to be nothing dangerous, just a water bottle

and a mattress pump in a box. california is still struggling to keep kids in school. a new tracking system reveals students if the state have a 1- 4 chance of dropping out before their senior year. the numbers are especially high in oakland. joe vasquez on why so many drop outs in a program that's trying to help kids graduate. >> reporter: at youth uprising, a summer jobs program is really education in disagrees. teenage students are given cash for passing computer classes which happen to be job requirements. >> they're giving people the chance to make something better out of their lives. >> reporter: the highest drop out rates in the state. a four-year graduation rate of 53% for oakland. the drop-out rate is 37%. >> hungry, never really had things. it's hard to focus in class with your stomach growling. >> reporter: only 68% of

hispanics, 59% of african americans, and 56% of students who are learning english made it to graduation. >> if you look at our textbooks, they're all ripped and written in. we don't have anything new, nothing good. >> reporter: some students tell me part of the problem is personal responsibility. some of their friends don't get that success comes from working hard. >> they don't take the value of education seriously. they don't know you have to go through hell to appreciate heaven. >> the drop out rates and graduation rates are dismal. >> reporter: it's time to refocus on retaining high schoolers. >> we've made great gains with the younger kids. we haven't been able to sustain those as they migrate through the system. >> reporter: a new generation can only hope those promises will be followed as the dark clouds of state budget cuts continue to gather. and even more alarming

actress are helping radio telescope dishes listen for intelligent life in the universe. >> here you have a picture of the telescope, a half a dozen antennas. >> reporter: the key to searching for extraterrestrial intelligence is this telescope array. >> the idea is that you can get a very large tell scone by building small elements. >> reporter: it was shut down in april when they ran out of money. thanks to over $200,000 in private donations, the array will soon be back online. >> the idea is to do with jodi foster did in impact. without this antenna farm, without this telescope, we can't do any listening. >> reporter: jodi foster

donated. the telescope array could turn science fiction into science fact but only if it's actively searching the skies. >> we haven't found anything so far. that's the nature of exploration. until you've made the discovery, all you can say is no, not yet. >> reporter: others are hopeful too. >> i think it's very important. if we stop looking, we'll never find it. the only shot you're guaranteed to miss is the one you don't take. >> reporter: keep the allen telescope array up and running through the end of the year while longer term financing plans are explored. lake tahoe's waters are a little less crystal clear these days. the environmental research center has clarity has declined about 4 feet in the past year. that's the second lowest since they began keeping records 43 years ago. it's not unusual for the readings to fluctuate, and the rate of decline is slowing.

what's the weather going to be like in tahoe this weekend? >> temperature into the 70s under the same dome of high pressure that we're experiencing with a few high and mid-level clouds that have been drifting through the horizon. from inspiration circle and dublin, topped out at 85 degrees. look at san francisco which has cleared out nicely. sure the clouds still lurk off the coasts. so far in san we've seen a a high temperature of 62 degrees. if you're out and about on this friday evening, the numbers vary from 60 to 84 in concord. we will see the return of the stratus and march on shore a good 50-60 miles. this time of the year, so many people say it must be just a

slam-dunk forecast. how easy is it? this is the most difficult part because you have to time out when the clouds will retreat. in fact, people want exactly know by their watch. i've given up on my watch. we have an enhanced marine layer. when it gets that deep, it takes a while to see any burn off even though we are under that influence of high pressure. so we will go with late-day beach clearing. at 60 degrees. oh, by the way, low and mid-60s all weekend in san francisco for the outside lands festival which takes place saturday and sunday beginning at 11:00 a.m. at golden gate park. make sure you have a jacket. 63 in berkley. 85 degrees for the warmest location inland in brentwood. 50s, 60s along the coast.
