agencies responded to the incident last night. a woman said that several men, at least one of them, armed, forced their way into her home. later an officer saw four men in the car matching those descriptions. two were caught immediately, another at 8:00 last night. >> he was actually found at the end of the block in the parking lot of the apartment complex hiding under a car. >> about 50 officers took part in the hunt for the suspect. a chp helicopter also combed the area. the search was called off last night at 9:30. it's starting up again this morning. right now, there's a statewide amber alert out for a 2-year-old girl. authorities say her father took her from her home in sacramento. that alert was issued just yesterday, even though the girl was reported missing earlier this week. robert lyles explains why the pair may be here in the bay area. >> reporter: sacramento fbi

tells cbs 5, the 49-year-old not only has friends in the bay area, but what they call resources. that samaan would want to avail himself of. you're looking at the last recorded images of samaan and his daughter in sacramento. that was last saturday morning. it's also the same day the fbi tells cbs 5 samaan was notified he lost custody of his daughter following a bitter divorce. the girl's mother didn't report her missing until tuesday, telling the fbi it wasn't uncommon for her ex-husband to return the girl late following a visit. after three days of searching, samaan's home in this up-scale sacramento neighborhood, his job and acquaintances, the fbi believes this case is full of danger because of what some call

dark. >> he wasn't using a cell phone or credit cards, tendering a child of 2 years of age. we issued an endangered missing advisory that went out to 600 different advisories for the state of california. >> reporter: some believe he got what he was denied, custody. >> very protective father. >> mourad samaan is 5 foot'6" 160 pounds. now the fbi says samaan is driving a green toyota four runner with license plates

3xrm111. an u.s. embassy member identified a victim as warren weinstein. he's been running a project. back in the u.s., make it or break it in iowa today. republicans are facing off where less than an hour away from this key event in the 2012 presidential campaign. the gop candidates are flooding the state of iowa. sarah palin is attending, though she's not competing in the pole and getting a lot of attention. >> i don't think i'm stealing any spotlight. if anybody seizes it, go get the other folks. >> the straw poll has been held five times. the strong showing could be a big campaign boost. rick perry is set to announce his candidacy later on today. crews are cleaning up a very wet mess in the east bay.

emeriville police say traffic may be slow this morning, all of this water spilled out last night at the intersection of powell and crispy. crews have turned the lane for repair work. no word on what caused that water main break. one man is recovering after an officer-involved shooting in the east bay. it happened last night in oak wood near the intersection of fruitville avenue and foothill boulevard. no word on what led police to shoot this man, manhattan who witnesses say is homeless was injured, but he is expected to live. a man and his teenaged girlfriend have been sentenced in the killing of that girl's mother. 21-year-old steven colver received life in prison for murdering a woman from eldorado who had forbidden the couple from staying together.

the girl, tylar witt, received 15 years to life. relatives have very harsh words for tylar witt. >> as far as i'm concerned, it'd never have happened in the first place, if it wasn't for her. what i saw was a deceptive, manipulative little girl who could hide her contempt for her mother. >> yesterday, a lawyer for tylar witt, now 16 years old, revealed a note that said "i miss you mommy." steven colver has filed an appeal of his murder conviction. two lucky boaters are recovering after a rescue in the san francisco bay. two stranded boaters were picked up on the island. the boat hit the rocks late last night. the boat didn't sink, but it did have to be towed away. thousands of people will be checking out one of the best

event. we will have a full moon. it'll be obscuring some of the brightest meteors that fly through the sky. now, meanwhile, the low clouds and fog, that's the big story. we're kind of stuck in this weather pattern where the clouds have surged inland overnight, at least a good 50, 60 miles. if you are out and about, heading out the door for an early morning bike ride or walk, it looks like temperatures currently in the 50s and 60s under mostly cloudy skies. clouds peeling back. it's a quiet weather pattern, also very stagnant weather pattern. we refer to it as at summertime dole drums.

the founder of project open hands was 89 years old. associate director jared sharer joins us about brinker's legacy and the group's future. tell us about project open hand. i think it's one of the organizations you don't think about much until you actually need it. a lot of people rely on you for your everyday needs. >> absolutely. we deliver meals and groceries to people with hiv and aids. anyone with a critical illness and to seniors. we serve both sides of the bay, both in san francisco and alameda county. we serve 2600 meals every single day. >> what inspired the start up of this? ruth and her idea, obviously it's grown very large. >> one of ruth's neighbors passed away due to complications of hiv and aids. she realized it wasn't because of the disease itself, it was because he was malnourished. she had a big heart and a kitchen. she started cooking for seven of

her neighbors. people started hearing about what she was doing, wanted to help voluntarily fear, wanted to contribute money to pay for the groceries. the organization has grown and grown. now we serve both sides of the bay, we serve anyone with a critical illness to help. >> what does it take to qualify for help? >> you need to be symptomatic of some type of disease. we have clients with breast cancer, we have clients with diabetes, heart disease, lung cancers, any kind of illness and you just have to get certified by a physician, we'll serve you right away. >> this has been in operation since 1985, of course the need has grown, but your resources, while they've grown, it's difficult to serve all of the people that are hearing about the project and trying to take advantage of the health care you have to offer. tell me about the challenges financially you guys have been facing. >> like any other non-profit in any tough economy, we have a hard time, you know, really getting out there in the community, raising funds, it's become a challenge.

just trying to tell people our story in new and creative ways is the best way we know how to raise money. we were a grassroots organization and rely on every single member to help contribute, to help raise the funds needed for ingredients for meals and groceries in our grocery center. >> the transportation of those things is really important. tell us about this contest, you already made it to the finals, nationwide, one of four non-profits, in the running for money for a new truck. >> absolutely. so we're looking for a new vehicle. >> we're taking a look right now at one of your old vehicles. this thing delivers food right now. >> it does, absolutely, it's quite a bit of a gas guzzler. gets 12 to 14 miles a gallon. we're in the running, right now, for a new vehicle. people can go online and vote. visit our facebook page, project open hand, vote today to help us

galaxies, tell us what the seti project is? >> just what jodie foster was doing in the movie contact. we use big antennas, try to ease it off on the aliens. >> are you trying to listen or communicate or both? >> we don't do what you do. we don't transmit, we don't broadcast. that might take too long. we're just listening. this is a passive experiment, we hope to pick up a signal that might have been sent hundreds, thousands of years ago but that would prove that we have cosmic company out there. >> if there were some aliens out there, how would they have to send a signal for you to receive it? >> it'd have to be powerful enough, it'd have to be aimed in our direction. all of that's not asking too much. it'd have to be the kind of
