and, the musical tribute marking the anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. a man who inspired the new bay area opera. it is 7:00 on saturday morning. the 3rd of september. big holiday weekend. thank you for joining us. i am ann makovik. >> a cooling trend on on the way. you can barely make out the tops of the buildings downtown. current temperatures outside right now on the mild side. sitting in the 50s for the most part. actually look at a nice warm-up in the inland spots later. i will tell you how hot we're going to get in a bit. >> he will check in with you in a few. investigators want to know how a leaking methane cylinder factors into a deadly blast in san mateo. the explosion blew one scientist out of the room and killed another. firefighters say it is not clear if the cylinder was leaking before the explosion, or if that damage was caused by

the blast. >> reporter: by the time firefighters got to him and tried to restart his heart. it did not look good. he was a scientist at menlo technology. >> just a very big boom. one single boom is all i heard. >> reporter: he was still alive when firefighters pulled him outside. they tried cpr but he died. a female co-worker just happened to be walking by the doorway when the force of the blast knocked her down and blew out her eardrums. the fire department says after the tanks exploded employees risked their lives and ran back into the chaotic scene. >> some tried to secure the other hazards in the laboratory and then they drug that individual from the laboratory and addressed the other individual who had been blown clear out of the laboratory. so that was a very brave thing for them to do and obviously they doob care about each other enough to do that. >> reporter: investigators say

the scientist was transferring a mixture of hechte methane, helium and nitrogen from one tank to another similar to these canisters when something ignited this gas. >> i know the ins and outs but i can't think of what could have gone wrong at this point. >> tim hill is the company's quality systems manager and was in the building at the time. he says membrane technology is a tight knit company with a family atmosphere. the death of his co-worker is a huge loss. >> i'm just -- real saddened that somebody was here telling me he was killed. i'm just kind of taking that in right now. >> ury news that he was 56 artin. and this morning we have learned the identity of the man who died in that explosion. the mercury news is reporting that it was 56-year-old adrian martin. the san rafael man beaten unconscious in a restroom during the 4 niners raiders game is speaking out. he's blaming the attack on lack of security at candlestick park. >> people didn't respond fast enough to where if it was even

more intense, i think my life could have been taken in a second because it wasn't quick enough. >> we didn't show you his picture because the 26-year-old man does not want to be identified. i believes the search for a suspect has cooled off because his condition is improving. and here is a sketch of the man police are looking for. he's described as a samoan, 6'3", 255 to 26 pounds. long hair and a goatee. san bruno is going to mark the one year anniversary of a deadly gas explosion that of course made headlines around the world. skyline college is going to host a ceremony on friday. last year's blast, it was september 9, left eight people dead and destroyed dozens of homes. and an east bay student recovering this morning from a shooting outside of his school. happened at north campus continuation school yesterday in san pablo. while police were on campus

investigating, reports of gunshots, they learned that a student who had been shot was at the emergency room. no one has been arrested. s. this - after a disappointing from the labor next week, we are going to hear about the president's plan to create new jobs. this after that disappointing report from the labor department came out yesterday. we learned that the u.s. did not add any new jobs in august. that's the weakest showing in nearly a year. nationally unemployment held steady at 9.1%. president obama is going to unveil his jobs plan on thursday. this morning, the gulf coast is getting heavy rain as tropical storm lee moves ashore. and it is strengthening. a live look at new orleans right now. the center of the storm is expected to hit louisiana late this afternoon. as randall pinkston shows us people there have prepared for the worst-case scenario. >> reporter: a slow-moving rain maker is threatening to dump as much as 20 inches of water along the gust coast over labor day weekend. the governors of mississippi

and louisiana have already declared a state of emergency. residents are being told to be prepared. >> make sure you have an evacuation plan in place. make sure you have plenty of drinkable water, nonperrishable food items. >> reporter: some residents of louisiana's only inhabited barrier island voluntarily left friday. >> i'm ready to go. >> others got their boats out of the water. >> didn't think the storm would build up as strong as they are talking about now. trying to get the boat out of the water and the camp sayu situated. >> reporter: a storm surge could raise water levels 2 to 4 feet in some areas. but officials are confident about the 120-mile levee system that protects new orleans. >> this is one of the gates right here. >> reporter: flood gates installed after hurricane katrina have been moored. >> we are confident it will perform as designed. >> reporter: south of the city in lafitte, ida dard and her husband live 3 feet above sea level. their home suffered damage three years ago after hurricane

gustav. >> at our age, it would be hard to go through that again. you have to pick up everything. everything has to go. >> reporter: lafitte's mayor predicts 30% of the homes, including the dard's could be in danger. randall pinkston, cbs news. more help on the way. to southern california where a huge wildfire is burning near major freeway that connects l.a. county to las vegas. fema just proved the -- approved the governor's request for financial aid in what is being called the hill fire. it started on interstate 15 yesterday. at one point the fire forced crews to shut down that roadway to holiday commuters. two firefighters were already injured. over 1500 homes have been evacuated. it is only 20% contained. ines, iowa. and check out this dash cam video from a police rescue in des moines, iowa. while one officer is fighting that fire you can see on the left side of your screen with an extinguisher, others worked to pull several people who are trapped inside that burning suv. police say it happened after a

car ran a red light and hit that ford explorer. one person died and five others survived. beach fans, watch out if you're heading into the water this labor day weekend. forecasters say conditions are ripe for strong rip current. they are warning people walking on the beach, don't turn your back on the ocean. we have heard that a few times. a giant rip tide can come seemingly from nowhere. most bay area beaches do not have lifeguards. >> that is something you have been watching christy? >> it is something people need to take seriously. don't turn your back to the beach. if you're at point reyes get some of -- those sneaker waves can sneak up and pull you in. be careful out there. the rest of the bay area will be gorgeous. plenty of blue. tell you more about what to expect later on this afternoon. and medical marijuana advocates rally today in oakland while the mayor says this is not an event for hippies. and the unsung hero who helped save thousands during

that's as the international cannabis and hemp expo kicks off this w it may get a little hazy in oakland today. that is as the international cannibus and hemp expo kicks off this weekend. this big event used to be held in san francisco. but the state blocked drug use on state property so they moved across the bay to an outdoor venue. happens to be right outside of city hall. city leaders want to remind visitors this isn't a free-for- all. >> this is not a smoke-in. this is not a hippie haight- ashbury event. they will have a lot of vendors for the industry there. so if someone thinks they are going to come smoke a joint, that's not going to happen. if it does, the expo is going to be shut down. we will see. you must be 18 years old to attend. and no marijuana will be sold at the event. so if you're heading out there

you may wonder, hey, is this a pot smoking? or is that the fog? >> it could be either. in fact, for this weekend, a lot of cloud cover out there. and definitely temperatures are going to be on the cooler side this weekend. isn't news people want to hear but for today, it will be pretty out there, even at the beaches we will see nice weather but right now as ann mentioned dealing request cloud cover and fog, you can't even make out the golden gate bridge. check out this shot. this summertime fog we're so used to. but there is sunshine in store later this afternoon. but as you make your way out the door this morning. that fog at the coast line along the bay, mostly cloudy conditions. some clouds as well in those inland spots. temperatures in the 50s for the most part. by this afternoon, though, coast line, we will see temperatures making their way into the high 60ss and low 70s, partly cloudy there at the bay. we will see temps in the 70s. mostly sunshine and definitely seeing sunshine in those inland locations. temperatures there warming up, high 80s, even some low-to-mid 90s, fog and cloud cover in the picture, blanketing most of the bay area right now surging into those inland locations.

we will start to see it peel back a little later on. temperatures in the 50s for the most part. although a few low 60-degree readings. and warming up nicely by this afternoon. clearing out pretty early on. norcal seeing warm temperatures. triple-digits for fresno and redding. 80 in lake tahoe. monterey almost making it 70 tote. as ann was talking about earlier. be careful if you're heading out tony tantillo beach. we're seeing surl swells and rip currents opinion those sneaker waves where you turn your back and you can get pulled into the ocean. if you're headed to point rays, be careful. and 82 for hayward. 92 in morgan hill. brentwood will be beautiful. 96, nice and toasty. 91 for concord and pittsburgh. pleasant hill making it to 92 today. up in north way, beautiful weather as well. 80 for mill valley, 82 in san rafael. 94 sonoma.

your seven-day forecast showing we are going to keep pleasant weather over the weekend but you will notice a slight cooldown willdown as we make our way to sunday and monday. we will see those temperatures drop a little bit. but as we make our way to midweek seeing that high pressure build back in, bumping those numbers up at least in those inland locations into the low 90s, and then cooling off once again. it is going to be a short lived warm-up. but for the weekend, pretty pleasant temperatures. it's not necessarily a hot, hot summer weather but i think still, enjoyable. have a great weekend outside still. certainly. once that fog burns off. >> exactly. >> thanks christy. in the next week, there are going to be a lot of ceremonies honoring the victims and heroes of 9/11, which happened a decade ago next sunday. and one of those celebrations is going to be right here in san francisco. this morning, allen martin takes a closer look at an opera called "the heart of a soldier" about september 11th and so much more. >> reporter: a decade ago,

terrorism lit its ugly bonfire on u.s. soil. we have been trying to extinguish it ever since. from trouble of the world trade center have come incredible stories of rescue and survival. but there is one story about one man, and his life death and legacy. one made by 9/11. >> i am looking at -- for 75, 76, 77, and 78 -- [ singing ] >> reporter: a story that will be presented by the san francisco opera. >> i am glad you're saying the story because it is about that story. it is about rick. it is about this man who i would have very much liked to and been honored to have met. ♪ time to head off to my work, my love ♪ >> thomas hanson will sing the role of rick roscorlo. born in britain, but came to the u.s. in the early 60s. he was a decorated soldier for america before becoming a u.s. citizen. >> hunting down terrorists. this will be the nature of war

in the future. >> reporter: as head of security for morgan stanley, predicted the threat of terrorists flying a plane into the world trade center. then, because he had anticipated and prepared, on 9/11, riscorla led all of morgan stanley's 2700 employees out of the south tower to safety. [ singing ] >> reporter: so how do you portray someone's life who is almost larger than life? everything he did in his life was tremendous. >> there are so many parts of him as a person that i -- i admire, and in some ways identify. i think he had a very sharp intuition. i think he was a very intelligent disciplined man. and he was the kind of person who could galvanize people to actions and beliefs deeper in themselves than they had themselves. >> reporter: and after all 2700 were out, riscorla went back in

for one final check. less than an hour after it was hit, tower 2 collapsed in a thundering crush of metal, glass, paper dust and debris. riscorla never came out. >> i honestly don't think rick went up those stairs the last time thinking, well, you got to go, you got to go, this is it. i mean, did he have that conversation with susan, he said look, whatever happens, i love you, i have never loved anything like you, and our life fulfilled me. i'm okay. you be okay. >> so many people have had to pick up and move on with their lives since september 11th. but this opera, inspired by the book, heart of a soldier, hopes to be one way that the country can reflect and move ahead. that struck you so deeply? >> communal tragedy? communal mourning. and within that, the lives of three people who developed up to the point where they could play critical roles on 9/11. ♪[ music ] >> gockley whose original credits include harshy milk and nixon in china says this story has all the element -- harvey milk and nixon in china says this story has all the elements. history, love, tragedy, and certainly a hero. >> there have to be particular challenges, though, dealing with the fact that the pinnacle of this story happens on september 11th, and here we are 10 years later. >> it is a sensitive topic and i think we have taken a calculated risk that -- that our event, our opera, will help people through the event. ♪ [ music ] ts at the war memorial opera

explosion and fire at a menlo park office building. a deadly explosion, one person was killed. what happened moment before an explosion and fire at a menlo park office building. coastal communities on high alert as tropical storm lee slams into the gulf coast. plus, what we can expect in the president's job plan before he unveils it on thursday. -- welcome back to weekend early edition. it is just about 7:28, september 3rd, labeled weekend. i am ann makovec. >> this weekend will be a nice one. lots of sunshine this afternoon in the inland locations. but a lost fog and including in the meantime as we look outside here at ocean beach. we will get sun breaks later in the afternoon and those inland spots warming up nicely. so on the whole, your weekend is looking pretty good. temperatures from the 60s in the coast line to the 70s along those bay shores and even seeing some 90s in those inland spots. i will give you a full forecast

in just a bit. a scientist who died in an explosion in menlo park yesterday has been identified. he's 56-year-old adrian martin. the blast happened yesterday at membrane technology and research. martin suffered cardiac arrest after the blast. firefighters tried to save his life but he died soon after. factor the blast. but they are fire officials found a leaking methane gas cylinder that may have been a factor in the blast but they are not sure if it was leaking beforehand. earlier, just after the explosion, employees ran into the chaotic scene. >> some had the wherewithal to try to secure some of the other hazards within the laboratory and then they drug that individual from the laboratory and addressed the other individual who had been blown clear of the laboratory. >> now a female co-worker was walking by the doorway when the force of the blast knocked her over and damaged her eardrum. investigators say the scientist who died had been transferring a mixture of methane, helium and nitrogen from one tank to another. forecasters say the storm could bring as much as 20 inches of rain in some areas. right

heavy rain from tropical storm lee is now pounding louisiana. forecasters say the storm could bring as much as 20 inches of rain in some areas. right now maximum winds are at 60 miles an hour. lee's center is expected to make landfall in louisiana this afternoon, and then move east from there. tropical storm warning flags are up from mississippi to texas. people there have been heeding warnings to be prepared. >> didn't think the storm would build up, you know, as strong as they talking about now, so just trying to get everything -- the boat out the water and the camp situated. >> a storm surge could raise water levels by between 2 and 4 feet in some areas. flood gates that were put in place after hurricane katrina have been lowered to protect new orleans. but the mayor has still declared a state of emergency there, as have the governors of louisiana and mississippi. >> no new jobs in august. that is the word -- word from the labor department on the latest unemployment numbers. it is the weakest showing in nearly a year. alexis christophorus with a

preview of the president's plan to create jobs. >> reporter: the stock and bond markets are closed for the labor day holiday. on friday stocks plunged after a weaker than expected unemployment report, renewed fears the economy could slip back into a recession. the dow slid 253 points. the nasdaq gave back 66. treadlers have plenty to look forward to when they return to work. president obama will introduce a plan for creating jobs and boosting economic growth. and rare address to a joint session of congress this week. he's expected to call for more investments in the country's infrastructure, and a possible extension to the 2011 payroll tax credit, to boost consumer spending. the obama administration has estimated that unemployment will average about 9% next year. the rate was 7.8% when obama took office. the white house office of management and budget projects overall, economic growth of only 1.7% this year. if you're in the market to buy car, you have a few more hours to get in on what might be the best deals of the year. the end of summer marks the

place but after the state blocked drugas on state properties oakland stepped up. they say promoting marijuana with a street fair is good for the city. >> we're bringing in 20,000 visitors who will spend money and lots of people being employed to put this on. >> reporter: oakland has three medical marijuana facilities. lots of underground pot clubs. a voter approved policy that makes pot possession the lowest police priority and a city tax on marijuana. >> i think it is a sign of how far we have come politically that we can have a smoking area right here in the plaza, in front of oakland city hall. >> but is oakland ready for that? >> this is not a smoke-in. this is not a hippie, haight- ashbury event. it is a serious event. there will be a lot of work shops and vendors for the industry there. if someone thinks they are just going to smoke a joint, that's not going to happen. if it does, the expo will be shut down. >> reporter: medical marijuana advocates may be disappointed but it doesn't appear that oakland is quite ready to allow pot smoking on the city hall

steps. in oakland, don knapp, cbs 5. a boat rental shop that has been at stowe lake in san francisco for generations is now going out of business. the owner's grandfather started it back in the 1940s, but right after labor day, he plans to finally shut down. the city has been urging him to do so to make way for more commerce. a new vendor will pay the city more money and renovate the boathouse there. there are plan force cafe and new fleet of row boats and paddle boats. it is a pretty little area to go boating, and -- if you don't mind a little fog today. could you go out and do so. >> exactly. it should mixingu mix out pretty early on this morning and reveal some sunshine. and you would see if you're headed to the park today, it will be beautiful. particularly in inland spots. the bay will see sun, too. already seeing a glimmer of hope in our shop from mount vaca. we will look at our forecast coming up. and still to come, as freshmen juggle new classes and a new campus, smart spending tips for them to stay in the

week's jefferson award winner wanted to do something to support young people in her hometown, she didn't have to look when this week's jefferson award winner wanted to do something to support young people in her hometown, she didn't have to look far for help. at kate kelly reports she turned to other oakland natives and together they are helping students tackle each new school year. >> binder paper, pencils, back packs, just some of the items needed for oakland students going back to school. and these volunteers are helping make sure hundreds of kids get everything they need. leading the effort is oakland native nyesha de wit. she knows just how important academic support can be. >> it can be frustrating and daunting for young people and their parents to overcome challenges you experience in high school. but i feel if we really engage them at a younger age and start to let their parents know some

of the pitfalls and challenges they could experience, they could overcome some of that and achieve. >> nyesha dropped out of school in the 10th grade. but when she was fired from a job for not having her high school diploma she got serious. got her ged and with the help of some people who believed in her, she graduated from berkeley. >> someone gave back to me when i was younger. it was a wonderful woman who believed in me and saw that i was worthy of the opportunity to get such a beautiful education. >> today nyesha has her ph.d. >> despite her personal success, nyesha has never forgotten where she started. that is why she created oakland natives give back. >> reporter: for the fourth year her organization has sponsored a back to school rally attacked city hall. handing -- -- at oakland city hall hospital handing out back packs, bus passes for transportation and encouraging students to stay in school. >> i think it is important to pour into kids what you expect to get out of them. i think this is a good start to show that we give back to our community.

we care for them so that may be -- maybe they will want to achieve and do better. >> tameka buckley grew up here but now lives in texas. she returns to volunteer with nyesha and her organization to make a difference. >> once you graduate and go to college and have your own obstacles, you can choose to be part of the problem and part of the solution. i think it is wonderful to be part of the solution. >> we have people from antioch, stockton, driving in to support the day. people who are from here, from this community who are natives, really care, and that we do have what it takes in us to give back to our community. >> reporter: this year oakland natives gives back, distributed over a thousand back packs. and working with the school district and the city of oakland, they connect families to local resources while reconnecting volunteers with their hometown. >> our duty -- it should be our privilege to serve the community and give back to the place where we were reared. >> reporter: so for inspiring others to look homeward in an effort to help oakland students succeed, this week's jefferson

nearly 20- thousand people are expected to sample homemade greek meal opa as they say. the 41st annual greek festival kicks off today. people will sample home made greek meals, dancing and entertainment for all ages. running through labor day, going on in belmont. the weather is going to be absolutely lovely for that. the difference between need and want, that is something a lot of us are still trying to figure out. and it is a familiar lesson for parents teaching kids about the value of money.

we're looking at smart spend tips. the offer of "the mom book county" and ceo of momscentral.com. everybody is going to getting supplies from kindergarten to college. what kind of tips do you have for parents? >> the first thing is to realize that it is very difficult for us to talk to our kids about money. there is a recent survey that came out and said we trust schools to talk to our kids, even about sex, but when it comes to financial responsibility and safe spending we give the schools ds and fs. it means we have to start at early ages, really tuning kids in to what is the -- i mean, kids will say i need everything, right? sometimes you're overwhelmed. but even at young ages to give them -- start with allowancessen and to give them a sense of what the value of that money is. and -- and it is often even with young kids you say okay you have a dollar in the grocery store, and then they say i don't want that cookie, a dollar? that -- i guess i don't want

that then. >> right suddenly they realize they have to live without something else, if they go with a over b. the problem for a lot of parents now is that you're dealing with -- the clothes and whatnot but also dealing with technology. that's really changed. i mean, when i was younger i wasn't asking my parents for an ipad but they are using these things in kindergarten. >> we're raises digital native. they are used to electronics. kids in high school with laptops to younger kids who have cell phones so they can call us. one thing that get more complicated as kids get older. we really need to think about as our kids go, what is really needed, and what is extra. and also, a lot of kids are shopping online. so one of the things i did. i have a 17-year-old who is a senior in high school, and who is driving, much to his mother's chagrine. and my daughter is in college. so what i did is -- i really need to talk to them about credit cards. because i wanted my son to have a -- emergency back-up, if he's driving and needs a tow or he

decides that i -- he find a pair of jeans at old navy that he wanted to buy -- >> and he's in college, too, where that stuff starts getting pushed on people. >> that's exactly right. my daughter -- i really set them down. what i ended up doing, we want to teach our kids along with spending, safe credit card use. so i got them each a credit card, tied to -- in this case, my american express, charge card, and so it was tied to my gold account. what i did is i set limits for you guys. for my daughter i said okay i will start with $150 because i know you have to buy books the first week but then here is what sort of your electronic allowance is. and let's talk about -- because you can set online and manage it because i want to make sure not only do you understand spending and not overspending, but also especially when kids are starting at age 18, they can build their own credit record. when they are trying to rent an apartment or buy a car later on, they actually have to understand this. and it -- it was interesting. it was awkward sitting down with my kids and -- they are

like, okay, we're having "the talk." i am like yes, the talk is about your spending. >> that sounds easier than the birds and the bees. >> the question i guess when it comes to college, i mean, there's the common perception of the starving college student. that is a rite of passage for college students to not have a lot of money. as parent, how do you determine how much to give them? >> that is so when we grew up. we were the starving college students. >> they don't go through that any more? >> they don't. they -- because we're so child centric and we love our kids, we're often -- we feel like the human atm machine. it is like but mom, mom, i mean, i'm going to have no friends if i don't have this pair of jeans. everyone else has a laptop, do you want me to -- i'm going to get bad grades. it is clear. it is clear to me. with the economy being that kids cannot get jobs as easily, we're often trying to really help them understand what does it mean to work. what does it mean -- no, you
