through a menlo park tech good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. the day after an explosion ripped through a menlo park tech research company, officials have identified the scientist who was killed in the blast. the building is now offlimits. an indication of the intensity of the explosion. don knapp is at membrane technology in menlo park. don? >> reporter: that's right, ann. just a day after the explosion, it still remains a mystery. the building inspectors from menlo park have red tagged the building and cal osha considers it a crime scene. there are red tags on all of the doors of this menlo park building and it will remain through the holiday weekend. an indication of the unknown extent of the damage from an explosion here friday afternoon. >> a very big boom. just one single boom.

that's all i heard. >> reporter: the blast came reportedly as researcher adrian martin mixed three gases, methane, helium and nitrogen for a laboratory project here at membrane laboratory and research in menlo park and one of the tanks ruptured according to the fire department protection chief and killing martin and tossing a female scientist in an adjacent corridor. >> she was basically near the door and the pressure from the explosion, almost blown her out of the door, which is a good thing because it knocked her out of the laboratory. >> some workers were rushing in to help. >> reporter: some had the where.all to secure the area, and they drug the individual from the laboratory and addressed the person who was blown clear of the laboratory. it was a very brave thing for them to do and they care for each other enough to do that. >> kelly ferguson, city council member, came by to pay her respects and show appreciation for the technology industry. >> i would say these companies, these startups bring jobs to the

local area. and are an important economic engine that hires our engineers and scientists. >> reporter: the unidentified female scientist suffers eardrum pain and taken to stanford hospital. adrian martin and his wife had come from romania in search of a better life for themselves and their 17-year-old daughter, a piano student. >> we are trying to make sure that she has everything she needed in order to pursue her career in music. that's what she wanted to do. from a very young age. >> reporter: it was after midnight early today, this morning, when gas had dissipated enough for investigators to walk through the building. they could see that two laboratories were extensively damaged, as were several offices. it will be certainly a while before this company gets back in operation. ann? >> don knapp in menlo park, thank you. well, firefighters in southern california are getting the upper hand on a wildfire in the san bernardino national

forest. the fire broke out yesterday near hesperia on the center divider of interstate 15 in the kajon pass. ann sterling on what was lost. >> reporter: evacuations were lifted late this afternoon. >> i was relieved. yeah, i was really relieved to get home. >> reporter: richard and julie peltier were forced to evacuate yesterday when the hill fire came dangerously close to their home. >> just over the next ridge. so they got really close. we could see the flames from the house. >> i've never seen so many fire crew in one spot ever, you know. i mean they were everywhere. >> reporter: the fire started friday afternoon, in the cajon pass and quickly jumped interstate 15. it didn't take long for the flames to burn through the chaparral and threaten homes. two homes were damaged. two homes destroyed. at this ranch, several animals were trapped in their pens. today, animal control officers spent hours at the ranch, and they say more than 60 animals

died, but a few survived. >> unfortunately, yes, it is a very tragic scene. the owner had numerous animals, sheep and rabbits and i understand some dogs. there was a bull here. the bull is still here. the bull is still alive. there are a number of sheep that are still alive and unfortunately he did suffer a great loss of many of his animals. >> reporter: firefighters say hot temperatures and the wind were the biggest challenges today. the fire is now 60% contained. but it only takes seconds for hot spots to flare up. >> people should realize that a lot of the homes that were in the path of the fire, the ones that had good clearance around their homes suffered very little if no damage at all. >> that was ann sterling reporting. >> reporter: the san rafael man beaten unconscious in a rest room during the 49ers/raiders game at candlestick park is now talking about the slow response in getting help. >> people didn't respond fast enough to where if it was even

more intense, i think my life could have been taken in a second because it wasn't quick enough. >> the 26-year-old who does not want to be identified blames a lack of security. the emergency room worker also believes because his condition is improving, the search for a suspect has cooled off. now, here is a sketch of the man police are looking for. he is described as is a mow samoan 6'3", and long curly hair and pony tail and sports a goatee and anyone with information is asked to call san francisco police. several new security measures are going into place today at candlestick park to make sure football fans are safe. it comes in the wake of the violence with the 49ers/raiders game two weeks ago. today, cal is playing fresno state at candlestick and among the safety measures, security sweeps. additional staff is also stationed inside the stadium, and in the parking lot. and the uniformed and plain clothes police will now patrol the rest room.

during the battle of the football teams, two men were shot in the parking lot and a man was beaten inside the rest room. something that no one imagined. pot smokers lighting up from front of city hall. part of the nation's first-ever marijuana street fair. as anne makovec explains, it isn't just one big pot party. there is a message behind the event. >> oakland really is the first place that has the medical cannabis movement and it makes the most sense to have it here. >> it is billed as the nation's first cannabis street fair, right in the heart of oakland. >> this is great. are you kidding? like-minded people coming to give information and to provide structure and information. >> it is also a novel place to legally light up. right next to city hall. >> why else would you come here? for all the fun. >> reporter: the city of oakland seems to be somewhat aware that the festival is raising eyebrows. in fact, the organizers told us we were strictly forbidden from taking any pictures of people smoking pot with the background

of city hall. >> we want to respect people's right to use their constitutionally afforded right to medicate with medical cannabis. but we want to do so in a time, place, manner, restriction that allows them to go off to the left. >> reporter: in the blocked off streets surrounding city hall, colorful characters and products. >> this is black magic odor barrier bag, and it is for your delicate contents. >> reporter: the only thing not allowed for sale, pot itself. >> absolutely. because we have a lot of other products that we're allowed to sell. the only thing i can't sell is the seed. the seeds we're taking orders for and fill those orders later. >> reporter: and the only people allowed to smoke in the designated area, people with bona fide doctor's recommendation. >> what is your prescription for? >> anxiety. actually, yeah. and it does help. definitely. for a test or something. >> reporter: doesn't pot make you paranoid? >> not at all. it fixes every problem for me. >> reporter: it allows my muscles to relax and it allows

of the florida panhandle. drew levinson reports on this super soaker of a storm. >> reporter: tropical storm lee is flooding parts of the gulf coast. forecasters predict it could dump up to 20 inches of rain. in new orleans, which sits below sea level, some streets are under water. but the city pumps are working. pushing the water into lake pontchartrain. for some, that is the problem. >> that is lake pontchartrain right there. the same level as my boathouse. >> reporter: this man wielding a toilet plunger spoke to the local cbs affiliate. >> besides trying to take matters in your own hands, what else are you doing today? >> i'm raising all the stuff in my boathouse trying to save it because i didn't expect it to get this high. >> reporter: so far lee's storm surge has not penetrated the levees protecting new orleans. six years ago, katrina's fury ripped apart some of those levees, flooding 80% of the city. they were rebuilt and appear to be holding. lee is wreaking ha jock in jean

lefitte louisiana with mandatory evacuations and with lee's drenching rains and floodwaters, emergency rescue crews are urging people to stay inside, off the roads and out of the water. >> we're from utah. we don't know any better. we don't know anybody to tell us we're crazy. so we will go out there and see if we can catch a few cat fish. >> reporter: the storm is expected to continue causing problems along the gulf coast through the weekend. drew levinson, cbs news. and still no sign this hour of a plan who disappeared while hiking yosemite national park. 69-year-old gene hall was last seen tuesday at the vogelsung high sierra camp. he was reported missing thursday when he did not return to his car. searchers are looking for him from the ground and helicopter. yosemite officials believe he may have climbed the peak during the hike but it is a popular but challenging trail. labor day weekend often equated with barbecues but other food festivals in the bay area. we will take you on the festival on the peninsula, known for its

mini- greek vacation in belmont. if you're not traveling this holiday weekend, how about a mini greek vacation in belmont? yup, the 41st annual greek festival at the greek orthodox church of the holy cross. food of course, the big attraction, and all of it made by churn -- church members. and greek art and crafts and music and dance. cooking lessons. that's what i would like. very cool. an the festival runs through monday. no complaints regarding the weather there. it looks like a beautiful day. >> it should be like that again tomorrow with more afternoon sunshine. >> lots of festivals and events around the bay and a festival in toledo and millbrae has a festival tomorrow afternoon. they will all be looking for afternoon clearing. after the morning low clouds give way to a mostly sunny day. and classic summer pattern continues here for your holiday weekend. we will see 60s at the beach. and upper 80s to low 90s across the inland areas, where things are a little warmer. but pretty close to seasonal

norms for this time of the year am and be advised the surf is up along the coast here. we're looking for the potential, or at least the high risk for rip current activity, large shore breaks, and waves. it is always a good idea to keep an eye on the waves when you're at the beach. today's high topped out in the upper 80s to low 90s across the interior. upper 70s and low 80s in the east bay. and across into the east bay hills. and then cooling as you would expect back to the city. 70 there. with upper 50s and low 60s at the beach. pacifica, 75. questionable at this point. but hey, if it makes you feel good, we will keep that on there. as we take a look at the fog retreating to the beach through the day, by midday, mostly clear through the area and the fog did not dissipate entirely nor will it this time of the year. looking for clear skies tonight and mostly cloudy by midnight and temperatures in the mid to upper 50s pretty much throughout the bay and tomorrow, low clouds will give way to mostly sunny

skies, for most locations. and with the peninsula and the beach in the mid-60s. and into the upper 80s to low 90s out across the interior. a stratus quo weather pattern holding here with a southerly surge of fog, maintaining an onshore push to keep the fog arn. little cooler air headed our way for the beginning of the week, and that will be the dominant weather feature here as once again the morning low clouds will give way to plenty of afternoon sunshine. no heat waves in sight at this point. but then the beginning of school is often the last shot at our heat wave activity. usually mid september. so there is still hope, kim. as we see for tomorrow, mid 80s to low 90s across the interior. into the upper 70s and low 80s in the east bay hills. and back on the peninsula again, we will look for mid-60s, with low 60s expected at the beach. across the north bay, a couple of degrees cooler than today. still in the mid to upper 80s there. a few low 90s as you head east. and the seven-day forecast, once again, it brings a bit of a cooldown in the area for the beginning of the week, and then

have to travel as far to play a top 10 last year, san jose state opened up its season in tuscaloosa. but this year, the spartans did not have to travel as far to play a top 10 team. the david shaw era is officially under way down on the farm. end of the first quarter, stanford up 10-0. stanford lines up but there is a fumble. and it sets up a cardinal inside the red zone. in on the first play of the second quarter, andrew lutz finds the tight end in the back of the end zone. the junior tight end is the go to guy. later in the second, stanford up 20-0. chase thomas comes up free up the middle and crushes matt falkner. henry anderson scoops up the fumble and makes the case to be the return man but he gets tripped up and falls inches short of the goal line. the cardinals offense turned the turnover into another touchdown.
