in one arrest, who got caught in the crossfire. and we've had a cool week all last week but finally we'll see sunshine and warmer temperatures. i'll tell you how hot we'll get, coming up. 7 a.m., saturday, september 17th. thanks for joining us. a federal investigation is underway right now in reno, nevada, the site of a horrific crash. a plane went down, seen by thousands of people, at least three are dead, more than 30 injured after that crash. now we're learning it might have been worse if not for last- second move by the pilot who did die in the accident. joe vasquez joins us from reno with the latest. good morning, joe. >> reporter: and many people here are calling that pilot, 74- year-old jimmy leeward, a hero for the split second decision to crash onto the tarmac in front of the vip box seats instead of into the grandstands where there would have been more cash wait a minutes.

more casualties. the seen is back that way. ntsb officials are conducting a formality investigation. watch and listen to this gut wrenching home video of the crash. the plane, a p-51 mustang, world war ii vintage, had a mechanical malfunction. authorities are reporting the pilot and two others are the only ones confirmed dead but that number is expected to rise. dozens were wounded. the plane burst into smithereens sending shrapnel into the crowd. witnesses described widespread

carnage, severed limbs and bodies flying through the air. >> the next thing i saw, a small fireball and shrapnel flying straight up in the air. at that time i turned my back. i turned around to protect my son and my daughter. >> it's a tragedy for all of us in this small family of air racing. our fans, those that are injured, the victims, those that are deceased, their families, the impacts are widespread. the emotional impacts of those here that witnessed it, we're all devastated. >> leeward was a veteran pilot, a movie stuntman, and was a fixture at the reno national championship air races. he performed here since 1975. they will have a small memorial for him this morning. meanwhile the reno air races have been cancelled. tens of thousands are in town to see the show, many are now trying to find loved ones. we're told emergency officials are overwhelmed fielding more than 150 phone calls of people reporting loved ones missing. that doesn't mean that many

a.m. on broadway. that's where officers found a wanted person. police say he first threatened them with a weapon and ran away. the officers fired at the suspect who was not hit but two bystanders were hit. the suspect is in custody. police are not saying much this morning. >> more bay area headlines, family and friends not giving up hope of finding the body of michelle lay. volunteers will search for her this morning. they say they want to bring her home for a memorial and good by. her former friend has been arrested for her murder. >> we know what caused an explosion and haz-mat situation in palo alto, a 9-year-old child was playing with pool chlorine tablets. the tuesday explosion forced an forced evacuation at the apartment complex. the crater cause the by the san bruno pipeline explosion will be filled in next week.

the blast left a large hole in the neighborhood that remained unfilled while the investigation into what happened was completed. some jobs were added, but more jobs were lost in california last month, the unemployment rate going up to 12.1% in august from 12% in july. the construction industry had the largest decrease with 7,000 jobs cut. california has the second highest unemployment rate in the country, after nevada. the california republican convention is underway this weekend, down in los angeles. michele bachmann was the keynote speaker last night. david ryan with how bachmann is trying to rally support, both political and financial. >> michele bachmann. >> reporter: sliding in the polls and fighting to prove she's a viable candidate, michele bachmann brought her quest for the republican nomination to los angeles where

weekend. a little warmup. we have details on what we can expect. looking decent. >> it is looking decent for the weekend and work week, finally a dose of summer after what seemed not like summer. cold conditions will change starting today. as we take a live look outside at conditions from mount vaca, the sun is up, low clouds this morning, and we're seeing fog at the coastline as well. the golden gate bridge, you can make out part of it this morning. better than the fog we saw this week. most of the view, some low clouds and fog in the inland locations, temperatures in the 50s for the most part. by this afternoon we're going to warm up nicely, squeezing out a few more degrees in the inland locations. mostly sunny actually at the coastline today, lots of sun at the bay shores, inland locations noticing the warmup. fog mixing out early. we see it pull back to the bay shores by 10:00 this morning

and by lunch time looking pretty clear and definitely by the time we hit our highs, 3:00, 4:00, a beautiful shot. we're going to see nice conditions for all the bay area today. 50s outside right now, 55 in mountain view, 56 oakland, napa at 55. this area of high pressure is building off the coast into the bay area that's going to bring us warmer conditions. this low is going to slide out out of the picture. we see a flat level ridge with a warming for the weekend and for next week we notice the warmup. northern california, those temperatures looking good throughout the rest of the area as well. 84 for sacramento, 62 eureka. fresno 86, lots of sunshine across the board. here in the bay area this is what you can expect for your highs. almost making it to 80 in palo alto. mid to upper 80-degree

from ipads to dvds to mobile apps. as parents, we've all broken that vow a few times. i sure have. the good news, it's not all bad. screen time can be entertaining and educational. like most things in life, the decisions you make about your child's media consumption comes down to two basic things. quality and quantity. and quality plays a huge role. this week, a new study published in the journal pediatrics revealed a few minutes of watching spongebob squarepants on nickelodeon appeared to have negative effects on executive function in 4-year-olds. in this study, kids who watch the fast paced cartoon for nine minutes is less well on test of attention and cognition than those who spent the same amount of time drawing pictures. they also did less well than kids who watched a more realistic but slower paced educational cartoon. here are a few common sense tips for balancing screen time

>> there is a new tool to fight graffiti tagging, it's available at an app store near you. the iphone application called graph city allows users to tag any place in the city of san francisco. the tag won't show up in real life but it shows up as a realistic interpretation on your phone. it can be shared with anyone around the world. a far cry from the city's traditional approach, but the san francisco arts commission is embracing the app as part of its antigraffiti street smarts program. >> i'm very confident we will help absorb some of the problem. >> our highest hopes would be to obviously decrease the amount of property that's defaced. >> the city admits they are skeptical that tagger will trade paint for iphone apps, but if tagging is about recognition, the app could mean sharing bragging rights all over the world cutting down on vandalism in the city. we shall see. the giants try to stay

plane. sandra hughes tells us a lot of witnesses saw that plane go down. >> an airfield in reno, nevada, is a debris field, a world war ii fighter plane, the galloping ghost, plunged into spectators and disintegrated on impact. >> it was going up at an impossible angle, slightly above vertical. twisted, turned, wham. >> it looked like he must have been pulling hard on the stick to get as far away from the stands as possible. >> the pilot was jimmy leeward, participating in the national championship air races. described as a car race in the sky. >> he started going up in front of me. i wondered how many people got hurt. >> officials call this a mass casualty event with several dozen injured, many critically. one helicopter on display was put in service bringing the injured to an area hospital.

the races attracted scrutiny in the past over safety concerns. four pilots were killed in 2007 and 2008. the races have been cancelled for the rest of the weekend. sandra hughes, cbs news. we have joe vasquez live in reno with more updates through outthe day and at 5:30 here on cbs 5. a wanted man is arrested and two people hurt following an officer-involved shooting in san francisco's north beach. it happened after 2:00 this morning on broadway. officers say they located a wanted person. they say first he threatened them with a weapon and ran away. the officers fired at that suspect, who was not hit, but two bystanders were hit with that gunfire. they will both survive. the suspect and his weapon are both in custody. police in san jose are looking for a man responsible for a one-man crime spree. here is the suspect seen in a

surveillance video at a gas station yesterday. police are not releasing his name, not willing to alert anyone who might be willing to hide him. he shot a man in the stomach in the willow glen air at a gas station and carjacked a woman at the plant shopping center. police have been doing door to door searches in the neighborhood of king and marbury roads. the carjacking victim, 51-year- old cindy ngyn is missing. so workers say they last heard from her after noon. police say the carjacker spotted her in a disabled 1998 white lexus es-300 at the shopping center. nguyen said she was stuck with a dead battery in a call and called again to say someone was helping her. by nightfall she was missing. the suspect was spotted driving

her stolen lexus. >> something transpired in the initial contact where the officers felt threatened and either in their defense or defense the public fired on the suspect. >> there are unconfirmed reports the suspect was firing out of the window of the vehicle. he was last seen in black pants, blue shirt and baseball cap with a white t on the front. new numbers show americans are not happy with congress. the job approval rating for both chambers is at historic lows. danielle nottingham has more. >> reporter: americans have had enough of the lawmakers. >> i don't think they are doing well. >> we should get rid of them. >> reporter: a poll shows 12% approve of the job lawmakers are doing in congress. it's heated moments like this during the dead ceiling debate

sunshine for everybody. temperatures warmer than what we saw the last couple days. >> we're having some microphone issues. >> here we go, mic on and good. we're on. the fog is fixing out, absolutely. my bad, you guys. we actually have will warm weather into the afternoon. highs today looking good. we'll see temperatures 5 degrees warmer than the past couple days and lots of blue sky. look at the shot. we're used to seeing fog. there's a little bit at the golden gate bridge but for most of you out the door a little bit of foggy conditions and a little bit of low clouds, conditions are mild in the 50s for the most part. and this afternoon shaping up nicely, temperatures getting closer to where we should be for this time of year. high 80s in some inland locations, so different than what we saw this last week, and fog mixing out earlier than what we saw in the week, stretching into the inland valleys, in the morning, but we'll see it pull back to the

you started noticing that you were maybe addicted to these things at what point? >> well, you know, it happened slowly and gradually like i remember three years ago thinking if i ever had lunch with someone and they pulled out a phone, god, that person is rude. >> it is rude! >> and now i've become that person. everyone has become that person. it was more -- i want to open a conversation with this film about what's the best part of technology, the worst part, what should we talk about and how can we harness this connectiveness in the 21st century for good. >> it is a new frontier and we're still learning. everybody is at different levels. >> we're all so busy all the time that we're not taking the opportunity to have a conversation. so the film looks at connectedness throughout history, and it's a personal story for me so i come at it

from boast perspective and would love for the audience to explore personally what it means globally. >> tell me about your personal journey. >> i have been looking at technology a long time. i was making a film about what it means to be connected in the 21st century. in the middle of production, my father who was a surgeon in the bay area was diagnosed with brain cancer and i was forced to look at connectedness from an emotional place. i was making a film and not exploring emotional connection. the more i got into it i realize all -- technology is just an extension of humans. it's an extension of us trying to connect and learn more. it's all the same thing. the film then started having the personal element. it's half memoir film and where

we're going to make it a better place. >> you have the information at your fingertips, but you're always engaged in -- for instance for myself, i wake up and i'm checking twitter and facebook for news. it's a lot of drama in your mind all the time. tell me about the pros and cons of being connected. >> since we finished making the film, my husband, who is a professor of robotics at berkley ken goldberg, and i obviously very wired, and we have two children, and we started taking technology -- one day a week we turn off from technology. >> not even checking e-mails? >> most people say are you using the phone. no, all screens goes down. friday night, the sun goes down, all screens go off. for 24 hours we're present in the moment. >> i like that. >> we can't act on every single thought we have and it's been life changing. that's one of the things i would love for people to

explore. what are the boundaries, when is it not appropriate to check your e-mail, good for your family, your state of mind to not act on every single thought you have. that's what you're doing, acting on every thought and exploring it. having one day a week every week where i'm not online has been life changing. the film wants people to talk about it. we're moving so quickly. let's have a conversation about what does it mean to be connected. we had our big premiers last night in san francisco at the landmark, berkley and mill valley. it will be playing all week but opening weekend is very exciting. >> yeah. >> it was great last night. >> so tell me when you're talking about doing these sort of detox days, what is the hardest thing for you? >> it's not hard. it's hard when i thought we were going to try it, it was hard, but now you rush towards friday night. i'm so excited to have this one day. what's the one day you want to feel alone? it's saturday. four days and one. time slows down when you unplug. saturday night i can't wait to

go back on. i reappreciate technology in a new way, so i just think it's -- technology is fantastic. we're going to be alive and we're going to see all the mind on the planet connected. what's the potential? how can we solve our problems? the film is trying to get a conversation started. theaters, mill valley, san francisco and berkley everyone is ready to talk about it. as a filmmaker, people want to talk about it. it's great. >> sounds interesting. when can people check this out? >> come to the landmark or the sequoia or mill valley, the first weekend is great. >> congratulations. thanks for being here. we'll be right back. top
