the fifth. and it had chicken little running for cover where they saw a dead satellite falling down to earth. it is 7:00. the sun just came up saturday morning, september 24. thanks for joining us. we're starting out the first weekend of fall for you. >> exactly. first weekend and it's going to feel like the first weekend of fall too. a little cooler temperatures out there, actually a chance of seeing showers. some people might be seeing sprinkles right now. gorgeous shot outside here. some of the low clouds are in the pictures because of the system that's sitting off the coast and the temperatures are outside right now. pretty mild sitting in the 50s for the most part. over the high 40s as well. we'll be quite a bit cooler than yesterday. i'll tell you about that in just a little bit. >> all right issue thank you -- all right, thank you. they are in a fight this weekend. the democratic-controlled senate blocked the republican house bill yesterday. it would have provided a stop

gap funding plus aide for people affected by the natural disasters. they call for more than $1.5 billion in spending cuts. >> this is really not the time to say you're going to balance the budgets. >> they have another vote on disaster relief, not paid for, trying to say that the republicans are against people that have suffered. >> now on monday they will vote the vote. but they are in danger of running out of money on october 1. lots of questions, but for answers. they called to testify yesterday, they had nothing to say.

also yesterday, the state treasurer asked the state tax breaks. they received nearly $500 million last year and abruptly closed their doors last month. this time supporters want to delay the release of the court-related videos. they ruled the recordings of last year's trial on the gay marriage ban should be made public. they asked that judge to stay with his decision until an appeal would be heard. more fall out over the bart system. it is now the subject of the state capitol hearing on

tuesday. bart police have been focusing this protest since an officer shot and killed a man in july. now assemblyman plans to hold a hearing on the training policies and procedures of bart police. the general manager, police chief and police auditor will be attending. they are good for the environment and they save money, but the the energy- efficient street lights could also be good for criminals. robert lyles on the bright idea that could curve the escalating violence in oakland. >> reporter: it's a 25-foot tall black eye above 34th avenue, but this street light isn't just unsightly. >> there are places in the city that are simply too dark. there isn't sufficient lighting even to our minimum standards. >> reporter: the oakland city councilwoman says city street lights were dimmed about a decade ago to save energy and light pollution, but she says the move may have saved money, yet created the perfect stage in east and west oakland for criminal activity to take center stage. and along international from

64th to 80th avenue, they recorded their 67th murder victim this year, labeling these areas hot spots. >> i'm saying have them go out in hot spots and in east and west of oakland. look to see if all the hot spots have at least minimum -- minimum lighting. >> reporter: what's done may have a hard time finding the light in east oakland. >> we spoke with several residents here at 34th. none of them wanted to speak on camera. why? because the minute we turn off our tv lights, they are plunged back into darkness for criminals. >> reporter: they admit no study on whether or not poor lighting breeds crimes, but we found some of them are leery that bright lights will offer them any new sense of security. >> i don't know if new lighting

would be the effective thing. we need more personalized police in our neighborhoods. >> reporter: robert lyles, cbs5. now a study shows that street lights act as a natural surveillance. oakland is facing a $76 million budget deficit. and the officials there say that they just can't afford to turn up the lights right now. this morning sunny vale -- sunnyvale police are investigating a death found at the apartment complex here at the center. the woman having some sort of connection to the apartment where the child was discovered was reported climbing on to nearby 101 described. they are trying to determine the cause of death and the woman's possible involvement. hundreds turned up in san jose to remember the prominent bay area radio host.

over a 10-day span, he committed crimes. the 49ers are taking another step towards making their santa clara stadium a reality. starting today, they are filling 28 sales positions to sell season tickets at the new stadium, which doesn't exist yet. it is through an invitation- only job's fair. the new hires will sell premium seats at the nearly $1 billion proposed stadium. well, it's a story that had a lot of -- that had a lot of eyes on the sky. the dead satellite fell down over earth making a plunge over the pacific ocean. this is video of it reentering the atmosphere over los angeles. nasa says that the 3546 foot

satellite -- 35-foot satellite fell between 11:30 last night and 1:00 this morning. 28 pieces are expected to rain down somewhere, although nasa puts the chances of a person getting hit at one out of 3,200. nasa now plans for the end times of its newer satellites. thinking of things falling in the sky, we have -- falling from the sky, we have a chance of rain? >> yes. you might be seeing sprinkles. drizzles at the coastline with plenty of fog out there. you can't even see the top in this shot. and a cool weekend in stored as well. i'll tell you what those temperatures will be like when we come back. and also the oakland a's on the silver screen. brad pitt's new film hits theaters this weekend. still to coast, jonah hills will be chatting with us as well. i'm allen martin in sacramento. who qualifies for cal benefits. a closer look coming up. ,,,,,,

10 minutes after 7:00 and food policy advocates estimate that the federal food assistance program that used to be called food stamps. a closer look at what cal fresh food assistance, the new name for it and why some people, they could benefit. >> reporter: she's been feeding her family first using foot stamps, now using a cal fresh ebt card for about four years. >> so we have been doing this for four years. it's still a struggle to keep food every day for our kids. that's why i the got the benefits -- that's why i got the benefits. >> reporter: advocates say that if she is considered one of the working poor. and california is last among states in signing up the

working poor. only 35% sign up. >> it's difficult to access the program if it is, but asking your employer time off to go through the process to get fingerprinted. something that many lower-waged workers are not able to do. >> reporter: they have long debated who gets cal fresh and how they spend the money. that debate is far from over. >> fingerprinting, having your photo taken, filling out the paperwork, all part of their effort to cut down on fraud. food policy advocates acknowledge that some people do try to cheat the system and succeed, but they maintain that california's application process is overly cumbersome. >> but overtime we have been able to develop ways that are less paper reliance that don't require trips to the office. >> reporter: seniors are another group that tends to get left out. >> there's a safety net. the safety net has been weakened overtime and many seniors are finding it

you can see a change in temperatures that are dropping significantly as we make our way into sunday, but today we'll see it as well. a gorgeous shot outside. some of the low clouds are in the picture. fog in our forecast this morning as well. as can you are stepping outside, if you're at the coastline, seeing a little bit of that drizzle, a little bit of a cloudy start as well. patchy fog in our inland locations. temperatures are sitting in the 50s. pretty mild right now to start. also breezy inside the bay shores that we will be seeing mostly sunny skies. inland spots, you'll see some sunshine with the temperatures a whole lot cooler, only making it to the mid-80s. so we saw some 90s even yesterday. and even bigger changes because of the precipitation in the forecast. this system, spinning off the coast, that's bringing some moisture to parts of southern california. you're already seeing the sprinkles out there. we will definitely see a lot more wet weather and a chance of wet weather as we make our way into sunday. that's kind of the low that's dropping down from the pacific

northwest. that's going to pump more cool air, pumping and bringing us a chance to see some showers. best chance north of the golden gate tomorrow. endorsing some sunshine for northern california. 89 in sacramento. fresno in the mid-90s. 69 for this area. seeing mostly cloudy conditions today. here in the bay area, your highs will look like this. 70 for hayward, topping out at 80. we are squeezing 83 degrees here. and mid-70s today. cooler in san francisco at 66. 74 for kent. oakland, almost breaking that 70-degree mark. so as you take a look at your weekend forecast, we'll be cooling down quite a bit. making your way into sunday. we're actually going to be warming up to temperatures that are bumping back up by tuesday and wednesday. we're actually going to see the readings in the low 90s in our

shourd a ring made from shirt threads. boy will they have some stories to tell their kids if they end up going that route. short films with a powerful message. that's just one of the ways that the 11th annual luna fest film festival raising awareness about their issues. the festival debuted about a new documentary about the rugby team for women. the lady razorbacks, and stanforded grad student joining us -- stanford grad student joining us here. >> now tell us about the film. lady razorbacks. i don't know a lot about them. an upcoming sport that's new in the area? >> yes, men's rugby is established, but women's rugby is a growing area. the lady razorbacks is a part in that growth -- is a part in that growth. >> it is always difficult for the female teams breaking into traditional male sports. >> yes, it is very difficult. many of the women on the team are from the pacific islander backgrounds. so rugby is a very popular

sport in those cultures, but very traditional. these women, they are really breaking new grounds. and when i first, when i went to their first practice, i was just struck by how much fun they had and what a sense of area this was on the field. >> we are looking at film clips from your film right now. are you a rugby player too? >> i have played some rugby in my time, yes. i know how physically demanding it is. >> you had to do this for a class project, why did you choose them? why focus on them? >> sometimes it happens with documentaries. i had an idea i was so excited about. working so hard to make it happen and it fell apart. the day it fell apart. >> i hate when that happens. >> i went to a journalism class i was a part of. and a woman was doing a story about a real community space. and that was in danger of being shut down for the codeviolations.

there was just one line in that article where there was a woman that said you know, i used to weigh 340 pounds, i'm 34 years old, i have never played a sport in my life before, i started playing rugby and it has changed my life. i love sports. i lost 40 pounds, and i was like wow, what an incredible story to go from kind of athletically from 0 to 60. >> yes, absolutely. >> so now you decided to focus on the the whole team. i know that they have had a lot of economic problems with violence. how does that kind of play into the team? >> well, i think that the team is a part of a community effort. and to really transform the community and to build positive spaces where people can come together, where they can empower themselves and where they could build positive spaces within their own community. i think that's why it's such a wonderful team. you know, especially for women that have fewer of those athletic outlets.

action this morning, the giants are eliminated from the nl west race losing to the now division champion arizona diamondbacks. kim coyle with more on sports. >> reporter: good morning everyone. if the giants lose any one of their five remaining games or the braves win one of theirs, the giants are officially eliminated from the playoffs. arizona's rookie comes through with a big two-out hit. a 2-run triple 3-1 diamondbacks. all three runs were charged to matt cain who once again, deserves better. j.j. comes in on the 9th, picking up his 44th save. arizona beats the giants 3-1 and for the fifth time in franchise history, the diamondbacks are nl west champs. weeks finally hit his career home run yesterday. weeks leads off the game with a homer off weaver. the a's beat the angels 3-1. with the win the rangers

clinched the al west. they have traveled all the way to florida to take on st. thomas. it'll be a long flight home for the spartans, committing four turnovers and lose 30-6. finally adam scott shot a 65 to take a one-stroke lead at the tour championship through two rounds. that's a look at sports. we'll see you tonight at 5:30. well, the oakland a's is taking hollywood by storm. "moneyball," hits the box office this weekend. they debuted the film in oakland on monday, the star- studded event. the film covers how an a's general manager transformed the team, despite a very tiny budget. his computer-generated statistics use it to draft the ballplayers. >> during the film, i did love you in this film. i loved the movie, i love jude because i have never seen you

acting this straight. and so for you what do you have to bring to this game? was it different when you do comedy? >> yeah. this is a really unique time for me in my career in a special opportunity because as an actor, i learn how to be a dramatic actor as much as i wanted to be a comedic actor. i had all the success doing comedies, i really love those movies, but it is really important for me to also try to do other kinds of movies. this is just a wonderful opportunity to do that. so to have my introduction to people as the most dramatic be this really great huge movie with brad pitt and it is very surreal. i feel very lucky. >> was it easy for you to tap into your inner geek? are you that guy at all? >> i think the way that my character is about baseball and statistics, you know. it was fascinating because i'm

midnight friday. it pays for the disaster aid by trimming $1.5 billion from a program that promotes new research on fuel-efficient vehicles. democrats say that those cuts will cost jobs and should not be tied to helping fema. >> this is really not the time to try to say we're going to balance the budget on the backs of those that had been affected by natural disasters. >> reporter: the g.o.p. senator says the real fight isn't over the funding bill. >> this is a political ploy, trying to save the republicans or against people that have suffered. >> reporter: the government runs out of money october 1. homeland security secretary warns that unless congress passes a plan, fema's disaster fund will likely run dry some time next week leaving no money for the victims of this year's tornadoes, wildfires, and floods. danielle nottingham, cbs news,

washington. lots of questions, but few answers on capitol hill about the federal loans to fremont solyndra company. >> yes. >> and that was that. now yesterday, the state treasurer asked that the states tax break for the solar companies be suspended. solyndra received nearly half a billion dollars to launch that solar power plant last year. just after reporting a surge of sales in their solar panels. nearly half of the 1,100 employees laid off when solyndra shut down attended a job fair yesterday. they are looking to fill 1,000 companies. many of them are solyndra

competitors. they say their skills are transferable to other high-tech industries. hundreds turned up in san jose to remember the prominent bay area radio host. family and friends gathering in the parking lot where she was carjacked and kidnapped last week. she was later found shot to death, allegedly by this man paul castillo. he spoke not of sadness, but of hope. i encourage each and every one of you not to be saddened by the tragedy that has struck here. instead, i want you to see the beauty in what she has created. this morning, police are investigating the mysterious death of the 2-year-old boy. officers found the child's body on friday afternoon when they responded to a call at the

apartment complex. a woman was reported climbing on to the fence of highway 101. investigators are trying to determine the cause of death and the woman's involvement and what it may have been. an oakland city councilwoman wants to turn up the lights in order to fight crime in oakland. the lights were dimmed a decade ago to save energy. these dimmer conditions are inviting for criminals in east and west oakland, which includes international boulevard that is on the rise for murder this year so far. >> studies indicate that the ample street lighting can help reduce crime, but oakland may not be able to afford the

on their faces and their body language, you know, it says it all. it just, you know, it's a great feeling. >> reporter: he packs truckloads of donations into his garage. he has not seen his garage empty in seven years when his then 11-year-old son was playing in a baseball camp. donating his old cleats to his coach and ended up taking over and expanding the coach'sdistributions. jeff calls his father his role model. >> he is actually coordinating things, you know? and just always making a friendly phone call down the street because what is the worse they are going to say, no, i don't need it? and so he is a great man to look up to. >> reporter: he has only two requests of the recipients. >> number one, don't write me a thank you letter, you're too busy. number two, get the gear to the kids. so for equipping 1,000 young people playing baseball, this week, the award goes to jeff

humphreys. sharon chin, cbs5. a dead satellite fell to earth overnight, making a fierying plunge somewhere over the pacific ocean. here is some video of it reentering the atmosphere, the little light on your screen, just over los angeles. nasa says that the 35-foot satellite fell between 11:30 last night and 1:00 this morning. another 26 pieces are expected to rain down somewhere. nasa now plans for the opened times of its new -- the end times of their newer satellites, minimizing the risk of people. >> what does it mean for control reentering and specifically on earth or parking in what they call a graveyard. a little bit further away from the earth where they could orbit for centuries. >> nasa puts the chances of the chunk of the satellite hitting an actual person at 1 out of 3,200. and again, it is all expected to land in the pacific ocean.

i mean do you need to lie at that point? >> i think that at some points early on, yeah, i would make up a boyfriend or lie or join in and then i couldn't do it anymore. i just wanted to be neutral and laugh along, but i became very segregated here mentally in terms of, well, my personal life and my work life. i just kept them very separate. >> okay. that is something that a lot of critics who want this in place, they think that's the way it should be that we shouldn't even be talking about sex in the military. is that realistic? >> yes, definitely, it's your life, your orientation. everyone talks about, you know, their relationships and their families in day-to-day conversations. that's what it is all about. they will talk about what they did this weekend with a picture of their spouse or their family on their desk. it's a part of who we are and how we integrate and interact with one another. >> which is important when it comes to that out on the field? >> yes, absolute liv. you're with these people 24/7. you were trying to build these relationships. i actually found out after i came out while i was in the

military, able to be open in the military that, you know, my relationship spectrum, you got stronger because i didn't need to pretend i was anything. and it became much more of an integrated unit. >> how did you feel at that point is this >> after coming out, people, well first of all, you know, it was not a huge surprise. mostly coming out stories. >> right. >> yeah. >> but actually i was choosing the respect and i think that they responded as to how you act yourself. so i try to remain professional and maintain friendships. people kind of responded. >> all right, let's take a look at the clips from the republican presidential debate last thursday. you probably saw this clip. it was requested from an audience member. check it out. >> do you choose to make the progress for the gays and lesbians in the military? >> yes. i would say any type of sexual activity has absolutely no place in the military. >> and first, we have the

booing at that point. what was your reaction to that? >> no surprise that you have heard this before. >> well, you know, this type of a venue, i thought it was very disappointing. i mean, people are over fighting in iraq and afghanistan for our freedom. they deserve our respect. and to boo them, to boo a service member, i think, it's just incredibly disrespectful regardless of the topic and what it is. so i was disappointed, angry, i just felt like, you know, it was, well, mean spirited overall. >> and your reaction to the answer on that, you know, whether he's going to end up the president or somebody else, the fact that somebody, they could overturn this some day after all the progress that's been made? >> they never really answered the question. theyed ask about the follow up -- they asked about the follow up. what will you do with people like the soldier who have already come out? are you going to force them back in? they said no.

what can we expect for tomorrow night? >> she is definitely feeling like a new woman. and she's a little more confident in her stuff and feels a little better about her stuff after that night. >> so are we going to be seeing different things from your character throughout the season or very similar? because you know this is all leaving her husband. actually, i don't know. does she leave her husband yet? there's a lot going on in the show. >> there is so much going on. the great thing about this show, it has a fantastic political backdrop. and that mirrors this law backdrop. and the middle is a family that's torn apart. so it is such great high drama, but basically what's going to happen is now that my husband is back in a state's attorney office, he's no good without me and it turns out i'm no good really without him in terms of my career. because as long as my husband is in the state's attorney office, i'm very valuable to my law firm. it will be an interesting season, especially because at the core of all of this are the children that she has to set an
