nothing. >> in my view, this entire fire drill was completely and totally unnecessary. >> last night, the senate passed a stopgap measure to fund the government through november. the two sides had been fighting over a bill that includes disaster relief funds. but it wasn't a bipartisan compromise that ended the standoff. it was an announcement by fema saying it didn't need the extra money offer all. republicanes and democrats have been fighting for weeks over the extra funding. the agreement will ensure there's no areas in need of assistance battered by hurricane irene and last week's tornados in missouri. the government will be able to run normally when the new budget year begins on saturday. it's not a done deal quite yet. the republican-controlled house needs to approve the bill.

there is still one issue, the house is on recess this week. so if the members can't agree to pass it on unanimous consent, lawmakers may be called back in to pass it. >> susan, we keep getting temporary bills and stopgap measures. will congress ever get to get on bigger issues? >> this doesn't bode well for all the issues, but that bipartisan committee is trying to get to find trying to find that $1.5 trillion in savings. if they end you up dead locking, there will be automatic cuts that start in in the 2013 year. >> we'll have to see how everything plays out. susan, thank you. president obama is pushing his budget proposal on a three-day western campaign swing. he travels from california to colorado this morning at a los angeles fund-raiser last night. the president was interrupted by a heckler. the president said he agreed and turned back to discussing his

from now. it has been twice delayed and it is expected to be quite the scene here. more than two years after michael jackson's death, the man accused of causing his drug overdose will go on trial. today, opening statements begin in the involuntary man slaughter case of dr. conrad murray. >> i told the truth and i have faith the truth will prevail. >> reporter: prosecutors will claim the doctor was negligent in administering the drug at jackson's home. >> it's an ongoing thing. he didn't develop it over the last couple of days before he died. >> defense attorneys will try to prove michael jackson administer ed the dosage to himself.

>> jackson media and fans are expected to merge on the courthouse. the jury will not be sequestered. choreographer and director kenny ortega worked with the singer on his comeback tour and will take the stand as the prosecution's first witness. jackson's family, who wanted murray charged with murder will be in the front row. >> your honor, i am an innocent man. >> reporter: it's still unclear whether murray himself will testify. if convicted, he could face up to four years in prison and lose his medical license. and in the last few months, the judge has denied a number of different defense requests, including one to have jackson's former doctor testify. the defense wanted him to testify to prove that jackson was addicted to drugs. >> what do we know about the jury in this case? >> you know, the jury is a reflection of los angeles. about half hispanic, half are

1941. it's about 300 miles southwest of ireland. for 70 years, the ship has sat upright on the sea bottom nearly three miles down, deeper than the titanic. it holds 240 tons of pure silver. more than $200 million. recovering begins in the spring. i've got dibs on that. while cbs money watch doesn't have sunken treasure, we do have ashley morrison. ashley, good to see you this morning. >> good morning. thank you. european markets rebounded today. tokyo's nikkei gained 3%. hong kong's hang seng jumped 3.5%. the dollar slipped against the euro and the yen. today, wall street gets the latest on home prices and consumer confidence. on monday, stocks had their best day in three weeks. the dow showed up 272 points to close back above 11,000 while the nasdaq rose 33. uncle sam is taking his first

step out of the housing market. within a week, the federal government will lower the size of its home loans it will guarantee. it will mean higher costs and bigger down payments for many home buyers. the government currently supports a staggering 90% of all new mortgages. s&p could be in the cross hairs of the s.e.c. the securities and exchange commission is considering civil action against the firm for 2007 ratings of mortgage investments that turned out to be worthless. s&p consistently gave good bargains to the mortgage backed securities whose demise contributed to if not started the 2008 financial crisis. supermarkets are bagging self-serve checkouts. chains nationwide are ditching the do it yourself option when study after study shows shoppers preferred human cashiers. cashiers last year went through checkout lanes down from 22% three years ago. those shoppers surveyed say they

just like the human experience. and the "jersey shore" is going to have to pay up. the new jersey governor chris christie has vetoed the subsidy the raeltd reality show had applied for. the request outraged lawmakers. the governor agrees that the show hurts the state's image. no worries, terrell, i know it's your favorite show. production will not be affected. >> thank you. i can actually go on with the morning now. i feel so much better. ashley, thank you so much. appreciate it. while we're talking about actors and actresses and reality tv stars, actress lesha hailey is complaining about being kicked off a southwest airlines flight. she says she and her girlfriend were escorted off a plane after kissing on the plane. southwest airlines said behavior was the issue, gender had nothing to do with it.

dallas got a come-from-behind win on monday night football. trailing by a point in the fourth quarter, tony romo marked the cowboys 64 yards downfield, seth up dan daley's winning 40-yard field goal, his sixth of the game. dallas won, 18-16. speaking of injured quarterbacks, colts peyton manning could return in december. the indianapolis team owner jim hurst sent a tweet monday. he said there's an outside chance he might play late season. there was a mixed message, though. earlier at a private breakfast, it was indicated the neck injury would keep manning out the rest of the season. in baseball, the red sox and rays now tied in the american league wild card race. to baltimore we go, robert en dino hit a long drive to center fie field. he dropped it. baltimore beat boston, 6-3. the red sox have lost two games in a stunning september collapse. meanwhile, johnny damon is

government shutdown. the house, which is on recess this week, must agree to that. opening arguments scheduled today in the trial of dr. conrad murray, charged with man slaughter in the death of michael jackson. prosecutors say murphy gave jackson a lethal amount of a powerful pain killer. murray says he is innocent. now on a health care crisis. a growing drug shortage, including drugs to treat cancer. 15 people have died in as many months because of a shot fall. now the fda is investigating. kendra hughes. >> reporter: 56 y50er8d-year-old marsha goodman was supposed be treated with the drug doxil, but the drugstore ran out. goodman had to take an alternative drug and eventually found more doxil. health care providers told the fda on monday it's a medication crisis. more than 200 drugs are in short

supply, most of them used by hospitals. the medicine is mostly generic and the fda says drug shortageses have tripled in the past five years. >> we've had much more consolidation of manufacturers of generic drugs. we've had much more reimbursement pressure on generic drugs. and we've had the emergence of many more gray market vendors for both participants and causes of the drug shortage problem. >> more than half of the hospitals respond to go a drug shortage survey admit using so-called gray market vendors for companies other than normal wholesalers. in one case, a high pressure drug normally priced at $25 was being offered by gray market vendors for $1,200 a dose. fda officials worried about the consequence of the gray market. >> the dangers would be how was the drug stored? where does the drug come from? while the government can't force companies to make drugs, they say they could help a lot more if they were notified by hospitals or drugmakers when

soaring to a perfect parachute landing last weekend. he called it the greatest flight of his life. glad it wasn't the last flight. one thing this morning that could help put america back to work is boosting exports in the country. how about selling chopsticks to china? a town in south central georgia is doing just that. >> reporter: every week, this factory turns out 10 million disposable chopshiks sold in china. america's georgia, a down desperate for these 80 new jobs. >> i thought there was nothing here, vacant building, vacant building, vacant building. it's a sad situation around here. >> reporter: david hughes and his partner started georgia chopsticks last may. local leaders were skeptical. >> they were looking to hire folks. then it just went on. >> reporter: what seemed absurd, selling chopsticks to the chinese, turned out to be the perfect business model.

the chinese use 45 billion disposable wood chopsticks a year, but is running low on lumber. south georgia has forests of poplar and sweetgum trees, ideal for chopsticks. around america, closed factories left plenty of people looking for work. >> what kind of response did you get? >> we had to stop them from coming. there were like 400 coming in two days. >> for how many jobs? >> 50 then. >> this county's unemployment rate is greater than 13%, more than four points higher than the national average. this building was an abandon bumper factory and most of these employees had been out of work for two or three years. ricky hart is making minimum wage now after two years without a paycheck. his family of six lost their apartment and moved in with relatives. when your friends ask them what you're doing and you tell them, what's their reaction? i tell them we're making chopsticks. they look at me and laugh.
