steve jobs. >> the apple cofounder was 56 when he lost his long battle with cancer yesterday. joining us with a little insight is molly wood, editor with cnet. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. >> what are your first impressions? it was a ceo of a country but we lost someone special. >> reporter: absolutely. personally, it's extremely sad news. it's -- it's -- it's really heartbreaking i think in so many ways because he was so young and because his -- his genius was so pronounced and apple is so much a part of the cultural landscape and really the world. >> and molly, we were talking about, you know, the unveiling of the iphone 4s. it was done in cupertino, tim cook, seymour mellow. they had to have known this was coming. >> reporter: right. there's been a lot of speculation about that after -- now that this news has come out. we were really wondering if indeed the mood of that announcement was not very much

affected by how sick steve jobs must have been at the moment that they were presenting that new phone. >> when you think about it, he taught us how to watch movies, how to get our movies, how to listen to music, i mean, if you walk down the street in san francisco or any airport or any city for that matter, we're all look at our androids or iphones or -- it's just amazing what he has done. what do you think he will be remembered for the most? >> reporter: i think you make a really good point. the thing that he will be remembered for the most is for creating that kind of ecosystem. you know, the iphone to me is the product that seemed to be directly borne from steve jobs' brain. that's where he was able to integrate not just the electronics and the device but also that media, the apps, the way to listen to your music, watch movies and television. it all came together for the first time in the iphone and for me, that's the device i'll always associate most closely with steve jobs. >> i think even we don't realize the loss that we have

crucial vote. today san francisco's ninth circuit court of appeals will hear oral arguments in the case of a man accused of shooting giffords. jared loughner's attorneys are contesting a ruling that would sent him back to a missouri prison facility for more psychological treatment. the 23-year-old has pleaded not guilty to the january rampage, which killed six and injured 13 others. former alaska governor sarah palin says she is getting calls from republican presidential candidates now that she has decided not to run for the white house. she announced her decision yesterday during an interview with conservative radio host mark levin. she cited family considerations and said she can still effectively promote her agenda without that presidential title. >> 4:52 now. within the past hour, a swedish poet has won the nobel prize for literature. the swedish academy made the announcement in stock home. the winner, 80-year-old thomas transtromer. the academy said through his condensed translucent images he gives us fresh access to

reality. his work has been translated into more than 50 languages. and san francisco's fleet week starts today. the crew from the uss bonhomme richard docked in the bay yesterday. they snapped these photos of their arrival. fleet week offers civilians a chance to tour the navy equipment and shims. the goal to educate our public about the armed forces duties and capabilities. the blue angels are practicing over the bay today and tomorrow and they are going to perform this weekend. in the meantime, how's the weather going to be for them? >> well, today maybe a little sketchy. we do have the possibility of thunderstorms heading into the afternoon hours but by tomorrow, tapering off and beautiful. let's go ahead and take a look at the showers out there now. here's a look at high-def doppler radar and as you can see we have scattered showers passing through the peninsula over san francisco on into the bay and then of course livermore pushing off to the east, another area of just some light rainfall.

this is what you can expect throughout much of the day today. as we look toward the rest of your morning, let's check out, out the door scattered showers, the coast, the bay, and inland. temperatures this morning relatively cool, as well. we are talking 40s and 50s. so definitely off to a chilly start and temperatures do stay cool. in fact, 5 to 15 degrees below average as we head into the afternoon hours. that being said, showers should taper off later this afternoon but we are going to keep a chance of thundershowers in the forecast a slight chance anyway through this afternoon. and then showers taper off and we'll dry out in time for tomorrow. from the satellite perspective you can see the area of low pressure continuing to see this disturbance kind of wrapping around here and bringing with it some cooler air. part of the reason temperatures are so cool today but we have some warmer weather waiting in the wings. in the meantime i'll take you through your afternoon. starting off this morning as you can see, scattered showers and then the rain really does seem to kind of fill in through the south bay around lunchtime today advancing into the afternoon showers tapering off. and we should be dry later on

this evening, continuing into this weekend. temperature-wise as i mentioned below average. our highs today reaching 50s and 60s. so again 5 to 15 degrees below average for this time of the year thanks in part to the cool air that is filtering in behind the cold front that passed through yesterday. and as i mentioned earlier, if you are tired of these cool temperatures, tired of the rain, hang in there warmer weather isn't on the way. 70s by tomorrow, 80s back to seasonal norms by this weekend, still not warm enough? look at next week. finally going to see possibly a couple of low 90s for the warmest spots inland. so don't worry, we have not entered into winter early. just a briefly little winter- like storm. i think a lot of folks are ready for rain. we have had our fill. >> three days of that see you later. bring on the sunshine. >> how about the traffic on this thursday, elizabeth? >> she is mother nature. mother nature, she is a woman. she knows how to tease. we know how to do that, right?

[ laughter ] today's biggest difference from yesterday, we had wind advisories. we had a lot of spinouts by this time yesterday morning. that's not the case at all today. so far, so good up and down the nimitz, eight at through oakland as you pass the coliseum, drive time is fine. also southbound 880 looks good towards 92. we have chain requirements once again for interstate 80 so definitely pack your chains if you are planning a trip out of town heading up towards the sierra. here's a live look i believe near applegate is where my producer put up the live camera. so you can see that snow on the ground right now there are no chain requirements for highway 50 or highway 88. but, of course, that could change at any time. and hey, they are doing the lane change right now across the golden gate bridge so like clockwork, for a while overnight only one northbound lane of 101 was actually getting by but it looks like they are re-opening things now. so northbound and southbound 101 should be flowing freely here in the next couple of minutes. in the meantime let's check the south bay.
