7:20 am
very public, last a very long time, and in essence, belong to facebook. therefore, how can parents help kids make good decisions as they navigate their virtual lives? first, talk to them about their reputation. remind them that all the information put online can be made public. posts on their friends' walls, personal instant messages, intimate photos all can be cut, pasted, and sent around in an instant. once this is up on the web it, can be extremely difficult to remove. if they don't want the world to see it, then they better not post it or send it. this can also be a factor in cyber bullying cases. second, talk to your kids about respect. the internet allows kids and teens to explore their interests and play with their identities anonymously, but using anonymities to share mean, degrading or hurtful information about other people is a no-no. and as we all know, this is a
7:21 am
major element of cyber bullying as well. finally, talk with your kids and teens about protecting their privacy. kids should be aware that there are safety risks that come with social networking. make sure they use the maximum privacy settings when they are posting contacts so that they know who can see what they are sharing. for more advice and tips about all this, visit us at commonsense.org and at cbs5.com. i'm jim steyer. have a great weekend. well, the san jose sharks hit the road to face-off against anaheim. plus, a big win for san jose state. how the football team made history against hawaii. jones across the middle -- ,,,,,,,,,,,,

slight cooling, slight difference today. then we'll see temperatures drop down more as we make our way into sunday. monday, sunshine back in the picture, temporary warmup, and then we'll see a second low make its way into the picture, bringing us cooler temperatures, going to bring us more cloud cover to contend with. for this weekend, did you get to enjoy a little bit of sunshine, although cooler temperatures in the evening hours, if you're making your way to the treasure island music festival. definitely take the sweatshirt. >> this is the bay area, we don't go anywhere without a sweatshirt! october is domestic violence awareness month. a bay area group is helping victims rebuild their lives with dignity. shauna ross, the founder of courageous women joins us live this morning. thanks for being here. >> thank you for inviting me. domestic violence has been going on since the beginning of time, but it's really been a closeted issue up until now. people are more willing to talk
7:47 am
about it. how have things changed? >> well, things have changed now because there's a lot more support, there's a lot more awareness now that people are bringing to domestic violence. >> realizing that it's not okay that this happens. >> that's right. >> this is not a natural thing and should not be going on. >> that's right. a lot more advocacy going on for people, speaking out. >> speaking of courageous women, what do you do? >> we are a nonprofit organization that inspires, empowers, and uplifts women. we provide informational and educational workshops. we promote women's well-being. we hold a lot of motivational and empowerment events for women. we provide resources, support services, and tools that help women, that teach them and help to change their lives, help to improve their lives,

specifically women of domestic violence, women who are homeless, those who have been incarcerated, those who have, who are suffering through depression. and we serve women throughout the entire bay area, including the greater bay area of sacramento. >> and this is something you started because you have a personal experience with domestic violence. >> yes, yes. >> what are you willing to share with us about that? >> i'm a domestic abuse survivor. i call myself a survivor because i was almost murdered by-- at the hands of my then-husband. i'm also a victim of rape. so it hits home for me, to step out and to speak up. there was once a time where i did have a voice to speak, but because i surrounded myself with strong, incredible mentors in my life, they helped me, they supported me, they uplifted me and gave me a sense of hope in my life.
7:49 am
so because of that, i founded courageous women association, and we started out with about 25 women, where we gathered them around and we actually sat to talk about some of the different adversities that we all face in our lives and how we've come through them, and what i found was that it was beyond even domestic abuse. we had women there that were suffering through illnesses. there was a woman there who had been incarcerated for murder, you know, but these women walk different paths in their lives, but they were here to talk about it and they are here to talk about their triumphs and how they came through. >> seems like the most difficult part, though, is getting people in the door to your organization. in your own scenario, how did you come from that voiceless woman to someone founding an organization? how did that change occur? >> that change occurred, because like i said, there were women in my life that stepped in and that
7:50 am
shared with me how strong i am. i remember -- i tell people this all the time. i said a wise woman once told me, she said did you know you had courage in you the whole time? i said what do you mean by that? she says if you can get up out of bed, if you can take care of your kids, if you can take care of your family, still work, and go through the darkness that you've gone through, she said that's courage. for me, that spawned courageous women, because i said it's about letting these women know just how important they are in this world and what their work is. there's so much more work in this life. they need to know that so they can continue to live and learn how to live and get beyond some of the adversities that they are facing. >> definitely. we don't have a lot of time left. let's talk about your event coming up, which sounds like a whole lot of fun. that is the third annual free day of shopping and pampering.
7:51 am
>> that's right. this came in my spirit because what i have realized is women are selfless. we do a lot for other people and a lot of women don't have the opportunity, experience, to experience someone actually doing something for them. so what i created was a free shopping and pampering day, specifically for women of domestic violence, homelessness, rehabilitation, but it's also open to all women in need. there may have been people who lost their homes in a fire, who have lost something dealing with theft, so what we've done, we created this event that spawns around these women to just give our support and let them know that we care about them and let them know this is a date especially for you. >> you guys are looking for donations? >> yes, we're looking for donations. we are in the middle of trying to get transportation, so we need bus service.
7:52 am
we need vans to help carry the women, because we offer pickup and drop-off service for the women who don't have the need or the transportation to get to and from. >> fabulous. we have some information there on the screen. you can find it all on cbssf.com. what a wonderful thing you're doing. thanks for sharing your story. we appreciate it. >> thank you. >> courageous women. we'll be right back. ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,
