19th, 2011. good morning, everybody. thanks for joining us. i'm betty nguyen. in eastern ohio this morning, dangerous wild animals are on the loose and authorities are trying to hunted them down. dozen of animals, including lions, tigers, bears and wolves escaped from a wildlife preserve in zanesville, late yesterday. area residents have been warned to stay indoors and at least four school districts have canceled classes. >> wild animals. wild animals that you would see on tv in africa. right now, we are shooting to kill. >> deputies equipped with night vision and armed with assault rifles hunted the animals through the night. at last word, more than half had been killed but there could be a dozen or more still on the loose. staffers from the columbus zoo are also on the scene hoping to tranquilize and capture the animals without killing them. >> there were grizzly bears and black bears there and there were

cheetahs and there were lions and there were tigers. >> reporter: the animals at the muskingum farm were left open. the fences unsecured. the farm's owner, terry thompson, was found dead inside when authorities came to check on reports of animals roaming free. police did not comment how he died but did say several aggressive animals were nearby. >> from being here in the past, mr. thompson has brought all types of animals in here. we have dealt with this situation for a very long time and there have been all kinds of animals here, of all ages. >> reporter: with the potential to be deadly and dangerous? >> yes, high potential. >> ohio has some of the nation's weakest restrictions of keeping exotic animals at home and the highest numbers of injuries and deaths caused by them. let's get you now to politics. the republican presidential race has taken an aggressive turn. at the last night's debate in las vegas, front runners mitt romney and herman cain came under attack and the debate government personal and nasty

when rick perry accused romney of hiring illegal immigrants of working on his lawn. >> the idea that you can sit here and talk to any of us having an immigration issue is beyond me. >> we hired a lawn company to mow our lawn and they had illegal immigrants who were working there. when that was pointed out to us, we let them go and we -- you have a problem with not allowing someone to finish speaking and i suggest that if you want to be president of the united states you got to let both people speak. so, first, let me speak. >> got a little testy there. susan mcginnis is in washington. she joins us now. good morning, susan. what is the latest on all of this? got a little nasty during that debate. >> reporter: it certainly did. good morning. yeah. they went at it last night with only ten weeks to go before the iowa caucuses, it's pretty clear the gop presidential hopefuls are doing everything they can to stand out and discredit each other. all bets were off in las vegas

as the republican candidates went head-to-head. >> rick, i'm speaking. i'm speaking, i'm speaking. a tough couple of debates for rick and i understand that. so you're going to get -- you're going to get testy. >> reporter: the debate heated up last night as texas governor rick perry and former massachusetts governor mitt romney clashed over illegal immigration. >> mitt, you lose all of your standing from my perspective because you hired illegals in your home and you knew about it for a year. >> if there is someone who has a record as governor with regards illegal immigration that doesn't stand up to muster, it's you. >> reporter: no. >> reporter: most polls show mitt romney is the front-runner. all of the candidates zeroed in on another big challenger, georgia businessman herman cain. >> herm, i love you, brother, but you don't have to have a big analysis to figure this out. >> reporter: they blasted his 9-9-9 plan. >> any time you give the congress a brand-new tax, it

doesn't go away. >> it is a jobs plan. it is revenue neutral. it does not raise taxes on those that are making the least. >> reporter: in virginia, president obama slammed the proposal in an interview with "nightline" and said he is not worried about who wins the gop nomination. >> there is going to be a very clear contrast between whoever they nominate and their vision for where they believe they need to the country and where i believe we need to take the country. >> reporter: the president wraps up his three-day bus tour today in virginia. another opportunity for this group to interact comes in three weeks. the next debate is november 9th in michigan that will focus on the economy, jobs, the deficit and taxes. >> susan mcginnis in washington, thank you. police in philadelphia have taken ten people into protective custody in connection with the case of four people who were locked in a basement. the four victims were held in what authorities say was a scam to steal their social security payments.

investigators found dozens of identification cards in the home and now believe there may be as many as 50 more victims. three suspects remain in jail. the six juveniles and four adults taken into custody are apparently related to either the victims or the suspects. an apparent tornado struck southern florida overnight. the storm touchdown down northwest of ft. ladies dale. several homes were damaged but no reports of injuries. the apparent twister was part of a large weather system extending from the mississippi river to the atlantic and now moving north up the coast. heavy rain and possible flooding as well as wind guts gusts of up to 50 miles an hour should reach new england by tonight. overseas, it is reported that turkish commandos backed by jets and helicopter gunships moved into northern iraq this morning and chasing kurdish separatists. the turkish troops are said to have advanced about 2 and a half miles into the region known as

kurdishstan. authorities have not confirmed the cross-border strike. good news for social security recipients and update for stocks in asia. ashley morrison is here in new york with that and more. good morning, ashley. >> reporter: good morning to you, betty. asian markets rose today. japan's nikkei edged up a fraction while hong kong's hang seng was up more than 1%. today wall street the latest on the housing market and more economic data from the fed. on tuesday, late day rally pushed stocks higher. the dow closed up 180 points, while the nasdaq added 42. now to the good news for social security recipients. today, the government is expected to announce a cola, a cost of living adjustment of about 3.5%. it is the first increase since 2009. seniors receiving the average benefit of $1,082 a month will get an extra $37.84. a rare earnings disappointment from apple. after the closing bell, the company said sales and profits

missed estimates last quarter as the company sold fewer iphones. analysts say many people held off on their phone purchases until the release of the iphone 4s this month. if you were thinking of heading to the apple store to get a phone or anything else. all apple locations will close several hours today so employees can take part in an online memorial tribute to steve jobs. the recently introduced s.e.c. plan to warn cell phone customers when they are near their monthly limits comes a little bit late for one florida family. selena aarons thought there must be some mistake when she got a bill for 200,000 but it was for real. she shares a plan with her two brothers are deaf and mute and communicate by texting. when they took a trip to canada, they forgot to change to an international plan. t-mobile has since reduced the bill to $2,500. that was pretty nice there. >> that's a big reduction. thank goodness there for them.

police in kansas city say they need more information from the parents of missing baby lisa. 10-month-old lisa irwin was reported missing on october 4th by her parents, debra bradley and jeremy irwin. police say the parents have not talked to investigators for ten days and are not cooperating. authorities say they need answers that only the parents can give them. they have obtained a warrant to search the family home. in health news, pediatricians have said it before and they are saying it again. watching television is harmful to the developing minds of babies and young children. dr. jon lapook has the story. >> we are going to play mickey mouse clubhouse. are you ready? >> yeah. >> reporter: when it comes to

television and her 2-year-old son ari, nila camlet believes less is more. she allows just 20 minutes a day. >> it kind of turns off their brain a little bit. they are not actually having to think. they are not actually having to experience and learn things. >> reporter: the american academy of pediatrics says there's no proven benefit of television for kids under the age of 2. in fact, in this age group, tv is linked to short-term language delays and possible attention issues. research also suggests television watched by adults can distract children playing in the same room. dr. laura janice serves on the committee that studied the issue. >> the fact of the matter there is no proven educational benefit for these sorts of programs for children under the age of 2. >> reporter: it's unclear whether it harms the developing brain but the panel of experts say at the very least, it takes away time better spent interacting with the real world. >> children, very young children and even older children, learn better and do better with

time now for a check on the national forecast. the latest satellite picture shows thunderstorms from florida to michigan. west of the mississippi, it's clear all the way to the west coast. later today, soaking rain and strong winds from the great lakes to the east coast. the storm system will reach new england by the end of the day and chilly canadian air is moving into the plains. in sports, cincinnati bengals have traded quarterback carson palmer to the oakland raiders. after seven disappointing seasons with the bengals, palmer refused to play this year. he demanded a trade but the team refused, well, until now. oakland's quarterback was injured on sunday and the raiders offered first and second round draft picks for palmer. the nba labor talks went into overtime yesterday as the league and the players union

struggle to save the season, but after 16 hours, they called it a night and will resume this morning with a federal mediator. the world series starts tonight in st. louis. the national league champion cardinals and the american league texas rangers both worked at busch stadium yesterday. some players wore sweatshirts and knit caps and may wish they have them tonight. the forecast is for chilly temperatures. pitchers for the boston red sox are denying a report about beer drinking in the dugout during this year's disappointing season. one starter, jon lester, admits he drank beer and ate fried chicken in the clubhouse during games along with john lackey and josh beckett but they denied drinking in the dugout. boston suffered a historic september collapse to end the season and miss the playoffs when we return, another look at this morning's top stories. and he is just looking for a nice salad. find out what happened to this curious bear cub in alaska. cub in alaska.

on the "cbs morning news," here's a look at today's weather. the two storm systems in the eastern half of nation will begin to merge and strengthen. that will bring gusty winds and heavy rain from the great lakes to the east coast and into the southeast. west of those storms, sunny weather will exobtained all the way to the west coast. here is another look at this morning's top stories. authorities in zanesville, ohio, are hunting dozens of wild animals, including grizzly bears, tigers and lions allowed to escape from an animal preserve. area residents have been told to stay indoors. at last night's republican debate in las vegas, herman cain's tax plan came under attack and there were heated exchanges between mitt romney and rick perry. a follow-up now on that ailing american engineer who was evacuated from the u.s. science station at the south pole. since arriving in new zealand on

monday, renee-nicole douceur has been examined and doctors confirm she did suffer a stroke back in august. she is expected to recover, though, perhaps not 100%. a computer glitch made for some tense moments aboard a frontier airlines flight over colorado last week and it was caught on video. rick sallinger of our denver station kcnc has the story. >> reporter: it was last friday when frontier flight 787 left denver for las vegas. they were somewhere over ludville when the problem developed. at 36,000 feet, the air consist bus had an on-board computer malfunction. the oxygen masks dropped due to a slow loss of pressure. some passengers could be heard crying. andrew voss of wisconsin recorded this video. he recalled his ordeal for us. >> people crying. people getting really

hyperventilating, and then after we got out of the mountains, they announced that there was a cabin pressure failure. >> reporter: frontier spokesman issued a statement saying while this was a frightening event for many passengers on the flight no rapid decompression in the cabin or structural damage to the aircraft. the passengers and crew were never in danger. the plane and its passengers returned safely to denver. >> that was rick sallinger of kcnc in denver reporting. it must have seemed like a buffet to a little brown bear cub in southern alaska. check this out. he wandered into a grocery store in the town of catchacam. it was all caught on cell phone video. as he took a stroll among the lettuce, the cabbage, the carrots. look at him go. but he didn't have time to enjoy the feast. a man just walked up and grabbed him and later set him free. hopeful hopefully to find his

in the u.s. senate, the fries have it. french fries, that is. yesterday, senators voted down an agriculture department rule limiting the availability of fries and other potato products in school cafeterias. the measure would have allowed potato products to be served two days a week. the measure was approved by some school districts, and the potato association. in north california, a new restaurant is hoping to start a trend toward healthy food. the bay area eatery features a low calorie and low cost menu. it was started by two executives from mcdonald's. reporter mike sugarman of kpix has the story. >> reporter: a new restaurant opened in palo alto. big deal.

restaurants open and close all the time. something like 9 in 10 fail? this one may be different. nothing on the menu is over 600 calories or over $12. it's all sustainable and all natural and healthy food. it has a pretty good pedigree. the executives are from another restaurant you may have heard of. >> mcdonald's. >> reporter: it's called life and it could be the first of a nationwide chain of 250. at least that is the hope for former mcdonald's ceo mike roberts and former chief communications officer mike donahue. >> so many people have said, i'd like to change the way i eat a few days a week. how can i do it? i'm not willing to sacrifice taste. it's got to taste good. >> reporter: they hired top chefs, including oprah's personal cook, to design a menu that might appeal to the diner who doesn't really want to know what they are eating is also good for them. >> this is a totally health food focused restaurant with really tasting food.
