there. >> come back where it's good here and now you brought fog with you. >> i know. sorry. >> drizzle showing up near the coastline this afternoon. we'll see some sunshine but temperatures going to be cooler, highs only in the 70s into antioch, about 68 in oakland, 74 degrees in santa rosa, 73 in san jose. we'll have more on your weather coming up. right now let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. no major roadwork to slow you down this morning. no major accidents, i should say, to start off your morning commute. we have roadwork in east palo alto along the peninsula. so we'll tell you more with that plus more roadwork going on in the east bay including a full freeway closure. >> okay, very good. thanks, guys. it is 4:31. oakland city officials say they committed to letting protestors continue to occupy frank ogawa plaza. anne makovec is in oakland where there two different protest camps this morning. reporter: this is the largest at frank ogawa plaza here in front of oakland city hall. you can see here behind me it was stunning when we drove up

this morning. this is the first time that i have covered the "occupy" movement here in oakland. they have a tent city basically that's built here on the front lawn of city hall. there have been some problems according to city officials recently. and they say they are trying to work with the protestors right now to make sure everything runs smoothly here. one of the main concerns has been a rat issue, which apparently was already an issue here in this area. they say it has been exacerbated now by this demonstration. they also say that they have received letters of complaints from businesses around the area and individuals about alcohol, drug use, sex, vandalism and public urination. so far, though, they have largely accepted the encampment on the lawn. there are about 100 tents here and there have been for over a week. city officials have been getting more and more complaints so they are trying to decide what to do next. >> i believe it's an excuse for

the city of oakland to justify coming in here and breaking up our political protest. >> this is a plaza that has a long history of being used for people to express their concerns about various issues and we really facilitate that to the best of our ability. >> reporter: this movement is representing a litany of social complaints that we have been hearing about for the past couple of weeks. the "occupy wall street" movement is where this started. anger against banks and wall street in general, and it has expanded into several social issues here in oakland. some of the protestors actually moved to a second encampment that you guys referred to, that one in snow park by lake merritt. we have drove past there this morning. there's about a half dozen tents set up there and the city indicated it will not allow other encampments to stand. but again, it has been pretty accepting of this one here. back to you. >> still a huge problem. all right, thanks, anne.

in san francisco, they don't have permission but "occupy sf" protestors are still camping at justin herman plaza. some of them went to city hall yesterday hoping that supervisors and the mayor would tell police to leave them alone. >> let me say to you now, we stand with you in especially anger and frustration at the so- called too big to fail and the big financial institutions. >> they don't send the police to destroy it! >> excuse me again. you are out of order. [ applause ] >> camping in city parks is illegal and twice since the "occupy" protests began, police have moved in to take out the campers. and the "occupy" movement returns to walnut creek this afternoon. protestors will gather at 4:00 at the same spot as last wednesday, mount diablo boulevard and north main street. apple will host a special steve jobs tribute today for employees today.

the rare move that lets workers watch the memorial. stephanie chuang reports. reporter: the memorial will begin here at 10 a.m. at the amphitheater behind us at the infinite campus loop here. this morning we saw caterers taking crates of drinks inside and employees setting out there with big white flower arrangements getting ready for it. the flags are still flying at half-staff. of course, all paying tribute to the 56-year-old steve jobs who died two weeks ago today at his palo alto home. now, last sunday night hundreds of people went to stanford university's memorial church to honor the late apple cofounder. in attendance were microsoft's bill gates, oracle's larry ellison and even politicians like bill clinton and bono performed a bob dylan song. dylan was reportedly one of jobs' favorite artists. ceo tim cook sent out an email to employees about today's memorial. quote we are planning a celebration of his life for apple employees to take time to

remember the incredible things steve achieved in his life and the many ways he made our world a better place." again, it all starts at 10:00 this morning. it's also set to be webcast to employees around the world at apple stores. according to the "associated press," apple plans to close its retail stores for a few hours so workers can watch. a lot of this all shrouded in secrecy as is very symbolic of apple. again, a celebration of steve jobs' life. some employees have told the media this could last up to three hours. back to you. >> all right. stephanie chuang, thank you. you said the stores, so is that stores in the bay area or nationwide closed? >> reporter: you know what? there's a question of how many retail stores will be closed. you know, some in the bay area will be closed. it remains to be seen exactly how many and which stores. if it is across the country or even across the world, they may be closed for the celebration. >> thank you, stephanie chuang live in cupertino.

a disappointing earnings report for apple. the company said profits and sales fell short of analyst estimates last quarter causing company shares to drop sharply by 7% in after-hours trading. apple sold fewer iphones last quarter. industry experts say many were waiting for the release of this month's iphone 4s, which sold very well last weekend. it is a stunning twist that ties together two high-profile shootings in san jose. now, police announced yesterday that a suspect killed in an officer-involved shooting was the gunman who killed two students. ricardo moreno was shot and killed on october 10 after threatening police. the same gun was use today with days earlier in the execution- style killings of eric otokawa and his girlfriend, kristina pandula. >> they were both shot in the back of the head. it was an extremely brutal

crime scene. >> the motive is still unclear. moreno did meet otokawa while they both lived in the same residence hall and police say moreno had bought drugs from otokawa and they partied together. as for the woman, investigators say she was an unfortunate victim of circumstance. san jose police chief chris morris defending the department's handling of a shooting at a funeral for a local hells angels leader. he says attendees including potential witnesses were all allowed to leave oak hill memorial park to prevent additional confrontations. police are still searching for the shooting suspect believed to be 38-year-old steven ruiz, this man. investigators believe other hells angels members blamed ruiz for failing to protect jethro pettigrew, who was murdered last month at a nevada casino. police believe during pettigrew's funeral saturday, ruiz opened fire. steve tucson was killed by the

gunfire. it's unclear if ruiz is in hiding or if he was killed by the gang. his motorcycle was found abandoned near pettigrew's grave. fbi agents say the so- called magoo bandit is now in custody. agents say scott larson turned himself in yesterday. so far he has confessed to just one san diego bank robbery. agents say he is behind perhaps 12 heists including three right here in the bay area. he used a note to demand cash from the tellers and then in some instances, he even thanked his victims. this is really something. quite the slugfest in las vegas. seven candidates gathered for the latest republican presidential debate. >> sure was. texas governor rick perry who has been losing ground in the polls went after the front- runner, former massachusetts governor mitt romney. >> mitt, you lose all of your standing from my perspective because you hired illegals in your home and you knew for -- about it for a year. >> if there is someone who has

break up outside even thick enough that we're seeing drizzle at the beaches. but you can see spilling into the bay and valleys as well even some of that into the central valley so yes it's going to be cooler. temperatures now in the 50s and 60s at the door but we are looking at that onshore breeze and some cool temperatures. by the afternoon let's plan on 70s in the warmest spots inland today. a few 60s and 70s inside the bay. out at the coastline we'll keep the low clouds and fog temperature there expected to remain in the 50s and 60s. all right. it is traffic time. for that let's check the roads with elizabeth. outside we have a photographer this morning in san jose. this time near the alum rock exit so thank you for this live traffic shot. those headlights are moving northbound towards santa clara a nice smooth ride in either direction. on the maps, a little bit of roadwork might slow you down for the next 20 minutes on the peninsula through east palo alto between university and marsh, various lanes blocked in both directions. east bay full freeway closure

in pittsburg eastbound 4 shut down all lanes there at loveridge road so that should be picked up by 5:00,possibly 5:30. westbound traffic gets by fine and the nimitz, 880 through oakland northbound lanes of 880 various lanes blocked between fruitvale and 980. again, most of our roadwork should be wrapping up within the next 15 minutes. down the eastshore freeway from the carquinez bridge to the maze, it is still about an 18- minute drive time. you will find those roadworkers out there from the albany exit towards powell. that is traffic. back to you. >> thank you. ready to do a little christmas shopping? >> it's early. >> a little expensive at least in this catalog. nieman marcus out with some fantasy gifts we're all dreaming about. we'll share some of those with you. >> lions, tigers and bears on the loose? communities are being warned to stay inside. the wild animal escape that turned deadly. shock. like no way. >> look at the numbers. no joke.

describing dozens of exotic animals that escap very big and very angry. that's how police in ohio are describing dozens of exotic animals which have escaped from an animal farm. the owner was found dead on his farm and the doors to the animal cages were all wide open. wolves, bears and big cats got loose. officials are not saying how the owner was killed but they say it was not suspicious. today animal rescuers in san francisco hope to capture a red-tailed hawk that has a nail lodged in its head. wild rescue, a nonprofit group, set up traps around golden gate park. it appears someone used a nail gun to shoot the wounded bird on purpose. the suspect could face federal charges since red-tailed hawks are a protected species. a $5,000 reward is being offered for any information.

u.s. postal service is making changes and sadly we're all going to have to pay for them. the forever stamp is going up by one-cent starting january 22. they will cost 45 cents each now to send first class letters. there hasn't been a forever stamp price hike in more than 2.5 years. u.s. postal service is in the red in a big way and is pushing congress to allow drastic layoffs and operation changes. an $8billion deficit last year. >> no kidding. >> every penny can help. an extreme case of sticker shock in a big way for a cell phone customer. >> that's after she got a bill for more than $200,000. this is one day after the cell phone industry said it would warn people after it went over its usage limits. a woman shares a plan with her two deaf brothers and they use their cell phones for texts and

on friday men richmond police are having trouble finding witnesses to a brawl at city hall. on friday, men from two rival gangs ended up at the office of neighborhood safety. they were picking up checks being "peacemakers." a fight broke out and one man's nose was broken. police haven't identified a victim or any suspects but officers say ons employees have refused to cooperate. el dorado county is getting rid of inappropriate history for the 21st century. back in the 1950s, three dozen graves were moved from an old gold rush town called negro hill to a cemetery near folsom of the the headstones were stamped with a racial slur.

those headstones are now being replaced. >> it is a disgusting offense that needs to be cleared up once and for all. >> sadly not everyone feels that history should just be erased. some say at least one of the tombstones should be preserved as a monument to how racial relations have improved over the decades. some busy bridges in two bay area cities are in some bad shape according to a transportation group. >> the report by transportation for america says about 20% of the bridges in san jose and san francisco are structurally deficient. now, that means they require significant maintenance or replacement. some of the bridges in san francisco include the ones at the interchange of highway 101 and 280. also on the list, the harrison street bridge that crosses beale street and the 3rd street bridge at china basin. so a little scary to hear that report. >> so you go down to l.a. and it's cold, and then you come back to northern

[ laughter ] >> we have some fog around the bay area today and it's pretty thick. it moved well onshore even seeing drizzle at the coastline so it's going to be he slow to burn off outside right now. we have 50s and 60s. but gray skies everywhere you go this morning. the fog has stretched well onshore. some of that make its way into the central valley. toward the afternoon, we'll find sunshine and some 70s inland. you will still see 60s and 70s around the bay. toward the coastline, mix of sun and clouds and clouds temperatures generally into the 60s but you get the idea that this is a strong onshore push and bringing with it plenty of low clouds and fog surging in toward the central valley, as well. and it's going to be slow to burn off so temperatures coming down again. this low passing to the north of us now and once it moves by maybe getting to see that ridge sneak in and that may happen as early as this afternoon so we may begin to break up some. clouds toward the coastline a

bit. our futurecast showing clouds early on today. patchy fog at the coastline until 1 p.m. and then we'll see some of that redeveloping and moving onshore toward tomorrow morning. so yeah, looks like a cooler day around the bay area but not bad. the temperatures just going to be down running a little below average. 75 in danville. inside the bay it will be breezy and foggy for a good part of the morning. 60s by the afternoon. maybe as high as 74 in santa rosa. next couple of days, we are going to keep those temperatures down a bit but the good news is, looking toward the weekend, high pressure building in, maybe an offshore wind. that should warm up temperatures very nicely. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> sonoma county, car hit a

power pole. both directions of lakeville highway are closed at bore desi road so in the meantime, use 101 or 121 as an alternate until 7:30. golden gate bridge great past the wall tow grade. it looks like -- waldo grade. it looks like they are doing the lane change right now. elsewhere towards the bay bridge toll plaza, some slight delays in the cash lanes but over at not too bad this morning. right now heading into san francisco, there will be some roadwork on the upper deck. but again it shouldn't slow you down much from the incline towards the island. and the san mateo bridge no roadwork nothing to talk about here. everything looks great in either direction between hayward and foster city. and one more reminder. they do still have this full freeway closure in effect in pittsburg eastbound highway 4 shut down at loveridge road. more traffic in a bit. back to you.
