this is a cbs news special report. i'm erica hill in new york. in libya this morning, reports say moammar qaddafi who held an iron grip on power for 42 years as libya's unquestioned leader has been wounded and captured by rebel forces. we are also learning this morning that rebel forces have captured his hometown of sirte. we want to go now to cbs news correspondent charlie d'agata who is in london this morning with the very latest on this breaking story. charlie, good morning. >> reporter: good morning to you, erica. yes, the information is come out of the reuters news agency, quoting colonel qaddafi has been captured, wounded in both legs. they are pinning that on an ntc official t follows weeks of fierce fighting in the battle for sirte, qaddafi's hometown.

nato has been involved in that offensive, as well. also, we understand in the bombing of a convoy trying to flee sirte today, rebels have been celebrating across libya's news of the rumors anyway spreading. if qaddafi has been captured, it comes two months to the day since the fall of tripoli. the final assault on sirte began this morning around 8 a.m. rebels say it was over 90 minutes later. reuters quoting an ntc official. colonel moammar qaddafi has been captured and wounded. he is on the way to hospital. he is in custody. >> thank you, charlie d'agata in london. we'll have more later. i'm erica hill in new york. this has been a cbs news special report.

good morning. breaking news, according to reuters reports, moammar qaddafi, the leader for 42 years of a north african country of libya has been captured by rebel forces. we have word he has been wounded in both legs and is on the way to the hospital this. information just coming out. it was in the town of sirte. where he lived and where he was holed up here for pretty much the last two months. it's two months to the day when the capital city of tripoli fell to the rebels. you might imagine there's a lot of celebrating going on in libya right now. but moammar qaddafi, the colonel, the commander of that, uhm, and dictator of that country for the last 42 years has been wounded in both legs on the way to the hospital and is in custody now by the rebel forces. >> pretty amazing considering the months that have gone by.

we have seen rebel forces fighting in the area and being unable to capture this leader now two months as you mentioned to the day that they had tripoli -- that tripoli fell to rebel forces. they have captured their leader -- again, the president, moammar qaddafi. >> saddam hussein i think was it two, three, four, five months, something like that, it took the united states a long time to ferret him out and i'm sure that qaddafi had a lot of sympathizers in the country after ruling there for some 42 years. but he has been captured. he was wounded during the fight as grace mentioned, wounded in both legs on his way to the hospital. these are live pictures right now in the general area where qaddafi was captured. as we mentioned in custody on his way to the hospital. >> pretty amazing. what we're also hearing is that nato was involved and has been involved in helping these rebels for the past few

months. he is alive. we don't know the sent of the wounds. secretary of state hillary clinton was just there a few days ago on a surprise visit. she is in afghanistan right now. a busy day. closer to home a developing story. richmond police searching for a security guard suspected in the late night workplace shooting. anne makovec joins us now from richmond to explain exactly what happened. anne, good morning. >> reporter: a wild scene here at a public housing complex in richmond. police say there were about 50 shots fired last night between three different security guards. they are saying it was basically a shootout and now one suspect is on the loose. let me show you the scene where

police are still gathering evidence right now. it was in that office that you see back there, security guard office, where things went down at around 10:30 last night. police say dorian long works as a security guard here at the crescent park apartments in richmond. they say last night he came to work, left for a short time and came back with at least one gun and then fired into that building at his supervisor. that man was hit but is expected to live. and that man then fired several shots back. two others saw him and they shot him. police say they don't know why long initially opened fire on his supervisor. >> from what we understand, mr. long was in a -- some kind of altercation with the victim

that was shot. he came later and ended up shooting into the building and hitting the victim. >> and they also say that long discarded two guns here at the scene that police describe as rifles. they think he does have at least one with him now. he is considered armed and dangerous and here's his picture. a white man 5'8", 220 pounds, may be driving a red toyota tacoma truck. he is also apparently a suspect in a shooting in concord. so police are planning on being here at in crime scene in concord for the rest of the morning as they try to sort this out and count all the bullets fired last night. >> thank you, anne makovec. there is a big traffic problem that we have. we had a big one yesterday and today. >> that was on highway 80 right

a 101. this one is in vacaville. >> it's a mess in vacaville. westbound 80 by lagoon valley road a jackknifed big rig. the big rig was carrying a load of live chickens. well, it lost the load in this crash t all happened around 2:00 this morning. for a while they had all lanes of westbound 80 closed. then able to open a few lanes. we are already seeing slowing in the area. they will have a traffic alert until noon or later. this is going to affect the drive through vacaville for much of the day. this is westbound 80 by lagoon valley road. traffic is able to get by in the left lanes and the center divide. consider the lagoon valley off- ramp, then take the frontage road and then get back on northbound 80 at west texas street. a jackknifed big rig carrying a

load of live chickens. outside live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. it's great everywhere else across the bay area. no issues heading into san francisco. elsewhere another camera to show you of interstate 880 and we'll show that you in a couple of minutes. back to you. a san francisco hero will be honored as life saver just a week from today. a woman passing by dragged a truck driver away from his burning rig. that truck fire blocked southbound highway 101 in san francisco for hours yesterday morning. trucker michael finnerty jackknifed after two cars crashed right in front of him. >> they hit the guardrail, flipped up in the air, and i just thought i was going to the guardrail because it's 100 feet, 200 feet down and that's which are thought i was going. i don't remember getting out of the truck. next thing you know, i was a couple of hundred feet away. god bless my guardian angel was

with me. >> keenia williams saw the wreck in the rear view mirror and the 22-year-old ran to help. >> he is on top and standing between the fire -- he passes out. so now i'm like oh, my god, oh, my god, so my first instincts is to run over there and i tried to put my arms under his arms and i dragged him all the way to my car. >> she wasn't done yet. williams comforted finnerty as he drifted in and out of consciousness while waiting for emergency crews to arrive. it is 4:39 now. the oakland hills this morning, a public remembrance is planned for a devastating fire. the flames broke out 20 years ago today near buckingham drive. crews thought they had the flames put out and they went home but with low humidity and high winds, the fire roared back to life the next day. >> real mistake was the next morning, when they had good visibility and they saw the wind was picking up and they could see the embers flying around that's when they should have acted. >> it turned into one of the

nation's worst fires. 25 people died, more than 3300 homes were burned in oakland and the berkeley hills. fema is calling it the largest earthquake drill ever. 8.5 million californians are expected to take part in this year's great california shake- out. at precisely 10:20 this morning, people are encouraged to take cover under tables or door ways and then later update emergency kits. people can also check out mobile earthquake simulators at the marin general hospital. bart plans to stop all its trains for a minute at that hour. 4:40. weather-wise a little chilly this morning but we'll find out what the real skinny is from the man. >> yeah. cooler in the bay area today. temperatures in the 40s and 50s, with low 60s inside the bay. fog outside is going to help to keep us cool in the afternoon. you can see it filling in a bit maybe not as thick as yesterday

but thick enough. it's going to take time to burn off and temperatures will be down. right now a cool 48 degrees to start out in santa rosa with fog and a quarter mile visibility but 60 in oakland and 61 in mountain view. by this afternoon, we'll see the temperatures up into the 70s in spots inland today with plenty of sunshine there. you will see some 60s into oakland for today some 70s into the san jose area and out toward the coastline a couple of patches of fog at the beaches and a little cooler there too. next couple of days, we are going to see some changes. high pressure building in as early as tomorrow. temperatures warming up a few degrees but more significant warming on saturday and sunday. we are going to see high pressure building maybe an offshore wind that will make for quite the nice weekend. in fact, some nice whoa the next five to serve days. that's a look at weather, guys. back to you. >> thanks a lot, lawrence. 4:41 now. as we are continuing to follow breaking news this morning, there are reports that moammar qaddafi has been wounded and captured in libya.

where we're hearing "report" that moammar qaddafi has ben we continue to follow breaking news out of libya this morning where we're hearing multiple reports that moammar qaddafi has been companytured. he was the leader of that country for 42 years. details are still coming in at this hour. but libyan television is reporting that he was captured in his hometown of sirte and has been wounded. these are live pictures of celebrations of rebel forces in that area of sirte. there is conflict information though. this comes after a continued gun battle rages. libyan fighters were driving out the last holdouts out of qaddafi's hometown. we'll continue to bring you reports throughout the morning.

this morning, animal rights activists are supporting the decision by police to kill dozens of loose exotic animals in ohio. tuesday night the owner of a private animal farm released nearly 50 wild animals before taking his own life. authorities then how about down and killed 48 animals -- hunted down and killed 48 animals including lions, tigers and bears. the animals' enclosures were tampered with so many couldn't be returned, according to police. >> not only were the gates open but some of the pens were also cut open. so where if people tried to put the animals back into the pen, they still could have got loose. >> some activists have criticized ohio governor john kasich for letting state bans on purchasing exotic animals expire this year. 4:45. pg&e's gas pipeline problems could have roots as far back as the 1940s. state regulators say there is new evidence that the utility

installed salvaged or junk transmission pipes in the '50s and '40s. this increases concern about more undetected problems like the one that caused the explosion and fire in san bruno last year. the public utilities commission will meet this morning in san francisco and they are discussing how much pg&e should be allowed to charge its customers to modernize its natural gas system. it's expected to cost more than $3 billion. and the utilities plan would have ratepayers covering 90% of that tab. state assemblyman jerry hill plans to be there urging the panel to reject pg&e's proposal. she's back. >> she is. just over a months after her last visit, republican presidential candidate michele bachmann return to the bay area. later today the minnesota congresswoman will discuss her economic policies at the san francisco commonwealth club. bachmann will focus on her strategy for creating jobs and reforming tax codes. the event begins at noon. and this morning, president

obama is back in the white house after a three-day bus tour to promote his jobs plan wrapped up yesterday in virginia. he made a final stop there at a firehouse in virginia to urge the passage of a $35 billion proposal to keep firefighters, teachers, police officers all working. vice president joe biden will hit the road with the same message in the granite state of new hampshire today. the obama administration is banking on the social media industry for new jobs. the labor secretary will announce a new partnership with facebook and other organizations to help americans find jobs. the university of maryland. >> reporter: that facebook has already created at least 182,000 jobs this year adding about $12 billion in wages and benefits to the economy. there will be a live webcast on the partnership coming up at 7 a.m. apple employees finally got a chance to bid farewell to their leader. it was referred to as a celebration of life. a private memorial for apple

deposed libyan leader moammr gadhafi has been captured in back to breaking news. libyan television is reporting this morning that libyan leader moammar qaddafi has been captured in sirte. however, we do not have this confirmed. neither the pentagon nor the white house has come out to confirm the capture of qaddafi just yet. we are getting conflicting information. a national transitional council military spokesman reports of qaddafi's capture and says they are only rumors and added that it's doubtful that qaddafi was even in or around his hometown of sirte. cbs is working to confirm whether this information is true and as soon as we learn if this rumor is true or not, we'll bring it to you live. in the meantime u.s. secretary of state hillary clinton is calling for a three- way partnership between the u.s., afghanistan and pakistan. the goal is to fight insurgents and bring them back into society, those fighters who are willing to accept clear guidelines. clinton made the announcement

today at kabul at a news conference with afghan president hamid karzai. thousands of protesters are in the streets of athens the second day of a general strike in greece. today the greek parliament is expected to vote on more austerity measures. greece's international debt inspectors are warning today that a second bailout for the country that was tentatively agreed on in july does not make its massive debt sustainable. just in time for the holiday season airfares are moving up. earlier this week delta was the first to announce increases of between $4 to $10 on most domestic roundtrip tickets. this is the first widespread price hike since the summer. american airlines recently reported $162 million loss and i was looking at tickets to get back east for my wife and i for the holidays. >> did you buy? >> no! they were like $700 roundtrip and it's usually between 350

and 5. so pays to shop around a bit. >> now what's free? the weather report. >> that's right. >> he works for peanuts. >> i think he should stay for the holiday week. >> i'd like to, believe me. >> probably not going to get the time off anyway. >> thanks, lawrence. >> you're welcome. patchy fog around the bay area this morning to start out your day but it's going to clear out in most spots today. foggy toward the coastline, low clouds inside the bay. patchy fog as you make your way to the interior valleys. temperatures cool in spots but i think by the afternoon, we're looking good. plan on mid-70s in the warmest spots inland, a lot of 60s inside the bay, 70s inside the santa clara valley and patchy fog at the beaches. low clouds and fog not as extensive as yesterday but filled into the bay well here. in some of the valleys a quarter mile visibility into santa rosa.

temperatures warm up nicely this weekend. so computer models picking up on the fog this morning should pull back to the coast leaving lots of sunshine toward the afternoon. really great weather outside. east bay temperatures into the 70s. east bay patchy fog. temperatures there mainly into the 60s. next couple of days we'll see changes in the works tomorrow maybe a little warmer but the weekend is looking fantastic now. get out there and enjoy. temperatures in the 80s, hick couple monday, but temperatures warm up monday and tuesday. >> fantastic weekend. >> we have issues in trafficland. elizabeth, what's cooking? >> our problems involve chickens this morning.

you heard that right. vacaville big rig carrying a load of live chickens jackknifed and it's blocking the freeway. westbound 80 approaching lagoon valley road where the accident is. slowing on our sensors behind it. they expect it to be cleared at noon or later. so consider using the frontage road and get back on the freeway using north texas. for right now no need to use the alternate because it's still early but they expect the closure to be out there partial closure to be out there for a while. okay. just getting word of new delays for bart now out of downtown oakland in the sfo and millbrae directions. there is a person on the tracks at the west oakland station so right now there are about 15- to 20-minute delays again in the san francisco direction from downtown oakland. they do hope to have this problem resolved here very shortly and we will let you know as soon as they do. in the meantime back outside here's a live look at the golden gate bridge. and traffic from marin is

looking great heading into the city. we'll have more traffic in a bit. back to you guys. >> thank you. the fda has announced yet another food recall. taylor farms is warning that more than 3200 cases of various salad blends may be contaminated with salmonella. the products were sold in supermarkets across the u.s. including here in california. no illness has been reported in connection to these products but customers who purchased them are urged to throw them out. and some new guidelines on cervical cancer screening could mean fewer trips to the doctor's office. yearly pap tests used to be recommended for all women to check for any precancerous or cancerous cells but leading experts now say healthy women can get screened every three years. >> the more often you do a test, there is a higher chance you will come up with what we call a false positive. false positive test can be harmful because they may lead a woman down a pathway for
