today. we have the offshore wind blowing, red flag warnings come down at 6 a.m. but the temperatures are chilly. north bay into the 30s in the napa valley. also into the santa rosa area. skies clear all the way to the coastline. and it's going to stay that way today. looks like another nice day ahead. more on that in a moment. first let's check the roads with elizabeth. >> lower deck roadwork on the bay bridge towards oakland. there may be reroutes possible for muni near justin herman plaza. "occupy sf" once again may be detouring things around for muni. so we'll have much more on that plus the rest of the roads coming up later this morning. >> thank you. we begin at 4:31 with "occupy" protestors from both side of the bay uniting right now. >> this as san francisco police are staging around the "occupy sf" camp. and the in the east bay "occupy oakland" protestors could not get into bart last night. so they marched around oakland instead of going to the san

francisco protest camp. and there, members of the "occupy" movement are waiting this morning for an anticipated police raid. anne makovec is at justin herman plaza. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. no sign of a police raid here at 4:30. they have been expecting it for several hours. and it is generally peaceful here at justin herman plaza. take a look at the camp here behind me. it's been here for a couple of weeks. you can see people milling around. we have flags, banners, and those tents that are really the source of what is illegal here in justin herman plaza. some people are wearing handkerchiefs on their faces. some have been doused in vinegar to help them, they say, ward off any tear gas if police end up throwing any tear gas at them. so they are prepared. but they say they are also ready for peaceful resistance,

general civil disobedience. nobody wants anything here to happen like in oakland over the past 24 hours. now, police have been staging, as grace mentioned, for some sort of operation. they were staging out at treasure island and then south of market overnight. this is some video taken from chopper 5. we have heard from mayor ed lee a couple of times over the past few days saying the protestors are breaking the law by camping overnight and they have to comply. >> we do have to enforce our laws. i have been telling people and we have been giving all the notices out. >> reporter: we did also hear overnight from several supervisors from san francisco, john avalos, david campos, jane kim and david chiu as well as state senator leland yee all speaking out in favor of this encampment. you can hear some of the cheers maybe here behind me. they are gathering behind the encampment right now, not the supervisors but the protestors, talking about what they will do

when and if the police get here but again, the theme is to try to stay peaceful. back to you guys. >> anne, when it happened in oakland, the atmosphere was really tense. but here, doesn't seem so much tense as it is just anticipation, isn't it? >> reporter: that's right. which is kind of a picture of the difference between the two camps all along. it always seemed like the camp in oakland was a little more ready to put up the fence and keep out the outside world while here in san francisco, it has had more of a welcoming air if i can categorize it that way. >> all right. >> reporter: not that they're welcoming the police, let me point that out. >> good point. thank you. "occupy" protestors in oakland are calling for a citywide general strike next week. organizers say it's still in the planning stages. but it would involve shutting down businesses and taking students out of schools. meanwhile, frank ogawa plaza is once again open to the public. hundreds of protestors marched

around city hall last night and things were relatively peaceful. it was a big contrast to tuesday when police dismantled the two-week-old encampment at the plaza citing health and safety concerns there. protestors clashed with police, who used multiple rounds of tear gas to disperse the crowd. >> our officers were assaulted with bottles, rocks, and had hazardous materials thrown at them. >> protestors say police were at fault. oakland protest organizers say they plan a general assembly at 6 p.m. this evening. an iraq war veteran is hospitalized after being injured during the oakland protest. 24-year-old scott olsen was hit in the head with a project tile on tuesday. friends contend it was a tear gas canister hurled by police. highland hospital says olsen is in critical condition with a head injury and swelling on the

brain. >> it's really sad and terrible event to, you know, two tours in iraq and no injuries, come back safe, and then, you know, be out trying to help make a difference and help other people and be shot by the very people that are supposed to be help protecting them. >> the acting police chief says internal affairs are investigating as well as the district attorney and two other agencies. jordan says his department is reviewing its policies and its procedures. a new cbs 5 poll says the "occupy" protests are hurting the image of oakland mayor jean quan. 72% of oakland voters said they don't approve of the way she has handled the protests. only 20% approve. as for the oakland police department's response, 56% say officers were too harsh with the protestors, while 11% said police were not harsh enough. 30% said the opd's response was just about right. one other note on mayor quan. our poll found that her job

approval in general has plummeted again. 64% of oakland voters disapprove of the way the mayor is doing her job. her approval rating is now just 20%. that is down 8 points in less than two weeks. surveyusa took the poll before the mayor announced they could return to the plaza if they are peaceful. "occupy wall street" demonstrators in new york city have taken to the streets in a show of solidarity with protestors in oakland. hundreds of demonstrators marched towards city hall lower manhattan last night and as you can see from this video a whole lot of shoving and pushing going on here. there have also been several arrests because of this incident. it is 4:37 now. the search is on for a moon sexually assaulted a woman inside a skyline college classroom. officers say the classroom was empty at the time of the attacks. on tuesday night the woman describing the suspect as a

white male about 5'11" 25 to 30 years old, she says it looks like he had a scar or a tattoo on his neck. anyone who might have information is urged to call police. this morning bart directors are set to decide whether the system can ever interrupt cell phone service at bart stations. bart, of course, blasted this past august when it scrambled cell signals at san francisco stations to prevent protestors from communicating with each other. the policy up for a vote today would set limits on when cell phone service can be disrupted. it was fight to the finish in oakland. but it wasn't enough. >> that's right. this morning, the school district has decided to shut down five elementary schools. board members voted 5-2 last night to close lakeview, lazear, marshall, maxwell park and santa fe. and hundreds of parents and teachers marched just before last night's school board meeting trying to raise awareness about this

restructuring plan. the superintendent says closing the five schools and merging a handful of others will save the district around $2.2 million. one school board member, though, disagrees. >> oakland has to do better. i'm tired of oakland being the city of hope and dope the way we treat our kids. we lose too many kids to apathy, motivation and due to our performance at the school district and that has to end. we cannot afford to do that anymore. >> the five elementary schools will close for good in june of 2012. we have a first look at traffic and weather. what are we, cold? i hear it's snowing in some parts of the country now? >> in the eastern half of the country they are seeing snow. you what beautiful weather out here. a lot of sunshine at the coast. it will stay that way folks. red flag warning continues until 6 a.m. but after that, don't worry, we have great weather coming our way. a few high clouds cruising across our skies and that's the worst of it. nice and clear down below with

minutes." stock futures and world markets are higher on news from europe who agreed to reduce greece's debts. the french president said it took all night to agree on the plan but says the results will be relief worldwide. governor brown is expected to announce big cuts to public employee pensions. the "associated press" reports the governor's plan would raise the retirement age up two years from 65 to 67 for most new hires who are not public safety workers. it would also raise employee benefits contributions and set up a hybrid retirement system combining a guaranteed benefit with a 401(k) style plan subject to market whims. the administration says the plan could save $900 million a year. well, they pulled off a pretty hefty heist i guess could you say. >> no kidding. these thieves stole a two ton church bell from st. mary's cathedral in san francisco. they didn't get very far.

the number of deaths from the turkey earthquake up to 523 this morning. survivors are dealing with weather problems today, rain and snow falling on the homeless who are now living in tents. 185 people have been rescued from the rubble. the search continues now for survivors some three days later. u.s. officials have given bp the go-ahead to drill new deep water wells in the gulf of mexico. it is the first such permit since last year's catastrophic oil spill. regulators say bp has met strict safety requirements implemented after the deepwater horizon disaster. the proposed exploratory well is in the water more than 6,000 feet deep. pg&e says that it's finished those repairs on a natural gas pipeline near bakersfield. a section of the pipe failed

earlier this week as crews conducted hydrostatic pressure test. this was in an alfalfa field. another test is planned today. the utility has been conducting the test under pressure after a pg&e pipeline exploded last year in san bruno killing 8 people. this is an amazing story. in san francisco, honoring a good samaritan today who saved a man from a big rig fire. >> you may remember that last week. fire chief joanne hayes-white and mayor ed lee will award a civilian commendation to the woman who pulled a truck driver away from the burning big rig on 101 and 80. the truck fire blocked southbound highway 101 last week. 22-year-old keenia williams saw the wreck in her mirror, ran to help the unconscious truck driver. >> if we were ever in trouble, lawrence would be right there with us to pull us out of danger, right, lawrence? >> i that's what i'm here for, guys. whenever we get in trouble. >> go ahead now. we got a great day coming

and southbound 880 between 280 and old bayshore highway. north bay, coming off of the golden gate bridge into the city, looks great. they have not done the lane change yet. so quiet. there is some roadwork between novato and san rafael. various lanes blocked, should be wrapped up by 6:00 or earlier. and the milpitas commute westbound 237 silicon valley commuters you should have no issues this morning heading into san jose. you can see this live picture near 880 and 237. so pretty quiet towards zanker road typically closer towards 7:00 we start to see delays. westbound 580 usually one of our first spots to back up. so far, so good past the wind turbines through livermore towards vasco road. and highway 4 same thing no big deal here heading through antioch. you will find one lane closed eastbound highway 4 at bailey. they are doing that ongoing roadwork in the area. should be wrapping up by about 7:00 and, of course, stay tuned

to kcbs at 106.9 fm for all the latest updates. that's your traffic. back to you. 4:54 now. there is even more evidence this morning of the danger of using a tanning bed. this after a major 20-year study involving more than 73,000 nurses. researchers found that for every 4 times you tan, your risk of life-threatening skin cancer increases by 11%. younger tanners were at the highest risk. in california, tanning bed use is illegal for minors under 18. this is interesting. the new buzz word in food marketing, artisan. that once meant that the food was hand crafted. now they say it's only a marketing tool to sell smaller food products at the same price as regular portions. in addition, experts say something artisan isn't like labeling it as organic because that requires strict standards. >> it's a way of exaggerating, suggesting craft without

necessarily suggesting anything specific. there is no legal definition of artisan. >> "usa today" reports about 80 products used the label in 2007. now more than 800 tuesday from bread to tortilla chips. so tricky. the city of san jose is ready to sell five acres of downtown property to the oakland as co-owner lew wolff. the plan would give the as exclusive rights to the land near the hp pavilion and diridon train station if the team can build a new ballpark there. wolff and the city hope it will make a good impression with major league baseball official, who still haven't allowed whether to allow the as to move in the first place. the price tag for the land would be $7 million much less than what the city paid for when the economy was better. jack the cat is a feline who escaped from jfk airport in august. he has been found. after nearly three months on the lamb, yesterday jack tumbled through the ceiling
