your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. wind spark problems across the bay area, an all-night battle to control a wildfire in napa county. the evacuations and the destruction. we decided that we're going to close the doors in terms of business. >> bracing for the strike. schools, banks and the port shut down today in oakland. the warning to businesses. good morning, it is wednesday, november 2. good to have you with us. i'm frank mallicoat. >> i'm grace lee. it is 4:30. right now, crews are battling a 90-acre wildfire that destroyed a home in napa county. it began last night north of the city of napa at 9:00 last

night. two dozen homes have been evacuated. cal fire says that the fire is about 50% contained. they are expecting full containment around 9 a.m. this morning. they say it was caused by strong winds that knocked down a power line. the winds have also been causing problems elsewhere in the bay area. here's a look at a dublin residential area last night. wind gusts up to 35 miles per hour in livermore and one 46 miles per hour in berkeley. wind also may have been a factor in a small grassfire just off lawrence road in danville. there have also been some power outages with thousands of homes and businesses in the dark for while. the most significant was in oakland, san leandro, piedmont, concord and santa rosa. pg&e says electricity has been restored just about everywhere. those winds have died down at least here at ground level but i guess on the mountains it's crazy throughout. >> let's check with lawrence to see how bad it is. >> just breezy down below.

some of the winds 10, 12 miles per hour. but you get up the mountains a bit and some of those gusts are still over 40 miles per hour this morning. so red flag warnings are up today. we are looking at offshore winds, very low humidity down to the teens. the red flag warning is extended until 9 a.m. because of these conditions. but that should subside today. eventually we'll see more of an onshore breeze as we head into the latter part of the day. temperatures mild outside right now. pretty typical with the offshore wind. 62 in mountain view. 60 oakland. 61 fairfield. by in afternoon, again, should be another spectacular day, gorgeous weather all around the bay area. but things are about to change. high pressure is going to weaken and by tomorrow, we're talking about the prospects of rain returning to the bay area opening the door to a series of storms rolling through. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic with elizabeth. >> we'll start off with a check of mass transit.

everything is on time. everything is off to a nice start for bart and ace train 1 but possible delays throughout the day. of course, we'll be following this throughout the morning, the planned protest around oakland we'll be watching mass transit including bart very closely. no official wind advisories on any bridge this morning but, you know, good day to keep two hands on the steering wheel -- always a good day to do that i guess. at the bay bridge no metering lights. no delays so far approaching the pay gates and across the golden gate bridge you will find roadwork this morning on 101 through novato but across the waldo grade things look great. roadwork through sunnyvale on westbound 237 but as you can see there at the 880/237 interchange in milpitas, so far, so good. back to you. >> thank you. >> better than no hands. >> that's true. big strike this morning. anne makovec is in oakland at the epicenter of activism at the frank ogawa plaza. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. and at this early hour, protestors are preparing for today's mass strike and day of action. you can see them making signs over there behind the fronts of the plaza. everybody is hoping this is going to be peaceful and that the issues of the 99% are front and center. mayor jean quan encouraged businesses to stay open today but warned business owners warning of the strike telling them to be sure their business has locks, cover exposed door jams are steel plates and leave cash drawers empty. several businesses here downtown have decided to stay closed today including one downtown bank. hundreds of teachers are expected to walk out of the classrooms today. those students are expected to show up except for at the oakland school for the arts. that is closed today citing

student safety concerns. more than 100 labor unions say they will support the protest. >> we'll be supporting the protest. >> if small business take hate tomorrow it will be one day. that's nothing compared to the economic system that has caused this crisis. >> reporter: the demonstrators say later on today they are going to march on the port of oakland to try to shut down the night shift at the port. so we are expecting mass gatherings here at 14th and broadway at 9 a.m. and noon. protestors then plan it march outside -- to march outside banks that aren't closed then a critical mass bike ride at 4 p.m., walking march at 5:00 both ending at the port of oakland. city employees are allowed to take the day off if they got supervisor approval ahead of time. so that's going to be the

dichotomy here. you're going to be seeing some city employees on one side of the protest and then the police officers, who are on the other side of the protest, trying to make sure that things are under control. they are not allowed to participate. the police union has been complaining about the mixed messages that city government has been giving in this case. >> it's going to be a business someday. anne makovec, thank you. the "occupy sf" movement gets official support. san francisco supervisors passed a resolution expressing their support for the protestors. the resolution asked the mayor and police not to use force to remove those protestors from the plaza. meanwhile, some homeless people are complaining that police are going after them but not after the protestors at justin herman plaza. >> you're from the board of supervisors. should somebody get ticketed for sleeping outside one place and not another? >> i think what we all want to ensure is that our homeless

eventually have a place that is not in the elements, that is in a homeless shelter, that's under a roof. that's where we're trying to go. thank you very much. >> reporter: but -- >> mike sugerman working it last night. "occupy sf" has hinted it may move from justin herman plaza to the civic center in the next couple weeks. you have north in santa rosa the city council votes next week on whether to kick protestors out of their encampment at city hall. the council told city manager to work out an agreement with the protestors. occupy santa rosa plans to keep the camp until christmas eve. formerly conjoined twins doing well after a long surgery to separate them in palo alto. a team of 20 doctors and nurses spent several hours yesterday separating angelina and angelica sabuco at the lucille packard children's hospital. the philippine-born twins were joined at the chest and the abdomen. the biggest concern was the

[ indiscernible ] and the team. >> quite a day for that mother. the girls were taken to separate recovery rooms. they will be taken out of sedation today and will stay in intensive care for up to a week. it's not clear when they will be able to return home but both are doing very well. european leaders will hold emergency talks in france today to discuss greece's bailout package. yesterday the country's prime minister stunned his colleagues by announcing that he would let greek voters decide whether to accept this historic rescue plan. if it is defeated, greece may drop the european currency altogether and default on its debt which would put the european banking system in its entirety at risk of continuing

the crisis. the news triggered a sell-off on markets around the world. the dow fell nearly 300. nasdaq fell 77. president obama will also head to france tonight for tomorrow's opening of the g20 summit. the european debt crisis will likely be at the top of the agenda. the president is expected to meet with the presidents of france and germany. new on this wednesday morning the founder of wikileaks has lost his appeal against extradition to answer sex crime allegations back in sweden. a couple of hours ago london judges ruled that julian assange should be questioned over the alleged rape of one woman and the molestation of another. his lawyer says the sex was consensual. assange angered u.s. official last year after publishing classified documents on his website. the pentagon blasted the leak saying it put american troops at risk. a woman who accused businessman herman cain of sexual harassment in the 1990s

is thinking of going public. two women made such allegations a couple of decades ago when cain was head of the national restaurant association. now, the organization paid the women as part of a settlement. closing arguments today. lawyers on both sides of the manslaughter trial for michael jackson's doctor will prepare their closing arguments today down in l.a. dr. conrad murray did not testify in his defense yesterday. he is accused of giving the pop star a fatal dose of propofol. closing arguments are tomorrow. deliberation may begin friday. frank mccourt on the way out as the owner of the l.a. dodgers. the team and major league baseball official have finally agreed on a process to sell that baseball club. mlb took control of the dodgers during the nasty divorce between mccourt and his wife.

a statement last night said the blackstone group lp will manage the sail of the team. it turns out a solyndra severance package is good if you're the company's founder. he got nearly half million dollars before the solar company went bankrupt. in court documents, they show that the former ceo seen here giving president obama a tour of the company last year was fired july 1 almost two months before solyndra announced that he was leaving. the solar company went bankrupt in september after receiving a half billion dollars in federal loans and was touted by the white house a "green jobs creator." bank of america backing down after scrapping plans to charge people 5 bucks a month to use their debit cards. the bank's announcement follows a customer revolt. b. of a.'s competitors said they would not charge a similar fee. tech company that has made a name for itself with digital deals is going public.

groupon is set to announce its ipo tomorrow even though they have 50 million users around the world, it hasn't made a profit yet. the company expects to raise a half billion dollars from the offering. experts say this may redefine business plans for many silicon valley companies. >> a lot of high-profile companies, facebook, zynga are looking to see if it works. if it does, they will go public as well. >> the public offering is the biggest since google in 2004. this is a big story in hawaii and now in the nation. a couple was accused of stealing two chicken salad sandwiches. >> they just moved to hawaii from california and then child service took their 2-year-old daughter away. safeway called police after this pregnant mother ate a sandwich while she was shopping. she said she was starving. she paid for her groceries but forgot about the sandwiches.

information of over a thousand cardholders. an apology this morning after a security slip-up with a clipper card exposed the personal information of over 1,000 cardholders. yesterday an el cerrito man received an email from a private company that makes the clipper card. besides reminding him to update his payment information, it also included the personal email addresses of 1700 fellow users. >> the individual who normally handles this responsibility at the 1st of every month is away on vacation; consequently, there was a substitute doing that job and just failed to double-check. >> metropolitan transportation commission says credit card information was not released in the incident. san jose mayor chuck reed wants the city council to raise the tax on medical marijuana collectives from 7% to 10%. the "mercury news" says that would pay for a citywide vote on whether to repeal the city's

marijuana regulations. those regulations call for the number of pot clubs in the city to be whittled down to just 10. people in the industry are insisting that that is not workable. harold camping says he is embarrassed for his family radio ministry. that's because camping's end of the world predictions, well, as we all know, failed to come true. the 90-year-old man expected the "rapture" in may then october. he was wrong. the "chronicle" reports long time employees report that camping has resigned -- that his resignation sun true. we have been talking about the red flag warning with fires in the north bay now still looking at red flag warnings across the higher peaks in the bay area and east bay hills. some gusts over 40 miles per hour. so something to watch out for and be very careful this morning as the red flag warning

is staying up now until 9:00 in the morning. then winds subside with changes coming up. gusts very high this morning gusting to 45 over mount diablo and, of course, the humidity very low with the offshore wind. still, we are headed out the door today looking mostly clear, a few high clouds moving overhead. otherwise, looking good and those temperatures very mild to start out today. by the afternoon, temperatures very similar to yesterday. many of those numbers well into the 70s inland. you will see 70s inside the bay and lots of sunshine even out toward the coast. high pressure holding on for one last day. you have this low developing off the coastline. by tomorrow, that's going to drop in toward the bay area and we're talking about rain moving in and it looks like some unsettled weather and much cooler days ahead especially as we sail in toward the weekend. enjoy the sunshine today. it should be a gorgeous one. 76 in santa clara. 68 pacifica. 74 hayward. east bay numbers well into the

70s in many spots. napa valley looking nice at 75. 77 in livermore. and inside the bay 73 degrees in oakland and 69 degrees sunny in daly city. but big changes in the works. we have some rain moving in, probably about the middle of the morning tomorrow. you showers friday morning. then another storm system late saturday night into sunday morning. monday and tuesday look dry, but elizabeth, the storm door looks like it's opening up. that means you are going to be very, very busy in the coming weeks. >> we're all going to be very, very wet. all right, thank you, lawrence. they are trying to get in some last-minute roadwork because we have a lot of it on the roads now including up and down 880. to the maps, live look at the coliseum 880 near 66th and that roadwork from high street towards fruitvale this morning, various lanes blocked until 5:00 this morning. and same thing on westbound 237, 880 to great america

parkway various lanes blocked. according to caltrans, everything should be picked up by 5:00 but apparently it is still out there. so watch out for that. in the meantime only one northbound lane is getting by on the golden gate bridge. you can see the headlights there heading towards the toll plaza into san francisco. you will find some roadwork through novato on southbound 101 as you pass atherton. mass transit, you know, things could change. but right now everything is on time including for bart. but, of course, we have been talking about this strike, this plant protest around oakland. not sure what that will do. anticipate possible delays also for a.c. transit. muni, caltrain, ferries, everything else no delays. south bay everything is great come out of downtown san jose just a couple of headlights out of downtown on 280. that is traffic. back to you. >> thank you. deaths from prescription

painkillers are now at epidemic levels. more people are dying from prescription drugs than from heroin and cocaine combined. prescription drug overdoses have been a big problem for car crashes as a leading cause of preventable deaths in the country and users are starting young. >> usually around 11, 12, 13 years of age, they start dabbling. they may not even know what the name of the pill is and they take it. you know, you go from toddler to experimenter. >> 48 states including california have set up programs to track narcotic painkillers and the doctors prescribe them. the cdc says it is going to take some time to get kinks worked out of the system. ladies, if you like a glass of wine to unwind, it could also put you at a higher risk for breast cancer. a new study in the journal of the american medical association finds three to six alcoholic drinks a week showed an increase risk. the study shows that alcohol added to whatever risk a woman

already had for breast cancer. back to the ocean beach for some of the world's best surfers in the world. this is second day of the rip curl pro search surfing competition on the san francisco coast. one surfer high tailed it out of water yesterday when he said he saw a shark, the biggest fin he had ever seen coming right at him. competition though still runs through the week, weather and sharks permitting. a lot of folks out there at ocean beach. an update that. red-tailed hawk that survived a shot from a nail gun returns to the wild today. it had nail through its head when it was rescued last month at golden gate park. someone purposely shot it with a nail gun, it's believed. there is a $10,000 reward in the case. the hawk is back in the wild today, doing very well. hollywood starlet lindsay lohan returns to court today for a hearing that may lead to yet another jail sentence. a judge has already revoked her probation in two cases. she will decide if her failure to do community service

warrants more time behind bars. the mean girls star has been reporting to the l.a. morgue for janitorial work after she got kicked out of a women's shelter. reality tv star kim kardashian is apologizing to fans for her failed marriage. >> shocking. she filed for divorce from kris humphries the nba player monday after 72 days of wedded bliss. on her website she told her fans that she married for love. she also said, quote, would not have spent so much time on something just for a tv show. the lavish wedding was a two- hour special on the enetwork. she made $18 million from the coverage. >> that's just from the wetting. tv. >> what about all the gifts she got from everyone. >> seems like another million selling pictures. >> do you give those back or do you keep those? how does that work after three months? didn't work. here you go. >> i would keep them.
