your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. if you do not leave, you will be arrested. >> breaking news. chaos erupts in oakland. police move in on "occupy" protestors firing tear gas and flash-bang grenades and arrest dozens. >> good morning, everyone. cbs 5 photographers first on the scene as protestors started settling fires in the oakland streets. in fact, one of our photojournalist was hit by shrapnel. >> we begin with anne makovec, where protestors tried to overtake a vacant building overnight. good morning, anne. >> reporter: good morning. they did overtake it for a little while. they were able to set some fires in the street. i'm on 14th and broadway in downtown oakland. the real drama was 16th and telegraph where you can see the flashlights. we want to get to the video
4:31 am
that our photographer shot overnight. a harrowing experience, a lot of violence, almost 50 people arrested after a standoff started at this vacant building that the protestors were trying to take over. this happened around 11:00 last night. i'm here with our chief photographer rick villaroman who was there after this broke out a little bit after 11:00. rick, thanks for being here so early this morning. tell us about what you saw and the fires that started. >> well, it was complete pandemonium. the cops moved in with tear gas first. then there was a flash-bangs. bonfire got set. and it was complete chaos from that point. >> reporter: tell us about this bonfire. it was in the middle of the street. we're talking about garbage, wood pallets. >> at 16th and telegraph, the protestors took over a building, barricade themselves in with garbage and pallets. then once the police moved in they set everything on fire. >> reporter: when we're talking about taking over the building,
4:32 am
they were inside the building. do you have any guess as to how many people were in there? >> inside the building there were probably about 15 or 20 people some on the roof some inside. and there were maybe 200 people outside in the streets. >> reporter: how many police officers -- i know it's hard to guess this when they are rolling up to the scene in buses. >> it was a huge show of force, probably 300 police officers. and they seemed to come out of nowhere. >> reporter: now, the firing of this tear gas and these flash bangs, obviously you got hit by something. we're not sure what? >> right. i'm not sure what it was but suddenly my arm just started burning and i got these welts here. so... >> reporter: so it almost appears as if the fire of these less than lethal weapons by police was a little willy- nilly? could you describe it as that? >> reporter: they hit the ground, bounce up 5 feet and
4:33 am
just explode. it's -- a flash-bang. it scares the heck out of you and that's what it's designed to do to get you to back off. >> reporter: they were in there for hours. when we got here this morning around 3:30, the police had barricaded the road off at that point. and there were still some people around but did it seem to disperse quickly enough? >> no. it didn't. i mean, the actual chaos lasted about a good 20 minutes for my colleague alex montano and myself. and the standoff lasted for several hours after that. >> reporter: anything else that you want us to know right now? >> no. i'm just glad it's over. >> reporter: yeah. we're glad that you're okay for sure. just want to show you the other scene that we're monitoring now which is the encampment over there. that's frank ogawa plaza at 14th and broadway. excuse us there. shot being blocked real briefly there by a garbage truck that's going to the other scene right now. the encampment remains -- there had been some rumors that police would break it up at
4:34 am
frank ogawa plaza. that is untouched. there doesn't appear to have been any trouble there. and a lot of the protestors over on 16th and telegraph have returned to the camp. it seems peaceful there at this point. so it sounds like i luckily missed a lot of the trouble here on the streets but again, 50 people are rested, a lot of trouble overnight, 50 people arrested and police continuing to monitor the situation. >> i was going to ask. what is the police presence there now after a wild night last night apparently? >> reporter: yeah. well, when we got here, they had all of broadway here blocked off before we get to the next block at telegraph. and there were, you know, police in riot gear lined up blocking the entire street and then protestors standing on the other side of them. and within about the last 20 minutes, those police have moved off and then they appear to be cleaning up the scene over there. so it really has changed in just the past half hour. >> anne, such a huge --
4:35 am
>> reporter: i don't exactly know where the officers are height now. >> anne, such a huge disturbance overnight. is anything planned today by the protestors or are they at least done for now. >> reporter: you know, it's hard to say at this point. but it also does seem like the violence here and the fires being set that that was done by a rogue group of protestors that the general "occupy oakland" folks do not want to associate themselves with. rick, who we just heard from, was telling me about some of the trouble between some of the "occupy" protestors and these people that appeared to be trying to start these riots, that there was a lot of in- fight there is where a lot of protestors were trying to stop them from lighting the fires and there was some physical altercations when it came to that. >> thank you, anne makovec live in oakland. police hope the had public

can track down the thugs responsible for all that vandalism last night. investigators believe a loosely organized splinter group is responsible for most of the damage, breaking windows and as you can see here, hurling tables and chairs. it is a tactic known as black bloc. the anarchists in oakland are accused of damaging a whole foods grocery store near lake merritt yesterday and at one point, peaceful protestors formed a human chain in an effort to curb the black bloc activity. >> this is not sanctioned by the "occupy oakland" movement. it's not what it's about. this is not what it's about. >> we are aware of people that are bent on causing problems. we are going to be taking steps to address those problems. >> hammers were used to destroy seven-foot-tall panes of glass at a bank of america at kaiser center. automatic teller machines were also damaged and nearby u.s. bank and chase bank branches
4:37 am
were also vandalized. oakland police in the meantime have sent cbs 5 this photo of the black bloc anarchists which they received from a citizen. investigators say more citizen photos could help them find who is responsible for the vandalism. officials at the port of oakland are hoping they can get operations back to business by 7:00 this morning. thousands of people blocked the entrance to the port. there were some confrontations there as well as port workers tried to get past the protestors. but port officials say it was peaceful there. some workers were frustrated over losing a day's pay to the protestors, though. >> i completely sympathize with them actually you know? >> but by blocking them, by being part of the movement to block them from going to work, how does that help?! >> that's a good question. maybe at the time hurting them economically may make it difficult for them right now but the idea is in the long term this will pay off. >> but the oakland chamber of commerce says the "occupy" movement is backfiring.
4:38 am
port officials say the shutdown will cut deeply into the $8.5 million the port generates every day. two people are recovering after being hit by a car during the protest in downtown oakland. cell phone video shows a protestor banging on the hood of a silver mercedes in the middle of the intersection at broadway and 11th street. that's when witnesses say that the driver tried to speed off and a man and a woman were hit. we did have a camera there moments later and saw the man on the ground. the mercedes stopped again and angry crowd of 100 people or so gathered around the car screaming at the driver. >> he was coming through the intersection and walking that way. the car rushed me and sped off. i guess he hit other people. >> the crowd was further enraged when bart police officers questioned the driver and then let him go.
