moving through but looks like today catching a break from the stormy weather temperatures in the 50s in many parts by the afternoon, low 60s in some spots. we'll have more on the extended forecast coming up. right now let's check on the roads with elizabeth. >> we are hoping for lighter traffic today and the rest of the week people taking extended vacation but for right now you are good to go heading towards the bay bridge. coming up with roadwork that could slow you down. >> thank you. we begin with an incredible rescue in san francisco. >> a man is alive thanks to some heroic strangers who helped save him from a burning car. you can see the car right here engulfed in flames there just after 1:00 this morning near 13th and folsom in south of market. three people figured up a fallen roadside in the area that broke the windows on the car, then the first police officer on the scene used a knife to cut the man's seatbelt. >> there was a cab driver and several citizens attempting to break the window open and along

with members of the department, they were finally able to free the driver from the vehicle seconds before it burst into flames and was fully engulfed. >> police say it appears the car hit a light fixture in the center divide before it crashed. the driver is being treated for minor burns at san francisco general hospital. also, oakland's last remaining "occupy" camp is closed shut down in the middle of the night. gil diaz is in oakland. this raid was actually peaceful, wasn't it? >> reporter: it was. police say there were no injuries, no use of force and i know it's a little dark behind me at snow park but i took a walk through the park and there definitely isn't anyone here except for this group right here "occupying" the city sidewalk a handful of them just hanging out here. i spoke to them earlier, asked them where are they going to go, what are they going to do, they don't know what they are going to do next, whether they

are going to go to another camp. some said they will stay here until they are ready to leave. when this early-morning raid happened there was about 10 to 15 tents still pitched at snow park. when police came they cleared it quickly and peacefully. now, police were quite busy throughout the weekend. they also cleared another oakland camp at 19th and telegraph on sunday morning as you see here. that too was a peaceful clearing according to oakland police. now, police gave demonstrators there about 20 minutes to disperse. there were no arrests, no use of force and no injuries there, as well. i just spoke to one of the sergeants here at snow park and asked him what they are going to do with this group. they say they are going to keep an eye on them to be sure they leave peacefully and they said they are going to routinely patrol the area throughout the day and also in the coming days to be sure that no one else camps here again.

but, you know, the protest may be the -- "occupiers" might be done but maybe the protests may not be over. seems like the "occupy oakland" organizers have formally announced a total west coast port shutdown on december 12. back to you guys. >> all right. thank you. and in san francisco, protestors blocked market and drum streets after a police raid closed a camp there. police in riot gear kept watch over protestors who shut down two blocks of traffic. they also forced muni to reroute bus lines yesterday evening. daniel ellsberg who released the pentagon papers decades ago told protestors it is important to be nonviolent. >> it shows that we can use the power of withdrawing our support from wrongful system and from wrong elections without being threatening, without terrorizing, without being violent, not like the violence being used against us. let all the violence be on the other side. >> san francisco police removed

a small encampment on market street early sunday morning. six protestors were arrested for interfering with the officers. police have not made any moves to close the main camp at justin herman plaza. and more fallout over the pepper spraying of protestors at uc-davis. the school's chancellor plans to meet with protestors today amid calls for her resignation. [ screaming ] >> videos of the incident last friday now have more than 2 million views online. university's chancellor has ordered an investigation. two of the officers allegedly involved are now on paid administrative leave. the president of the uc says he will meet with all 10 campus chancellors about this incident. a man set to be arraigned today for the murder of vallejo police officer james capoot. henry albert smith, jr., will appear at 1:30 this in solano county superior court. hundreds gathered outside city hall yesterday to honor the

officer. 19-year veteran was fatally shot thursday during pursuit after a bank robber at the springstowne center. among those at the vigil girls he coached on the vallejo high school basketball team. >> my first job, he took me to the orientation and then when they cancelled the orientation he came right back across town and got me and said, i'll take you to the next one, too. >> he wasn't just a coach. he was a father figure to most us. the stuff he teached us, i'll never forget. he was like a second father figure to me. >> people in the community have also been playing flowers outside the police station. there is a trust fund for his wife and three daughters. jury selection starts today in the new trial involving johannes mehserle. he is the former bart police officer who fatally shot an unarmed passenger in the back and served two years in jail for involuntary manslaughter. now he is on trial in a separate civil case. a man is seeking damages against mehserle and four other

police officers in an incident in 2000 at the coliseum station. the officer said the men shouted verbal abuse and advanced with clenched fists. all lanes on 101 in sausalito after a crash involving a chp around 8:30 last night near the spencer exit closing the freeway for a time. the officer was responding to a dui call when he lost control of his cruiser. it skidded several hundred feet, flipped over and caught fire. the flames were so intense that the ammunition inside the officer's guns began exploding. the officer actually got himself out of the wreckage and was sent to the hospital as a precaution. south san francisco police are hunting for an armed dangerous man. alvin lewis is wanted for holding family members at gunpoint at their home on spruce avenue last night. they managed to escape.

his sister was shot in the hand. luis was last seen in a white 1993 mercedes wearing a black knit cap, black jacket and bluejeans. a man suspected of planning bombings in new york city had been under surveillance for a year according to investigators talking about the weekend arrest of jose pimental. the 27-year-old manhattan man is accused of plotting to bomb police cars and post offices and to attack u.s. servicemembers upon their return from overseas. investigators describe pimental as an al qaeda sympathizers with no connection to a terrorist group. >> the suspect was a so-called lone wolf motivated by his own resentment of the presence of american troops in iraq and afghanistan as well as inspired by al qaeda propaganda. >> pimental was denied bail and remains in custody in new york. his attorney says the man had a public online profile something not consistent with somebody that is planning a terror attack. monday morning and kind of

next weekend. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic now with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. right now just dealing with roadwork including a new spot we haven't seen very often down the eastshore freeway from pill willow towards san pablo so sounds like three lanes are blocked from hercules to richmond until 5 a.m. again, that's according to our friends at caltrans. eastbound 4 one lane blocked by railroad avenue until 7 a.m. westbound 4 through antioch in the commute direction so far looks fine. a bridge roundup. so far bridges nice and quiet including this live look across the san mateo bridge. you can see the right side of your screen is westbound 92, eastbound traffic looks good heading off to the high-rise. to the south bay not much roadwork. so everything is quiet so far coming out of downtown san jose. we are like i said crossing our fingers for a lighter-than- normal commute. everything is on time for bart, ace, muni and caltrain and your ferries to start off your morning drive. back to you. >> that looks like a black hole out there. >> 280 in san jose?

committee is a super failure in its effort to reach a deficit reduction deal. the bipartisan panel is examined to announce today that it is unable to compromise on how to balance spending cuts and tax increases. the goal was to find $1.2 trillion in the next decade but today is the deadline for an agreement with both sides still pointing fingers. >> there was an unwillingness to cut any kind of spending at unless there was a huge tax increase. >> the wealthiest of americans, those who earn over a million dollars every year, have to share too. and that line in the sand we have not seen any republicans willing to cross yet. >> failure to come up with a plan will trigger a set of automatic across the board spending cuts. that will mean a trillion dollars less for the pentagon budget as well as domestic programs for nine-years beginning in 2013. 4:44 now. a group of california billionaires and political figures wants to put a tax referendum on the state ballot raising $10 billion a year.

now, their proposal would boost revenue for education and pay down the state debt. but it would lower california's personal income tax and sales tax rates. the proposal calls for a 5% tax on services that are not currently taxed such as legal work and accounting. google chairman eric schmidt is among the backers. asian markets fell on a sharp slowdown in economic growth. wall street is preparing for a short week due to the thanksgiving holiday on thursday. the market is coming off its worst weekly loss since september. the dow fell nearly 3% last week. the nasdaq lost 4%. and gasoline is a little bit cheaper as the thanksgiving holiday approaches. the national average is down about 5 cents over the last couple weeks. right here in the bay area, the aaa finds a gallon of regular costs $3.74 in san jose. oakland pays 3.76. here in san francisco, it's

a senate committee will hold questions about the validity of bay bridge safety inspections will be aired this week in sacramento. a senate committee will hold hearings in the wake of a newspaper investigation that found a state inspector on the project had falsified findings on some of his other jobs. now, the inspector and his boss were fired. caltrans defends safety of the new quake-proof span and denied anything is being withheld. chairman of the committee telling cbs 5 the truth will come out. >> it is a tough culture to crack. i have been in elected office involved in transportation for a long time. it's hard to get right to it and to the truth. my argument to them is just tell us the truth. it's going to come out sooner or later and the public demands that. >> the state's toll bridge program oversight committee has also been critical of caltrans and has asked state seismic safety experts to review the questionable inspections. a massive fire in reno is fully contained but crews are watching hotspots. more than 30 homes were

destroyed and 4,000 homes were saved by firefighters. snow helped crews get a handle on the 2,000 acre fire which started early friday. no official cause yet but firefighters are suspecting arcing power lines started the fire. this prime oceanfront property is now in the ocean in los angeles. a street in the san pedro area collapsed when a storm hit southern california yesterday. amazingly no one was hurt. but the area has been closed since 25-foot-deep cracks appeared in the soil last spring. the mayor is asking people to stay away from that area. >> if you have a home in that area, my guess is it's probably not going to sell for a while. >> that's awful. >> tough, oh, my goodness. how about some weather to kick off your monday? let's kick it over to mr. lawrence karnow. >> hope you had a great weekend. a little wet out there. >> it was. >> cold. >> but now things drying out. and cold. starting out chilly it morning again but no rain out the door. doesn't look like it will rain for a couple of days.

outside low clouds moving by and 40s. plenty of sunshine and a few passing clouds and temperatures running in the 50s and low 60s later. so not hot but it should stay dry all day long. right now 39 degrees in the napa valley, 47 in livermore, 41 degrees in santa rosa. about 47 degrees into oakland. weak system moving to the north right now but we are going to stay high and dry as high pressure builds back in. the ridge strong enough to hole these storm systems at bay for a short time but eventually toward the holiday we have a chance of more rain coming our way. so a dry break at least for today. some cool days ahead. and then a chance to return to rainfall. so here we go. so plan on 60 in santa clara today, 59 and sunshine in san jose. 54 in pacifica. east bay numbers up into the upper 50s in many spots by the afternoon. and inside the bay you will find 56 degrees in san leandro

about 55 in kentfield and about 56 degrees in santa rose. next couple of days looking okay. maybe even patchy dense fog in the valleys then on wednesday late in the day and i know that's a big travel day not only here but around the country, yes, it looks like a cold front is going to bring with it some rainfall could see some rain early on thanksgiving day not a total washout and then as it moves through a good day to hang outside with your family and friends. >> watch the 49ers, ravens, a big game. >> bad timing on your part. >> i know. really all those people traveling. that's going to be tough. >> on thanksgiving though sometimes it's nice because it brings the family inside and all that kind of thing. >> you mean they have to talk? >> yeah. this morning. it's dry. we are off to a nice start for our monday morning commute. so if you are work today, at least that's the good news. here's a live look at the traffic across the golden gate bridge. it looks great in both directions. overnight roadwork could slow you down but it's not too bad. right now seeing some lanes blocked through hercules and into richmond if you are coming down the eastshore freeway that westbound 80 commute. now, according to caltrans they should be picking this up by about 5:00 but once again once you get past san pablo then looks great through berkeley into emeryville and we have this. this is ongoing roadwork. we have been seeing this out there for a whileful the eastbound lane of highway 4 that left lane is blocked there approaching railroad avenue until 7 a.m. now, westbound 4 traffic if you are heading towards pittsburgh into concord looks great and bridges are quiet, as well. westbound 92 so far pretty nice start to the morning drive and

eastward toward hayward. 13 minutes in both directions. the milpitas commute so far looks good. like i satisfied, we don't have too many problems out there now. westbound 237 pretty quiet all the way towards san jose. and if you are coming out of downtown san jose, all green on our sensors this morning from the guadalupe parkway all the way out towards the 880/17 inchange. nice and quiet all the way through towards cupertino and, of course, we checked in with mass transit as soon as we got in the door this morning and mass transit, bart, systemwide on time. bart, ace, muni and caltrain and your ferries are all on time. remember kcbs once you do hit the roads. they're our radio partners. and you can find them at 740-am and 106.9-fm. that's traffic and weather. back to you. >> easy-peasy, right? >> no problem.
