huh? >> yeah. clouds rolling in. i don't know if you noticed that, but yeah, you know, a lot of folks travel on this day. we have a cold front approaching the bay area. the good news is it's not going to come until late in the day. so i think if you can get away a little early today you will be okay but you could see some showers developing toward the evening commute. how will that affect your thanksgiving? we'll talk more about that in a moment. right now check on traffic with elizabeth. >> it is dry for now and traffic is really light still approaching the bay bridge toll plaza. we are hoping for lighter traffic for the morning commute. may get busy obviously later on. big travel day for a lot of folks. also, bart is going to be running longer trains so we'll talk more mass transit show you some other bay area roads coming up in a little bit. >> my guess is you won't be too busy today. >> let's hope so. "occupy sf" protestors may soon have a new place to camp. they are being offered a site

on mission street. anne makovec is in san francisco with more on the mayor's compromise. >> reporter: will the people here camped at justin herman plaza who have been here for weeks agree to move to this new site? it is on mission street between 15th and 16th streets. we stopped by there this morning. this is some video of that site. it's the old phoenix continuation high school a fenced-off lot surrounded by portable buildings. the city said they would have access to a bathroom and maybe even a portable to hold meetings. the city's public works director took some of the "occupiers" on a tour of this site on saturday. the next step would take the matter to board of education. this new possibility comes as pressure increases on the camp at justin herman plaza. the city raided some side camps on market street this weekend and now some nearby businesses are threatening legal action on the camp at justin herman

plaza. the campers are concerned they might be out of sight, out of mind out mission street and may prefer to move to another area. >> i have to ask you a question. is the mayor's office worried this might be an open invitation for a number of homeless to seek refuge as well not that they haven't already? >> reporter: right. that is always a possibility. that is the status of a lot of people camped here right now. one of the benefits of the new site according to the city is the "occupiers" would have access to a fence that they could keep out some of the more unsavory characters that have caused problems in this encampment in the past. >> we'll see if it works. thank you. oakland police say some protestors moved back to frank ogawa plaza after being ousted from their latest camp. activists who set up tents on a private vacant lot in west oakland monday packed up last night. some of them stayed in the area

as police watched. the activists said the property owner okayed the occupation but the "chronicle" reports this morning that the owner says that that's not true and she wants them out. this morning, thousands are calling for the resignation of the chancellor of uc-davis after the pepper spraying protest. they aired their frustration at a packed town hall meeting last night. >> i want to know what you're doing right now today for the students to have a right to protest. >> students blasted chancellor linda katehi for allowing extreme police measures against a peaceful demonstration. the campus police chief as well as both cops using the pepper spray last week are now on leave. and a former campus cop is speaking out against one of the those officers. calvin chang says the university knew lieutenant john pike was a loose cannon because chang sued him years ago for an antigay slur. >> i had reported to my

supervisor who referred to me as a [ bleep ]. the university did nothing about it. they promoted john pike up. >> that lawsuit ended in a $240,000 settlement. uc officials say former los angeles police chief william bratton will head an investigation into this controversial pepper spraying of students. he also led an investigation into a 2007 may day confrontation in l.a. when police used batons and fired rubber bullets at demonstrators. they expect him to report his findings within a month. and former bart police officer johannes mehserle is expected to testify in a federal trial today. mehserle and four other bart police officers are on trial. they are accused of assaulting a man at the coliseum bart station in 2008. that was a couple of months before mehserle fatally shot bart passenger oscar grant. 4:35 now. a quarantine could be lifted in time for thanksgiving tomorrow at the largest nursing home in marin county. a norovirus outbreak began

about 2.5 weeks ago at the country villa healthcare center in novato. since then about 80 residents and staff members have come down with a gastrointestinal illness. to prevent the illness from spreading further, residents are supposed to stay in their rooms and visitors are not allowed. >> i would like to see my husband and that's frustrating. but i come over and drop him off his favorite things. >> norovirus causes nausea, die rerequest and vomiting and can be fatal in some cases. two people at the country villa had to be hospitalized but have since recovered. nearly 1,000 people turned out to danville to honor a hometown son killed in action in afghanistan. they met at the veterans memorial in oak hill park to remember 19-year-old lance corporal josh corral. friends and family said they hope everyone thinks about the troops serving overseas over the holiday season. and in vallejo officer jim

capoot was remembered last night as someone who made a difference in his community. he coached girls basketball at vallejo high and many of the young women who he men toward attended a prayer vigil last night. officer capoot was shot and killed last week while chasing a bank robbery suspect. they could be the youngest carjacking suspects ever. three boys and a girl ages 13 and 14 are in the alameda county juvenile justice center. but they might be tried as adults. they are accused of four armed carjackings this month in various locations in san leandro including bay fair mall and two bart stations. one victim thought it was a joke. >> based on the age of the person on the other en of the gun, the suspects and asked him, is this a joke? the first suspect said it wasn't. >> police say a 13-year-old girl provided the weapon a bb gun that looks like a semi- automatic beretta pistol. police say each of the four teens did at least one carjacking and they did it to

go joyriding. 4:37. the biggest travel day of the year. we have some rain. >> hopefully not until the afternoon, right, lawrence? >> if you can sneak out of town early, that's the time to do it. we have a storm in the pacific that will visit the bay area a little later on. already beginning to see the clouds make their way across our skies this morning but the rain is holding off. the cold front will slide into the bay area and will be a slow mover for the better part of the day. 4 a.m., the clouds gathering outside just a bit maybe a couple of showers ahead of the cold front through the day. most of those will be in the north bay. but even by 7:00 this evening, you see that main front still located in the north bay in the latter part of the evening, it's going to drop down overnight and wet overnight. tomorrow morning a wet start to thanksgiving day and then it will turn more towards shower and dry by the afternoon. highs today will be in the 50s and a few 60s outside today. but do plan on some wet weather

especially in the latter part of the day and overnight tonight. that's a look at weather. let's check on traffic now with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. we're talking roadwork once again. this time, it's in unincorporated san mateo county near bunker hill north of highway 92. it's actually both directions northbound and southbound 280. we are seeing a little bit of slowing on our sensors. it should be picked up within the next 20 minutes or so. to the south bay coming out of downtown san jose, exceptionally light this morning northbound 280 heading out of downtown san jose but we are seeing a couple of areas of roadwork that connector ramp from northbound 280 to northbound 880. that question mark means they actually may have just wrapped up construction there. but you will see some slowing on our sensors and another construction tab. that is both directions of 880 between old bayshore highway and 280. that continues until later on this morning. outside here's a leave look at the bay bridge toll plaza. all the approaches are nice and light. and mass transit is off to a great start if you are taking a bart train towards sfo.

chance to become citizens. >> people respond to incentives and if you can become a permanent resident of the united states by coming here illegally, you will do so. >> i don't see how the -- the party that says it's the party of the family is going to adopt an immigration policy which destroys families that have been here a quarter century. >> candidates also talked about the economy, a congressional supercommittee's failure to agree on a deficit reduction plan and with no agreement across-the-board cuts will take effect including defense department cuts which most but not all the republicans opposed. >> everything has to be on the table. the defense department has to be on the table, for heaven's sake. >> primary season kicks off in six-week from now. the iowa caucuses are the first ones to vote. in san jose now, where a big concern over budgets are dmv naturing. city administrators -- are dmv naturing. city administratorrers said an emergency needs to be declared because of the ongoing deficit

problem. they say an emergency declaration would justify reducing the soaring costs of city worker pensions and the city council is set to vote on this december 6 and possibly call for a special election in march for a pension reform ballot measure. electric carmaker tesla is about to give the local job market a local about to hire 400 workers thanks to a half billion-dollar federal low. the company will begin production on a new electric sedan next year at the old nummi plant in fremont. a lot of laid-off nummi workers are hoping to return to the site as tesla employees. and no takers. that's the story of bankrupt solar panel maker solyndra who tries to find somebody to take over its operations in the east bay. now, it says no qualified bidders have come forward for the whole company. so its assets might be sold separately. meanwhile, the labor department says solyndra went bankrupt because of overseas competition, not because of a

unrest over the country' egyptian protestors and government forces clashed for the fifth day on cairo's tahrir square. unrest over the country's leadership is now blamed for at least 38 deaths. the military has been leading the country through its transitional phase after president hosni mubarak was ousted several months ago. military leaders promised to hold a presidential election early next year but protestors want something done immediately. it's not clear if three american exchange students arrested during the protest will be charged. the students are accused of throwing firebombs yesterday at security forces at tahrir square. they are studying at the american university at cairo. they are 19-year-old gregory porter from pennsylvania, 21- year-old luke gates from indiana, and 19-year-old derek sweeney from jefferson city, missouri. a dramatic new video of a chopper crash where the pilot walked away. we want to show you this because it happened in new zealand. it's amazing.

a helicopter was helping install a christmas tree for display. the main rotor hit the cable there. look at that. and just collapses. now, the rear section of the helicopter broke. the whole thing tumbled to the ground. the pilot had 20 years of experience. he is fine. amazingly no one was hurt, although it was a very close call. >> man that one guy did you see him run across? he was really lucky. >> good reflexes. >> i guess. the lifeguard who pulled natalie wood out of the water three decades ago says she could have been saved. he told the "l.a. times" that she could have survived if the search operation was launched earlier. now, she went missing from a yacht trip with her husband and christopher walken. the l.a. sheriff's department reopened the case last week a flying chunk of space junk was no problem for the international space station. scientists were concerned about a 4" piece of chinese weather satellite that was going to pass by sometime this morning. contact could cause some

serious damage even though it's small. but upon further assessment, nasa determined it would not be such a close call after all. 4:50. wondering what the weather is going to be like, people cook, traveling. >> that is right. >> important stuff. >> it could be a soaker this evening. this morning, cloudy start to the day. patchy valley fog, as well. temperatures not bad in the 40s and the 50s. by this afternoon, you're going to see a chance of some showers, most of that north of the golden gate bridge. otherwise a lot of clouds thickening up throughout the day and toward the evening hours, a better chance of rain. so a cold front on final approach off the coastline right now. already bringing some rain to far northern california. this is going to sag to the

south throughout the day. going to be a wet night around the bay area this evening. if you plan to catch a flight out of sfo today, mostly cloudy, south winds at 20. don't expect too many delays there. looking good. high of about 60 degrees. and moving across the country, houston is checking in at 72 degrees. 67 should be okay in denver and already in chicago at 47 degrees, touch and go in chicago 56 expecting some showers there. so things going to be unsettled as you make your way across parts of the country and really in northern california. the further north you go with the storm insurgents the better chance you will run into some rainfall. i think for the better part of the day mostly cloudy skies in sacramento at 61. high country looking okay if you can get away early on but later on tonight, things will change as the cold front moves in. temperatures 50s and 60s outside with the clouds rolling in so not a washout today but offered to tonight, rain likely all around the bay area and looks like showers continuing as we head in toward

thanksgiving day. partly cloudy toward friday and then over the weekend looks like we'll see drying conditions and warmer weather but it looks like that storm coming through is not at a bad time. if you can sneak away a little early today. but tonight gets dicey and expecting showers continuing tomorrow morning. >> it's only 50 million people moving around today. >> i know. there's so many people. so i'm saying if you can, do it earlier if you can. >> or stay home. >> hopefully still clear now, elizabeth, right? >> so far it is very light. we have no incident on the roads so maybe people taking extra long holidays. in fact, here's live look at what it looks like out there. no problems towards downtown oakland's past the coliseum. drive time at the bay bridge still 15 minutes between 238 and the maze may see. not too many accidents on the roadway. they are doing the lane change nows across the golden gate bridge but traffic is fine in all directions northbound and southbound 101 through marin county into san francisco. mass transit yeah, a lot of people big travel day today.

bart is running actually longer trains out towards oakland international airport and sfo so everything is on time so far for bart. ace train one no delays. muni, caltrain, you ferries. by the way, bart is also running longer trains for all the shoppers on friday. tomorrow they are running on a weekend schedule. elsewhere, let's go out towards the south bay showing you traffic coming out of downtown san jose on 280. things look great here. i mention some overnight roadwork. it's still out there. still seeing slowing on our sensors up and down 880 between 280 and old bayshore highway. this is ongoing roadwork. now it if have commuted across that stretch at this time of the morning. san mateo bridge is the commute direction. westbound 92. like i satisfied, not any major problems on any of our bridges. quiet. and for silicon valley commuters, westbound 237 we are crossing our fingers for lighter traffic all morning but we'll continue to watch it let you know. remember kcbs once you do hit the roads. they're our radio partners. and you can find them at 740-am

and 106.9-fm. >> thank you. it's 4:53 now. this morning in healthwatch, there is more evidence that there may be health benefits to drinking coffee. researchers from the harvard school of public health say that coffee may protect women against endometrial cancer. their study found drinking more than four cups of coffee a day reduced cancer of that type by 25%. previous studies show coffee may lower the risk of breast cancer an prostate cancer. eating canned fruit may significantly increase your levels of bpa. another harvard study finds that people who eat a serving of canned soup a day for five days have a more than 1,000 percent increase in bisphenol a in their urine. it's been found in the lining of cans and is linked to heart disease, diabetes and obesity. >> that caveman diet is look pretty good right now. toxic chemicals and choking hazards are two reasons not to
