credit and debit card readers have been tampered with at 19 bay area stores. they discovered them in the self checkout lanes. they store the information for days until perps retrieve it. the readers have been replaced and lucky beefed up security to every card reader in all 234 stores. still, the customers we spoke with are apprehensive. >> i was always a little worried anyway. so i tried not to use those unless i absolutely had to. but i guess that kind of confirms my suspicions. it's not really trustworthy. >> lucky doesn't any any case of money being stolen from bank accounts but recommends shoppers check their statements for fraud. no survivors in the wreckage of a small plane that crashed in arizona. a distant image. fiery crash, watch it here, captured by a webcam fixed on the superstition mountain. this is a little east of

phoenix. three adults, three children were believed on board that twin engine plane when it went down in the mountains last night. >> i looked up and i saw this fireball and it rose up. and then all of a sudden, kapoof, boom. that's when it spread whatever fuel and everything all over the place. >> the terrain near the crash site is so rugged and so steep, would-be rescuers had to be lowered by helicopter and then hiked down to the wreckage. so far, the body of one child has been recovered. the plane's flight originated in mesa, arizona. the pilot of american airline jet had to make an emergency landing last night at l.a.x. flight 10 had 164 people on board. the boeing 767 had just taken off from new york so -- rather, for new york kennedy airport when the crew smelled smoke. the pilot did a u-turn, landed safely in l.a.

no word on what caused the smoke. a san francisco bicyclistran a red light and caused a deadly wreck pleads not guilty to a misdemeanor vehicular manslaughter charge. he was riding along the embarcadero in july when he hit a woman in a crosswalk. the 68-year-old woman died a month later. no drugs and alcohol were in his system and he has no criminal record. but the d.a. says he needs to be held accountable. >> we are trying to send a message. we have a problem of really bad behavior of bicyclists, pedestrians an motorists in the city. a red light means stop. >> eng faces a year in jail if convicted. he will be back in court next month. a danville man is turning grief into action. robert pack is gathering signatures for a ballot initiative for a tax on prescription pills. eight years his son and

daughter were killed by a driver who blacked out from abusing prescription medicine. pack's proposed tax would pay for a state program to track doctors who prescribe large quantities of pills. >> it's a quarter of a cent tax on each narcotic pill sold in california but the tax is paid by the drug manufacturers when they distribute it into california. >> pack says the tax would raise $7 million a year for the pill tracking program that's facing budget cuts. he has until april 19 to collect half million signatures to get it on the ballot. more bay area headlines, damaged homes from the march landslide in san pablo are now the subject of a new legal fight. three homeowners have filed a lawsuit against the city of san pablo. they claim that over the years, the city's design an maintenance of drainage contributed to the slide.

it names 6 other homeowners as co-defendants saying negligent property upkeep was contributory. a quarantine is lifted at a nursing home. the country villa healthcare center in novato was closed after 80 residents and staff members got the norovirus. the outbreak was discovered earlier this month. county health officials allowed the facility to return to normal operations last night just in time for thanksgiving. san francisco has one of the homeless populations in the nation but many of them will eat well on thanksgiving thanks for a volunteer program in place for decades. gil diaz reports from glide memorial where they are preparing thousands of meals. >> reporter: good morning. happy thanksgiving to you and happy thanksgiving to all of you who are watching right now. and hopefully you have something to be thankful for this year. we are outside the glide headquarters on ellis where they are getting ready to feed

more than 5,000 people this year. to tell us more is jean one of the supervisors. good morning. >> good morning. how are you? >> reporter: good. it's breezy but we'll get through it. it's a day you must be looking forward to every year. >> yes. thanksgiving it our kickoff to all the holidays. we have several holiday events for the people of the tenderloin and this is the kickoff so it's always exciting so we are ready to go. >> reporter: it starts at 7:00. volunteers come in at 6 and you have a lot of volunteers i understand. >> we have over 500 volunteers coming in today. and lots of volunteers coming in for the whole season to help us serve the people of the tenderloin and san francisco community. >> there is a lot of homeless people here in the bay area. have you seen services change this past year especially with the economy that we're going through? >> sure. we have a lot more demand for our services and that ranges from just coming in for a meal to healthcare upstairs and also

for shelter, reservations, and we're a reservation station here in the city and rental assistance so there's a lot of demand for our assistance now. >> reporter: have you seen more families coming for you service? >> we have. so we started a resource center here in the last year and a half in conjunction with our child care center and we are seeing a lot more families in need. >> reporter: i know you're booked up with volunteers and that's a good sign. what else can our viewers do to help you this season? >> right now, if you go online to glide.org to our give section, you can make a cash donation which we can always use. we have volunteer shifts for the rest of the season so you're welcome to sign up there for a volunteer shift and also weed into new unwrap toys this. year we have a toy drive and have a shortage of toys so we are starting our drive early this year. >> reporter: thank you for joining us this morning. hopefully we'll get the help

you need. >> you said 5,000 people? when do they start lining up? >> reporter: they probably start lining up -- breakfast starts at 7:00. so they will probably be here within an hour. then after breakfast, the thanksgiving dinner is at 9:00. i know it's a little early but they serve from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. >> very good. thank you, gil diaz live here in the city. thanks. an estimated 3.5 million people are lining the streets of new york right now. they are gearing up for the 85th annual macy's thanksgiving day parade here. it begins 6:00 pacific time so it's coming up shortly . the festivities in manhattan include more than 40 balloons, 27 floats, 1600 cheerleaders, whole bunch of bands and you name it. parade coverage on cbs 5 begins at 9:00 this morning and there was a lot of talk about whether those balloons would go up. but i guess things settled in new york. you can't have the macy's thanksgiving day parade without the balloons school that would

have been really disappointing. >> it's a little cool and wet. it's that holiday weather that we all like and definitely hold the umbrella outside this morning because we are seeing scattered showers throughout most neighborhoods this morning and we'll continue to see that wet weather into the next couple of hours but the good news is this isn't going to be a washout. light to moderate showers in some locations and this afternoon we'll dry out. first union city, fremont, palo alto, milpitas getting wet weather this morning. up to the north as well we are seeing showers in pleasanton and livermore. before your weekend we'll be dry. that's the good news but for today you will have to hold on to the umbrella and the raincoat, as well. we are seeing two areas of low pressure that are passing through a slow moving cold front and that's going to bring us those raindrops through the morning hours today. and temperatures this afternoon slightly below where we should be for this time of year but not too cold outside. we are going to make it to 59 in oakland, same for fremont. fairfield at 58.

we are breaking into the 60s in some locations, 61 a high in mountain view and san jose topping out at 60, livermore making it to 60 today, as well. now, we'll dry out for friday, saturday and sunday. so if you are sitting outside for black friday, you don't have to worry about seeing any raindrops then. we'll have to contend with dense fog as we make our way later on into the week but you can see dry and warmer weather for the rest of your i guess start of -- end of november, beginning of december. too early in the morning on thanksgiving. my brain is on turkey and pumpkin pie, guys. i'll just be honest about it. >> we'll just go with thanksgiving day holiday weekend. >> yeah. holiday weekend. that works. shopping week. let's call it that. back to you guys. >> it's not even 5:00. don't feel bad. >> it really is early. most people are just basting the bird saying what did she say? fighting. at least forty it appears a truce in cairo, egypt is holding after five days of street fighting. at least 40 people died in the violence this week. egypt's military today apologized for the loss of life and promised to bring those responsible to justice and a promised election scheduled for next week will go on as scheduled. protestors vow to keach -- keep up the pressure until military rule is transferred to the citizens. >> they have no right to claim any authority to make any decisions in this country ever again. >> u.s. officials are trying to win the release of three

american college students accused of throwing firebombs at security forces. one of the three called home and said they are in good condition. it looks like on this holiday investors have very little to be thankful for. stocks in the u.s. and europe have tumbled this month as concerns about debt and deficit problems are on both sides of the atlantic. the markets are closed. the stock market will shut down three hours early tomorrow after being open. and in the last session the dow sank 236 points while the nasdaq fell 61. the average rate on the 30- year fixed mortgage is hovering above its record low for a fourth week but those low mortgage rates have done little to boost home sales or refinancing. freddie mac says the rate on the 30-year fixed loan fell to 3.98% from 4% the previous week. black friday is tomorrow. the busiest shopping day of the season, this holiday you may notice one of the many new ways to pay for your purchases using your smart phone and eliminating the need to whip

out your wallet. cnet's kara tsuboi has more. >> reporter: at some stores across america, you no longer need to do this but, rather, this. introducing google wallet. >> google wallet allows us to make the checkout process more convenient and efficient for our customers. they just use it at the stores. >> reporter: gap, banana republic and old navy is the latest one to audition google wallet as well as macy's, subway and walgreens and the new high-tech way to pay. >> we are always looking for ways to improve our customer experience. this just being one of them. >> reporter: google wallet relies on what's called near field communication to connect a smart phone with the reader. it's similar to how bluetooth and wi-fi work over the air. right now google wallet and its app is only compatible with the sprint nexus s 4-g. but the technology also works with google prepaid cards and a handful of other credit cards. while google is the first big name to enter the market it's starting to face company

testing from companies like square, even tech giant apple. >> more and more phones will have this technology and with google behind it, it could get big. it's not going to replace paying with a credit card. it's just one more option for paying. >> reporter: none of the customers at a san francisco banana republic had tried it but all embraced the idea of google wallet. >> i find it very practical and i would totally trust it. >> it's very convenient, of course. >> that would be easy and fantastic. >> reporter: experts say this kind of system could revolutionize the way we shop. in san francisco, kara tsuboi for cbs news. >> currently google wallet is only available at 65 bay area stores but there are plans to roll out the technology to other markets very soon. how fresh is your turkey? >> i'm not cooking it. >> i was just busy. >> well, we got a problem here. why you may want to give that bird a closer look while

welcome back. 4:50 now. a little rainy and wet out there. >> yeah. and i think kristy is right. this is the perfect holiday weather because if it's bright and sunny you want to be outside but now you want to hang out with mom and dad, cook turkey. >> snuggle up on the couch and take a nap. >> another good option. >> if somebody else is cook the turkey you can take a nap, throwing a log on the fire enjoying this nice thanksgiving weather. a little cool outside this morning and you might need that umbrella starting to see scattered showers throughout the bay area and even some more moderate rainfall if we look up to the north toward sacramento. we'll continue to see showers

this afternoon, at least a chance of wet weather, although this morning keep that umbrella handy. seeing those cloudy conditions of course. temperatures sitting in the mid- 50s for the most part. by this afternoon, warming up to temperatures a few degrees from where they are now and chance of showers this afternoon but a little sunshine too. the reason we are seeing showers now, these two areas of low pressure one to the north and one to the south that are passing through, that's going to bring us that wet weather at least for the next couple of hours so hold on to the umbrella. you may depending what neighborhood you're in need it at least even into the evening. we may see scattered showers then, as well. if you are heading out today for your holiday, you're going to see some of those showers as you take off in san francisco. but the weather at these destinations is actually looking good at houston topping out at 76. seeing a little bit of cloud cover there. 65 is a high in denver. chicago topping out at 56. new york sunny temperature there 54 so great weather for the thanksgiving day parade. throughout the rest of northern california, though, a little

bit different story, seeing showers across the board and actually at lake tahoe we're seeing snow level at 6,000 feet today. temperatures there only maxing out at 44 degrees. right here in the bay area, our highs making it to the high 50s and low 60s, as well. 59 high in fremont. livermore topping out at 60 and fairfield making it to 58 degrees today. now, we will dry out on black friday and the weekend. we'll continue to see dry conditions at least for the middle of the next week although we'll have dense fog. that's a look at your forecast. back to you guys. >> thank you. we have our stretchy pants on today, don't we? >> all about the elastic today. >> getting comfortable because overeating and thanksgiving, well, they go hand in hand of course. and now it's just a question of whether you take a little control today or slip right into that seasonal binge. >> we have been joking about overeating but research shows that a big meal does a lot more than make you sleepy.

it may hurt your heart. dr. kim mulvihill has the simple solution for you. >> reporter: like millions of americans, nicole drake is getting ready for the biggest meal of the year. >> i want to make my cornbread today for my cornbread and bacon stuffing so that's ahead of time. >> reporter: how big is this between the turkey, the trimmings and a piece or two of pie a typical thanksgiving meal can pack a whopping 3,000 calories with 230 grams of fat. even in healthy people, all that fat can spell trouble. after thanksgiving dinner, hospital emergency rooms swell with overstuffed and overserved guests. research shows how fatty meals can actually impair how well your blood vessels work and that can hurt you now or later. so before you sit down to dine with your family and friends, think about how you're going to survive this dinner. not only do you want to take a walk after your feast. plan ahead and go for at least a 30-minute walk first thing in

the morning way before you sink your teeth into that pie. take a 30-minute walk what would you say to that? >> i don't have time. >> reporter: well, it may be time to make time. studies show walking for 30 minutes, 12 or more hours before a fatty meal, can prevent one of the most damaging effects, a post-feast spike in triglycerides. dr. kim mulvihill, cbs 5, healthwatch: dr. kim also says do not fast up until the big feast. you're not doing yourself any favors. just try to sample everything with small portions. >> i better have breakfast. that's what i'm doing right now. avoid seconds and practice saying to your mom or your grandma and even aunt tilly it's delicious but i'm full. >> that's hard. >> just sit there like a whale going oh, man it tasted so good going down, though, you know? >> don't want to have those regrets. you know, it could have been a turkey disaster. this is for a nashville woman who didn't check the expiration

date on her bird. she didn't think about the date on the butterball turkey at the store and said she was stunned when she saw the date after she took it out of the fridge on tuesday. >> i was shocked! because it says, uhm, november the 23rd of 2007. i went oh, my gosh, i can't eat this turkey. >> 2007!! >> that's an old bird. >> it is. she returned the expired bird to the store. she got a complete refund and she bought another turkey at a different store. she checked the expiration date this time. the store manager did apologize for the bird that went bad saying it should never have been out on the shelf or in the refrigerator section. >> but if it was frozen how long can you freeze those birds. >> we're talking to the bitter ball people in 20 minutes so we'll ask the butterball people the question then. how about taking in a movie this weekends? paul chambers with three great flicks that are all debuting
