the mountains east of phoenix after taking off at an airport in mesa. >> reporter: a web cam train recorded the impact. >> i look ed up and saw this fireball and it rose up. and then all of a sudden, kapoof, boom. that's when it spread whatever, fuel and everything all over the place. >> reporter: witnesses say they heard a plane revving its engines in an attempt to clear the 5,000-foot mountain peak. jet fuels were found burning on the mountain terrain. >> the way the mountain was, the way the impact, debris was strewn and the fire was burning, it didn't look like anybody could survive something like that. >> reporter: the twin engine left arizona to pick up three children, said to be ages 5 to 9 for the holiday weekend at mesa's falcon field. it took off, only to crash in the mountain side about 30 miles east of phoenix, moments later. it's reported that the fuselage

broke into larger pieces in an area that particularly is hard for investigators and recovery teams to reach. tara merginer for cbs news. american airlines jet made an emergency landing in los angeles last night. minutes after 767 took off from los angeles head ed to new york the crew smelled something burning. nine minutes after take-off, the plane returned safely to the airport. for the latest on the penn state sex abuse scandal investigation, a lawyer for jerry sandusky is denying new claims of sexual abuse, one claim allegedly involves a grandchild. >> reporter: a source tells cbs new news that penn state former assistant football coach jerry sandusky is facing two new claims of child sexual abuse and at least one of the children allegedly victimized is a member of sandusky's own family. earlier this month, he was

arrested and charged with molesting eight kids over a 15-year period, allegedly meeting some of the boys through his charity for at-risk youth, the second mile. s sandusky's attorney told cbs he believes these new allegations have been made by a family member involved in a divorce and custody proceeding and that they are, quote, totally unfounded. he said that sandusky adamantly denies the allegation. meanwhile, the attorney for one of the original alleged sex abuse victims filed a motion in court to prevent second mile from transferring its assets. the charity has said it may shut down. sandusky's attorney says if new charges are filed in relation to these latest allegations, he will fight them vigorously. anna

cynthia joins us. good morning and happy thanksgiving. >> happy thanksgiving to you, too, jeff. there's definitely a more business-like feel in the air, a done attitude. good news is that the travel went more smoothly than expected, even with 32.45 million americans hitting the road or the air. and there is no travel proble s problems -- there are no travel problems to report today. the day before thanksgiving traditionally marks a mad dash to return home to feast and family. but for many travelers, crossing the country's roads and skies this year went off without a hitch. >> we are going to to puerto vallarta, getting married at sunset on the beach sunday. >> only do this once in your life, supposed to, right? >> yep. >> reporter: relieved to see the big boards showing few delays.

major airline hubs like heartsville-jackson in atlanta had swift lines and smiling faces. but that's not the case for drivers in portland, maine, where close to a foot of wet, heavy snow fell. motorists struggled to stay on slick roads, but some lost control and ended up in ditches. and drivers were stuck in a mucky mess for 40 miles on a pennsylvania turnpike near pittsburgh after a tanker truck spilled driveway sealant on to the road. >> this is unacceptable. they should have shut the freeway down. it don't come off easy, nothing. i don't even know how i'm going to get where i'm supposed to go. >> reporter: with more than 42 million people expected to travel this holiday weekend, the crowds did cause a bit of crankiness in some. but for many families, like the johnsons -- >> it's been a breeze this morning, yeah. it's been okay. >> reporter: traveling with kids that were grateful to get home with no trouble at all.

>> you like turkey? >> yeah. >> reporter: there were so many families yesterday that told us that they were choosing family over finance and they were making the plunge and taking the trip because family was more important this year. and it's good to know that getting there was easy, because when you're coughing up all your carbon a trip and you have a tough time getting there, it can make it not worth it. yesterday went really smoothly. we wish a happy thanksgiving to everybody today. back to you guys. >> cindy, thank you very much. family is always more important, isn't it? >> without question. >> stock markets are closed for thanksgiving this morning, but the protests continue there to some degree. though, without the usual crowds. >> taryn winter brill is outside the occupy wall street site in lower manhattan. good morning. happy thanksgiving, taryn. >> reporter: as to you. the so-called occupy wall street behind me is all but empty, as they appear to celebrate their own personal feast.

>> the movement is in your heart. >> reporter: on thanksgiving eve while many prepared for the thanksgiving feast, occupy wall street protesters continued. protesting on thanksgiving, does this re-evaluate your message? >> it's about respecting what america is and hoping it can be something better. >> reporter: it may be a community that's hungry for change, but on thanksgiving, they'll have to settle for turkey. organizers have arranged for 5,000 hot holiday dinners to be provided this afternoon, paid for, they say, by private donation. nearly half of those meals will come from texas rotisserie and grill located just up the block. they've been working round the clock the last 48 hours to make enough meals to feed a movement. is this about supporting the movement or is it just a business trend? >> we are feeling the same thing

and i do feel for the 99%. >> reporter: the owner says he's getting paid to cook the meals, but at a discounted rate, turning virtually no profit. instead, it's the major retail chains that are hoping for big profit, with black friday just hours away. but more protests are being organized with websites like stop black friday, calling for boycotts of big chains like target, best buy and walmart. is protesting on a day like black friday really everything this movement represents? if you had to pick one day to do it? >> if you had to pick one day to do it, yes. >> reporter: occupy protester sean mcewen started a website. >> it's called don't occupy walmart. we want people not to go. we're not going to go there and turn people away at the door. we want to inform them and tell them not to show up. >> reporter: incidentally, other protesters may not be as laid back. we're hearing some reports that

some will try to physically stop shoppers from getting into the store. once you get inside, you may not be out of the woods. we're hearing reports of other in-line protests, where they'll stand to the line, get to the purchase area and not buy the item they're holding, simply to bulk up the process and hold up the line. >> physically stopping shoppers, that's great. >> reporter: that's what we hear. >> taryn, thank you very much. appreciate it. >> thank you, taryn. an update now on the protests in egypt where three american students that were locked up monday night are now going free. >> they were accused of throwing firebombs but the local prosecutor has decided not to press charges. elizabeth palmeri is in cairo. >> reporter: the egyptian prosecutor is not going to press charges against them, although there was no reason for this recent decision.

they were arrested for allegedly protesting in the tarir square protest. after their release, the three were examined by a doctor and a member of their families say they're going to be taken back to their dorm rooms at the american university in cairo, where they were all studying arabic. meanwhile on day six of the unrest here, there's a break in the violence. overnight, the army put up barbed wire at the entrance to the side street, which had been the epicenter of the battle. and the protesters, at least for now, are cooperating. even talking to the soldiers sent to enforce the troops. >> it was terrible. in front of the tv, you see people dying and trying to get back to life. it's very bad. >> reporter: it follows a night of police volleying tear gas at demonstrators, who surged up and down from the front lines in chaotic waves. all week, protesters have claimed the security forces were

using live ammunition against them. one man showed us a bullet. what kind of gun did it come from? >> the army over there. >> reporter: that he believes is from a police weapon. there is no proof of that. but doctors treating the wounded say off the record that some of the more than 30 people who died were shot. the army denies their troops have fired on protesters and this morning egypt's military is reinforcing efforts to quell the violence. it's sounding concillatory and says it's sorry for the p protesters' deaths and will launch a speedy investigation. the problem remains the same, though, of course, erica. that is, very few people here believe them. back to you. >> all right. liz palmer in cairo this morning. liz, thanks. before we got the news of the students' release, i got a chance to speak to derek sweeney's mom. i asked her what he had to say. >> i was just elated to be able to speak to him and hear his

voice. he -- of course, i asked him if he did anything and he said no, they did not. none of him -- actually, i did find out that he is roommates with one of the boys and the other one is a friend of his from school. all three boys do know each other. and he said that he did not do anything and neither did his friends. >> what do you mean by that, meaning that there have been allegations of them throwing things off a rooftop. >> right. >> he said we didn't throw anything? >> no. he said they weren't even on a rooftop. >> where were they when they get picked up? how did it happen? >> they were standing on stairs. i didn't get to -- they cut us off. i asked him if he did anything. and i said you didn't -- actually, i didn't make it leading. i said you didn't do anything, did you? he said, no, of course not. i would never do that. i said i knew that. i knew you would never do anything like that. i keep telling everybody he would never do anything like

that. he said, mom, you know me. i would never do something like that. i would never hurt somebody. so they were waiting for the translator. each boy only had a few brief minutes to talk to me. he said that they had spent last night in one prison, one jail. and then they transferred him to a different jail, but all three boys are in the same jail cell together. so, they're being -- at least they have each other. >> they have each other. did he talk at all about how they're being treated, what people are saying to them? >> he said they fed us a little. >> how much has he been told and was he able to relay it to you about why the three of them are there, why they were picked up, why they were being questioned. >> i don't know anything. we didn't have that conversation. like i said, they are waiting. they are at the attorney general. they've been transferred to the attorney general, the egyptian attorney general's office. they are there. >> he has been there for a couple of months now. >> yes. >> how much time has he spent going down to the square? how much has he talked to you

about what's happening on the ground with all the changes in egypt and what it's been like. did he ever fear for his safety? >> to be perfectly honest, no, i didn't ever fear for his safety because he's usually pretty responsible. he makes good choices. >> defer tell you that he feared for his own safety? >> no, no. i mean, i told him that when i saw the picture of them being arrested he looked terrified and he said, i was, mom. i was. >> do you feel you're getting the answers and the help that you need? >> right now, after just talking to him -- i got a call with all fives across my cell phone and it's the consolate general of the u.s. embassy in cairo, egypt. he said, here, i have your son. do you want to talk to him? of course i do! >> he can't be here for thanksgiving, but hopefully for the rest of the holiday season. >> we weren't planning on him

lucky stores suggest c happy thanksgiving? >> it's 7:25. let's get you caught up on some holiday headlines here in the bay area. lucky stores suggest customers of 19 bay area stores check their bank statements closely. credit and debit card scanners at those stores were tampered with. scanners in self-checkout lines have all been fixed. lucky has no reports of any money being stolen due to the tampering. the stores go from pinole to san jose and up the peninsula, as well. 500 volunteers are serving mealses to needy at glide memorial church this morning. breakfast right now and at 9:00 turkey dinners. glide expects to feed more than 5,000 people, just one of the bay area organizations providing free thanksgiving meals for the needy on this holiday.

in san jose a record turnout for the 7th annual silicon valley turkey trot. the event already under way at guadalupe river park. more than 20,000 people expected for the charity event. organizers hope it raise a half million dollars for local charities today. and a good way to get in shape for all that turkey you are going to eat. we'll have your traffic and weather coming right up. ,, ,,,,,,,,,,

contending with some cloud cover and some showers this thanksgiving morning, but it's not going to be a washout although enough rain to probably keep that umbrella handy throughout the morning and actually into the afternoon. taking a live look outside you can see some of the raindrops on the lensof our camera, gray an cloudy. hi-def doppler showing showers have moved to the south and east, seeing some light showers through parts of the bay and down into san jose and in our far inland spots, as well. into the week we are going to dry out and warm up in time for the black friday shopping and in time for your kicking off the holiday season on saturday and sunday. temperatures warming up into the high 60s in our inland spots and the start of next workweek looking pretty good, too. a mix of sun and clouds, dense fog so be careful on the roads. ,,,,,,,,

>> next question is from charlotte in l.a. >> i have to work on black friday and i'm wondering if i can't get out, am i really going to be missing all the deals? >> back to going on the computer. no, you're going to be okay. basically when you look at the black friday deals, about 90% of what gets offered in the stores also is offered on-line. as far as deals. and a lot of the big deals that you see in stores, the door buster items, each store carries about ten to 15. so unless you are the first couple of people in line you end up not really getting the deals. think about it that way. think with going on-line like we said because about 90% of what you find in the store is on the computer. >> the next question comes to us from face book on-line. is it the best time to buy electronics or when would be a better time? meaning this shopping season is the best time. i've off then wondered about that. >> i have as well. consumer reports has done studies on it. they have found as far as tvs,

camcorders and other dvd players, things like that, they go on sale more by about 5% less than everything else in the days after black friday. so if you hold out, you will get probably a better deal, about 25% of items out there, you will get a better deal on them after black friday. another thing to consider here is the fact that the items that are on sale on black friday in many cases, are not necessarily the brand that you are going to want to go with. so if you hold out for that brand, can you actually find a better deal on the brand that you want if you hold out. >> no matter what you buy electronics wise, it'll be outdated in six months. >> exactly. >> but sometimes it is so easy to go out and you think you want a tv and you think i have to buy the one now on black friday because it is such a good deal, even if it isn't the one i want. you can end up getting sucked into the deals easily when it is not something you or the person you are buying for wants or needs. >> that's a good point.

>> thank you very much. >> we have done scrap booking with you but this is a new take on ways to preserve memories and do special things for special people in your life. >> it is. it is something i always believed in, which is creating meaningful gifts. and i think that is because of my love with scrap booking. i did it with creative memories, which is the "it" company for creating memories. this is when everybody heads to the mall. can you spend hours upon hours upon hours trying to sear much for the gift and find the fancy expensive gift. when really, the gifts you remember are the ones that came from the heart. as i always say, i've gotten given by my husband. i was given a foet why album of everything we did our first year together with notes from him. and that has always remained my favorite gift ever. he has given me diamond earring and diamond necklace too. but the photo album is the most wonderful gift he could have ever given.

it's called a thankful tree. you have these little slits of paper. it is so simple. you ask everybody to write what they are thankful about. and you put it on the tree. it brings back thanksgiving to what thanksgiving is all about. >> we can do this -- you can get the materials after but you can start today with the scraps of paper. >> just put it together. >> and it is so easy. this took me about five minutes to put together. and you have everybody else do the work by writing it on there. >> i like the everybody else does the work part. >> i know. >> this last one that you brought. >> this is one of my favorites. >> means so much for so many reasons. these are recipes that were your moms that she wrote down. >> yeah. this is one of the gift ideas in the book. this is part of the collection with creative memories. it is our recipe album. i wanted to do it because this is a tradition i do with my family. we all bring in, because i can't cook so well. so i have everybody bring in their favorite dish to make at our house. and it dawned on me one

thanksgiving that you know, i want these -- these remind me, of each of the people in my family. i want the recipe for years to come. i had them write it down in their own handwriting, which is a lot that people don't remember. can you type it up, but with handwriting, i had my mom do, betty's biscuits. i had her do it years and years ago. i'm thankful because my mom was my best friend in the world but he is now passed away. and every christmas when we make her biscuits, we think of her. i have my grandma's recipes and all this stuff. >> nancy o'dell, nice to have you. the book of course, secret ingredient. but nancy is not leaving yet. she is going to stick around to share some of her favorite ,,,,ú

>> it says so much, that one scene. even in the beginning there is not a lot of words but it does say so much. the other scene i love from that movie, right at the same time where they are have meal, is sandra bullock, her character has gone out to get the thanksgiving meal. she bought it and brought it in. everyone gathered around the tv to watch the game and michael, the character, has gone over to eat the the table by himself. that's what brings the whole family to eat with him. that's when you realize that thanksgiving is not about feeding the belly but more about feeding the soul. >> it is so much about feeding the soul. >> another great clip, i have to say, this is one of my favorites because it speaks to it. they always have great thanksgiving scenes on friends but this may be one of the best. >> let's take a look at this one. >> dude. as i apparently you were a little mean to him in high school. >> a little mean? you made my life miserable. >> i'm sorry. i had no idea. i'm sorry. >> well, you should be. screw it, bring on the yams.

>> but you worked so hard. >> yams. >> okay. >> they are just priceless. >> most shows you go back to and they make you laugh no matter what. like seinfeld. >> this is one of the most hilarious of all times. and brad pitt saying, wb because his character got the complex because he was overweight growing up and was teased about it. so he says two of the most evil things ever, complex carbohydrates and rachel green. jennifer anston's character. but one of the sweet things with thanksgiving is the fact that he was, they were married at the time, then he was willing to come and do a cameo on her sitcom. i think is what made it extra special. >> it was sweet. and it reminds us of the things that come out at thanksgiving. sometimes with the help of the drinks at thanksgiving, sometimes not. >> "planes, trains and automobiles." when you think of thanksgiving you dr. v to think of this one.

>> oh, yeah. john candy and steve martin. >> classic scenes. classic movie. >> the modern day laurel and hardy. they soar great. they are so opposite. and they wined up together. this is a movie that makes you like have tears the entire time you are watching it. not only because you are watching so hard but because of the touching ending where steve marten realizes even though he hates john candy's character almost through the whole movie, he doesn't have family to go home to. and despite he has all these struggles, he invites him to his house at thanksgiving. >> well, to actually hate be in somebody, you have to love them. >> true. >> cheers. i keep going back to it. here is a great scene from a "cheers" thanksgiving. >> this better be good news, norm. >> i'm sorry, guys. the little pop thing won't pop out. something wrong with it. >> something wrong with you. >> no, the little pop thing.

happy thanksgiving, bay area. waking up to wet weather this morning. scattered showers through most parts of the bay although a little bit of sunshine peeking through, as well. and that we'll see more of later on this afternoon. at the golden gate bridge, seeing raindrops on our cameras so seeing a little bit of rain there right now. and on the hi-def doppler, we are seeing some showers through parts of san jose that system moving south and east but we will keep that chance of showers in the forecast even through tonight. drying out though and warming up as we make our way into saturday. saturday and sunday temperatures inland will be up into the high 60s at that point. and then for the first half of next workweek, pleasant temperatures as well, high 60s inland. we'll deal with some fog though so be careful on the roads.
