there. in the 70s, quite a different picture from a few days ago. although it is chilly outside right now. we are contending with areas of dense, patchy fog. in fact, that's making visibility under a quarter of mile in some places in the north bay. i'll tell you how long we can enjoy the sunny weather, a little later on in the show. we are seconds away from the next big mission to the red planet. nasa is about to launch the world's largest extraterrestrial explorer and it will happen in less than a minute. we'll bring it to you live. you're looking at live pictures from cape canaveral, florida. the rover is called curiosity, a mobile laboratory the size of a car. it has instruments that can sample martian soil and rocks and analyze them right there on the surface of mars. if all goes according to plan, curiosity will land on mars next august. again, we are only a few seconds

[ laughter ] >> there we go. >> there it goes. yeah, this is an historic mission you're watching before your eyes right now. live pictures from cape canaveral, florida, headed to mars. it's going take it several months to get there, not going to get there until next august. it has six wheels, a single arm, and among its tools, a drill and a laser. it will zap rocks and try to figure out if there has been life on mars and if it is possible for life to exist on mars. you can see it blasting through the atmosphere of florida right there in front of our eyes, live. curiosity, by the way, is powered by a small nuclear reactor. it costs a lot of money, $2.5

billion is the price tag of this mission under way right now. amazing. live pictures right now from florida. back on earth, the holiday shopping madness continues this weekend, and that is after a busy night last night in union square, when shoppers and occupy protesters converged for black friday, protesters speaking out against big corporations moved from intersection to intersection, blocking them. police barricades closed down streets and rerouted traffic, but the impact on foot traffic was negligible. most people were able to get to their destinations without any problem. the protesters did not seem to succeed in discouraging holiday shopping. >> it's a loss when you have people out occupying and people are going to shop. their message is blocked. >> i'm not sure what they are protesting. if they are protesting something

important, i would like to know. i'm still unclear on what the message is. >> boy, google it. there are concerns about another element, a critical mass bike ride. but the crowd headed off in another direction. today, several bay area cities are asking shoppers to think smaller. shop owners all over the bay are taking part in what's known as small business saturday, a nationwide initiative into getting shoppers to shop at independently-owned stores instead of those big-box retailers. small businesses in oakland did decide to get that buy local movement started a little early. a citizen-led event tried to lure back customers to stores damaged by occupy oakland protests three weeks ago. brick and mortar vendors, as well as pop-up stores, food stands, and musical performances combined yesterday to create what was known as blackout oakland. some merchants were already beginning to see the benefits. >> it is a fantastic day, and i have to attribute that to the

great people of oakland coming by and checking it out. >> we knew it was going to be a nice day. >> despite in acts of vandalism, store owners say they still support the occupy movement and occupy oakland returned the favor by publicly supporting yesterday's big event. turns out basketball fans may deck the halls with nba tickets soon. early this morning, nba players and owners reached a tentative agreement to end that lockout. the deal lays out a 66-game schedule set that would begin on christmas day. league commissioner david stern says he is optimistic that deal will be approved. >> our fans and the support from the people and the patience through a large part of this process, you know, that's who a lot of this credit goes to. >> the proposed deal includes a $300 million player salary cut and a 50/50 split of revenues between players and owners.

both sides met a simple majority to ratify the agreement. three americans detained by egyptian officials are expected to return home sometime this weekend. meanwhile, the number of protesters in cairo's tahrir square is slowly growing. danielle nottingham reports. >> reporter: the three american students arrested in egypt are on their way home. >> i look forward to seeing them and i certainly know his family looks forward to giving him one gigantic hug. >> reporter: the mother of derek sweeney says they were finally set free late friday, once authorities finished processing them. >> all these prayers that have been coming our way have been answered, have truly been answered! we couldn't feel more blessed! >> reporter: the students were arrested earlier in the week amid the growing chaos on the streets of cairo. more than 100,000 protesters flooded tahrir square friday, renewing their call for the ruling military council to step

down. an ambulance fought its way through the massive crowd, as tensions rise ahead of monday's parliamentary election. demonstrators are rejecting the egyptian military's decision to appoint a new prime minister who was a member of haasy mubarak's regime. u.s. officials call for a quick transition to democracy in egypt. the obama administration once again pledged to support the civilian protesters. so far, the week-long uprisings have left at least 40 people dead and thousands injured. friday's demonstration is the biggest since the current showdown began with egypt's army. the ruling generals who still refuse to leave power promised voting for a new parliament will start on time monday, despite the unrest. danielle nottingham, cbs news, washington. san francisco police are looking for a man they say rammed a person with his car on

purpose. police have released these pictures of the suspect. they were taken by witnesses at the time of a fight at a restaurant on thursday. police say shortly after that fight, the suspect drove his mazda suv into the victim at a gas station in the inner richmond district, leaving that person with critical injuries. a major construction project over the next two years could send richmond commuters on a 10-mile cross-bay detour. that will not make drivers happy. cal trans is planning to replace eastbound onramps for interstate 580 at scoastled avenue and western drive. as a detour, the agency is suggesting drivers take the richmond san rafael bridge to marijn before turning around. richmond city leaders are upset over cal trans' lack of consultation prior to the project. around here, we are looking at a lovely weekend if you're shopping or maybe just--

paying rent for years. she's had numerous court judgments against her and owes hundreds of thousands of dollars to landlords here in the bay area. allen martin takes a closer look at where she's turned up and why her time in oregon didn't last long. >> reporter: gwen smith, we want to talk to you! >> reporter: when we first caught up with gwen smith, it was late october in the town of forestville in sonoma county. she sped past our cameras as we tried to ask her about eight court judgments against her, judgments in favor of landlords, like connie cook. >> she started claiming that the apartment was unhabitable. the water was not healthy. there was a gas leak. >> reporter: the judge ruled smith's conduct of not paying rent and filing numerous legal actions, malicious and a tactical delay and awarded cook $49,000 in damages.

after leaving cook's house, smith moved to oregon, renting a room in this house. >> she had a bed up there. >> reporter: landlord lance hill says within days, he realized he had made a big mistake. >> i got, you know, the roommate from hell. >> reporter: she put a lock on her room and started complaining about everything. >> it's all about her. i mean, your life is -- she's like a full-time job. >> reporter: then smith moved into pamela joy's house and soon started threatening her, according to court documents. >> i put a lock on the inside of my bedroom door because i was afraid to not lock it at night when i was asleep. >> reporter: joy also took smith to court. she says this is an audio recording of smith talking back to the judge. >> the witness may step down. >> wait, i'm not done! >> i'm sorry. you are done. >> no, i'm not done! >> she was arguing with the judge! it was to my mind, really shocking. >> reporter: but one thing that didn't happen to landlords in oregon, it was the financial ruin of southern california

involving smith withholding rent. if oregon, if there's a landlord-tenant dispute, tenants still have to pay rent into an escrow account held by the court. whoever wins gets the money. janet forthman with a rights expert. >> the court says we're going to hold on to this rent. and by the way, mr. tenant, you have to keep paying every month to the court. >> reporter: portman thinks it's a good way to stop abuse on both sides. >> there's a neutral ref he re, namely the court. >> reporter: the landlord evicted smith from his home within three months. smith kept on living in con know cook's converted barn for 16 months without paying rent, while she fought her eviction in court. that eventually caused cook to lose her home to foreclosure. coincidence or not? smith, it appears, is now back in the more tenant oz friendly bay area. most recently, we found her at a

to the malls today to do a little more shopping. looks like whatever you decide to do, it's going to be great. >> it's going to be great. head to an outdoor shopping center, because it's going to be dry and a lot warmer than we usually are for this time of year. numbers today compared to yesterday and where we usually are, 4 to 10 degrees above those numbers. gorgeous day overall, breaking into the 70s in some locations. this morning, if you're out commuting, definitely want to be careful, dealing with a little patchy fog, especially in those inland locations. that means limited visibility, but you wouldn't know it, looking at shots over my shoulders. we're seeing a nice amount of blue skies out there, a little low cloud cover. here's a shot outside transamerica building in san francisco, beautiful picture here. we'll see these kind of conditions throughout the rest of the day. if you take a look at the golden gate bridge, not seeing any fog directly there, but we are farther in the inland valleys, east bay seeing the low visibility. be careful if you're driving early this saturday morning. out the door conditions on the cooler side, seeing numbers some in the 30s. for the most part, in the 40s. this afternoon, we'll start to

see some of those clouds mix out. we'll continue to see some of that patchy fog at the coastline and a few clouds lingering at the bay and in inland spots. overall, a really nice day. numbers in the 60s and 70s. you can see a lot of that cloud cover sitting off the coastline, pushing through the pacific. not dealing with too cloudy of conditions this morning as you're stepping outside. future cast showing dense fog in the inland valleys pushing through livermore and pleasantton. clearing out by late afternoon today. pretty beautiful day. get outside and enjoy it, because we potentially have wet weather in store later on in the week. right now, you can see the jet stream well above us. no wet weather in our forecast. this area of high pressure holding strong. that means a dry pattern that we'll see today, tomorrow, and over the next couple of days. throughout northern california, nice day for everybody. lake tahoe at 58. yosemite at 68. fresno at 61. dealing with fog in sacramento, and 57 today as a high in eureka. a little cloud cover to our north. in the bay area, highs will look

like this. 70 for santa clara. heyward at 65. far inland locations seeing low 60s and mid-60s in pleasantton and livermore. low 60s in napa. more 60s for san rafael, sonoma, san leandro, davis city at 62. sunday conditions looking pretty good, even a few degrees warmer than what we saw yesterday. beautiful weather for the start of your work week as well, seeing mostly sunny skies there. then we're going to see numbers drop down a little bit as we make our way into tuesday and wednesday. then thursday, that's when we really have some potential changes in store. low pressure is going to be building in. we're keeping a very slight chance of showers in the forecast for thursday. you'll see i didn't indicate it on the seven-day, because we're looking at minimal rainfall totals. want to give you a heads up, all the more reason to enjoy the sun today. might be wet weather ahead. >> coming eventually. >> exactly. >> thanks, kristy. pencil and paper have been the staples of the classroom for

shoppers. the new mission to mars, the rover that may find signs of life on the red planet. welcome back. it is 7:30 on november 26. thanks for joining us. i'm anne mackovic. >> i'm kristy siefken. this is a perfect day to do something other than shopping. if you're hitting the malls do, do it outdoors. we'll see lots of sunshine today. some areas with dense patchy fog. we're seeing plenty of blue this morning. this will be an indicator of what we'll see later on this afternoon, but we're not going to stay dry for long. there's a chance of showers back in our forecast. i'll tell you exactly when that's going to be a little later on in the show. >> thanks, kristy. about half an hour ago, a robotic explorer blasted off for the planet mars. the rover called curiosity will travel 350 million miles before arriving at mars next august. there it goes! the biggest rover ever, weighing about a ton, with measurements

similar to a midsize car. it will sample soils and rocks, analyze them right there on the surface of mars and look for evidence of living microbes. shoppers behaving badly at stores across the country this year, including here in the bay area. police have arrested an oakland man for shooting a wal-mart shopper in the parking lot. they say 20-year-old tony phillips is one of three suspects who tried to rob a group of shoppers outside of the store in san leandro yesterday. the shoppers fought back and that is when someone shot the victim, a man. phillips was caught by that man's family. the other got away, and the man who was shot is in critical condition this weekend. [ crowd cheering ] yikes! people screaming for help in the southern california wal-mart store, after a woman maced other shoppers. witnesses say she did it to keep others from getting the video game console that she was after.

about 20 people were hit by the pepper spray and that woman managed to run away from the store and has not been caught. occupy protesters will hit the streets in san francisco again today. they are marching for immigrant rights. yesterday, holiday shoppers, occupy protesters and critical mass all converged in the same place at the same time. don knapp on the elements for that perfect storm. >> reporter: union square was already near gridlock with black friday shoppers when a relatively small group of occupy protesters brought things to a halt. n]♪ >> reporter: moving from intersection to intersection and blocking them. police barricades closed down streets, rerouting traffic. but the impact on foot traffic was nil. shoppers moved along the street with occupiers, many enjoying the protesters, watching street entertainment. some shoppers even paused to have their pictures taken with a protester. if the protesters' message was

to avoid retailing single-most important shopping day, they weren't having much success. >> i think the cause gets lost when you have people out occupying, especially people going to shop. their message is lost. >> reporter: meanwhile, a perfect storm was in the making, a possible collision of black friday crowds, occupy protesters, and critical mass, all building up at about the same time. but the monthly rogue bicycling crowd headed off in another direction. few downtown were paying much attention to the occupy protesters. the overflow crowd gathered to watch the annual christmas tree lighting. >> 3, 2, 1! [ cheers & applause ] >> reporter: the message of 99% was not falling entirely on deaf ears. >> even though it is inconvenient, i think it's fine people are talking about it. >> reporter: occupiers were in friendly territory, for sure. >> i'm a little mixed. i'm still not sure what they are protesting. if they are protesting something important, i would like to know what it is.

i'm still unclear on what the message is. >> reporter: don knapp, cbs 5. well, one holiday tradition is facing an uncertain future this season. the department of agriculture statistics show the number of christmas tree farms is down 44% nationwide. fake trees at many retailers have severely hurt tree farms. some farmers have suggested pooling money to create a national advertising campaign. one grower has a pitch. >> fake tree is a fake tree. would you take fake flowers to your wife on valentine's day? you don't do that. >> no, you absolutely do not, men out there. the marketing strategy would be similar to the got milk or california cheese campaign. a proposed 15-cent per tree contribution to an advertising fund has been stalled, though, because of political wrangling. more bay area headlines, an 8-year-old boy was found dead in a home in concord. he was found yesterday by his

foster mother. one neighbor says the couple who lives in the house is known for taking in special needs children. an autopsy will be done next week. it may take days to clean up the mess and weeks to figure out what caused this massive water main break in south san francisco. the 60-foot tower of water unleashed yesterday morning. the break sent the torrids of water and mud flowing down local streets, flooding dozens of homes. i was there yesterday. it was a real mess. the latest nba lockout talks produced a handshake and possible tipoff on christmas. early this morning, nba players and owners reached a tentative agreement to end that lockout. the proposal lays down a 66-game schedule set to begin on christmas day. the deal includes a $300 million player salary cut and a 50/50 split of revenues between players and owners. both sides need a simple majority to ratify that agreement. only bummer, my brother works for the minnesota timberwolves,

children have a warehouse full of resources at their disposal. as kate kelly reports, it is thanks to this week's jefferson award winner. >> hi, aiden! how are you doing? >> reporter: like many mothers, bonnie denoyer is taking her 7-year-old son aiden to the library, but it isn't for books. they have come to borrow specialized pediatric equipment, expensive equipment that families with special needs children use daily. >> we're looking for a walker for him. >> okay. >> reporter: they have come to the right place. two years ago, san carlos native kelly sites cofounded able's closet. in donated warehouse space, kelly stores over 200 pieces of equipment that families can try out, borrow, and return without ever spending a dollar. >> most families would be pretty shocked at how expensive the equipment is. even families who are covered by insurance or have med-cal, it won't cover everything. >> reporter: kelly knows because

her 7-year-old daughter kylie has cerebral palsy. wheelchairs can run $5000 to $10,000 a superstroller, $2000. the process is difficult and can take months, and there is no guarantee the child will even like or use it. >> i thought if there was an inventory of all this equipment that parents can try before they make a purchase decision or before the state purchases something for them, just seems logical that that should be available. >> some of the more popular items tend to be bath equipment. the strollers are probably the biggest because insurance won't cover both a wheelchair and stroller. >> reporter: so while working full-time in corporate marketing, this single mom started taking donations in her garage and built the able closet website, listing inventory. >> somebody can click to borrow the equipment. >> the children need to be measured, need to make sure it fits them appropriately, which is why the inventory needs to be so large. >> reporter: twice a month, able

certainly warmer than what we saw yesterday. if you're on the roadways this morning bright and early, be careful, because there are areas of dense, patchy fog. that's going to limit visibility, particularly up in those inland locations and also if you're making your way to some of those inland valleys in the east bay, be wary as well. later this afternoon, it's going to be gorgeous weather, plenty of sunshine in store. as we take a live look outside, you can see some of the sunshine peeking through. not a single cloud in this picture. well, i guess you see a little wispy clouds. certainly not dealing with any rain this morning and temperatures aren't that cold. it's really unseasonable weather for this late in november. another look at our inland locations. this is the picture you see throughout the afternoon today. taking a look at what you can expect for today and a couple days out, patchy fog, once again watch out for mild days ahead. then we will see cooling later on into the week. a look at current temperatures outside right now, in the 40s for the most part, livermore at

44. santa rosa at 43. we're seeing 30s in parts of the north bay right now. a little cooler, and most of the cloud cover you can see is far out in the pacific. some of that working its way into the bay area. mostly what we're dealing with this morning is just that patchy fog. you can see dense areas in our far inland locations, fairfield, concord, livermore. starting to see that break up by 1:00 this afternoon. still seeing areas of fog up in parts of marijn. later on in the afternoon, we start to see a little bit of clearing. we'll continue to see that for the next several days. late night, early morning fog. but we see dry weather at least and warmer weather, because this high pressure is still in the picture, going to hold on strong at least for the next couple of days before we see changes. northern california looking good today. 61 for fresco, cooler in monterrey at 54. looking at the numbers where we are usually compared to where we'll be this afternoon, as much as 8 degrees above average. look at the 70s in mountain

season. this is as cheap as it gets? >> well, the thing is, there's black friday is not necessarily the cheapest. so i say the first two weeks of december is actually also the cheapest. that's what consumer reports found, that basically there's a 5% cheaper after cyber monday and before december 13. >> that goes against conventional wisdom. >> it does, doesn't it? >> yeah. so how do you know where to find the best deals, then? >> for one, using this website to compare prices. there's an iphone app you can bring to the store and scan the bar code. >> you find the tv, you want to buy it, scan it and that will tell you whether you should buy it or wait? >> you can see all the other places, so you can know if you're getting a deal instead of being a sale chaser. >> but will you know where the prices are? >> right. it also shows you the other prices, where they are, and maybe stay home in your pajamas and find the best deal. what other advice for people

thinking about maybe taking a little time off, or on their lunch break or when they are pretending to work, logging onto their favorite stores for cyber monday? what else should they be looking for? >> they should look for the items they want, then set a price alert. >> oh, price alert. >> you can do that at price alert.com, too. you know when the item is at the price you want. you're just waiting for the e-mail at that price, i'm ready to buy. how does the app compile the information? there's so much out there. >> it has historical trends, news, all the information, gathers that up for you and presents it in a way that helps you predict if you should buy or wait. i'm not really good at that. what kind of things would i consider tackling at this point as far as gadgets, beyond the tvs and the things i can handle? what else should we think about buying right now? >> well, it's a great time to stock up on electronics you need

it tells the tale of hugo, a boy who often spends time hopscotching over the city of paris, mending clocks, keeping the tradition of his late father alive. the toy shop owner is brilliant and provides much of the emotional heart of this film. it's a family film, but what martin scorsese has created here is an exquisite jewel box of a movie, brimming with treasures to be enjoyed by the entire family this holiday weekend. next up, not necessarily one for the family, but it's michelle williams who takes on one of the most iconic stars on film, marilyn monroe, and she succeeds on every level. the look, the voice, she nails it. the movie is based on the real-life story of a studio gopher, a boy friday who connects with the movie legend during a film shoot at pine wood studios in london. if his story is to be believed,
