good evening am i'm grace lee. a denver marine killed in afghanistan is being remembered tonight at his alma mater. friends and family are gathering at the soccer field at san ramon valley high school where his family says 19-year- old joshua is at home. the memorial is going to get underway in about an hour from now. don? >> that's right, grace. it does seem appropriate the memorial for joshua corral would be held here at san ramon high school on the day of their big game. afterall, he went to school here and he competed here on the athletic field. 19-year-old lance corporal joshua corral, chachy to his friends was the 2010 graduate. he was killed in afghanistan a little more than a week ago. there have been games on this athletic field all day. san ramon valley's so-called turkey bowl for youth football. after the games, a memorial for

corral will be held here. his old brother wanted it here outdoors under the stars. >> he played sports on the field. the family has chosen after our event to have a tribute with the towns folks coming to pay their respects. >> reporter: earlier this week, the street where corral lived was jammed with friends and neighbors after his family returned from delaware where they received his body. >> he's very young. he wasn't even old enough to go get a beer. >> friends say he was a born leader. his enlisting in january prompted ten friends to do the same. >> he was my best friend, my brother. he was the type of person who would always have your back. even if he asked you not to, he would be there for you. >> he was literally the strongest person you would have ever met. i mean it was impossible to even imagine that something like this could happen. >> during each of the four youth football games of the turkey bowl, there have been memorials and a booth to raise money for the corral family. they sold cookies.

>> awesome. not only have people been buying cookies but they've been donating extra funds for the family. there has been an outpouring like we really didn't even expect it has been awesome. >> reporter: the memorial comes of course on thanksgiving break. a time when many of corral's former classmates here are now in college and coming home for the break. there will be about 1500 people tonight here grace. >> has to be a tough time for the family and that community. don knapp in danville. thank you. the holiday shopping season got off to a strong start on black friday. initial estimates released show sales are up 7% over last year. but the black friday figures with retailers offering huge discounts don't necessarily reflect what the seasonal figures will be. the national retail federation is only expecting a modest 2.8% increase, even with an extra saturday for shopping. >> the official numbers don't come out until tomorrow. anecdotally, it is very good. more people lined up at macy's

in new york than ever before but a cbs poll said four in ten americans say they're going to spend less this year than they did last year. when they get in the store and see the sales, they may act differently. that's not a great sign. >> online sales are growing but only make up about 10% of all sales. retailers still need to get the shoppers into the stores. online shopping has been growing every year, however and this year, cyber monday could be the biggest shopping day of the year. both thanksgiving and black friday, online sales soared up 39% on friday. 24% on friday. that's compared to last year. this year, retailers are offering deep discounts and free shipping and trying to attract online shoppers on cyber monday. phaopg the biggest sellers this year, mobile phones and tablet computers. the lines, the crowds, the craziness of black friday at the big box stores, well, that's over. today is the day for shoppers to show their appreciation for the small, the unique and the

local. ann mackovic went shopping on small business saturday. >> it is a big day for small business. usually you can tell how the year is going to be, you know, next year is going to be, based on christmas. >> don't expect the flashy 50% off signs or other deep discounts you might see at the big box stores here at morning glory boutique. >> we typically don't which i know sounds crazy. >> the shop in downtown burlingame doesn't have to resort to sales. >> most of our clientele are boutique-based so they're not the type to want to go out and get these crazy discounts. >> reporter: and today dubbed small business saturday two years ago is a time for shoppers thinking small to show their support. even president obama pitched in taking his daughters to a bookstore a few blocks from the white house. and there are some distinct advantages. >> to be in a small boutique shop than in a large department

store. sometimes that gets a little overwhelming. >> reporter: but it is not all about competition with big retail chains. in fact, the storeowners that we spoke with say the arrival of this big brand helps foot traffic along the entire corridor. >> just have to get them in the door. >> just have to come inside and try a little bit. that's all. >> come ol eva opened and they're still struggling but hopeful customers will recognize the value. >> we compete because we are different. we bring fresh. people come here and taste it first. >> what's god for one of the shops is usually good for them all leaving hope for the start of a strong holiday shopping season. >> this year has actually been booming. it is much better. >> in burlingame, ann mackovic, cbs 5. falling temperatures will be a major obstacle for the occupiers. since they're antibig retailers, demonstrators are making their own winter wear. it is called a knit-in for the sit-in.

a group of occupiers in berkeley are busy knitting scarves and hats and mittens. they'll send them as part of care packages to occupiers in new york city. knitter sass i this is one way for those who cannot camp out to help out. >> people saying all the way they can be part of resisting the greed of our government and the banks that are consolidating all of -- and mostly finding good ways to be together with other people. >> berkeley occupiers are also taking donations of warm clothes as well. on to the bay area headlines, the berkeley building that was destroyed in a fire last week will be torn down. the five story apartment and retail building on hayes street was red tagged after the five alarm fire tore through it. the owner will begin demolition on monday. nearby buildings and roads will be partially closed until that structure is brought down. cleanup continues today in

south san francisco. this is where an accidental urban geyser sent mud and water flowing into homes, huge mess there. the water main break happened yesterday shooting up plumes 60 feet into the air. more than a dozen homes were flooded. today, the san francisco public utilities commission told us repairs are expected to begin next week. one more hurdle to cross and bars could be rolling into san jose. the valley transportation authority is expected to approve a $700 million contract for the construction. all the project needs now is $900 million from the federal government. that decision is expected early next year. the goal is to extend tracks through downtown to the san jose airport by 2016. exhausted but back in familiar territory, the first of three american students arrested in egypt is home tonight. what his plans are for tomorrow. and paying tribute to their sons and daughters in the military who will not be home for the holiday.

one of the three american students arrested during a protest in cairo is back home in pennsylvania tonight. 19-year-old greg port landed about four hours ago. the other two, lou gates and derrik sweeney are on their way back to the u.s. they caught flights out of egypt earlier today. the three were accused of throwing firebombs at security forces, fighting with protestors in tahrir square. an egyptian court ordered their release on thursday. porter says he is glad to be back in philadelphia. >> what are you going to eat first? >> cheese steak.

military. a tree of san jose's christmas in the park celebration honor those who are serving in the military. south bay, blue star mom is an organization of mothers who have family members serving in the military. many of their children are on active duty around the world and they will not be able to come home for christmas. so, they're being remembered with their photos decorating

the tree. >> this is what they chose to do. being a volunteer, military, it takes something deeper within them to do this. it was a calling. >> the blue star mom sent care packages to the troops to participate in veterans events and help military families in crisis. is it possible to work at a desk and exercise at the same time? a poison control call center in georgia says yes and it has found a way! they installed several so- called treadmill desks. employees do all of the same work as before but they sit less. 30 minutes of walking reduces stress on joints and cuts down the risk of diabetes and can lower cholesterol. exercise can also improve morale. jim, i think we might need to get a couple of these for the news and weather centers. >> we can do that right now as we start walking through the weather pattern. i have a button to push.

as we see, mostly clear skies out there right now. we do have a dense fog advisory up and we're looking for that fog to form right around the bay. mainly in the north and east bay by tomorrow morning. partly cloudy elsewhere. as our dry and mild weekend and my throat, continues here. we expect wind to develop by midweek. which should help to mix out the dense fog that will appear in the early morning hours. otherwise, we'll stay dry through the week here as we don't see any rain in sight at this time. taking a look at the highs for today. fog prone areas, upper 50s prevailing across north and east bay. mid to upper 60s across the south bay. could see 70s. for san jose, likely will hit 70. beach is warm in the mid to upper 60s range. overnight, mid to low 40s. fog-prone areas, possibly upper 30 over in fairfield. pretty cool right now through the delta. as that dense actually fog will

be work -- the tule fog will be working its way into the east bay valley, area of visibility less than a quarter mile here which could create hazardous driving conditions out there. heads up as you're moving around first thing in the morning. other than the valley fog, we'll look for high clouds moving across the area the next couple of days as high pressure prevails. storm trackway to our north. and there it will stay through the week as we look for a dry and mild pattern. slight cooling as the winds develop once again. for now, we'll look for temperatures to warm slightly again tomorrow as we see patchy areas of fog here taking this through tuesday. mainly in the early morning hours giving way to partly cloudy conditions and slightly warmer temperatures until midweek. again, we'll look for the mid to low 60s in the fog-prone areas. warmer as you head to the south bay. back at the beach, should be in the mid to low 60s for tomorrow as most of the fog will be out across the interior as we see

welcome back. what a big day in sports and basketball and football. >> i know. you're pretty excited to see the warriors come back. it is hard to believe they're only going to miss 16 games because it seems like this has been going on forever. two weeks after david stern said they were heading into the nuclear winter for the nba, the players and owners have finally agreed to a deal to end the lockout and start the season on christmas day. >> literally, thousands of people who are dependent upon playing of our games. at arenas, at parking lots, at restaurants around the stadium. and we resolve that despite some even bumps this evening, that the greater good required us to knock ourselves out and come to this tentative understanding. >> the deal is expected to be finalized later this week.

assuming there are no setbacks, training camps would open on december 9th. the 66-game regular season is set to tip off on christmas. the warriors open the next night against the bulls. >> oregon was the favorite to win against the beavers. stanford would win the pac 12 north. duck fans not jumping off the bandwagon after last week's loss to usc. oregon up 7-0. shawn manion dumps it off to stevenston. he has plenty of room to run. 58 yards later, the tie game. manion throws for 289 yards and three touchdowns but it wasn't enough to keep up with oregon. darren thomas hits bomber for one of his four touchdown passes. the ducks gain close to 700 yards as they go on to beat oregon state, 49-21. so, it will be oregon hosting ucla next friday night in the first ever pac 12 championship game. the winner will earn a spot in

the rose bowl. cal wrapped up its regular season with a 47-38 win in tempe against arizona state. the bears won three of their final four games to finish 7-5 and will likely be going to el paso for the sun bowl or san diego for the holiday bowl. let's go down to s.e.c. country. the iron bowl between auburn and number two alabama. first quarter, the crimson tide kept the tigers by surprise with a fleece liquor. mccarran throws deep to bell. we'll have to wait a week to see if they'll get a rematch with lsu in the national title game. you can't talk rivalry games without mentioning michigan and ohio state. the buckeyes led 24-23 at the half but they couldn't stop robinson. the wolverines quarterback threw for three touchdowns and ran for two more. michigan beats ohio state 40-
