>> especially flowing in some of the valleys right now and inside the bay, very dense fog. dense fog advisory in effect until 9:00 in the morning today. watch out for visibility less than a quarter of a mile. some places less than an eighth of a mile. so be very, very careful out on the roadways today. we will let you know when that might lift in a few minutes. right now let's check out the roads with elizabeth. >> thanks, lawrence. so far no accidents. the fog is definitely an issue for at least a start of the morning commute and see it toward the bay bridge toll plaza and a follow advisory issued by chp for several bridges including the bay bridge. we're also seeing it along portions of san mateo county, commuting along the peninsula, to contra costa county, and up by highway 4, so yes, the visibility is going to be an issue. and we will let you know if we see any accidents but so far right now, we're pretty good. >> what lafayette, coming in that way? >> through the macarthur maze. across the bay bridge. and the upper and lower decks. >> okay. thanks, elizabeth. >> be careful out there. >> a meeting canceled earlier this month off fears of violence

is finally happening today. >> protesters are expected to show up for the uc board of regents meeting that is happening across the state. and gail diaz is in san francisco at one of it those meeting sites. good morning. >> good morning. that meeting is going to be happening at 9:00 this morning, and yes, one of the meeting sites is the building right behind me, but as i step aside and show you something interesting when we got here this morning. as we zoom in and we will see that barricades are up. campus police have put up barricades because there is talk as we mentioned that student protesters especially with the occupy movement, will show up. and this meeting has happened a couple of weeks ago but the regents are postponed because of credible threats of violence am and are remember that the students stormed one of the bank of america branches in the financial district, and they even pitched a tent, and 95 of them were eventually arrested. and what is expected to be the hot topic at today's meeting is the incident at u c davis a week and a half ago when campus police pepper sprayed those

demonstrators. they outraged the campus. and not only the campus, but also the rest of the country. because that video went viral. and the meeting will now include a one-hour time slot per student and the public, to make comments. usually the time slot for comments is limited to 20 minutes. and now, also on the agenda today, regents expected to decide if they will ask the state for increase funding and hopefully that increased funding will prevent them from raising tuition. we're told that the board will not be voting on a specific tuition proposal. and yes, this is one of the sites that regents will be meeting because interestingly enough the regents will be tell conferencing each other for today's meeting, from this campus and merced and davis ucla. >> back to you guys. >> i'm sure they will be at all campuses. thank you. 4:33 now. two of the nation's biggest cities are telling their occupy protesters enough is enough.

done in l.a., protesters are still gatheredded near city hall despite a deadline to vacate the area by 12:01 this morning. >> this is not something that you can just stop. like you cannot stop it. >> police say there will likely be arrests at some point and they hope they don't have to use force. no word on a time line for when the arrest might begin. more occupy protests in l.a. this is a live picture right now, from ktla our sister station down there. mayor antonio villaigarosa released a statement late last night saying protesters would get ample time to remove their belongings. he has said he sympathized with the protesters but is concerned about public health and safety. and in philadelphia, dozens of occupy tents are still up at the plaza despite a similar

deadline yesterday afternoon. some protesters did leave peacefully. and police continue to monitor the situation there. there are no reports of are arrests at the philly site since the deadline has come and gone. protesters there are getting the boot to make room for a construction project. >> and while there seems to be an eviction trend of occupy camps around the can country, there is still an encampment here in san francisco. dozens of tents continue to cover an area in justin herman plaza, across the embarcadero from the ferry building. supporters say the evictions elsewhere help build support for the movement. >> the police raids and the police brutality that has been happening around the country is really making people aware of kind of what is at stake here. >> san francisco's mayor has offered to talk to campers about moving to a former school street on mission street. some like the idea but nothing has come to fruition just yet. a paddle border is missing along the san mateo county coast. the coast guard is leading the

search there at half moon bay. the search for rodrigo ruiz is centered around pillar point harbor, reported missing yesterday afternoon after he failed to return. a number of agencies checked the coast from the water and the air but they still haven't found him. a firefighter remains in critical condition after being run down in san francisco on thanksgiving morning. police have now released surveillance video. showing the suspect that they're trying to find. he is the man in the long white t-shirt, standing at the counter. police say the suspect and cal state firefighter albert barto got into a fight at a fast food restaurant and a little later a black suv hit barto, apparently on purpose. >> speaking from the firefighters, this is a horrible experience that no fireman, police officer, nobody would ever want to have to go through this. >> the suspect is described as a mixed race or latin male between 18 to 24 years old. with short black hair. and he was driving a black mazda

cx type suv with possible front end damage and 12 spokes sports rims. well, the funeral procession for a danville marine is expected to cause some delays today. the family of lance corporal joshua corral will receive his body at traverse air force base this morning and travel 680 to danville ending at the funeral home on hart's way just before noon. he was killed in combat operations in afghanistan 10 days ago. mixed results on california roads during the holiday weekend. the highway patrol says more than 130 drunken drivers were arrested statewide. $ 1300 drunken drivers were arrested from wednesday eaching to saturday night. and fatal car accidents nearly doubled over that period, 3 2á 1 deadly -- 21 deadly crashes compared to just 12 last year. >> a little foggy. a little cold. >> the fog is the big deal, right? >> very, dangerous. not to bring us down, but fog

the leading cause of death, weather-related cause of death in california. that's what we're seeing outside this morning. very dense fog out there right now. visibility less than an eighth of a mile. be very careful. if you're headed around the bay area this morning. the dense fog is not inside the bay. and it is not going to lift for a few hours. probably until 9:00. that takes through the commute time. be very careful traveling around the bay area this morning. temperatures chilly. cold fog and 42 in santa rosa. 45 in san jose. and 45 in livermore. 47 in oakland. i think by the afternoon, it is going to be tricky with the low clouds and the dense fog but if it begins to lift, only temperatures left in the 50s. as some of the interior valleys, like concord and san jose. 54 degrees. and 63 degrees, a little more sunshine up the coastline. the next couple of days, starting out with morning clouds and fog. but by the time we get into

tuesday night and into wednesday, likely going to see some very strong winds whipping around the bay area. that will help to clear out the low clouds and the fog. and also we will see some pretty brisk conditions around the bay area as well. it looks like we stay dry for the next 5-7 days. let's check out the traffic with elizabeth. >> the fog is really out there. and it could cause some problems for the morning commute. so far we have not seen any major accidents but i got to say, it is a little bit scary out there. visibility is really know in some spots. as you're coming through the macarthur maze. some of the brings and a look at the gold gold -- golden gate bridge and traffic heading into san francisco. several fog advisories including one for the benecia bridge and you can't really see the bridge very much from our camera right now. easier to see the bay bridge toll plaza but a fog advisory across the deck and you can see on the oakland side and the san francisco side, of the span. and chp issued a couple more fog advisories not even for bridges, and a portion along mountain view pretty foggy and stretches through san mateo county and

woodside by edgewood and apparently fog is so thick, they went ahead and issued an advisory there as well. mass transit might be a good option. if you want to skip the roads. and bart is running all trains on time. and ace train number one is off to a good start with no delay. muni, cal train and ferries reported no problems this morning. much more traffic and weather coming up. in the meantime, back to you. >> thanks. 4:40 now. and the shopping hype continues today. this is cyber monday. so the monday after thanksgiving is the traditional start to the online holiday shopping season. the national retail federation predicts that 123 million americans will shop online today from their office or their home computers. over the weekend, an estimated 226 million americans shopped online or in stores and that is a new record. a lot of shopping going on. >> did you buy anything? >> no, i'm waiting -- >> for the week before christmas? >> yes. >> kind of the same way. >> 4:40. another coach with sexual abuse

stra a dramatic rescue, in l.a. yesterday. strangers rushing to the aid of three people, pinned to a pick-up truck, and rolled over in interstate 10 in the riverside county desert and california highway patrol made it to the scene as several drivers as you can see lifted the truck and pulled the female passenger out to safety. no word on what caused the rollover or her condition. but mighty lucky woman there. >> amazing. $2 million. that is the damage estimate from a three alarm apartment fire in cupertino. that fire destroyed eight units of the village green apartments

on homestead road. eight other units have smoke and water damage from the fire that happened saturday night. and it started after a woman put oil on the stove to cook french fries. >> got distracted. went into the bedroom. and they were in there doing cross word puzzles and then all of a sudden the smoke detector alerted them of the smoke. >> it took only a few minutes for that fire to spread to other units. the flames chased hundreds of people from their apartments. some of them went to a red cross shelter at homestead high school next door. a berkeley apartment building ravaged by a fire, a five alarm fire will be demolished today. the five story building has been red tagged since the fire that happened 10 days ago. it was home to a lot of cal students. but the cause is still not known. polls will be open for another few hours in egypt for the first round of the country's historic parliamenty elections. voters lining up by the hundreds in some locations. this comes as the protesters turn up the heat there. demanding the interim military government to step aside.

the military has been in charge since february when protesters managed to oust long time president hosni mubarak. and three american college students are now watching the events in egypt at a safe distance from their homes back here in the united states. derrick sweeney, greg porter, luke gates, arrived in their hometowns in separate states over the weekend just in time for the holiday. they were arrested the previous weekend, accused of throwing fire bombs at security forces who are clashing with protesters in cairo. syracuse university has fired an assistant basketball coach. he is accused of child sex abuse. bernie fine is accused of molesting two former ball boys. he was fired after espn released a tape of a phone conversation from 2002. that conversation was between fine's wife lori, and one of the accusers who secretly recorded the conversation. >> it was determined that lori fine, who he says had a window into this abuse, in fact literally, one time saw the

abuse, going on, in the home, through a basement window, with her husband and bobby davis. and she alleged that that actually did happen on the tape. >> also a third accuser has come forward. a man who is now 23 years old. but his father doubts that the allegation is true. 4:46 now. newt gingrich on a lot streak. >> it is the big endorsement from the northeast. coming up. plus, a big weekend at the box office. did fans sink their teeth into the new twilight movie for a second week in a row? and the cost of christmas is going up. how much you're going to have to shell out for some partridges, pear tree, and a few turtle doves. when we come back. . dense fog showing up around the bay area this morning. be very careful, headed out the door, when will that lift, we will talk about that coming up. ,, ,, ,,,,,,,,,,

big bite of the box office this holiday weekend. breaking dawn. part one of the next to last installment of the twilight saga took a big bite out of the box office this weekend. the film took in $42 million to finish in the top spot. the second week in a row. i feel like dancing to the music. ♪ >> it is waking us up. >> the new muppet movie couldn't knock it off the throne opening at number two. happy feet 2, arthur christmas and hugo rounded out the top five. all about family movies. >> if you're not awake now, you're awake. ♪ >> if you want to dance, go ahead. but if you're driving though, be careful. a lot of fog is out there this early in the morning. >> lawrence, when is it going to clear up? >> i watched the big movie, the elf on the shelf. that was huge. big. my girl loved it. >> i'm glad you liked it. >> is that a new one? >> i think so. i haven't seen it before. >> you will be seeing a lot of those guys. and coming out around the bay area right now, we have a lot of fog out there. be careful on the roadways.

very thick early on this morning. and some visibility is less than an eighth of a mile being reported in the oakland area and dense fog to begin with. i think by the afternoon, still some of the fog lingering in parts of the bay area and especially the valleys, with more clearing inside the bay and out to the coastline today. and some of the valleys in the south bay could see the temperatures warming up near 70 degrees but you get to the east bay, and boy, a lot of the temperatures, boy, going to be very cool, only in the 50s, with the low clouds and that dense fog. and the visibilities are very low this morning. all the way inside the bay. the fog has made its way back in. so some of that is stretching into san francisco right now. but the temperatures are staying cool as well. 46 are degrees in concord right now. 42 in santa rosa. and 45 in livermore. and 48 are degrees in san francisco. a lot of clouds streaming up above the clouds. and because of that cloud cover, probably not seeing a lot of mixing in the atmosphere. that means the fog will linger around a little bit longer for today. and computer models picking up on this. the high clouds drifting overhead down below trying to make sought some of the low

clouds and fog. but late tonight, early tomorrow morning, that begins to reform. we're not done with the fog yet. another day of dense fog in the early morning hours and then slow clearing in the afternoon. fairly nice in the south bay this afternoon. 68 degrees one of the warmer spots in morgan hill. 56 and sunshine by the afternoon in millipitas with a couple of passing high clouds and east bay the temperatures are tricky where you see a lot of the dense fog and plan on 50s into concord and also into fairfield and the dense fog finally lifting about the middle of the morning and a lot easier to drive around the bay area. and inside the bay, you're looking at temperatures mainly in the 60s and probably some 50s up to santa rosa. and san rafael. you get that little weak offshore wind and that tends to pump in the cool air in that direction. all right. in the next couple of day, it looks like more fog on the way as we head to wednesday and thursday. big time winds kicking up, swaoáeb sweeping out the fog but -- sweeping out the fog but blustery around the bay area. let's look at traffic and weather with elizabeth. >> thank you, lawrence. traffic impacted by the weth ter this morning. in fact all of our cameras are seeing that thick dense fog visibility is going to be an

issue in a lot of places across the bay area. this is actually millipitas, a live look at the that 80/237 interchange and i realize it is pretty difficult to see. and visibility really down to almost nothing in some spots, especially commuting through the macarthur maze and chp issued a number of fog advisories this morning, including for bridges, if you're coming across the benecia bridge, you can't really see it from the view of the camera. southbound 680, really heavy fog and all across the upper deck, tháp went ahead and issue -- chp went ahead and issued a fog advisory for the bay bridge as well and we see it across the golden gate with our camera and you don't often see it approaching the pay gates of the bay bridge. and it extends from the oakland and san francisco side of the span and lower deck as well obviously. more fog advisories, near mountain view. the chp went ahead and issued that near 101. and portions of 280 commuting along san mateo county. so definitely slow down. and give yourself plenty of extra time. it may take a little extra to head to work or wherever you're

off to. mass transit is a good option as well. bart, so far systemwide. no delay ace train number one looks good. phaoufrpby, cal train, your fer -- muni, cal train, your ferries off to a good start. and westbound 580 so far so good out of the altamont pass. and all the way to livermore. no brake lights across that stretch. we can't show you traffic near the dublin interchange because it is so foggy in our camera. the westbound highway 4, no brake lights across the stretch to antioch and it looks good to pittsburg and to concord heading out to 242. remember, kcbs, the late traffic information and latest updates in weather and fog advisories. find that at 106.9 f.m. that's traffic and weather. back to you. 5:43 now. congress return -- 4:53. congress returning from a thanksgiving recess this week with the nation's debt at the top of the agenda. last week the bipartisan super committee failed to agree on a deficit cutting plan.

prior to wednesday's deadline. so now senators say the first order of business this week will be a renewed push to get a package to reduce the nation's debt by more than a trillion dollars in order to keep the number of automatic spending cuts from going into effect. meanwhile, new hampshire's largest newspaper is endorsing this man, newt gingrich, for the republican presidential nomination. new hampshire's union leaders editorial comes as the state prepares for the first in the nation's primary in january. this report helps to build on gingrich's recent rise in the polls. former utah governor john hutson says the endorsement means the g.o.p. race for names is unpredictable. doctors begin facing a steep medicare cut that could undermine health care for millions of medicare recipients. >> that's right. last year, the cut was about 20%. this time, the cuts are more than 27%. that's unless congress does something by january 1. more health news this morning, evidence that vaccinations of children for

chicken pox is actually protecting their younger siblings from that illness. the centers for disease control says that the number of infants who got chicken pox declined nearly 90% from 1995 to 2008. and researchers believe fewer infants are being exposed because more of their older siblings are being vaccinated. and there is a new way to help identify children with attention deficit hyper activity disorder. doctors in new york did mris of children with adhd and tests showed that regions of the brain involved in processing visual information did not function normally in those kids. 4:55 now. a special delivery to the u.s. capital building today. and it is coming all the way from california sierra nevada mountains. there it is. 65-foot white fur tree was selected to spruce up the holidays. and for congress, the tree has been touring the country. since november 8. making stops in a number of cities, including santa claus, indiana, of course, the lights will be turned on december 6. inflation has taken its toll
