your realtime captioner is linda marie macdonald. feeling the freeze! the bay area gets a blast of some of the coalest temperatures yet. -- coldest temperatures yet. how low they'll go. >> and an east bay "occupy" camp wearing out its welcome, putting students at risk. and good morning, everybody it is tuesday, december 6. good to have you with us. it's cold! >> it is cold outside. >> i'm frank mallicoat. it is very cold. >> and i'm grace lee. actually kind of nice and brisk with the windows open a little bit. >> good sleeping weather, i guess that's what they call that. >> you might need some gloves and hat and all that good stuff. let's check in with kristy seifkin and find out just how cold it will be today.

>> really cold temperatures this morning. in fact, in freezing territory in some places. look at thighs these freeze andfrostt advisories until 9 a.m. bundle up this morning. here's a look at some of those chilly temperatures right now. freezing in santa rosa, napa and fairfield. not much warmer in concord at 34. fremont currently at 36. mountain view at 41. so a little warmer relatively speaking there. now, part of the reason that we're seeing these chilly conditions as you can see on slight we'r in the clear, no cloud cover to keep us warm. this is a similar pattern for the rest of the week. this afternoon's highs will be simple floor yesterday, close to seasonal. high 50s, low 60s. so 62 as the high in mountain

view, 61 high in oakland, fairfield topping out at 57. santa rosa high of 61. so conditions pretty simple floor yesterday for tuesday and then wednesday seeing a little more cloud cover in the picture. some overnight fog building in wednesday into thursday. then as we make our way late weekend into the start of the workweek, there is the potential that we'll see a chance of showers. certainly it's a ways out. today just focus on keeping warm. you will need your coat. that's a look at weather. here's elizabeth with your traffic report. >> we are just dealing with pretty much roadwork across the bay area. here's a live look at the bay bridge toll plaza. so far no delay, no metering lights but there are lanes blocked on the upper and lower decks until about 5:00 this morning. your other bridges, san mateo bridge is fine. should be about 13 minutes in either direction across the span between hayward and the peninsula and more roadwork, this time on the dumbarton bridge. the san mateo bridge no

roadwork but lanes blocked on the dumbarton bridge both directions approaching the high- rise as well as the nimitz, 880 through oakland, southbound at high street you can see it if you look closely at the top of this camera there is a little bit of roadwork blocking lanes across that stretch just north of the coliseum. bart all on time. bart, ace, muni and caltrain and your ferries all on time. there is a frost advisory in the east bay right now. gil diaz is in pleasanton watching the temperature continue to fall. gil, good morning. >> reporter: hi, good morning, a very chilly morning. you know it's chilly when you can see the -- my breath coming out of my mouth. i'm wearing also my dandy earmuffs here. we're it is mission plaza shopping center on santa rita road. focusing on this huge

temperature gauge at the shopping plaza. it is 39 degrees. as the sunrises the temperatures should climb. if you have a green thumb, make sure you protect your sensitive plants. cover them so they doesn't get damaged this morning. while you're covering your plants, make sure you're bundled up, as well. exposure to this chilly weather can result in hypothermia, frostbite, dehydration and carbon monoxide poisoning. people we talked to had mixed feelings about the big chill. [ pause ] >> reporter: now, other advice you should be doing is winterizing your home. this is advice and tips from the state emergency management agency. check your home's heating system. make sure your home is properly

insulated. weather strip doors and windows. inspect and flush your water heater. clear your gutters, clear out the drainage and replace batteries in smoke detectors. the bay area air quality management district says don't burn wood right now. it's not a "spare the air" alert right now but if you can refrain from burning wood today, you won't have those "spare the air" alerts the next several days. back to you in the "warm" studio. later. another person was killed walking in traffic in san jose. a 34-year-old man became the 20th pedestrian or bicyclist killed in san jose this year. he was hit by a pickup truck while crossing monterey highway near old tully road last night. the truck driver was not arrested. last week another bicyclist was killed on the seemed road. new this morning the piedmont city council has given tentative approval for a new sports complex. this is on the oakland border. the privately fund $6 million project would include a field for soccer, baseball, practice field, parking lot and dog park. organizers have scaled back the original plan because of opposition from residents. but critics are still concerned about the environmental impact. >> they are going to cut down 155 trees and dig 80 feet into a hillside and build a huge retaining wall along moraga avenue that would be just an unsightly thing.

>> project supporters say the complex is crucial to support piedmont's growing youth sports programs and insist it will be safe to cross moraga avenue from an existing field nearby. tonight santa clara and the 49ers will lay out their funding plan for a new stadium at the first of two public meetings. city stadium authority has secured $850 million in loans from three different banks. the city would pay back the loans over a 25-year period through ticket sales, rent from the team and naming rights. critics worry the stadium won't generate enough profit. the 49ers say they will make sure that debt is paid if there is a problem. mayor lee is trying to throw a "hail mary" to persuade the team to stay in san francisco. he is meeting with jet york, the owner, -- jed york, the owner, on thursday. he says he wants to be ready in case the league doesn't approve the move. lee believes the raiders would be more likely to play here in

san francisco than down in santa clara. a rise in crime at "occupy" camp in berkeley is raising concerns among city officials as well as a high school principal there. the camp at civic center park keeps growing. this is across the street from berkeley high school. the principal is now warning parents that the camp is complicating the supervision of students. and the assistant city manager says crimes like battery and sexual assault are more frequent. a city councilman says "occupiers" should move on to other forms of protest. we'll have a live report on this story at 5 a.m. the "occupy" movement is moving in a new direction today in san francisco, oakland and dozens of other cities across the country. rallies and marches will support people who are losing their homes to foreclosure this. morning in oakland, families facing foreclosure will march to banks. a rally is planned in the bayview neighborhood in san

francisco. two hours from now president obama leaves the white house to go to kansas. he is trying to drum up support it extend payroll tax cuts that are set to run out at the end of the month. the white house says the average middle class family will have to pay an extra $1,000 if the tax cuts expire. the president wants the nation's wealthiest to pay the freight. >> my message to congress is this: keep your word to the american people and don't raise taxes on them right now. now is not the time to slam on the brakes. >> it would hurt small business and job creation. >> the white house has set up a countdown clock ticking away the days. nancy pelosi claims she has plenty of dirt on republican presidential candidate newt gingrich who is leading in the polls now for the gop. she implied she may reveal details of a 1990s ethics probe against gingrich if he becomes

the republican nominee. gingrich, who had seen a big surge in the polls recently says he has absolutely nothing to hide. some high-profile support for mitt romney. >> form he vice president dan quayle -- former violent dan quayle is expected to officially endorse romney today saying that romney is the most credible candidate in the race. you might remember he served as vice president under president george h.w. bush from 1989 to 19993. developing news this morning out of afghanistan. more than 50 people are dead from two suicide attacks. most of the deaths were in kabul. an take blew himself you have -- attacker blew himself you have in a crowd of worshippers. hundreds were killed and injured when a bicycle exploded near a convoy of shiites in a city in northern afghanistan. world markets rocked by more bad news out of europe. how a credit downgrade could

city's budget deficit are not as bad as expected but mayor reed still pushing for a ballot measure on pension reform saying retirement costs have jumped dramatically. bring your own bag or pay up. that could soon the rule in san francisco if the board votes to expand a plastic bag ban today. it was the first to introduce the flaw 2007. but the ban -- the law in 2007. but the ban only applies to big grocers. the new ban would apply to all retailers. businesses would be able to charge shoppers 10 cents for reusable bags. a new team of city safety workers hit one of san francisco's most problem plagued streets. 11 community ambassadors now patrolling midmarket from powell street bart state to van ness the latest attempt to revitalize the area and attractin big business. they will answer questions but

welcome back. 4:48. park rangers in yosemite have found the body of a third victim from an accident last summer. three hikers fell into the merced river and went over a waterfall. they had stepped over a railing to pose for a picture and a young woman slipped and fell. then two male companions tried to save her. rangers believe they have the woman's body now. the two men's remains were found earlier.

the former chairman of hewlett-packard has died. patricia dunn passed away sunday after a decade long battle with cancer. she was once one of the most powerful women in corporate america. but her career was tarnished in 2006 after she authorized an undercover probe of members of the hp board. she was indicted on four felony counts all of which were dropped as her health declined. dunn was 58 years old. the sentencing phase begins today for rod blagojevich. the former illinois is expected to get about 10 years in jail. he was convicted on corruption charges including attempting to sell president obama's old senate seat, you may. sentencing is expected sometime tomorrow. may be two books published by those involved in a sensational murder case. amanda knox hired a washington lawyer to work on a possible book deal. the same lawyer has represented some presidents in the past including president obama, also work on a book deal for knox,

her ex-boyfriend from italy. volcanic eruptions in indonesia is forcing thousands of people to evacuate the area. >> mount gamma llama is a volcano that towers 5600 feet. it started sunday, continued yesterday. heavy rainfall produced cold lava flow sending mud, debris into residential areas there. so far, no reports of anyone hurt. gammallama. >> amazing, considering the scope. >> gammallama. we are cold, aren't we are? >> there are warnings all around. frost this morning, we're seeing freezing temperatures in some places. you guys are excellent weather forecasters. seeing temperatures in the 30s and some high 20s in some locations. as we take a look at some of the alerts that we have in effect, freeze warning in the north bay valleys. temperatures in the 20s and

30s, certainly with these cold conditions. if you are awake right now, get outside and grab sensitive plants. these warnings in effect until 9:00 this morning. here's a look at some chilly temperatures that we're seeing now. 35 for redwood city. san francisco at 46. freezing in santa rosa, napa, fairfield, concord 34, cooler in livermore. there is sunshine in store but the temperatures won't be very warm. high 50s, low 60s. numbers that are simple floor what we saw yesterday and pretty -- similar to what we saw yesterday and normal for december. high pressure in place. active weather north of the jet stream is keeping us drive and keeping the winds that we saw yesterday and the few days prior out of the picture. so nice around the bay today in terms of sunny conditions. this afternoon, 60 for palo alto, 59 san mateo, milpitas topping out at 59.

some high 50s inland. dublin 59. benicia 58, vallejo 58. high 50s in berkeley, richmond, low 60s in oakland today. san rafael at 57. same story for kentfield and for sausalito. stinson beach at 57 today. so sunshine in store today then more cloud cover for wednesday. and then fog returning to the picture wednesday and thursday. partly cloudy skies for the end of the week and then the possibility of showers as we end our weekend and start next workweek. so we'll certainly keep an eye on that for you. elizabeth has traffic. >> thank you. we are look at our bridges across the bay area. our bridges are fine including this live look at the san mateo bridge. taillights, commute direction out of hayward towards the peninsula. no problems in either direction. we do have some areas of overnight roadwork. now, this actually hasn't been picked up. i'm not sure why the question mark is out there but until about 7:00 this morning, southbound 880 you will find at

least the left lane blocked between old bayshore highway and 280 so watch out. we can see a little slowing on our sensors across that stretch so obviously drivers taking it extra slow around the cones. in the meantime coming out of downtown san jose, you can't really see much on 280 so not too bad right now out of downtown heading towards cupertino. rest of the bridges off the bay bridge, there are actually some lanes blocked on the upper deck this morning in the commute direction. actually on the lower deck, as well. it should be wrapping up by 6:00. i said 5:00 earlier. it's actually 6:00 when they are expected to pick that up. this is a live look at the fremont street exit first exit into san francisco so overall shouldn't slow you down no metering lights or delay before the pay gates. 880 they are doing some paving work in both directions of the nimitz between fruitvale and 980. this is ongoing paving work. warning signs are up. maybe you can see a little bit

[ baby screams ] when it comes to children's temper tantrums, there is apparently a method to their madness. a study shows that tantrums follow a consistent pattern of sad sounds mixed with peaks of anger according to u.s. researchers who wired toddlers for sound and analyzed it.

the trick to ending tantrums to do nothing. when sadness is all that's left kids reach out for comfort. you can add a cupertino high school senior to the list of the brightest minds here in the bay area maybe in the nation. there she is. angela zang of monte vista high won $100,000 scholarship from simmons. the 17-year-old created a particle that could one day be used to deliver cancer drugs directly to the tumor without affecting the healthy cells around it. this is a smart young lady. zhang says her research was driven in part by her grandfather's death from lung cancer. if you are doing cancer research in high school, you're a smart person. >> i think we could say that. stanford quarterback andrew luck is one of five finalists for the heisman trophy. >> he is off to new york this weekend. luck is hoping to become the second stanford player to win the award the first of course long time ago quarterback jim
