warnings.. police finally move in and clear out the camp at plaza. we begin with breaking news. "occupy sf" evicted after weeks. warnings. police have finally moved in and cleared out the camp at justin herman plaza of the dozens of people were arrested overnight. we're hearing of reports of injuries to protestors as well as police chief. gil diaz reports. >> reporter: major event happening here at justin herman plaza and the embarcadero. chief suhr held a conference. chief, good morning. thank you for joining us this morning. it started after 1:00.
4:31 am
how did it go? >> it went very well. we worked in concert with the department of public works as you can see behind us here they are cleaning it up. some demonstrators have left came back and have been on market street so we are going to have some more arrests. >> reporter: why today? >> as sure it's not been lost on everyone, we have been negotiating and the mayor has been incredibly patient in trying to figure out the situation and thought we get them over to mission. then yesterday e-mails weren't returned even though department heads went over and tried to finalize the site. we weren't getting any further negotiations. they had broken off and after last thursday's attacks on the officers, the situation had to happen so tonight was the night. >> reporter: i see that full force with the police department as well as sheriff's
4:32 am
department. over 50 arrests this morning. do you think that was expected? do you think you're expecting more arrests? >> i think like i said we are a making more arrests behind me now. i don't think a lot of force had to be used because we had superior numbers and a good plan. some people wanted to be arrested. we gave them a chance to leave. some left peacefully although a couple of officers were assaulted. some who left came back and now they are being arrested. >> how were the two officers assaulted? >> i'm not -- i don't know about the second one. i know the one a metal chair was thrown over some bodies that were in front of him and it hit him in the face mask of his helmet, broke his face shield and pressed into his face but he's okay. >> reporter: we have been covering the "occupy" movement for weeks trying to tell the stories about the 99% woes.
4:33 am
what can you tell our viewers about, you know, inflicting this on the 99% who are trying to make a change in ou society? >> the economy is tough on everybody including all the people and residents and the businesses of this area who are also part of the 99%. the mayor is trying to be thoughtful of everybody in the 99% including himself. so at the end of the day, this area deserves relief. they originally were sympathetic with this particular group on behalf of the movement and it deteriorated to not be what it once was. >> reporter: lastly, i know that maintenance crews are still here taking down the camps. what's going to happen to their belongings? >> the trash will be dissupposed of. the personal effects will be baghdad, marked and tagged and folks can go to the department
4:34 am
of public works yard and pick their things up. they are conscientious of taking care of people's belongings. >> thank you chief suhr for joining thus morning. it happened after 1:00. over 50 arrests. two officers assaulted. one officer hit in the face by a thrown chair by one of the protestors. as you can see behind me, maintenance crews are hard at work and chief suhr did just say that all of the campers, the protestors' belongings will be going to the department of public works where they will able to retrieve them later today. chief suhr did say earlier this morning that they hope to get this cleared out by morning. so by the time the financial district employees get here this hopefully going to be all clear at the justin herman plaza. back to you guys.

>> all right, gil. nice job. thank you. anser hassan has also been out at the camp this morning and joins us live by telephone. tell us what's happening with the protestors that i imagine are still hanging around a little dazed and shocked, i imagine. >> reporter: good morning, frank. that's right. i'm here live at market street. i was just thrown out of where the protestors were protesting. in fact, the san francisco riot gear -- police have thrown people out. i don't know if you can hear behind me but there's a large number of protestors who are chanting, you know, obviously upset with what's going on. some of the folks said they were ready. they knew the language has been ramped up. communication broke down between the city and the "occupy" folks so they said they were ready. they knew this was going to happen and now their next strategy is to set up mobile camps and how that's going to work is they say they have these camps that are ready to go in 10 to 15 minutes. they will find places and set up wherever they feel they need to throughout san francisco.
4:36 am
they are not giving any locations. they will tear down and move within 10 and 15 minutes. they plan noontime protestors in front of federal building but again, right now i was just thrown out -- i can't exactly see what's going on behind me. but there are a large number of protestors chanting. police folks have drawn their riot gear and, you know, they're ready to -- to kind of quiet down this trial as gil may have spoke earlier there were two arrests made. two protestors had attacked sfpd with chairs hitting one in the face. most of them are wearing riot gear so no one was severely injured or anything of that nature. i'll go back in as soon as i get off the phone. our photographer is heading that way. the way this area is set up, they have the entire market street area near the hyatt hotel, the embarcadero area, shut down. garages are closed. barricades are set up even
