plan to march tonight. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. several groups have been talking about a real lack of unity here in oakland. we have the recall petition for mayor jean quan. a glut of gun violence which has taken dozens of lives this year, and then tugging right now on everybody's heart strings, the death of that toddler. he is expected to be taken off life support today. here's his picture. hiram johnson is going to be honored at a peace march today. doctors are preparing to take him off life support at 1:00 this afternoon. that's after tests on the boy who is almost two years old showed no brain activity. hiram was shot last month in east oakland when a group of people shot into a crowd that had gathered for the filming of a rap video. seven other people were hurt and there have been no arrests in the case. hiram isn't the first baby to be innocently caught in crossfire. 3-year-old carlos nava was killed in east oakland earlier this year. that was a drive-by shooting on 64th and international boulevard and that's where

today's march is going to begin at 5 p.m. followed by a community meeting at 6:00 at greenleaf elementary school on 17th street and that area is part of the mayor's 100- block focus for crime prevention. so today a lot of people are going to be pressing mayor jean quan on how her plan is going to have some sort of immediate effect on the violence here in oakland. back to you guys. >> anne makovec in oakland this morning, thanks, anne. we are following some breaking news now out of europe. italian police say a package bomb has exploded outside a public office in rome. we understand at least one person is injured and we'll bring you more information when it is available. and a developing story. the solano county sheriff's office is looking for a teenaged girl that might have been kidnapped. they say kristina almanza left a voicemail saying she was being held hostage by five men. she is 17. she was last seen driving a navy blue 1999 oldsmobile

silhouette minivan california plate 4ebs066. if you have any information you're urged to call the police. an oakland kindergartener is taking medical marijuana for a rare form of epilepsy. his father was desperate to find something that was effective for little jayden's seizures. he told the tv show weed wars that no pharmaceuticals worked so he turned to pot. it's a nonintoxicating type because the chp has been removed. it's administered like a baby aspirin, using an eyedropper. it tastes like honey. >> we introduced him to cbd- rich cannabis in a tincture for. >> reporter: to be clear he is not the first child that you treated. >> no. we have treated several children here at harborside health center, all of whom have had extremely grave illnesses. >> harborside health center says the cannabis was

recommended by a medical doctor and he is being monitored by several mds. new firefighters are reporting sunday in san jose. they graduate this afternoon for the firefighter class of 2012 and 2011. a $15 million federal grant made it possible for san jose to hire the firefighters. this morningings organizers with "occupy oakland" are joining with local union leaders to lay out plans for a blockade of the port of oakland. on monday, occupy groups all along the west coast are plan shutdowns, including oakland, los angeles, seattle and anchorage. the longshoreman's union does not support the demonstration. we'll have more in a live report coming up at 5:00. the majority of oaklanders are still unhappy with oakland mayor jean quan's job performance but despite a recall effort her numbers are actually improving. our exclusive eyewitness news poll finds 64% disapprove of the job she is doing. but a month ago that number was

at 71%. and fewer than half say they support the recall petition. 34% oppose it. organizers need to collect 20,000 signatures for recall. it's 4:36. virginia police are trying to find a motive for the deadly campus shooting where a policeman at virgina tech university was shot and killed. about 150 people gathered last night for a candlelight vigil near the memorial to a shooting that happened back in 2007. over 30 died then. the officer who died in the latest incident was an army veteran. he was killed during a routine traffic stop yesterday. but not by anyone in the car. police say the gunman walked up, opened fire and then ran away and then later apparently killed himself. >> the police pulled up and they opened his car door and when they opened it, he just fell out towards the ground, sorry, and, uhm, i see his face covered in blood. >> state police say ballistic tests confirmed that the officer and the suspect were

killed with the same gun. the suspect has not been publicly identified. 65 people were killed in a hospital fire in eastern india. most of the victims who were patients there died of smoke inhalation. government officials say medical staff at the private hospital ran out without even helping the patients. the fire started in the basement. heavy smoke engulfed the building quickly. it took an hour for firefighters to get to the scene because of very narrow streets in india. u.s. stock futures point towards a higher opening when wall street opens for business this morning. the fallout over europe's debt crisis is affecting world markets. asian stocks closed lower today. in early trading in europe, markets are mixed. a summit on europe's debt crisis has failed to get all 27 european union members on board a new treaty. leaders of 23 nations have agreed to surrender some sovereignty in an effort to end the crisis. france and germany are among the countries supporting the

plan but four others say no. great britain is one of them. >> britain is out of it and will remain out of it. other countries are in it and are having to make radical changes including giving up sovereignty to try and make it work. >> under the proposal, nations would be required to balance their budgets. politicians might have to stay in washington through part of their scheduled christmas holiday. >> the issue of payroll tax cuts and long-term jobless benefits scheduled to expire at the end of the month. president obama says he will even put his hawaiian vacation on hold until the congress votes for extensions. the house vote is expected next week. we're here all christmas through new year's. we're right here, right? >> we'll be hanging out, no cuts. >> you're taking time off. what am i talking about? i'll be here. lawrence, you'll be here. >> news never ends. 365 days a year, we're always here! >> we never shut down. >> you'll be off, too. what do we have? >> around the bay area today we have a couple of patches of fog again, some chilly temperatures around the bay area now seeing some ground fog developing in the santa rosa area. very similar to yesterday. but i think as we head through the day today, we are going to see hazy sunshine again but again a cold start to the day. 38 degrees in livermore, 38 in napa. you have 39 degrees in vallejo and well, as we look toward the afternoon, these temperatures are going to be running up in the 50s even some low 60s. going to be some hazy sunshine around the bay area but that fog should begin to mix out. the weekend we have some changes, partly cloudy skies as we get into the latter part of saturday. and by sunday, a chance of showers, not too big but it is going to be cold, possibly wet around the bay area. could see a couple of leftover showers into monday morning. over to 880, so far, so good for the most part especially in the areas near the coliseum. we have some roadwork to report on the southbound side of 880 between embarcadero and 29th

avenue. they are alternating lanes in that area. that should be wrapped up at least though by 5:00 this morning. elsewhere, roadwork on the lower deck but it's scheduled at 7:00 this morning all the way until about 1:45 between the skyway and treasure island various lanes blocked. yesterday a backup so heads up this afternoon. and not so bad right now at the bay bridge toll plaza. says allegations against him of child sexual abuse are untrue. the former football coach is accused of abusing several boys over 15 years. he was released on bail yesterday. his wife says he is innocent. she also denies the claim by one accuser that she was home when he screamed for help from a basement bedroom. federal prosecutors want a judge to send barry bonds to prison for 15 months. a federal probation officer recommended the giants slugger get only probation when he is sentenced next friday. a jury convicted bonds in april of obstructing a grand jury's sports doping investigation. the jurors deadlocked on three other charges. making false statements and prosecutors dropped those counts. golden state warriors president says nothing is more important to the team than a new arena. ed lee called a meeting with the warriors and giants to talk about building a basketball arena south of at&t park. the warriors are also talking with oakland officials about options there.

the warriors currently play in the oldest arena in the nba. when hunger hits, don't raid a nation. the oakland team kicked off a legal fight against nation's giants hamburger over this ad. you can see the billboard off the nimitz freeway right next to the oakland coliseum. colors are suspect. the lawsuit claims the food chain is guilty of so-called ambush advertising. the team wants nation's to stop using this version of its raider nation slogan. baseball and the city of menlo park are working on ways to eat the impact of adding thousands of new employees at the facebook campus. a meeting about the 748-page environmental impact report drew about 50 people last night. traffic is actually the key issue. menlo park plans to use a car- counting device to limit the number of solo commuters. >> we anticipate limited impact because we put a lot of aggressive thought into how we can expand our commuter program. >> they have every reason to stick to keeping those single occupancy vehicle trips low and

east oakland home for hours yesterday. he shot a man, police say, outside the san leandro walmart during the black friday shopping rush. the victim is recovering. a second suspect is in custody. there is a reward to help catch bird killers in the east bay, $5,000, for any information about the killing of several ducks and geese at newhall park in concord. the dead animals were found last saturday morning. last month a number of other birds were shot to death at willow pass park, also in concord. an arrest in copper thefts from bart. 52-year-old dennis mcgwire of san francisco of accused of stealing copper wire. bart police arrested macguire at his home. they said they recovered stolen cables and other items related. mcguire was arrested for underground electrical vault thefts last year in san francisco. time for traffic and

weather. the christmas tie is on lawrence. >> i have a busload of these ties. >> how many? >> i don't even know. >> i feel like every weather guy has to have a whole selection of christmas ties. >> my family members have been giving them to me and if i don't wear them, they are upset. where's that christmas tie i gave you? >> you get an email from your mother-in-law. >> no matter how wacky they are, you have to wear them. a chilly start to the day. almost a full moon looking from our mount vaca cam. skies mostly clear although we have patchy fog developing outside. but i think as we head throughout the day it should be a decent day as high pressure still is overhead. another chilly start to the day around the bay area. these temperatures dropping off in a hurry. mostly clear though by the afternoon with some hazy sunshine. some cool temperatures. mainly in the 50s and also the low 60s. i think as we head around the bay area this morningings those

temperatures already down to the freezing mark in livermore at 32, 31 below freezing in santa rosa now with some of that fog. 35 in the napa valley. 30 in fairfield. you have 30s and 40s in and around the bay so you get the idea we have been doing this all week long. some very cold temperatures outside. if you plan to travel around the state not bad today 60s into the central valley high country looking at 40s and 50s. high pressure still holding on for another day and a half am some chilly temperatures to begin with. by the afternoon you have that hazy sunshine and it is a "spare the air" day. it looks like the temperatures by the afternoon running up in the low 60s in the santa clara valley, 59 in pacifica. east bay temperatures up in the 50s and also the low 60s. and as you make your way inside the bay, we're look at 50s and low 60s by the afternoon. next couple of days not bad although we're expecting some changes as we head in toward sunday. the clouds begin to gather. it looks like there is a chance of showers towards sunday maybe even a couple of leftover showers come monday morning. doesn't look impress ever. it will definitely be much cooler around the bay area and

of some roadwork. as lawrence mentioned it is a "spare the air" day so mass transit is recommended. and everything is right on time this morning. no delays for bart, ace, muni and caltrain and your ferries. everything is look good. also as you work your way through the south bay, still quiet. we had some earlier roadwork this week on 880 near 280 but doesn't seem to be a problem this morning. live look at 280 through downtown san jose and traffic is very quiet. just a few cars on the roads. and your 880/237 connector through milpitas no delays to report there for this friday. elsewhere heading through oakland, northbound 880, you are seeing some delays because they are moving the cones to the right shoulder and wrapping up that roadwork we mentioned earlier. so that should clear up within the next five minutes. a little sluggish out the door through that portion but again it will be clear in the next few minutes. so that's south 880 and north 880 between embarcadero and 29th avenue. later on today there's going to be roadwork on the bay bridge, as well. the lower deck between the skyway and treasure island. that's from 7 a.m. to 1:45. right now the bay bridge is

quite the. 18 minutes from the carquinez bridge to the maze. no delays once you hit the pay gates and clear across the upper deck into san francisco. the rest of our bay area bridges checking in problem free. altamont pass a little yellow but that's typical. hopefully not too bad on this friday and let's take a look at our live cam through pleasanton. this is westbound traffic headed towards the dublin interchange. a few extra cars on the roads but overall fairly light. remember kcbs once you do hit the roads. they're our radio partners. and you can find them at 740-am and 106.9-fm. that's traffic. back to you. >> thank you. 4:54 now. some popular brands of birth control will now come with new warning labels. an advisory panel to the fda- approved the warnings yesterday at a hearing. it focused on a new generation of pills such as yasmin and yaz produced by bayer. studies show they may put women at higher risk for blood clots. >> the pill can change how thick the blood is and can increase the chance of clotting. that's all pills.

specifically, this drosperonone or yaz or yaz-like pills increase the risk more. >> current warning labels don't help women and doctors understand the risk and benefits of the pills. bayer's sponsored studies haven't found any increased blood clot risk with yaz and yasmin. test,ing while driving is illegal -- texting while driving is on the rise even though it's still illegal in 35 states. almost 1% of drivers are fiddling with hand-held drivers in a recent study. that 1% is up from .6 in 2009. separately a phone survey finds 18% of drivers admit texting on the roads. we are getting our look at how the next king of england will say merry christmas. prince charles is holding his granddaughter. it was taken during the royal wedding of prince p.m. and catherine the duchess of
