get a . welcome back. 7:10 now. only about half of all foster kids end up finishing high school, and just 1% get a college degree. our student rising above today is defying those students. here's how he's doing it. >> reporter: joe williams didn't really like dogs before, but now some of his best friends are dogs. it's just one of the things he learned living with his former foster parents, randy and kathleen.
7:11 am
>> better english. >> reporter: it pays off at reardon high, where he attends on scholarship. he has a b-plus average. but school hasn't always been a priority for joe. he was too small to remember when he was first put in foster care. his mom had a drug problem. >> i remember opening the door once and there were just police everywhere. and there was my mom being dragged away. >> reporter: joe and his sister were placed with relatives for eight years, then back with their mom in the projects. she had two more children by them. >> she was by herself and dealing coke. it was incredibly hard. she slowly drifted back into drug usage. >> reporter: that left joe in charge. >> he would get them all off, get them fed, get them on the bus. >> this is my job, i love you, but i can't do this. >> reporter: so one day, joe just left and started walking, a

7:13 am
though i was in that one room, i think i had four different homes. >> reporter: it's estimated foster children lose five months of schooling every time they have to move. about half of all foster kids drop out to . to stay in the same school, joe is on buses and bart about 3 hours today, but he's on track to go to college. >> he's resillient, tough. it's sort of the paradox of being tough and sweet at the same time. >> come on. >> reporter: joe will be the first in his family to go to college. cbs 5. . >> good for him. back to our weather forecast this morning on this holiday weekend it, is chilly out there, but it's really holiday-like. elizabeth is in with our weather forecast today. >> cold outside! cold and clear. fog will not be an issue, but it's actually the winds that have died down, keeping us cold.
7:14 am
we actually have a freeze warning in effect across much of the bay area, mostly in inland valleys. here is a live look outside. once again, the freeze warning is in effect for east, south and north bay valleys. temperatures mostly in the mid-20s to low 30s. you know what this means. protect your people, your plants, your pets. if you are heading outside this morning, i think we have weather, some weather graphics to show you. there we go. you can see the big swash of red. that is where your weather warnings are in effect right now. temperatures outside, mostly in the 20s and the 30s. notice a few smattering areas of 40s. 42 right now in san francisco, 40 in pacifica. 27 is one of our colder spots in santa rosa. fairfield, concord, livermore coming in in the upper 20s. later on this afternoon, different story. we're warming things up quite a bit. then the temperatures bump up towards mostly the upper 50s, low 60s. by the way, it is another spare the air today. if you're thinking of burning a fireplace it, is christmas eve. we know a lot of folks are
7:15 am
interested in that. you can't. it is our ninth spare the air day of the winter season. taking a look at our satellite and radar, high pressure remains in effect. at least we are dry. if you've got any travel plans heading to a relative's house for the christmas holiday, the roads look pretty good right now. of course it is still cold. the freeze warning is in effect till about 9:00 this morning. by this afternoon, plenty of sunshine to go around and temperatures mostly in the 50s and 60s. 62 in redding, 60 in sacramento, and 47 degrees if you're trying to do a little skiing out in lake tahoe. forecast closer to home, mostly in the upper 50s, low 60s. your warm spot, santa rosa at 52, 59 in oakland, 56 at vallejo. looks slightly colder today than we saw yesterday. not by much. these are seasonable temperatures for this time of year. so saturday and sunday, for your holiday weekend, looking pretty good. plenty of sunshine, staying dry. and then a few clouds roll in on monday and tuesday. and then by tuesday night, into wednesday and thursday, that's when we're seeing, yes, a chance
7:16 am
of rain. now, we're not expecting this to be a huge rain-maker, but we could see a few light showers and there is a possibility of more clouds as well on friday. that is weather. back to you. >> thank you, elizabeth. it is 7:16. plenty of gifts, food and family on tap for the holidays. and some families bond over movies and games. for more on holiday media traditions, jim steyer with common sense media, and his daughter harley. thanks for being here, you guys. harley, you're 14 years old. >> yes. >> you guys have been watching christmas movies for, well, 14 years! what are some of your favorites? >> let's see, some of my favorites personally include "elf," so funny. >> the will ferrell movie? >> yes. the grinch who stole christmas, and charlie brown christmas. what about rudolph? that got criticism this year because of the fact that it was portraying bullying and things like this, and not accepting
7:17 am
people being different. >> well, i think that's a little over the top to me, when you go there with the rudolph movie. but having said it, i think the message there basically is that, you know, all media has messages in and it sometimes people don't take it that way. sometimes cartoons, if you're a parent with little kids, one of the famous things is bambi obviously dies in the movie. >> it is sad. >> that's scary for kids, so that as apparent, i think you have to remember, when you choose family movies, you have to remember who your kid is. we always had to think about carlie and her two brothers and sisters, about what they want. so family time at holidays can involve media, if chosen well. why is it a good idea to be watching movies together? >> i absolutely think it can be integrated into the holiday festivities, and just bring family together, an activity we can all do together, assuming the movie is appropriate. and i think it's a great way to, you know, like i said, an activity that everyone can come together and do. >> it's not a substitute for
7:18 am
going out and playing football outside. we try to do all of it. i actually think the holidays, everybody knows the holidays can be watching the grinch stole christmas. >> that's what we're looking at right now! >> you can do the grinch stole christmas, or watch charlie brown christmas, or a football game! there's a good game on today. something like the grinch, is this something where you have younger children, you need to explain the message, or you let it speak for itself? >> in this case, the dr. seuss stuff, when you look at that or peanuts and charles schultz and what they created, some of these are really thoughtful. i think some of the other movies, it really depends, or games or apps. media is everywhere, and in all formats. so i think it depends. if it's the grinch stole christmas or charlie brown's christmas, like we're seeing on the screen, you know, that stuff is pretty much timeless classics, and you can get it not just on the tv set, you can get it on your ipad or you can watch it on your computer.
7:19 am
this is a big theme of christmas. that said, you don't want your kid watching movies or video games all christmas long. you want to spend a lot of time together. and i think the other theme that we feel strongly about, this is the time to do stuff as a family together that helps other people. for example, we work at glide. today we're going to go from here over to glib memorial church in san francisco, and we're going to serve prime rib dinner to people for 3 hours. that's a pretty important part. >> yeah, i think it's important to have an element of not only receiving, but also giving. and everyone, everyone can give in some way, back to their community. >> certainly. thanks for doing that, guys. >> everybody should go out there today. i would say that to everybody. you know, ann, i hope everybody has a great christmas. we hope everybody has a wonderful holiday season. and remember, no matter where you are, giving to other people will probably give you the greatest gift that you can have. i would tell you what we do, we're going to do it today,
7:20 am
certainly one of the great highlights of our family. and i hope that's true for everyone out there. >> merry christmas. >> yeah, merry christmas! >> happy holidays to everybody. >> we appreciate you being here. now 7:20. the warriors sexual harassment abuse, speaking out for the first time. and sports is coming up next. but first, a look at our favorite holiday light photo of the day from pacifica. larger than life snow globe and frosty the snowman showing off his motorcycle. thank you so much for sharing those on our facebook page. we'll be right back. california should be proud.
