all over the place. >> i went to bed at 2:30. it is all good. >> and we have weather. >> lawrence gets to sleep in. i guess all of this week. he will be in the later shows, tonight and through friday. so let's show you what is going on outside. if you are about to step outside, if you do have to work very early this morning, these are the temperatures outside right now. we're officially not under a freeze warning this morning. and you can see the temperatures are pretty chilly and some spots slightly below freezing. napa, fairfield, santa rosa, in the mid to upper 20s. and there are also a few low clouds out there. that's the biggest difference between today and the last couple of days. we will tell you how much warmer we will get by this afternoon. in the meantime, here is tiana with a look at the roadways. >> an accident to start the morning off, northbound 880, right at high street. it is blocking the right lane. you can see the traffic is very light this morning. and so not causing too much of a problem. we will check the bay bridge coming up.

>> four cars out there. >> they are returning their vehicles. >> right. getting ready to go. >> thanks guys. which leads us to the top story this morning. it is 4:32. the christmas shopping is all over. now the stores are getting ready for the after-christmas crowds. bringing those gifts back. we have more where shopping will start in less than a half an hour from now and joins us with more. gil, good morning. >> reporter: hi, frank. good morning, first of all, you're back, frank. happy post holidays to everyone out there. we're outside the kohl's because kohl's is one of the first retail chains to open this morning after christmas at 5:00 and we will show you a list. in just a moment. of all of the major retail operations hours and in fact all of the major retail stores in the country are expected to open today. so hopefully retailers are hoping it is going to be another big day of shopping. and in fact, we could see as much as 60% more shoppers on this day after christmas. compared to the same time last

year. and that's probably because christmas fell on a sunday this year. and so many people have the day off today, and many of them have those gift cards in hand. $28billion worth of holiday gift cards are circulating, somewhere in the country. and retail experts warn you, don't expect to see fire sale prices that you saw during the recession. but there will be a lot of big name discounts out there. and there will be a lot of merchandise. but just to let you know, a lot of the retailers have been clearing out their holiday merchandise, and since after thanksgiving. so here is a list of some of the major stores open this morning. at the very top, where we are, kohl's opened at 5:00. and walmart also opened at 5:00. and jc penny opens at 6:00. toys r us at 6:00. and old navy at 6:00 as well. macy's at 7:00. target at 7:00. and with best buy is going to

be opening the latest this morning at 8:00. back to you, frank and grace. >> can't wait to spend the gift cards. >> all right, gil, and happy shopping, to, you too. >> thank you. the shoppers say busy but this is a day off for stock markets in the u.s. and europe. since christmas fell on a sunday this year. overseas, trading has been light today. japan's nikeii index gained 1%. the markets in the philippines and inda were up slightly but a down day for the bench marks in south korea korea and thailand. and the economy is still worried, number one, for most americans. 57% of people polled say the economy is the most important issue facing the country now and 51% say unemployment is the country's biggest economic problem. 4:34 now. a 22-month-old san jose boy has only minor injuries after his mother allegedly dropped him out of a second story window. it happened yesterday morning at an apartment complex on

alden way on the city's west side. the mercury news says lupeda cortez's family called 911 after she locked herself in a room with her son nathan. now when police got to the room, they discovered cortez had dropped the toddler, and then jumped out of the window herself. nathan cortez plunged 20 feet on to a small patch of dirt, rushed to the valley medical center, where he was treated for bruises and some other minor injuries. >> this is a relatively quiet neighborhood. you know, a couple of blocks from santana row. a nice neighborhood. last thing you do is expect to wake up on christmas morning, and see the streets blocked off with 13 cops. >> police believe lupeda cortez has a mental illness. she has broken illness and could face child endangerment charges as well. a christmas day memorial was held for an oakland man. a murder victim who gave the gift of life. 23-year-old charles butler was shot and killed thursday. at 46 an west streets.

and police are still not revealing a motive for that murder but he was an organ donor and his liver was given to daniel murphy, a patient at a san francisco hospital. >> we're really grateful. we lost a son ourselves in 1991. so i know the grief of this family. and we're just very thankful. >> we know him being a denor, a part of him is just running around everywhere and i would very much like really soon to meet the recipients, all of them so i can see charles again. >> the rest of butler's organs went to other patients. at the time of his death, charles butler was about to start his first assignment as a merchant marine. on to other bay area headlines, 243 people have been arrested in santa clara county alone. and for driving under the influence. and the arrests were all part of a dui crackdown over a nine- day effort that ended saturday night. and there were fewer arrests this year than last and no fatal crashes caused by drunk drivers. san francisco police officers and firefighters have been

playing san sta for some needy children. and a christmas eve toy drive at lefty odo ox ls collected thousands of toys and then yesterday, officers and firefighters delivered them to children who might not otherwise have received christmas gifts. and more than 2,000 children in the city are believed to be needy or homeless. more than 5,000 people were served a christmas meal. this is at glide memorial church in san francisco, it was a tradition. and volunteers served breakfast and dinner yesterday. and keeping up a long-standing community tradition as i mentioned, the church in the tenor loin district has served more than 75,000 meals in the past three months and despite a decline in those donations, amazing. >> it is 4:37 now. and a little weather and traffic. we almost got to 60 wednesday in new hampshire. which is normal here. but not so much there. >> it was actually colder here, many days. than it was in new england. >> it has been freezing lately. >> it has been really cold. froze warnings. >> my sister in martinez says

it is 26 and you got 45. what is up with that? >> and sisms over the weekend. depending where you were on -- and 60s over the weekend. depending where were you in the bay area. pretty chilly outside but not as cold as the past couple of days. no freeze warning out there. but you will notice in the inland valleys, some temperatures at or slightly below freezing and napa at 26 degrees right now, and 27 in fairfield and so obviously some of our warmer spots are oklahoma, coming in at 40 -- oakland coming in at 40. and 46 in san francisco. the high pressure is moving slightly to the south. a cool mild day for now. we have a low just to the west of us. that is going to bring some rain showers. by closer towards the middle of the week. we will talk about that in just a minute. in the meantime, the temperatures for later on thisve a, pretty seasonable for this time of the year. a little cooler than yesterday. and you will notice the temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 50s. and 58 in livermore. 56 is the anticipated high in vallejo. once again, looking out at the next several days, partly cloudy skies, and monday and tuesday, and check out the forecast for wednesday, our

first chance of rain, in a while. and the latest forecast models put this rain, mostly in the north bay, and we're looking at light rain showers, wednesday, and looks dry on thursday and then more rain showers in our forecast for friday. an then it looks okay again. or at least dry for the weekend. saturday and sunday. we will have more weather coming up. in the meantime, a check of the quiet roadways. >> it is very quiet this morning. in fact we have one accident to look out for, northbound 101, or actually 880, and the nimitz freeway, a wreck over to the right shoulder at high street. and chp blocked the right lane and we expect the vehicle to go through four sand barrels and maybe some slight barrels as you pass the accident. they're waiting on caltrans to clear out the roadway. and a live look at the coliseum. traffic seems to be pretty light this morning. and no major problems outside that accident and out of the bay bridge toll plaza, a call of lonely cars out there and you clear all the way into san francisco. and we will see the golden gate bridge coming up. right now, back to you.

4:43. on to texas. police are trying to learn why seven people were shot to death. four women and three men were found dead in an apartment near fort worth. police think that they are all related. they also believe the killer is among the dead. the shooting apparently happened when the victims were cleaning up wrapping paper after they opened their christmas gifts. and fire investigators in connecticut have not yet entered the waterfront home where five members of one

family were killed in a house fire on christmas morning. a fashion industry advertising executive three daughters and visiting parents were killed. and the owner and another man managed to escape that fire. and the owner's husband was out of town when the fire started. 4:44 now. nearly 40 people are dead after several christmas day terror attacks in nigeria. as duarte geraldino reports, most of the victims died when a bomb exploded right outside a catholic church. >> reporter: charred and smoldering vehicles filled the street outside a roman catholic church in nigeria where a bomb exploded on christmas day. the explosion targeted worshipers who had just celebrated christmas mass. a radical muslim sect claimed responsibility for a series of coordinated attacks on the country. and terrorist bombs, churches and the government security building and this attack near the nation's capital were the deadliest. almost throw dozen killed. more than 50 injured. >> you can see so many

families, gone. households, the whole household, gone. >> nigeria authorities carried some of the dead away in body bags. officials in the country acknowledge they had difficulty at first getting help to the victims. the white house issued a statement calling the attacks senseless and tragic. and also says u.s. officials have contacted nigerian authorities to offer assistance in catching the killers. the extremists were boko haram, claimed responsibility for the bombing they want islamic law implemented across the country. local christian residents expressed their outrage. the death toll could have been even higher. authorities caught at least one man who they say was armed with a bomb that never went off. duarte geraldino for cbs news, washington. more deadly violence in baghdad, a suicide bomber detonated a car bomb at a checkpoint leading to the interior ministry. seven people including five police officers were killed.

biggest santa claus all made of sand. 35 feet long. and intentionally acclaimed sand artist actually internationally acclaimed, there we go, he is a sand artist from eastern india and got help from a team of 15 sculptors who used 1800 tons of sand over three 12-hour days and the lead artist says he hopes to send a message of peace and prosperity around the world. >> looks pretty cool. >> it puts my moat to shame. christmas observance valleyed around the country. >> -- varied around the country. >> including celebrations from beach goers in hawaii and florida and church attendance by president obama and his family. and occupy protesters in new york also marked the day. >> "occupy wall street" was one of the biggest stories of the year. and protesters in new york's zuccotti park did not take a break. >> christmas a lot of ways

defines a lot of the problems. it is a very isolating time for people especially this year where people have had homes foreclosed. and lost their jobs. >> protesters held a prayer vigil and emphasized the meaning of christmas. >> i think beyond just all of the money, and all of the good toys, and everything, and remember that we're people, and that we need to think about each other, first. >> many americans celebrated the holy day in church. including president obama and the first family, who attended services at a marine corps base chapel while on vacation in hawaii. with no snow, but plenty of surf, in the aloha state this santa arrived by canoe to a beach full of excited children. the christmas spirit was alive and well, among the beach-goers in hawaii. and among motorists in palm beach gardens florida who lined up with an hour or more on christmas eve, to get a look at over the top neighborhood lights. i'm craig black reporting. nice to spend christmas in hawaii.

>> i was surprised how many people were at the airport on christmas night. we thought it would be quiet but boston logan airport was packed and san francisco was packed and people taking the red eye to go back. >> and people like elizabeth working every single day, every single shift. she didn't have time to be at the airport. >> you too. >> i think if you can get good deals on christmas day, if you travel? >> we came back early. >> if you're headed out the door, catching a flight in an airport early this morning, pretty chilly temperatures to get out the door and start off with, at least along the coast and cooler temperatures an even some low clouds and fog out there. and otherwise, partly cloudy skies. inland, you will notice the temperatures pretty chilly. at or below freezing in some spots. warming things up. high pressure romaines fully intact later this afternoon. and partly cloudy, cool along the coast and hazy sunshine. bay and inland. with temperatures mostly pretty seasonable. climbing to the mid to upper 50s. and once again, high pressure is moving us, slightly farther south here in the coming days but today, tomorrow, we're still looking dry. and pretty mild for now. and now, we do have this upper

level low, it is going to bring a few rain showers, by the middle of this week, so we will tell you where in the seven-day forecast. in the meantime, showing you temperatures in your pin point forecast, for later on today, maybe slightly cooler today than yesterday. temperatures mostly in the 50s across the bay area. and 59 is your high there mountain view. and 55 in redwood city. cooler in pacifica. 52 is the lie out there. and closer to the east bay. concord numbers, 56. and 55 in antioch. and 57 your high in danville. so again, mostly in the mid to upper 50s wherever you're going and 55 in richmond and 54 is your expected high in san rafael. and for today, for tomorrow, partly cloudy, and remaining dry, once again, the high pressure is not budging. and then check out wednesday. and now these rain showers, light showers, so no big deal here, so no big rainmaker and it looks like we're keep can the rain showers mostly north of the golden gate bridge for now. and basically in the north bay, and it looks like wednesday, and then another chance of rain

on friday. clearing saturday and sunday. and that is a check of weather. for your forecast. or for your traffic, here is tiana. >> elizabeth, thank you very much. i will show you a live look right now, conditions through downtown san jose. or along 101 rather near tremble. so far, traffic is very light. not a lot of cars in the roadways. so good time to hit the roads if you're leaving for the holidays. and trying to catch some wherefore the rest of the week or maybe new years, and an early start. not bad. and stepping over to the maps right now, very quiet northbound 280, and no delays to report through there, and if you're headed to 80, 237, a couple of cars on that connector road, but looks like it is quiet there, and also, that is the scene of the morning, and hopefully it stays that way. and chp still clearing an accident northbound 880 at high street and it is out of lanes, that's the good news. and there is some activity to the right shoulder and there were some sand barrels taken out by the vehicle, involved in this accident, so caltrans may be on the scene and we are seeing lots of green and no real factor, as you work your way through that area and you can see just one lonely crash

there on 880, so far, so good, in both directions, and coming off the east shore freeway, lots of green here as you work your way west and eastbound and once you hit the bay bridge toll plaza, traffic looks good and no delays along the pay gates and clear across the upper deck into san francisco. no problems on the lower deck. no road work right now scheduled for caltrans. so things should be cruising right along for most of the freeways. and our sensors are updated along the golden gate bridge right now. and there is no delays, even though you see some weather and traffic looking really nice out of marin county. and the lane changes, you can see the trucks out there, so that may be indicating some slightly slower speeds and move out of the way and the traffic looks good out of marin county all the way across the golden gate bridge and into san francisco. and mass transit right on time and bart, ace, muni, cal tran, no delays and clear through the east bay, and 80, 580, 80 and 24, no delays. jump in your car and check with your radio partners kcbs. that's traffic. back to you. 4:54. the group of computer hackers

known as anonymous is claiming responsibility for a rash of high-tech robin hood thefts. the group says it stole thousands of credit card numbers and other personal information from clients of the securities think tank stratford. and some say they are missing money. one says $700 was taken from his account. and given to various charities. including the american red cross. >> they're actually just costing us all time and money, and ruining lives. >> can you hear me? >> this is my holiday. not my christmas spirit and not my family. but it is costing everybody involved. >> one hacker says the goal was to pillfer funds from people's expects and give it away as christmas donations and warn there could be nor attacks this week. the thought that counts, right? that's why millions of americans will be headed back to stores this week to return gifts that missed the mark during the holidays. karen cappa has some tips for

happy returns. >> the gifts we received during the holidays are not always a perfect fit. or perfect match. if you plan to return items you will want to have a receipt. >> without a receipt, or a gift receipt, you're going to get back either a merchandise credit or you're going to be reimbursed the lowest amount the item sold for. not necessarily what you paid for it. >> and the stickers labels and tags intact. some stores will charge a restocking fee. and in the case of some electronics, a repackaging fee. if they take an open item back at all. >> you want to be sure not to open the packaging if you're not sure you want it. because forget it. you can leave all of the tags and all of the labors on the item, but if you destroy the packaging, or rip it apart, again you have a much more difficult time returning it. >> most retailers will list the returns of the return policy on your receipt. and if that still doesn't make it clear, ask someone in the store when you check out.
