looking live at tokyo, japan, new year's eve. meantime, we want to get to our top story. the latest shooting attack in oakland left a little boy dead. officers are searching for a suspect and a motor any of that violent crime. he was at his father's taco truck last night on the 5400 block of international boulevard, when shots were fired. police say the shots apparently came from a car. when officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the child suffering from a life-threatening wound to his stomach. he later died at children's hospital. the boy was the only person hit in that shooting. police say they are seeking a specific suspect acting on descriptions from witnesses. >> we are actively looking for an african american male in his thirties as a suspect. the only information we have at this time is he wearing a goatee, and accompanying an african american female. >> the police department's major crimes unit is working the case.

they have been canvassing the neighborhood for any potential leads. this is the fourth child shot in oakland this year. in august, 3-year-old carlos nava was fatally shot in the neck about a mile from where last night's shooting happened. in december, 1-year-old hiram lawrence died after being shot in the head. this afternoon, there will be a memorial for recent murder victims at st. columbia catholic church. it starts at 3:00 p.m. students busted for drugs on a ski trip to utah have all returned home to the bay area. the teens were found with a massive collection of drugs and alcohol, but not a single arrest was made. robert lyles now has what some are calling selective police enforcement. >> reporter: at the high school, the annual ski trip to salt lake city is as anticipated as senior prom. >> yes, got a lot of friends on the trip. >> reporter: why is anticipation for the trip so high? because it's their opportunity to get high. >> lot of people bring like

illegal materials on there. >> oh, yeah, definitely a lot of partying. >> some kids do it. you can't not notice it. >> not the drugs so much as like drinking. >> reporter: in fact, it's hard to ignore the mass collection of marijuana, hallucinogens and alcohol con if i stated by police, collected from five buses filled with some of the bay area's most privileged high schools. police kept the drugs, but did not cite any of the teens involved. selective police enforcement? yes, wrote one principal, asking if this had been a group of more inner city youth or youth from a different ethnic background or socioeconomic status, if the results or consequences would have been different. >> probably coke and a lot of weed and maybe ecstasy. >> reporter: this student didn't want to be identified because she says illegal drugs are sold on campus and on the annual ski trip. in fact, police admit a similar drug bust happened last year,

with the same trip organizer. >> i think people knew before. like, i know my parents did. >> that's more than just constructive notice. that's actual notice. so that people knew or should have known that there were problems associated with the trip in as much as the students that were involved had drugs or were engaged in illegal activities. >> reporter: this former student who did not want to be identified says the ski organizers uses students to recruit on campus. >> so it's not like this is done in secret, the school administration knows? >> if the buses are dropping them off at the school and picking them up at school, i feel like the administration has to know about it. >> reporter: robert lyles, cbs 5. a major arson investigation is under way in the los angeles area, where someone torched more than 20 vehicles in less than five hours. fire crews found at least eight cars burning early this morning in north hollywood.

well, investigators want to know if they are connected to these blazes set early yesterday morning. officials announced a $35,000 reward for information in the case. republican candidates for president are heading to iowa for caucus on tuesday. it's a close race, with polls showing almost half of voters still undecided. as danielle nottingham shows us, the competitors are trying their hardest to make final impressions. >> reporter: a surging rick santorum drew a crush of cameras at this restaurant in ames, iowa. >> i'm a little surprised at the scale out here today. i apologize to everybody here! >> reporter: the candidate is chasing newt gingrich. >> there will be no need for on the job training. >> reporter: but ron paul is right on romney's heels.

not much of a comparison. but when we tell you there's entirely on a . well, put the movie star wars up against a youtube video, not much of a comparison. well, when we tell you there's a feature film shot entirely on a cell phone, don't jump to any conclusions. our alan martin takes a closer look at how movie making is changing faster than you can say smartphone. . >> reporter: the movie is called "olive," about a little girl who never speaks a word, but

nevertheless changes people's lives. >> we use our filters for the exteriors. >> reporter: but olive the movie is about to change the industry. >> many analysts say that in two or three years from now, every cell phone's going to be able to shoot a film. people that look at this project and say, wow, nice gimmick, they are not understanding what we're trying to do. >> reporter: the maker got the idea for shooting the movie on a cell phone just two years ago, but making it happen wasn't that easy. >> then it would focus selectively -- >> reporter: first, they had to hack into the nokia n 8 phone to disable the auto focus feature, then attach the phone to a lens, which came down to the low tech solution of using double-sided tape. to get an aerial shot, they mounted the phone to a remote-controlled helicopter. >> an amazing codirector, pat gillis, and he built that 35-millimeter lens. he used double-stick tape, attached it to the cell phone.

he's the one that figured out the rack focusing. i mean, the guy's brilliant. so, yeah, we were able to accomplish those things. >> 5000, wow! >> reporter: in full disclosure, hooman works for cbs radio, can be heard on the alice morning radio show. while that forum has given him some publicity, it also doesn't hurt to have a former facebook exec finance the film. >> it is a very powerful statement to make, that you can make this classically beautiful movie with something that you can hold in the palm of your hand. there is this democracyizing effect, and that's what i find attractive about the film as a whole. >> reporter: and a zuckerberg has a part in the movie. >> i saw the script, learned about the custom camera they put together. i've always been interested in entertainment technology projects that intersect in a way that challenges the norm, so that's what hooked me in. >> reporter: randy is facebook

we can go to our next view here. you can see oakland coming in at 45. livermore, 44. san francisco right now at 47 degrees. there we go. one of our cooler spots right now, santa rosa coming in at 33. for more on your new year's eve forecast and what to expect for next year, here's lawrence with your pinpoint forecast. we're off to a great end to the new year, lots of sunshine coming our way after patchy fog early on this morning. but it's looking like it's going to end up being a great day. the cold front that moved through yesterday left enough moisture behind to bring us the fog. we'll see high pressure moving in, helping to clear out a lot of low cloud and fog around the bay area. i think heading through the day, looking like a pretty nice afternoon outside. with that in mind, temperatures will warm up nicely today, maybe mid-60s in the warmer spots inland. 60s inside the bay, couple of passing clouds. towards the coast, upper 50s and looks like dry weather continuing right into 2012. the air quality will suffer just a little bit today. still looking good in the

central bay and also the south central bay, as well as the east bay. as the high pressure ridge starts to build and the pollutants get trapped down below, so probably more of a problem, especially toward the middle of this next week. still, if you do plan on traveling around the state, we'll find dry weather. so not a bad time to travel. you want to leave a little bit later on in the morning. fog will be a problem this morning, so looks like temperatures by afternoon, things become broken somewhat. 660s into the central valley. 50s in the highcountry. 52 in eureka. 64 in the monterrey bay, plenty of sunshine there toward the afternoon. high pressure now building in nicely, making for a dry weekend. looks like the weather's going to be great, at least for the next couple of days. then you see the next system out there. doesn't look like it will bring us any rain. this will run over the top of the ridge, leaving us with just a couple of clouds from that system on monday. then looks like temperatures really warm up towards tuesday and wednesday of next week. rolling the clock forward toward midnight tonight, not bad, although we'll see a couple of patches of dense fog outside.

watch out for that. late night revelers, you might see that developing in the north bay valleys. otherwise, clouds heading our way toward monday. temperature wise, not bad around the bay area today. plan on lots of those numbers moving well into the 60s by this afternoon, high of 63 degrees in san jose, about 64 in santa rosa, about 60 degrees in san francisco. next couple of days, going to keep you nice and dry. couple more clouds on monday. tuesday and wednesday really look to warm things up and a slight chance of a few more showers returning to the bay area heading toward thursday. here we go. tonight, happy new year! partly cloudy skies, temperatures in the 30s in some of the valleys. 40s and 50s around the bay. by the way, don't forget the big game this weekend, the raiders playing the chargers for the playoffs. mostly sunny skies and 60 degrees. that's a look at the weather. back to you. >> got to make sure he gets his raiders forecast in. thanks, lawrence. make 'em and break 'em seems to be the theme for many new year's revelers who made promises for the new year, only to stumble weeks later.

. today's tip of the day is about bing cherries coming in. it's the growing season, and the bing cherries have been around for a few weeks, but now the prices are coming down and quality is going up. you have to select them right, otherwise they won't taste good, and they are fairly expensive. let's talk selection. when you buy them, make sure they are dark all the way around. the darker, the better. stems have to be attached, nice and green. most of the time, they are sold in bags like this. that's okay, but look through the bag, all the way around. no moisture, no leakage whatsoever. that means cherries are decaying

she saw online. and this is what she got. >> the beds didn't even have covers on them. they had like a piece of flowered sheet. >> reporter: her photos show ripped up carpet, exposed electrical switches, loaded up outlets, and from her 12th story room? >> you could open the window and reach right out. no safety barriers, no safety screens, bars, nothing at all. >> reporter: when a cbs camera went inside, it revealed damaged baseboards, ripped-up wallpaper and an unhappy customer on the 15th floor. >> oh, my god! no screen at all! this is the most dangerous thing i've ever seen in my life! >> all too often, you look online, research around, and then you actually arrive at the hotel you chose and twawrnt exactly what you imagined. >> reporter: oyster.com created something called the photo fakeout. his team has traveled to 1500 hotels, snapping pictures of what you really get. this los angeles hotel shows its pool under the southern california sky. in reality, the view is eclipsed by a department store on one of the busiest streets in l.a. this washington, dc hotel's

it is also new year's eve. i'm elizabeth wenger. anne mackovic is off today. gunfire has killed a 5-year-old boy in oakland. officers are searching for a suspect and a motive in the violent crime. he was shot last night while standing at his father's taco truck. it happened on the 5400 block of international boulevard. police say shots were fired at about 8:30, apparently from a car. when officers arrived on the scene, they discovered the child suffering from a life-threatening wound to his stomach. he was taken to children's hospital in grave condition and was declared dead about an hour later. the boy was the only person hit in the shooting. police say they are seeking a specific suspect, acting on descriptions from witnesses. >> we are actively looking for an african american male in his thirties as the suspect. the only information we have at this time is he was wearing a goatee and in company with an

new state laws. sharon chen on how some of the biggest changes could effect your kids. >> reporter: starting new year's day, california children will have to ride in booster seats at least until they are 8 years old or 4' 9. the old 6-year-old and 60-pound requirement, gone. this berkeley mother likes the new law. >> my daughter is 6 1/2 and still sits in a five-point harness in our car, doesn't even use a booster. lot of her friends her age have the tiny half boosters without the back support. she's huge, supertall, she's not embarrassed, still sits in it because she feels safe. >> reporter: the penalty, a minimum $475 fine for the first offense this. grandmother says the new law is too much. >> i think they should go with the weight of the child. you know, you have some 8-year-olds that are pretty heavy and pretty tall. some of them are 5' 2, you got tall kids. >> reporter: another law impacting teens starts sunday. people under 18 won't be able to buy most cough medicines unless

they have a prescription because teens are getting high on one of the ingredients. state farm sees caught selling the medicine to minors face a $250 fine. this 11-year-old and his mom say the law makes sense. >> i think it's a good idea, because it's going to be bad for, like, other kids like they might take too much of the medicine, so they might get sick themselves. >> reporter: but marjon harper of oakland says the new laws punish kids like her 16-year-old. >> i do feel like that is a lot of trouble for parents to have to go through. now they have to get a prescription, take their kids to the doctor, adding to the cost of the doctor visit, getting the prescription, paying for that, then having to go and get it filled. >> reporter: another new state law pulls beer with caffeine from store shelves. >> i think they should be able to get access to liquor. >> well, they are not supposed to be drinking. so why remove the beer for the people who can legally drink? >> reporter: legislators say

they passed that law because some teens and adults who did drink caffeinated beer ended up in the hospital. in the east bay, sharon chen, cbs 5. and other new laws for 2012, public schools will be required to teach about the contributions of lesbians, bisexuals and transgender americans. pg&e will have to add -- human trafficking from their supply chains. students busted for drugs on a ski trip to utah have all returned home to the bay area. the teens were found with a massive collection of illegal drugs and alcohol in elco, nevada, but not a single arrest was made. police admit a similar drug bust happened last year with the same trip organizer. police kept the stash of drugs, but chose not to cite anyone. students we spoke with say sex, drugs and drinking are nothing new on these trips. >> oh, yeah, definitely a lot of

partying. >> some kids do it. you can't not notice it. >> not the drugs so much as more just like some drinking. >> and it's not clear yet if any of the students will face disciplinary action from the schools. one bay area educator question whether this is a case of selective police enforcement. in a letter, she asks the elco police department if this had been a group of more inner city youth or youth from a different ethnic background, if the consequences would have been different. a reward for the safe return of a squirrel monkey to the san francisco zoo is now $5000, following a private donation. the monkey named banana sam was stolen yesterday. he looks a lot like his friend, taylor. that's taylor there. banana sam is 17 years old, which is elderly for his species. someone grabbed him after cutting two holes in a mesh enclosure. >> there's a level of concern that however this animal was taken was probably forceful, and, you know, it's heart

wrenching. it's like losing a member of our family and we just want him back. >> well, banana sam is about a foot tall, weighs only 2 pounds. he requires a special diet to survive. he also has sharp teeth and he will bite if provoked. keeping a primate as a pet is against the law in california. a high percentage of voters in iowa still have not made up their minds on who to support for the republican nomination for president. the iowa caucus happen on tuesday. a poll released this week shows 43% have not made a final decision. mitt romney and ron paul are leading while rick santorum is surging. social conservatives say they are having trouble deciding which criteria to use. >> i'm torn between trying to go for that strategic candidate that's going to be able to beat obama, or to go with the person that i truly would most align with politically. >> and voters say the debates have put all the candidates' strengths and weaknesses on full display. iowans are trying to be extra careful to pick the right person

to go up against president obama. well, today, the president touched on signs of economic recovery in his new year's address. >> i'm hopeful because of what we saw right before christmas, when members of congress came together to prevent a tax hike for 160 million americans, saving a typical family about $40 in every paycheck. they also made sure americans looking for work won't see their unemployment insurance cut off. and i expect congress to finish the job by extending these provisions through the end of 2012. >> and president obama went on to say calling a 2011 a year of great challenge and progress, he also noted the end of the iraq war and the death of osama bin laden. of course this new year's eve, it is time for the biggest party of the year and all the pieces are falling into place n new york city, crews hoisted up the 6-ton ball that will drop at the stroke of midnight. drew levenson with more on the big party in the big apple. >> 3, 2, 1! happy new year! ball in times square was raised into place for a practice run friday. the 12-foot wide, 6-ton center piece of the celebration was hoisted 130 feet above number one times square. it's 32,000 lights and 2600 crystal triangles were tested ahead of saturday night's big show. and what's a party without balloons? they are blowing up 25,000 of them here, one at a time. >> we went all day yesterday, about 10 hours, and we've been here all morning, blowing them up. >> reporter: the marriott marquee hotel staff is working overtime, making 10,000 pastries, all part of the preparations for a gala, just a stone's throw from the crowd outside. >> new year's eve is probably the day after new year's eve. >> reporter: now just about everything is ready for saturday night. the only thing missing? the more than 1 million people who will fill up times square for what will certainly be the biggest celebration of the year.

holiday weekend were met with some ort . welcome back. those who packed up and headed to the sierra for the big holiday weekend were met with something that's been in pretty short supply this season. snow. but we still have a long way to

go. skiers have been hitting the beaches and casinos instead of the slopes. as we see, if more snow doesn't fall soon, jobs could be at risk. . >> i think it's great! about time the season started! >> reporter: a surprise snowstorm lifted the spirits of holiday skiers. >> we might not have gotten it for christmas as a present, but we're certainly getting it to celebrate the new year's weekend. >> reporter: sugar bowl has been making snow up until today, but most runs remain closed, leaving employees without work. >> we don't have all of our terrain open, so with that comes the subsequent impact on staffing. >> reporter: it's so slow, a nonprofit feeding the hungry is now reaching out to seasonal ski resort employees for the first time. >> everybody's got low, low income right now and everybody's kind of hungry and low on food, so they have come out. they are a private organization, and they have come out to feed everybody. and it's much appreciated. >> reporter: tahoe hotels and restaurants are also eager for the snow to start falling, as the new year rolls in. the holiday weekend seems a bit slower for some, but alternative

activities keep customers coming in. >> lot of people participating in the snow parks and just kind of coming out and enjoying the mountains. >> reporter: you can even swap your skiis for golf clubs. this weekend, the old brockway course is still open because of the unseasonal weather, but most travelers we talked to say they were counting on some snow to make their new year's holiday complete. >> we're going to come up and we were just hoping that the snow would show up, and it did show up. >> brought a snowboard, with the snow or without the snow. we'll find the patches, make a little run. >> reporter: reporting in tahoe, cbs 5. 's take a live lo . and looks like we are looking at another snow-free and rain-free holiday weekend. let's take a live look outside. you can actually see the transamerica building right now. we do have some areas of patchy fog, but obviously not as much fog this morning. as we saw yesterday, clear skies. you should hopefully be able to see those fireworks later on tonight. temperatures right now, mostly in the 40s, a few 30s in our

inland valleys. san francisco at 47. 44 out in livermore. for more on your new year's eve forecast and what to expect, here's lawrence with your pinpoint forecast. . we're off to a great end to the new year. lots of sunshine coming our way after patchy fog early on this morning. but it's looking like it's going to end up being a great day. that cold front that moved through yesterday left enough moisture behind to bring us the fog. we'll see offshore winds blowing a little bit, clearing out a lot of low cloud and fog around the bay area. i think heading through the day, looking like a pretty nice afternoon outside. with that in mind, temperatures warm up nicely. today, maybe mid-60s in the warmest spots inland, 60s inside the bay. toward the coast, upper 50s. looks like dry weather continuing right into 2012. well, the air quality will suffer just a little bit today. still looking good in the central bay and also the south central bay, as well as the east bay. as the high pressure ridge starts to build, pollutants get trapped down below, so probably

more of a problem, especially toward the middle of this next week. still, if you do plan on traveling around the state, we'll find dry weather. so not a bad time to travel. but you want to leave a little later on in the morning. fog will be a problem this morning, so looks like temperatures by afternoon, things become broken somewhat. lot of 60s in the central valley, 50s in the highcountry, 52 in eureka. 64 degrees in the monterrey bay. plenty of sunshine there as we look toward the afternoon. so high pressure now building in nicely, making for a dry weekend. looks like the weather's going to be great, at least for the next couple of days. then you see the next system out there. doesn't look like it will bring us any rain. this will run right over top of that ridge, leaving us with just a couple of clouds from that system on monday. then temperatures really warm up towards tuesday and wednesday of next week. rolling the clock forward toward midnight tonight, not bad, although we'll see a couple of patches of dense fog outside. watch out for that. late night revelers may see some of that developing in the north bay valleys. otherwise, low clouds head our
