6:31 pm
. good evening. i'm ann notarangelo. the search is on for the suspect who shot and killed a 5-year-old boy in oakland. he was with his family in east oakland last night when shots were fired. elizabeth wenger reports this is the third child killed in the city in just four months. . >> reporter: another tragedy in oakland. another innocent child killed. >> ever since i heard he was dead -- >> reporter: family friends of the young shooting victim gathered at 55th and international where it happened. they lit candles, prayed, and shed tears over a life cut short. >> he played with my baby. i know him since he was little. i know his family. they are good people. >> reporter: 5-year-old gabrielle martinez, jr. was standing near his family's taco truck shortly after 8:30 last night when shots rang out. he was the only one hit. friends say the gunman was waiting for his food order when he pulled out the weapon. police don't have a motive.
6:32 pm
>> supposed to stop. he's a baby! too much. >> reporter: by many accounts, the martinez family is well-liked in the community and called hard-working. >> they are working and i tell them all the time, be careful, be careful, because right here, a lot of stuff. >> reporter: gabrielle is the third child shot and killed in oakland since august. over the summer, 3-year-old carlos nava was fatally shot less than a mile from last night's shooting. and last month, another toddler, hiram lawrence, was in the line of gunfire and later died after being struck in the head, just weeks shy of his second birthday. members of this community can't believe another family has to bury their child. >> i could have been eating at the taco truck when this happened and my daughter could have been shot. people should just stop the violence. >> reporter: elizabeth wenger, cbs 5. >> police are still looking for a suspect. according to the mercury news, police describe him as a black man in his twenties with short
6:33 pm
hair, glasses, and a goatee. he was accompanied by a black female, also in her twenties. they got away in a light-colored four-door sedan. victims like 5-year-old gabrielle were remembered today in oakland. family, friends and church leaders gathered at a memorial and placed crosses at the st. columbia catholic church. 110 people were killed in oakland this year. >> it's become a symbol of something that's going on in our city, something very wrong. >> we as the city have to ask ourselves, what are we doing or what are we not doing that will make this different next year? >> this is the eighth year the memorial has been held. well, tonight, a san jose woman is behind bars following a bizarre machete attack that left another woman dead. police were called to a home on johnston avenue last night. inside, they found two women who had apparently been attacked. one woman died from her injuries. the second was treated at a hospital and released. the police found a machete-like
6:34 pm
weapon at the scene. at first they thought it was a home invasion, but investigators now believe the second woman, 40-year-old segal siddique was the attacker, however they don't know the relationship of the two or the motive. a high speed car chase through san francisco left behind a trail of collateral damage. it started around 2:00 this afternoon when someone called police to report a kidnapping and stolen laptop in soma. about half an hour later, officers spotted the suspect car in the tender loin and began chasing them. they ended up on highway 101, then into the bayview district. along the way, the suspect's car struck a bystander in a wheelchair, almost hit an officer, and collided with another car, injuring two people. police finally caught up with the two suspects in engleside and took them into custody. well, it is already 2012 in some parts of the world, but here in the bay area, party goers are just getting started with the celebrations. don knapp is live on san francisco's embarcadero, where one of the biggest parties takes
6:35 pm
place tonight. don? >> reporter: it's a free party. 2011 is fading fast, and so are the options for lining up what you'll do. lot of folks already have their plans, but we found the options range from pricey to just about free. let's begin at the high end. n]♪ >> reporter: the san francisco symphony's new year's eve masquerade ball is billed as the most elegant and glamorous chance to ring in the new year. this afternoon, the orchestra was being rehearsed by conductor michael francis with violinist nicollette benefit debtee. the program begins at 8:00 with drinks, concert at 9:00, and at 10:30, folks can dance on stage. >> everything the symphony does is for everybody, actually it's our centennial season this year and we were founded 100 years ago as an orchestra for the entire community. this is one of those events where everybody comes out to celebrate the new year in style. it's one of the more elegant events. >> reporter: tickets are still
6:36 pm
available and will be at the door until about 8:00 this evening. prices range from $115 to $195 apiece. there are lots of other events around the bay of course, big events at hotels and little events in communities. even a party on the retired aircraft carrier uss hornet at the former alameda air station. >> how will you celebrate the night tonight? >> we just got here. we'll see. we're going ice skating right now with the kids, and then after that, i don't know. we're going to see. >> whatever comes along, huh? >> whatever comes along. we are happy to be here, yes. >> reporter: at midnight, the cheapest party happens right here. 200,000 people expected for the fireworks show, and of course it's free. >> excited children. don knapp in san francisco, thank you. if you are going out tonight, you can get a free ride on some public transportation. muni, caltrain and santa clara vta all waiving their fares. trips on bart will thought be free, but there will be extra service tonight and trains will
6:37 pm
run until 3:00 a.m. well, fight to the finish in iowa. . >> we felt all along that we could give a big, strong message that the people of iowa would respond. what a new poll reveals about whose campaign is surging and what the candidates will have to do to seal the deal. looks like good weather for fireworks across the bay, as we see high clouds drifting into the area. we'll hold off on the low cloud cover till early in the morning. will we see cooler temperatures prevail, becoming dry and mild through the rest of the week? i'll have your forecast, coming up next.
6:38 pm
6:39 pm
most of the republican . we are just three days away from the iowa caucus. most of the republican presidential hopefuls spent today making a last-minute blitz through the state, trying to win over those critical undecided voters. danielle nottingham is in des moines, with more on the fight to the finish. >> reporter: and the new poll out tonight says 41% of people likely to caucus on tuesday are still undecided, leaving the candidates with a lot of work to
6:40 pm
do in the next few days. [ applause ] >> reporter: it's the final stretch before tuesday's caucus in iowa, and the new des moines register poll confirms rick santorum's surge. >> we felt all along that we gave a big, strong message and bold plan to get this country turned around, that the people of iowa would respond. >> reporter: this holiday weekend, time is running out for the gop hopefuls to win over undecided voters. >> we're trying to ask for your vote. >> reporter: that means working the phones. >> love to have your help. >> reporter: and crisscrossing iowa. >> we actually need a positive solutions-oriented campaign. >> reporter: in sioux city, frontrunner mitt romney continued to ignore his gop rival. >> the battle for the soul of america's going to begin on tuesday evening. >> reporter: the des moines register poll released saturday night shows mitt romney in the lead, followed by ron paul, and rick santorum. but just looking at the survey for the last two days, santorum
6:41 pm
catapults to second place. this couple drove an hour to indianola to meet rick santorum to help make up their mind. >> i'm looking for somebody that can express the republican ideas and convince the independents to come over. >> reporter: the polls are leaning towards santorum. >> we are getting out, meeting the candidates to see what kind of confidence we have in them. >> reporter: they haven't made their final decision either and say they likely won't until they caucus tuesday night. and santorum released a new ad today, touting himself as the only true social conservative among the bunch. >> danielle, let me ask you. some occupiers were out on the campaign today, wanting to be noticed by the candidates. were they effective? >> reporter: they were effective in terms of getting some media attention today. there were a lot of cameras out there, about a few dozen protesters with the "occupy"
6:42 pm
movement disrupted activity at newt gingrich, rick santorum and michele bachmann headquarters in the des moines area. they all have offices in the same complex. police arrested 18 people, two were juveniles. but again, the "occupy" protesters said in the beginning when this race started this week that they would be here, they would be very visible, and they wanted to disrupt. and they did that for a little while today. >> danielle nottingham, thank you so much. our cbs 5 political analyst, joe tuman joins us now. mitt romney, santorum, ron paul making some moves. what's the significance of that? >> well, the significance of that is it shows that rick santorum, the time he's put in the state is beginning to pay some dividends. it also suggests that in iowa, just like with the national polls, there's still reluctance about endorsing or giving this race to mitt romney.
6:43 pm
rick santorum is the latest person to have benefited from that. so three days. >> yeah. what's the game plan? if you're a candidate and you want to seal the deal, there's so many undecideds out there, what have you got to do? >> you've got to reach out to them. there's also people whose minds you could change who may have committed, perhaps shifting alliances. this is -- a caucus date is a place where face time is very important. having a candidate come in and showing them he or she, the people in the state are worth spending time with is exactly the sort of thing that makes people feel good about that candidate. and if he or she can align with their values and suggest they are not just able to beat barack obama, but different, you know, perhaps they will change their minds. the quick answer to your question, you've got to put in the face time right now. for a long time, people have been saying, you know, the problem with the republicans right now is it's anybody but romney, right? but romney wasn't even in iowa for part of the day today. does that show he's pretty
6:44 pm
confident? >> well, the poll we just looked at gave him a 9% lead over rick santorum, a smaller lead over ron paul, still 5 points with, a 4% plus or minus ratio. my guess, and the answer to your question, mr. romney's internal polls, polls his group is paying for probably have him at a comfortable lead in iowa, enough he could go back and spend some time in new hampshire and come back to iowa. the truth for romney, he needs both of the states to begin to push some others out of the race. his biggest test is in the south, where people will view his religion as one of the reasons to discount him in the selection. getting these early wins will help him to make a stronger case there. >> joe, thank you for your insight. appreciate it. >> thank you. a live look outside to one of the biggest new year's eve parties. >> yeah, a mild night out there tonight, with just high clouds drifting across the bay. low fog should not form until early in the morning in the north bay valley. so we'll look for mild and dry through the night, great night for fireworks here. we'll take a look at what you can expect into the next year,
6:45 pm
coming up in just a few minutes.
6:46 pm
6:47 pm
. they are getting ready! there's a live look at one of the biggest new year's eve parties in the world. a million people are expected to watch the ball drop in new york city's times square tonight. the place has been packed for hours. temperatures, warm for new york, in the 40s. i was just asking jim what the temperatures would be like here in the bay area and they are actually comparable.
6:48 pm
>> very close. looks like both coasts will enjoy a dry and mild new year's eve here, as we see temperatures locally in the upper 40s to low 50s right now and they will only drop a few degrees between now and midnight. we see mostly clear skies, a few high clouds drifting across the bay. again, shouldn't interfere with the fireworks. partly cloudy and continued cool through the night here, a little patchy fog forming in the north bay valleys. again, dry and mild through sunday and into the beginning of the week. looks like the new year will start much like the old year ended, on a dry note here, as this near-record level dry spell continues across california. high pressure settling in again. a spare the air alert is up for the bay area tomorrow. moderate air quality at best with a little worse than that up in the north bay here for tomorrow. probably into the beginning of the week as well, as we continue with this bit of an offshore breeze due to that stagnant high pressure system. temperatures, a little cool underneath mostly clear skies into the mid to upper 30s in the
6:49 pm
north bay valleys, and right across the tri valley area, as we'll see mid to low 40s at the bay, with a little patchy fog forming in the early morning hours. lot of clouds out there, but not much in the way of moisture, as it remains well to our north. far northern california did pick up rain here this week, but most of that has missed us and will continue to do so through the week. we see this high pressure system building across the west, sending the storm track well to our north. we'll pick up clouds on wednesday into thursday, but i would expect it to be mostly dry with cool nights and warm days for the foreseeable future here, at least through the week, as temperatures tomorrow will once again be in the mid to low 60s. a mild day across the bay. we'll look for that trend to continue into the beginning of the week. a slight cooldown here, as we see the slight threat of showers appear on the horizon come thursday, mainly in the north bay, if any at all. and even that is very brief at this point. i don't think it will amount to
