[ laughter ] >> about to fly out of this joint for a little vaca. we have our photographer hard at work already this morning at 4:30 standing by live at 101 and trimble in san jose. so obviously traffic conditions are light. we have some roadwork out there. we'll tell you more about that coming up. in the meantime, dry on our commute to work. >> very dry. cold, too. we have some freezing temperatures again. 30 in napa, 30 in santa rosa and 28 degrees in fairfield. couple of clouds want to move in along the coastline. we'll talk about that plus some big changes in the long-range forecast. >> are you still talking about that? >> it's the only thing i have to talk about these days. >> february sometime perhaps? >> before that! >> thanks a lot, you guys. 4:31. the university of california is on its way to banning smoking or chewing tobacco on campus. the rules announced by uc president mark yudof will be phased in over the next two years. the bay area news group reports that no one will be allowed to smoke on a uc campus by 2014.

the ban will be across all 10 campuses but each will decide how to implement the ban. a fee highly high school teacher is jailed accused of having sex with a boy under 15. police say this woman, 40-year- old marie johnson, has had several encounters with the boy between december of 2010 and may of 2011. johnson teaches at granada high school in livermore. police say the relationship was initially formed through text messaging and facebook. >> i was not too surprised. these things do happen. at the same time, as a parent with three boys, i'm always in constant communication. >> what i see truly is a tragedy. there are a lot of people's lives who are affected by the allegations that have been made today. >> authorities do not believe that there are other boys

involved but they recommend parents talk to their kids about the contact with miss johnson. this morning the marines are investigating a video that the defense department describes as "disgusting." the marines say they cannot verify the authenticity of the online video or its source. and we blurred out much of the 39-second video but it appears to show american marines in combat gear urinating on the corpses of taliban fighters and then joking about it. >> it depicts us in the worst possible light so it's going to be a real challenge for the administration to handle this swiftly, properly and within the constraints of the military judicial system. >> a muslim civil rights group in washington condemned the video as did the nato-led security force in afghanistan. it says the marines are apparently no longer serving in that country. months of brutal unrest is forcing the u.s. to scale back its presence in syria. the feds have pulled embassy

staff out. a number of employees have been ordered to leave as soon as possible for security reasons. the u.n. says at least 5,000 people have died since the violence erupted 10 months ago. mostly protestors killed by forces loyal to the dictator. on to north korea now. kim jong-il's body will permanently displayed at a memorial palace where his father has been since 1994. north korea will put up a statue of kim jong-il in his honor. he died last month of a heart attack. it's now nine days until south carolina republicans cast their ballots in the next presidential primary. mitt romney is coming off big winds in iowa and new hampshire. the latest augusta "chronicle" poll shows romney with a narrow lead over newt gingrich in south carolina. and as eye necessary >> reporter: mitt romney is

trying to tap into voter frustration to win south carolina. >> it's been a tough three years, unemployment at 9.9% still. >> reporter: at a rally he repeatedly blamed president obama for the nation's economic troubles. >> we're going through tough times in part because of the failure of one man, that's why he's got to go. >> there is one conservative in the race who has the potential to defeat governor romney. >> reporter: for weeks newt gingrich has been trying to stop romney's momentum attack his business background. but on wednesday, a gingrich supporter pleaded with him to change his strategy. >> i want to beg you to redirect and go after his obvious disingenuousness about his conservatism and lay off the corporatist versus the free market. >> i agree with you. obama just makes it impossible to talk rationally in that area because he is so deeply into class warfare. >> reporter: even other gop contenders are calling on gingrich to switch gears and focus on romney's record as

massachusetts governor instead. >> i'm not going to engage in hypercharged political rhetoric. that's not who i am. >> reporter: rick santorum didn't mention gingrich by name but called for an end to the hostile rhetoric. >> it's bad enough for barack obama to blame folks and business for causing problems in this country. it's one other thing for republicans to join in on that. >> reporter: santorum and the other gop candidates are going after romney's weak spot in south carolina pushing for the social conservative vote. ines ferre cbs news, washington. >> ron paul and rick perry are also campaigning in south carolina. the winner of that republican primary has become the nominee in every presidential election since 1980. newark is the place to go today if you are looking for a job. target is holding a job fair today through saturday at its store at newpark mall in newark. company plans to hire 200 people for its new store in fremont. that store will open up in march. job fair will run from 8 a.m.

until 3 p.m. for the next three days. and hundreds of new jobs are expected later this year just outside the bay area. it's known as project x right now. there is a huge warehouse that's expected to be built in patterson off interstate 5 in the san joaquin valley. there is a 120-acre site that's expected to close escrow town and groundbreaking is soon for thousands of workers. it could open by the end of september. there is speculation that it might be amazon. >> i have heard that. i have heard distribution of other kinds, a call center. we're going to wait and see what that is, if it's amazon or any other company. we welcome them and look forward to building a relationship with them. >> last year amazon agreed to create 10,000 jobs in california in exchange for a delay in taxing online purchases. out the door with a little

traffic. >> hey, elizabeth. >> quiet on the roads this morning. nice start to the morning commute. if you head off to work this early like the rest of us, we know how you feel. light traffic, live camera of the bay bridge toll plaza. there is some lower deck roadwork so you will find various lanes blocked towards oakland eastbound 80 near the toll plaza from the cantilever towards the toll plaza. otherwise the san mateo bridge 14-minute drive time in either direction no issues across the span out of hayward towards the peninsula. south bay quiet, no headlights in sight on northbound 280 towards cupertino and out of downtown. same thing on the nimitz. obviously, busier across this stretch of freeway. 880 near the coliseum. coming up a check of mass transit. lawrence, let's get a check of the forecast. >> that weather yesterday afternoon beautiful around the bay area. looks like we're going to do it again in most spots plenty of sunshine coming our way but starting out with chilly

mornings early on. out there now mostly clear skies patchy fog moving in along the coastline, 34 degrees right now in concord, 42 in oakland, 35 livermore, 30 santa rosa. high pressure overhead remains in place. that means we are going to keep nice dry conditions across the bay area a next couple of days. next week we'll have changes. 66 in san jose today, 56 in oakland. 63 in san francisco. next few days okay, changes sunday, more clouds over the weekend, temperatures taking a dive into sunday, cool on monday. then clouds gather and we may talk about some rain as we head into the latter part of next week. that's a look at weather, guys. back to you. >> let's talk about it. >> i want to! crab fishing on sunday. the season was delayed because of the crab were not mature enough to harvest. the central california fishery hasn't been as productive as last year, which was 19 million pounds. san francisco officials including the mayor and the police chief are starting to prepare people for the lunar new year celebration. they will have a news conference at noon to raise awareness about public safety as the year of the dragon arrives. volunteers will pass out information to merchants and shoppers in chinatown. the son of murdered san francisco mayor moscone is directing a play in honor of his late father. he was 14 when his father george was shot to death by a san francisco supervisor in 1978. "ghost light" is based on his experience of losing his fare. as a boy moscone had a premonition about his father which haunted him throughout his life. >> i think every child feels they are responsible on some level for anything bad that

happens to their parents. >> it runs through february 19. it's playing at the berkeley repertory theater. facebook is turning to the best programmers in the world. the first round of the contest starts next friday january 20th. the social network came up with a timeline profile from one of its hack-a-thon events. the winner gets $5,000 plus a tour of facebook headquarters and a chance to chat with company engineers. there is a strong showing for bay area students competing for the next generation of innovators. intel selected 29 students as semifinalists for this year's science talent search. they represent 14 bay area schools. more than 1800 students submitted projects in a number of disciplines from

stepping in, after the outgoing governor pardoned 199 peop welcome back. it is 4:47 on this thursday. mississippi courts are stepping in after the outgoing governor pardoned 199 people including 14 convicted murderers. it was one of haley borobudur's last acts in office and now a

judge forbids the release of any more pardoned prisoners. a california teen was hiding under a bed during a burglary. police in west covina say the 15-year-old called 911 yesterday. at one point the intruder was in the same room as the boy. police got to the house and arrested the suspects. the teen was not hurt. that was a panel of glass smashing just feet away from a sacramento tv news crew. it fell eight stories from a state building yesterday. yikes. architects checked 6,000 other windows on the building and didn't find any cracks. they did recommend, however, more testing and repairs. back in 2005, several panels of glass cracked and fell from the same building. engineers blame a heat wave for damaging the panels and causing them to fall. a heat wave in january? >> that will wake you up.

i remember i was doing a live shot on a freeway and a big truck one of those 18-wheelers went by and two of his tires popped. now how the rubber flies off? went right by my live shot. i was like what the heck was that? that was scary. >> close encounter, frank. >> indeed. the head of washington, d.c.'s transit system is defending his bus drivers after reports show metro bus has a high rate of accident-related injuries. a report and video, several accidents through a public information request. some buses ran red lines the lights, other cases not the fault of the bus drivers. >> we carry 542,000 passengers on a given weekday. we have a challenge with pedestrians, double parking, events that are taking place, construction. >> the study says metro bus ratio of injuries per mile traveled is much higher than many other transit system. for example, metrobus had more injuries last year than the

l.a. transit system even though l.a.'s metro had twice the number of miles traveled. they need a little work there. this morning the ntsb is trying to figure out how two planes came within 300 feet of colliding in chicago. last month at midway a southwest flight that just landed was cleared it cross a parallel runway. that's when the co-pilot of that boeing 737 noticed a small learjet taking off in front of them. the larger plane stopped just in time but the pilot's frustration was evident: the n-t-s-b has not yet assigned any blame for the . >> good thing the brakes worked. the ntsb has not yet assigned blame for the incident. and look out above. a russian probe is heading for earth. scientists say that the 14.5- ton device will crash sunday

somewhere in the indian ocean. the probe was on a mission to collect soil samples from a moon on mars and return them to earth. but one of the main engines failed and got stuck orbiting earth. >> hm. [ laughter ] let's take a live look outside. we can city that headlights are moving just -- we can see that headlights are moving just fine this morning on our "timesaver traffic" camera. let's get a drive time. we'll hit the maps and it's 14 minutes from the altamont pass to the dublin interchange. so not much slowing out there this morning. of course it's not quite 5:00. that may be the reason why. our chp reports that we continually check throughout the morning are quiet, as well.

so no major incidents. if you want to use mass transit, we continually check this all morning as well and everything is continuing to move on time for bart, ace, muni and caltrain and your ferries. so no delays anywhere. there are areas of overnight roadwork. a lot of it is clearing now or already picked up but this is one stretch in danville this ongoing roadwork various on- and off-ramps could be blocked for another hour until 6:00. so areas like the diablo road off-ramp scheduled for construction until 6:00. bay bridge no delay towards the pay gates and you're cruising across the upper deck heading into san francisco. lower deck a different story. various lanes blocked on eastbound 80 until 6:00 this morning. but in your drive along the peninsula, 101, 280 not much going on. live look at more headlights on

the road out of downtown san jose towards cupertino. that is your "timesaver traffic." for an update on your forecast, here's lawrence. >> thank you. spring-like weather around the bay area. today another nice day outside. it's chilly to begin with in parts of the north bay, 30s and 40s around the bay area. patchy fog at the coast. a weak offshore flow continuing and that's going to keep your skies mostly clear inside the bay, plenty of sunshine, mid- 60s there this afternoon upper 60s in the valleys. at the coast, may see a couple of patches of fog otherwise temperatures in the 50s and low 60s. ridge of high pressure in place will do so for the next couple of days but eventually this will break down and the whole pattern is about to shift and it looks like that means we could eventually end with wet weather next week. dry the next couple of days, mild temperatures. enjoy it, though, as it looks like it will end soon. temperatures around the state:

>> 66 in san jose. 65 in san mateo. 63 sunny union city. patchy fog at the coast. about 60 in pacifica. 62 in brentwood. 66 in livermore and 64 and sunny in the napa valley. inside the bay north bay temperatures up to 67 in santa rosa and 64 degrees in novato. the next couple of days looking great temperatures near 70 in the afternoon, warmer spots. then into the weekend and temperatures start to cool off. doesn't look like we'll see rain over the weekend but more clouds much cooler sunday and then next week clouds pour in late in the week maybe some showers in the bay area. by the way holiday weekend this weekend can't believe it that's right looking sunny and cool as we head into the martin luther king holiday but i think late next week is when we start to see the pattern shift and then that open it up. we can see a series of storms heading to the bay area. lots of snow in the sierra nevada. we'll see if it opens up.

comic books on mark zuckerberg and lady gaga, as well. president obama hosting some celebs at the white house. brad pitt, angelina jolie, spoke with him about jolie's humanitarian work. she is the united nations good will ambassador. the hollywood couple was in d.c. to screen her movie, in the land of blood and money. she wrote and directed the movie about the bosnian war crimes. >> amazing how they can shoot video through the white house like that and see who is in there. >> cool. >> hey, tickets are on sale right now for the new batman movie that's coming out. >> "the dark knight" rises already sold out. a lot of anticipation. entertainment weekly reports fans can still buy tickets for san francisco and in los angeles. the tickets are sold through online retailer fandango. the company says it is unusual for tickets to go on sale this far in advance.
