door. guess we got a little bit of rain. >> we have some showers moving in our direction and looks like it's not going to be a huge storm but this will get things going. any rainfall is fantastic and that's what we are going to expect to see. we are going to time the storm out for you in a few minutes. first elizabeth has traffic. >> we could get rain for the evening commute. >> that's right. >> so consider mass transit today. for now, we are staying nice and dry. here's a look at our time saver traffic bay bridge camera. there is some roadwork in hercules. we'll tell you where else you could see slowing coming up. the search is on for a month who opened fire on an officer's -- for a man who opened fire on an officer's car around 9:30 last night. they tried to follow the acura car when the driver made a u- turn. the suspect drove past the police sergeant's car, fired several shots at the car.

no injuries reported. the officer chased the vehicle on the nimitz southbound. they say the suspect hit speeds of 100 miles per hour. the man was last seen by police on the eastbound lane of interstate 580 by highway 13. the san francisco sheriff will face the judge this afternoon for arraignment. anne makovec is in san francisco where the sheriff and his wife are not helping with the investigation into domestic violence allegations. good morning. reporter: they are going to have to talk today at least mirkarimi to enter a plea. he is expected to enter a not guilty plea at his arraignment here at the hall of justice at 2:30 this afternoon. mirkarimi's attorney could ask the judge to lift the protective order which requires him to stay away from his wife, child and home. the attorney could also request a gag order to stop leaks to

the media and ask for a speedy trial as the judge sets the date for a pretrial hearing. mirkarimi, sworn in as sheriff earlier this month is charged with domestic violence battery, child endangerment and dissuading a witness stemming from a fight on december 31 when the sheriff allegedly grabbed and bruised his wife's arm and threatened to take away their son. she denies any abuse, which domestic violence experts say is common in these type of cases. >> her reasons for this are sometimes would you say the battered women's syndrome of i'm accepting of this, this has happened but he's a good father and husband, we're going to work on this marriage, we're going to make this relationship work. so a lot of times it's the minimalization of things. it's like it's not that big. >> reporter: court documents show neighbor ivory madison reported the alleged abuse after videotaping mirkarimi's

wife, eliana lopez. she did an interview on venezuela radio yesterday questioning whether her neighbor madison may have an axe to grind politically. so far, mirkarimi and his wife have refused to speak to investigators. >> thank you. a suspect in a machete murder may plead not guilty. she is accused of killing her domestic partner's mother weeks ago. she was the suspect and she was arrested. two women attacked with a hammer and knife during a home invasion in san francisco last week, good news, they are now improving. police say the 76-year-old and 56-year-old victims have been upgraded from critical to stable condition. the attacker is still on the loose. divers have resumed the search for the 21 missing people on the cruise ship off the italian coast. take a live look off the coast

of italy here. the captain is facing more scrutiny than ever. he was at the health:of the cruise ship when it ran a-- he was at the helm of the cruise ship when it ran aground friday night. he said he tripped and fell into a lifeboat, why he left ship. victims' family members say he must be held accountable. >> he has done what he has done. he will pay for his wrongdoings. he will pay for his wrong decisions. >> the captain is under house arrest right now. at least 11 people are confirmed dead and several are still missing. opponents. 49ers new santa clara stadium say they have the backing for a ballot measure now. the group "santa clara plays fair" wants to repeal the $850 million loan deal approved last night month. the clerk's office has not determined whether enough of the signatures presented are

valid. the city attorney has already said the loan decision is not subject to referendum because voters already approved that project. stay tuned. officials from san francisco and pg&e are confident the lights will not go out during sunday's big nfc championship game at candlestick park. since power went out twice during a game a month ago they spent close to a million dollars now to replace the 8700- foot cable that provides power to the stick and plan to have extra crews there sunday in case something goes wrong but all went well in the saints game. i imagine all will go well this weekend. we can only hope both on the field and off. this morning residents in the pacific northwest are digging out from a rare snowstorm, a foot of snow in parts of washington state yesterday closing schools making travel very treacherous. a mix of snow and rain is on tap for today. portland, oregon was also hit hard. potential flooding tomorrow when another storm is expected to hit the state.

and winter is back in the bay area with a vengeance this weekend. so is mr. lawrence karnow. nice to have you back. >> good to be back. finally we're able to talk about some rain. it looks like we'll see some of the raindrops later on today. hi-def doppler picking up on some of the moisture now mostly dry outside although you see a couple of returns showing up in parts of the north bay but it won't be until later on in the afternoon and evening hours before we start to talk about serious rain in the bay area but look at the storm system finally high pressure getting out of the way. the jet diving on the back side of the system will amplify the system and push it through this afternoon and evening. so it's going to be wet especially for the commute on the way home. temperatures right now a little chilly in spots. high clouds and that's about it moving overhead right now. 38 degrees in concord. 41 in oakland. 32 and freezing in livermore and 38 degrees in san jose. by the afternoon hours, that's when we expect things to get wet. temperatures expected to be in the 50s and 60s. but we're not done with the rain yet.

there's more on the way. we'll talk more with that moment. let's check traffic with elizabeth. >> we're pretty good on the roads so far. it is dry out there for now. so no major incidents or problems. here's a live look outside at what conditions are like across the golden gate bridge. not even seeing a car. i should probably wait a second so we can at least see one direction of traffic moving. it is so early! everything is just moving fine at the limit according to our time saver traffic cameras. a lot of our roadwork looks like it's in the clearing stages so was some roadwork in hercules. eastbound lanes of highway 4 -- interstate 80 between willow and highway 4. so that looks like it's been picked up. that's why you see the question mark there. that's traffic. back to you. >> i think that's a first not seeing a car. >> i know. i should have waited a little longer. i saw headlights in the distance. >> there's usually one early bird out there. >> thank you. governor brown calling for budget cuts, higher taxes

saying california should move forward with high-speed rail plans. those were among the main points of the governor's state of the state address in sacramento yesterday morning. brown admits the budget deficit still a big, big problem but he remains optimistic about california's future. >> if we work together we can stimulate jobs, build renewable energy, reduce pollution and greenhouse gases, launch the nation's only high-speed rail system, reach agreement on a plan to fix the delta, improve our schools, reform our pensions and make sure that prison realignment is working. >> that's a big "to do" list. also yesterday, the state attorney general's office gave the go-ahead for signature gathering to put his tax hike proposal on the november ballot to increase the sales tax by a half cent and raise income taxes on individuals who make more than $250,000 a year to try to close that gap. head of the uc system says he will consider a bold student-

backed plan to abolish tuition. no joke here, a student group called fix uc presented the idea at yesterday's regents meeting at uc-riverside. under the plan students would pay no up-front tuition at all. instead they would commit to paying back 5% of their annual salary for 20 years after they entered the workforce. fix uc claims the plan could triple the university's revenue. >> 10 years down the line the uc would start seeing more money than it currently does right now. >> uc president mark yudof praised the plan as a construct testify idea saying he already directed his number crunchers to give it a full review. interesting. it is 4:40. a cell phone company raising prices. how much data plans are going up. >> also ahead. >> mitt romney is losing steam in south carolina and another candidate is gaining ground on him. i'm terrell brown in washington. the latest on campaign 2012 coming up. >> you asked and they listened. the free perk a popular airline

for the republican presidential nomination. the republican party of iowa now calls the esults a "split back now at 4:42. a setback for mitt romney in his run for the republican presidential nomination. the republican party of iowa now calls the state's caucus results a split decision between romney and rick santorum. preliminary results from that day after the iowa caucuses showing romney had that slight 8-vote advantage. but what you see here is the new certified vote count reported in the morning des moines register. they show santorum had a 34- vote lead. both candidates lost votes after slight inaccuracies were found in 131 precincts. now the big question is whether the new iowa numbers will affect the minds of voters in south carolina with the gop primary set to go on saturday. as terrell brown reports, that could be a close race, as well.

reporter: mitt romney is fighting to hang on to his lead in south carolina. >> if i'm president i will repeal obamacare and get us back to free market principles! >> reporter: he tried to fire up voters last night before launching into an attack against newt gingrich. >> him taking credit for the jobs created in america during the reagan years is a bit like al gore saying he invented the internet. all right? >> reporter: a new poll shows romney's lead over gingrich slipping to 10 points down from 19 points two weeks ago. the two will have a chance to go head to head in tonight's gop debate the final one before saturday's primary. but gingrich is already warning voters to be on the lookout for smear ads. >> i fully expect the romney campaign to be unendingly dirty and dishonest for the next four days. they are discovering they can't buy this. >> reporter: president obama isn't waiting to kick his campaign into high gear. his team has purchased advertising time in at least six states. the first tv commercial airs today. >> secretive oil billionaires, attack president obama with ads

safe. facebook rolling out a bevy of new apps today to share your personal details with the rest of its social network. the new apps will automatically share your online activity. your friends will see when you post movie reviews to rotten tomatoes and buytickets through ticket masters. american airlines is offering a new perk, free drinks. nice. it's providing a free glass of beer or wine to passengers. it all starts next month but it's only on flights between the united states, europe, asia and some south american countries. customers asked for complimentary beer and wine and american airlines listened. 4:46. coming up a hollywood homicide takes a rather bizarre turn. police a history buff to the rescue one man's pledge to fix

body parts. cadaver dogs are expected back in the hollywood hills today to search for more body parts. a gruesome story. two feet, two hands found yesterday not far from where hikers found a human head in a plastic bag that happened on tuesday. police think the victim was killed elsewhere recently and the body then dumped in a park near the hollywood sign. washington monument will get much-needed repairs thanks to a generous history buff. this morning, the national park service will announce that a

philanthropist will donate the final $7.5 million that's needed to fix the landmark. how about that? cracks as you may recall formed atop the monument following last summer's big earthquake along the east coast. travel delays, school closures and power outages plaguing the pacific northwest during the storm the last few days but all that fresh powder has dogs wagging their tails. these dogs running around and chasing each other in olympia, washington. part of the town is buried under two feet of snow. kids are probably enjoying that. finally some rain heading here to the bay area. lawrence karnow is back in the weather saddle and joins us with the big storm that's brewing. >> hey, frank. i'd love to see the snow but probably only once a year. i think after i had to start shoveling it a few times -- >> i imagine the folks in portland and washington saying time to move on. >> no snow here folks but finally rainfall outside. beginning to see clouds moving

in no real rain yet doppler trying to pick up on moisture in the north bay but not until this afternoon and this evening will rain encroach on the bay area. so a lot of clouds not as cold this morning. still cold enough, 30s and 40s early on. by the afternoon, those clouds will be thickening up and rain moving in in the latter part of the day highs only in the 50s and 60s. but looks like could be pretty wet especially through the commute. this low on final approach toward the bay area and finally high pressure moving out just far enough to the south to allow the system to move in our direction. the rain making a return and this will open up the door to a storm over the next few days. this morning cloudy early, not much rainfall. toward the middle of the day a few showers in the northern reaches of the bay area and toward the commute time. you can see that cold front swinging through the rest of the bay area and the peninsula bringing that rainfall through 7 p.m. then it continues to sag to the south. still, it looks like not the

biggest rainmaker we have ever seen but we're picking up rain totals so we're happy with that. almost an inch of rain in wet spots but to the south bay maybe a tenth so that's about it. but we have more to come. temperatures expected to be in the 50s and low 60s. as we look toward the next couple of days a more impressive storm system tomorrow night and keeping wet into saturday morning, then drying out and then maybe for the game late in the game the chance of a few showers and toward monday maybe a couple of leftover showers and dry after that. >> so a sloppy track on sunday for the big game? >> it may be wet. maybe by the end. game. hopefully it will so down eli manning in their aerial assault. >> thank you. >> how about a little traffic on this thursday morning? >> moving right along. let's go outside and show you what's going on. it's quiet so far this morning. we have a little bit of

roadwork both directions in the san ramon valley between alcosta and sycamore valley various lanes blocked. not causing major delays. not seeing much in the way of delays all across the bay area. still good coming out of the altamont pass. there's a look at your drive time still only 13 minutes on this thursday morning so you're still good in the westbound lanes through livermore and continuing towards the dublin interchange. the south bay problem-free. 280 no problem towards highway 85. it could be a wet commute home so mass transit would be a good option. bart, ace, muni and caltrain and your ferries all on time. back to our "timesaver traffic" camera at the bay bridge toll plaza, no delay here this morning. so looks good right now heading into s you may find some lanes

mayors are going to bet come game day depending on who wins. new york, of course san francisco. if the 9ers win new york mayor michael bloomberg will rename 49th street in manhattan, 49er street. that's creative. he is also going to send a dozen new york bagels to san francisco. now, if the giants win, mayor ed lee will then have to outfit a cable car in blue and red for a day. he will also send some sourdough bread to the big apple. apple gearing up for a big announcement today. the impact it could have on education and another shake-up for the oakland mayor. who is stepping down and why? all coming up. san leandro police looking for a shooter this morning who shot at one of them and led them on a high-speed chase through the east bay. coming up, we'll tell you what led up to that shooting in the first place. and san francisco's new sheriff has his day in court this afternoon on charges of domestic violence.
