of weather because we have a little rain in the forecast. it finally came, lawrence. >> wasn't that nice? we had wind and rain. we have another round coming a little stronger outside today. hi-def doppler picking up some scattered showers right now. you can see some of that moving toward the santa cruz area as we have been having some reports of light rain toward parts of the north bay into santa rosa but just off the coastline, you notice that next batch of green is the beginning of the next system that will likely push onshore today. a lot of showers as we approach the day today and then it will be on the increase toward the afternoon. look at the clouds already beginning to stream in from that next system. that will get rain going but the main cold front likely not going to move through until later on this evening when we'll see strong gusty winds and the heaviest amounts of rainfall. the temperatures around the bay area right now fairly mild. you have 48 degrees in livermore, 53 in san jose, 54 in mountain view, 51 in san

francisco. mostly cloudy skies, scattered showers. this afternoon 50s and low 60s and that's it. the storm system rolling in barreling in bringing rainfall toward the afternoon hours so expect the rain to be picking up throughout the day. breezy at times especially at the bay and the coast. cost 20 to 30-mile-per-hour gusts or higher. then more showers into saturday for storm for sunday. we'll have more on that in a moment. elizabeth has traffic. >> it could be a wet commute home so be caringful if you are heading to work this morning. mass transit may be an option for later on in the day. wind advisories in effect including one for the san mateo bridge. you can see caltrain has their warning sign up. so it was also windy this morning. we are getting reports of it across the bay bridge even though there is no official wind advisory this morning. be careful. that's a live look at one of

our "timesaver traffic" cameras. golden gate bridge they are about to do the lane change so that's why you see some emergency vehicles out there. everything is free-flowing on north- and southbound 101 between marin and san francisco. we'll have much more traffic coming up. back to you. >> thank you. banks and courts are the targets again today as "occupy" activists plan protests all across the country and right here in the bay area, as well. anne makovec in san francisco where protestors will gather i guess about 6:00 this morning. reporter: they are gathering right here at justin herman plaza where they were camping out for a couple of months last year. we haven't seen any large-scale protests from the "occupy" movement here in the bay area really in several months. but today they say they are back "occupy wall street" west and they say their mission is to disrupt business as usual. here are some events for today. they are doing a squid fry

outside at the 555 california building. that is in reference to a rolling stone writer's reference to one of the big banks there as being a giant squid. then the "occupiers" are planning a protest at 8:00 at california and montgomery, at noon a flash mob at california and kearney and an occupy the courts event at the u.s. court of appeals. then there is a labor protests outside a big hotel chain at 4:30 and a march beginning at 5:00 here at justin herman plaza. "occupy" wall street west says that today's actions will continue to build a strategic mass movement asserting the power of the 99% for economic justice and the better world. you're looking at video now of previous "occupy" protests here in san francisco. these protestors say today will be the largest street protest in the city since antiwar demonstrations in 2003. police are going to have a close eye on today's actions. they say they are all four facilitating the right of free speech and for demonstrations

but they are going to make sure nobody breaks the law. >> thank you, anne makovec. "occupy" protestors ambushed oakland mayor jean quan in washington, d.c. for the conference of mayors winter meeting. [ yelling ] >> how's it feel! how's it feel! 99% going nowhere! >> demonstrators surrounding the taxi she was in yesterday and blocked it from leaving the meeting. quan remained in the car covering her face with a piece of paper as demonstrators yelled shame, shame, shame. they are upset with the way she handled the "occupy" movement in her city of oakland. police moved in and quan was able to leave. more than 70 mayors at the conference are starting a group in support of same-sex marriage. antonio villaraigosa of los angeles is one of the group's co-chairs. the group hopes to expand public support for same-sex marriage the mayors for freedom

to marry group will be formally launched today. a preliminary hearing is expected to end today in marin county for accused killer joseph naso. the hearing will determine if there is enough evidence to try him for the murders of four women in the 1970s and 1990s. he pled not guilty. yesterday, witnesses including naso's ex-wife judith testified. both the san francisco sheriff and his wife shed tears in court, very emotional day, as ross mirkarimi pleaded not guilty at his arraignment. but the judge refused to lift that order that says mirkarimi has to stay away from his wife eliana lopez and their young son theo until his domestic violence trial is over. mirkarimi's lawyers promised to fight that ruling. there is a hearing on it next thursday. >> mr. mirkarimi did not commit domestic violence. he did not endanger his child. and he did not try to dissuade his wife from talking to the police or anybody else.

>> i know what violence -- domestic violence is. and the real violence here is against me is to put a family apart. >> mirkarimi is due back in court on monday. that's when a trial date will be set. police out in force this sunday at the nfc championship game between the 49ers and the new york giants at candlestick park. gil diaz joins us now to tells more about the preparations for the big game. >> reporter: some of those saints fans complained that insults and curse words were thrown at people wearing gold and black. the police kicked out 54 spectators last week for bad behavior, both 9ers and saints fans. this sunday there will be more cops at candlestick park cracking down on drunk fans and disorderly conduct. police chief greg suhr says he won't need help for outside agencies because he asked all officers not to take vacation that day so he has potential about 2,000 officers available. 49ers boss sent out messages to

there's one death possibly linked to the brush fire. an unusually powerful snowstorm in the pacific northwest is expected to finally taper off today. it knocked down dozens of trees, coated power lines and trees with ice. it also left at least three people dead including a woman and her one-year-old son, who were swept away in the torrential rain after all of that snow. a new storm system later today will bring more rain but no snow or ice. flood danger will remain high up in the northwest, as well. it is 4:39 on this friday. sparks fly at the latest gop debate. the attacks one candidate called very disturbing. after suspending the search for 21 people missing since that italian cruise ship disaster because there is evidence the ship shifted again on the reef where it crashed near tuscany one week ago today. any movement by the ship could be dangerous for the rescuer divers that are inside still looking for bodies. the death toll from the crash remains at 11. the ship's captain is still under house arrest. piracy arrests in new zealand led to an attack that shut down the u.s. government websites. the justice department took some file sharing site megaupload.com in response to group "anonymous" says it took down websites of the justice department and the fbi and some others. most of those sites are back in order this morning. none of those indicted for piracy are americans. and tomorrow, well, tomorrow is the south carolina republicans will finally get to cast their ballots in the primary down there for president. last night the four surviving candidates gathered for a debate in charleston and as

been killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan. that was just confirmed by the u-s defense de this just in. six marines have been killed in a helicopter crash in afghanistan that was just confirmed by the u.s. defense department. four other troops from france were killed by afghanistan soldiers. french president nicolas sarkozy says france is suspending its training programs for afghan troops now. a dramatic rescue from a smoky fire caught on tape in central china hunan province. a 70-year-old disabled woman couldn't get out of the burning building. so two firefighters went in to get her out. they climbed to the second floor, found the woman, then one of them carried her down

the ladder to safety. a military satellite with improved surveillance capability is heading into space. >> and liftoff of the united launch alliance delta 4 rocket -- >> a delta 4 rocket blasted off from cape canaveral. it's the fourth of a series of new military satellites put in place since 2007. this particular satellite is expected to improve communication with drones in the middle east and southeast asia. and the delivery of an antique german cuckoo clock has sparked controversy with the u.s. postal service. michael of north hollywood says he was flabbergasted to see surveillance video of a postal worker tossing the package over the fence there. it goes. he had set the camera during the recent wave of arson fires in the area. he says at bankrupt landing of course damaged his cuckoo clock

and promptly called the postal service. >> when i told him i had it on video it changed -- they were here in 10 minutes. >> bet they were. the question, how could the postal worker get the package on the other side of the fence at a safe distance away so it wouldn't get stolen? the usps says carriers are instructed to return packages to the post office if they can't safely deliver them. this guy just threw it over the fence. the homeowner says he plans to find a repairman who specialized in those clocks and send the postal service the bill. it's back. we have a little snow in the sierra finally. all you skiers out there have to be happy about this. this is the site people have been hoping see all season long. many expected several inches of snow. this morning, caltrans has 200 people and 135 pieces of equipment on standby including plows and sanders waiting to get to work and chain up those cars and, you know, say hello to winter once again. we got a lot of rain coming

this weekend. let's check in with lawrence to find out -- i guess it's phase 2, right? >> this one looks stronger as a matter of fact. winter storm warnings go up again this evening as we have a stronger storm headed up in that direction so up to high country bring the chains. you will need it. still, the first storm winding down. some leftover showers in the bay area but we're already beginning to see the first part of the next storm system. see the big green batch off the coastline? that's the warm front that's now headed toward the bay area. that will get the showers going a little later on this morning and throughout the day picking up probably seeing the heaviest rain coming through later on this evening. out the door looks like we may see scattered showers outside temperatures running in the 50s and 40s. so don't be surprised if you see rain. plan for rain and breezy conditions especially into the afternoon. the winds will be on the increase late in the day too as that cold front approaches. and that rain will also be picking up. commute home will be wet. so the second low approaching, first one moving by. we have trailing showers behind

that. this system is going to pack a punch once it moves onshore maybe a couple of feet of snow across the higher mountains in the sierra nevada. more wind coming our way. probably going to see 20 and 30- mile-an-hour gusts around the bay. heavy rain later on this evening. showers on the increase this morning. middle of the day rain all around the bay area. that's not the heaviest part. the main cold front not expected to move into the bay area until 9:00 this evening. look at the yellow and orange even some of the fuscia there. that's a sign of heavy rainfall making its way through tonight. then turning to showers toward saturday morning and then we'll catch another break. rainfall totals could be impressive almost 2 inches in some of the wettest spots in the bay area up into the north bay, a lot of rain into the santa cruz mountains. so this should be a nice soaker. temperatures in the 50s and 60s but it will be soggy and that rain will be on the increase throughout the day today so be prepared. it is going to be a stormy day especially toward the afternoon. looks like the weekend won't be a washout, maybe showers

areas of flooding in marin, northbound 101 at sir francis drake boulevard. there is water on the road. this is our only flooding report so far. be extra careful on the roads. numerous spinouts. there was an earlier traffic alert overnight in the south bay that's now gone. but again, just something to be aware of especially on the on- and off-ramps that can get slick. sierra travel. grab your chains towards 88. we showed you the snow up in the sierra. no chain requirements for 88 or 50.
