far north and across the bay we saw 2 to 4 inches of rain in the wetter locations. in the mountains, 1 to 3 inches of rain across the greater bay area. that rain will be tapering off this morning, as it already is. we'll see a bit of a break this afternoon. a few scattered showers out there today, but shouldn't amount to much. the next round of rain will arrive late tomorrow. probably not at game time, but through the game. we'll see light shower activity, as this system moves into and through the area. rainfall amounts will be much less than what we saw today. we're talking quarter of an inch or less across candlestick. it won't be a washout. winds will pick up, even 20 to 30 mile-an-hour range as rainfall amounts stay generally less than half of an inch throughout the bay area through sunday night. so just enough to mess things up out at candlestick, which, of course, doesn't take much. we'll look for highs today in the mid to upper 50s throughout the region. and probably hold that through tomorrow into the beginning of the week. we'll see a bit of a bump, as temperatures warm into the 60s and skies dry out.
7:45 am
as you can see, the rain will come to an end on monday and then we'll dry things into and through next weekend. for the big game of course, we're looking for rain shower activity, with temperatures in the mid-50s. and, again, a good soggy candlestick afternoon. back to you, ann. >> thanks, jim. a new uc berkeley class explores how journalism for social change affects foster children. the director of fostering media connections daniel hinepolt joins us this morning. thank you for joining us. >> thanks for having me. you have created this class based on solutions rather than just reporting. so a new form of journalism that's kind of been around. tell us about the class. >> the whole idea is i don't think public discourse should happen unless you're focused on solutions. the course is really looking at the problems in the foster care system as kind of a test case
7:46 am
and then from there finding solutions and figuring outweighs to communicate those solutions very wisely. this is more than just reporting what's going on. this is reporting what can be done about it. >> right, right, exactly. and you feel like something that's been really lacking? >> yeah, i think generally whether academic or media discourse has been largely about the problems we face, which is great. but we need to really get beyond the problems and start working on solutions. i think that having a class where students can focus on that and figure outweighs to articulate that is going to be kind of critical for getting these major societal problems, not just foster care, but that's the first step in a much broader agenda that has to deal with children and the way we deal with them and treat them. so i think that dealing with solutions first is really what we need to be doing at journalists. this whole semester will be based on the foster care system, that's what you're looking into. why did you choose that subject? >> i chose foster care because i've been a journalist covering the system pretty intensely.
7:47 am
and i have mentored two young men. at some point, i launched this project fostering media connections with the goal of creating solution-based journalism around the foster care system to improve it. so it was my personal experience mentoring two young men down in los angeles that really got me going on this whole path. so what is the process the students will be taking? >> they are going to come to class every monday from 6:00 to 7:30. the 6:00 to 7:30 portion will have speakers from around the country. we've got some of the top thinkers on foster care issues and media and public policy. and they are going to come in and we'll have the speaker series, which is actually open to the public, too. anybody who is interested in this can contact us at fostering media connections and we'll make sure to get you involved. great. we can post the information on our website, cbssf.com. >> yes. i have to ask you about another journalism ethics question that's been in the
7:48 am
news. on thursday, newt gingrich attacked john king for asking about his marital issue when his ex-wife accused him of asking her for an open marriage. that's been talked a lot about in the newsroom and all around journalism circles. was it right for john king to ask that question right off the bat? what do you make of that? >> i thought it was hilarious. >> interesting, for sure. >> i thought that newt's response was a good one. i mean, you know me from talking to me right now and my whole bent is around solutions, so that you would waste time talking about something so trivial as this, just seems to me kind of ridiculous. i would never do that. but you know, john king wants to get ratings. so the question is, you know, in john king's defense, is that was the question that was on a lot of people's minds and the audience around the nation had been talking about that that day. should he not have a chance to address the elephant in the room right off the bat?
7:49 am
>> i mean, he should have that opportunity, but i think that journalists also have a responsibility to not only report, but lead in a sense. i mean, the idea of journalism as a force of the state that really makes government better is one that i believe is necessary for a true democracy, and the responsibility is not to be salacious, but the responsibility is to talk about the solutions and the things that will get us further along. >> interesting perspective. daniel, thank you for joining us this morning. >> thank you. some people can't get a ticket to tomorrow's big game at candlestick. we'll explain where our own liam mayclem is hosting a watch party of his own, and the king of pop honored here in the bay area. we'll have that and lots more, coming up in liam's list. ar r . and we continue the countdown to the big nfc championship at candlestick park. our viewers showing off their 49ers pride. this is kevin kennedy posting
